    Hey fellas- the 466E is a “hydraulic unit electronic injection” or “HUEI” system.
    It uses the engines oil to create the high pressure through the injectors.
    Lemmie see if I can explain- there’s a lift pump mounted to the back side of the high pressure oil pump (drivers side of engine, mounted to backside of front engine cover). When the engine cranks or runs, the lift pump pulls fuel from the tank, through the filters and into a galley in the cylinder head. Part of the electronic injectors are mounted through this galley. The pump creates approx 50psi in this galley and to the injectors. That’s your fuel supply and pressure- that’s it- easy peasy.
    Now for the more dynamic part of the system- the hydraulic aspect. The high pressure oil pump (HPOP) takes lube oil from the engine- supplied by the regular engine oil pump- and creates upwards of somewhere around 2000 psi. Now, this pressure is regulated depending on engine load, throttle percentage, etc. we would call this “injection pressure regulation”. The regulator uses a valve that is operated by basically a spool electromagnet, which receives a variable voltage from the engine computer- this variation is dependent on load, throttle percentage, etc. When the engine is cranked it wants a little less regulation to create more pressure. When it is at an idle, there is more regulation and less pressure. When there is more load on the engine or more throttle- less regulation- more pressure.
    What’s this oil pressure do anyways? Well- that oil is sent by a high pressure hose from the hpop to the side of the cylinder head, where it’s pumped into a galley in the cylinder head- separate from the fuel galley. The injector receives this pressure like the fuel, and that oil under pressure goes into a part of the injector on top of a small plunger. Underneath this plunger is the fuel- just sitting there at about 50psi. When it is time for the injector to fire, a signal from the ecm gives the solenoid on the top of the injector a shot (it’s a shot of ac voltage- about 90 volts- I might be wrong on that) and when it does, the solenoid releases that oil pressure (a lot of pressure) onto the top of the plunger, thereby shoving that little plunger down super hard (with all that oil pressure) and super fast, thereby creating a ton of pressure on the fuel, through the poppet and out the noozle of the injector into the combustion chamber.
    So- it doesn’t have an injector pump in the traditional sense.
    As you’re probably aware, the Ford 7.3 and 6.0 power strokes are of this very same design- because, well- they’re made and designed by international.
    There are a couple of smaller caterpillar engines that use this type of injection system too.
    Hope this helps with your understanding of how these things fire off.
    Also- in this case, if you don’t have any type of yellow engine light on the dash, then the ecm isn’t getting powered up. Certainly there’s a battery power distribution problem- find your main fuse box under the hood and in the cab and get to pokin around with a test light👍👍

    We used to have one of these trucks. 4900 DT466E..... rollback. We took it to get it washed and detailed. They cleaned it too good. They used a pressure washer and sprayed the brains. Didn't run after that. The best day I experienced with the truck was when it finally got fixed, some guy wrote a check and it left the premises. No more trouble at all.

  • @matthewbolyard
    @matthewbolyard 2 месяца назад +29

    Hey Hank and Wiley, they had trouble with the lift pumps on these trucks, there is a way to start it though, you need to loosen the fuel filter on the engine, and then take an air compressor and pressurize the fuel tank with the cap left on until fuel comes up to filter then tighten filter back up and it should fire right up, have a good one guys, love your content

    The 466E is an electronic controlled engine. That’s what the E stands for. This is the same system the 7.3 Powerstroke uses. The earlier 466 used a totally different injection system. The 466E uses a ICM (Injection Control Module), that controls the injectors. The injectors work under high pressure oil which is supplied by the HPOP (High Pressure Oil Pump). The injectors work hydraulically. They are basically tiny hydraulic cylinders. The injector is pressurized by the HPOP, then when the ICM triggers the injector, the high pressure oil presses against a tiny piston in the injector forcing the fuel to be injected into the cylinder. There is a crank position sensor that helps tell the ICM when to fire the injectors and is known to fail on the 7.3. There should also be a pressure sensor for the HPOP which is also a known failure issue. Also a good thing to check is oil level in the HPOP reservoir. The ICM rarely fails, at least on the 7.3. More often than not, it’s one of the sensors that fails.

    I used to maintain a fleet of those trucks. That the high pressure oil pump Wiley was calling the injector pump. They are notorious for going bad. That is most likely the issue on it. You can test it with a high pressure Guage. If memory serves me right(it's been about 10 years since I've worked on those) I think it should put out at least around 1800 psi of oil pressure. Those engines are common rail engines and the injectors use oil pressure instead of fuel pressure to fire the injectors.

    • @notajp
      @notajp 2 месяца назад +3

      Yes, they use the same system as the 7.3 Powerstroke engines. Without a functioning HPOP, you have no fuel injection. One thing to check is the oil level in the HPOP reservoir. After sitting 15 years, the oil could have drained out. If it’s the same as the 7.3, there is a HPOP oil sensor. They’ve been known to fail on the 7.3, same with the crank sensor.

    A semi-truck refers to a truck or tractor that has an engine, meaning it can run on its own. However, the trailer or tractor-trailer portion cannot. You can only use a tractor-trailer when it's connected to the truck because it doesn't have front wheels.
