      Cutting lower has its price to, dirt is in those stumps and can lead to a chain wearing or even worse breaking. That grinder does not seem to care and these two seem to be okay with the process. Great way to learn.

    • @schwags1969
      @schwags1969 3 месяца назад +2

      @@xt7190 It was a safety concern over a cost issue, maybe I should have left the wear issue out of my statement. I worked in a rental shop for years and we had a waiver for people renting chainsaws for cutting stumps, we also had a stump grinder for rent. And the teeth on those stump grinder teeth lasted a very long time, carbide is very hard. So I do know what I am talking about. Thank you for the informed comment!

    I run a stump grinding business and there are some tricks to it I learned.
    Grind the side of the stump nearest you first and go down in sweeps to the bottom in dirt, that way you are cutting with the grain of the wood, don't go directly down from the top as that is cutting across the grain and it takes way longer, your teeth wont last as long, its harder on the machine, its also the cause of the head bouncing which is due to too much of the radius of the cutting wheel in wood, this also causes the wood to get hot and harden making the job even harder for the teeth to cut and shortening their life.
    Get rid of the hood at the front it serves no purpose in open areas and stops you sweeping on the side of the stump as suggested above.
    Dont raise the boom up and expose the door to flying debris, stumps can have all sorts of things hidden in them like stones and metal that you dont want fired at the door so keep the boom low between you and the cutting head. I wear shin guards and padded pants doing it as I've been hit a few times and that's just a small machine.
    Once you have ground the side of the stump to about the 3/4 of it, move the wheel ahead of the stump so you are cutting with the back of the wheel upwards.
    If you keep going on the side to the far edge cutting with the front of the wheel once you hit the root flair on the back side you will be cutting across grain so back cutting gets you back to cutting with the grain which is much faster and easier on the machine and teeth.
    Also use a chainsaw to block the stump to near ground before grinding, it saves loads of time and tooth wear, far cheaper to sharpen chains than replace grinder teeth.

    6:20.
    Here's a thought, as you said depth perception from above, and "position" of the stump after you grind it to ground level?
    BEFORE you start, use an updown type road spray can, to mark a line through the stump, far out to either side, as well as a line from the stump, directly ahead of your machine, about 2-3M either way.
    Then when you have a lot of mulching and dirt there, you can still see where the stump was, to grind it accurately, plus a couple of stakes either side, that have a stringline between them, will give you depth perception regards how low your machine head is, in relation to that string line, especially if you make the top of the line/stakes level with the height of the machine head, when sitting on the ground.
    That way, as you mulch down onto the stump, the stringline ahead of you will provide you the nescessary "height profiles" you are after.
    Later when well knowledgable in using this, it will be a natural memory, as to how high or low, you are stump grinding anything else, without needing either the paint, or the string.

    13:00 Even a 6" round MIRROR, similar to a M/C mirror, mounted to the side of the head which allows you to see down from the top, will suffice as a "watching the teeth working" device, which (if you accidentally knock it off, will be easier, and cheaper to replace than a costly wireless camera, but which) will stay there providing downwards vision, no matter how long your working day is, as it's not only wireless, it's powerless and yet for one's eyesight - is always on. My Mom was saving for a car. she had 25 grand and just wanted to get a used 2-3 year old limited T&C Chrysler limited. We are driving in Hoffman estates and see a Chrysler sitting with a for sale sign. Literall parked under the main SEARS sign/landscaping at the entrance to their giant office complex. Weird, kinda funnt we thought why is it parked there? Call number, guy answers, says he'll be right down. Shows up in a chauffeured golf cart, NICE REAL $$$ suit. Introduces himself, Its THE fricken president of Sears NA! We talk, he shows us van, we realize, this is worth ALOT more then what mom has. Its a ultra rare diamond edition custom order he says. It was part of a promotional between Chrysler and Sears Corps. He got a built Magnum, and his wife this van.
    He says Ill cut you a deal since its 2 years old super low miles , $40 grand. Moms like ohhh, im so sorry that out of my range. He looks at mom, asks do you have a family? Mom yes, asks about her work. says just a sec. Calls his wife , they talk, hands phone to mom and after a minute, moms crying!!!!! Im like WHATS the matter mom!
    And she says, his wife decided! Their letting us have it for 24,000 dollars! So NOW we have money for the paperwork, tax and title too! WTH they knocked 16 grand off the price just because Mom was a hard working family person. P.S She kept in touch and they still exchange Christmas cards n stuff with her. When moms retired to FLA she discovered she was 2 miles from them. So now they are all in the same group chat down in FLA Port charlotte senior community.
    Over two decades later too. Life is funny you never know who you will re-meet across the country randomly years later. Pass on the kindness, I always try to.
    Another tangential long post oh well. some wisdom somewhere in there...maybe.

    Hey Hank, that looks like a great setup. I have a woodland mills Pto driven for the tractor, done over 200 stumps. Not sure what the soil is probably sand where your at. I have mostly clay and some rocks and it's hard on the teeth. Keep some spare teeth in stock, you will be able to tell when they get worn. Good job!

  • @nickeckemoff7631
    @nickeckemoff7631 5 месяцев назад +1

    I'm using same thing but on 3PT on tractor. Like guy said, you gotta not get stuck in the bowl or it bogs down...move forward or backward to knock off the edges. After getting down to the ground and everything is covered with woodchips, it becomes guesswork as to where to grind. I use the bucket or shovel to move the chips out of the way. The stump is a good 2-3 times bigger below grade with big roots going off....getting it down to grade is the easy part and then doing 6-8 inches below grade is the hard part. First 1/2 rows of teeth on the outer edge of the rotor take the most beating...mine nearly shot after like 5 huge stumps...one that was 42 inch diameter on top (4 trees going together) and like 6+ feet wide below grade took me all day (realistically like 5-6 hours). I got a backhoe and on the fence what's faster...anything 24+ inches on top probably best of grinding, but anything smaller can probably dig up similar speed (NP to dig a stump in 30 minutes). Honestly not too impressed with the grinder...it's kind of a pain to use and crude...the bolts holding teeth worn down and loose... makes me wonder if I can even replace the teeth to see if it works better.

      Yeah sub surface. This will cut 10" below ground level.

      @@hhamilton1970 I think @tcmits3699 means chainsaw the stumps to surface level, then hit it with the grinder. This saves the grinders teeth from chewing on wood that is easily removed with a swipe of the chainsaw.

      Oh yeah, definitely can do that too.

      @@themichaelcreed Thanks TMC that's exactly what I meant, that stump grinder was impressive, though

      @@hhamilton1970 No, he meant "cut them" with a chainsaw, before you grind.

    That's how a neighbor should be and I'm glad you told him not to worry about it cause GOD sees that and GOD is going to give you an unexpected blessing. I know you can't do stuff free all the time but sometimes you just have to go the extra mile for people. AMEN. GOD BLESS YOU.

    Never charge friends or neighbors money.......charge them food/meals!
    Great way to build relationships......20 minutes of stump grindin' is worth about 2-3 meals.....whenever you're makin' your favorite dish (friend) make enough for one more!!
    Learned that in college when a guy talked me into working for him for food from his deli.......I remember him putting his arm around my shoulder & asking "what are ya gonna do with the money?". I got way more food from him then I ever would have been able to buy with min. wage earnings!!
    Even got 2 new girlfriends from these helper-deals over the years.
    Never date neighbors or co-workers. thou. Different lesson......

    I have to admit that I really don’t know anything about this equipment, but I am very surprised how fine the stumps and roots are ground. This thing makes wood chips without further processing. Another thing that surprises me is the height of the stumps. Is there a reason for that? Seems like a waste to me. Just a little trivia: Baum is the German word for tree. We pronounce it kinda like „ba-oom“. Love your attitude ❤😅

    Practice makes perfect. Muscle memory should come pretty quick. And just as I was thinking, Put Calvin in the machine he jumped in. Team stump go.

    What? , no yelling, no one pissed off, no assault, no 911 calls … you’re gonna tell me it’s just neighbors showing respect, getting along, shaking hands, oh well, guess I’ll search for some sovereign citizen video showing some self entitled moron trying to piss people off just for clicks.
