    Best truck i ever had was my 74 pete cabover, cummins power, 13 speed, 4:11 rears on air. Todays trucks are junk. Thanks for the memories!!!

  • @ericmann8347
    @ericmann8347 Год назад +12

    Hank - A couple thoughts ... Pete's w/Cummins KT450s & KT525s could be equipped with either 12V or 24V starting systems. If this is a 24V system, you'll may be able to identify it (if the truck is from the late '70s or so) by a Delco Alternator with two outputs (12V and 24V). The 12V output is near the rear of the alternator body and the 24V output is close by a little farther back on a transformer/rectifier box bolted to the back of the alternator body. Generally this configuration uses 4 batteries - two series connected batteries in parallel with another set of series batteries. These will usually have two battery cables connected to the back of the starter (these are the ground wires), two battery cables to the solenoid on the starter (from the two +24V outputs) which also connects to the 24V alternator wire, and two jumper cables which also connect to the 12V alternator output (and also provide12V power to the rest of the truck).
    Depending on when the truck was built, there could be a 12V/24V series/parallel starting relay instead of the alternator described above (the relay connects batteries in series for starting and parallel for running/charging).
    Since you system seems to be functional at 12V, you may just have a 12V system - if so the two wires at the back-bottom of the starter are ground cables and I think you should find two battery cables also attached to the solenoid which is near the front of the starter on top. You probably need to have a battery connected to each pair of battery cables (solenoid/ground on starter) because you need to have parallel cables to deliver enough current for the starter.
    Hope you might find this useful. Sure do enjoy you channel!
