M1917s are also called P17s on this side of the pond. The change from rimmed 303 Brit to .30-06 resulted in the M1917 magazine being able to hold six rounds. However, the .30-06 came on five-round stripper clips.
that's very interesting that you show clear on the Rifle but then were able to immediately press the bolt back into battery. The P 14 has a magazine bolt stop so the soldiers knew when they were empty. Has yours been modified?
Excellent video, Thank You!
I have an excellent WW1 era (Still had the rear volley sight) P14 I saved from a Pawn shop with a sporter stock that I restored with original Eddystone P14 parts and the trigger is fantastic. I believe they came straight from the factory that way.
One of the best looking rifles of the period. Love the gun room. The wooden floor rounds off the authentic ambience!
Six fitting is on .30.06 The two vertical grooves on the bayonet hilt are to distingush it from a SMLE bayonet, the ring height and size are diffrent.
I got some unfinished bayonet blades from Solingen. Stored there in crates since the trade embargo prior WWI . Do you know why there is a pattern with a longer ricasso and one with a shorter ricasso? All have the pommel attached with two pins ground flush and are braces on with a copper alloy. The guard also braced on (but only on two examples, others are without guard). Is yours also made that way? Do you thing they are worth more than making them into gardening tools? (The slot for the lug is not machined jet. I ask Eikhorn what it would cost and they say finishing them would cost 70€(or more) a piece.
I think the reason the smle was retained after the war to end all wars, was that Britain had just about enough of war, and besides, they just fought the war to end all wars, those damn krauts won't be shooting at us with mausers anytime soon!

That P14 looks exquisite. The wood is astonishing.
Spiffing. Cheers Neil.
Was I the only person waiting to hear "They don't like it up them" at the end as the bayonet was mounted ?
Nice video on a somewhat overlooked weapon.
We say thirty odd six in the states and they do hold six. Great rifle. We also say flaming bomb. My favorite US bayonet.
I've shot two Model 1917's and they both allowed six .30-06 rounds in the magazine.
loved the video. The U.S. Rifle Model of 1917's that were sent to Great Britain had a red stripe painted around the fore stock. I have a 1918 made Eddystone that made it back home and still has a faint stripe visible. You can get 6 30-06 rounds into the magazine of a 1917, I'm thinking it's because the -06 is a timeless round.
Might not be a SMLE but it's still gorgeous rifle.
I am surprised there are not more of these old warhorses around. I would like to shoot one, but have never had the chance. The .276 Enfield was a really overpowered round, comparable to the 7mm Remington Magnum i believe, it could have lead to entire armies flinching everytime they pulled the trigger !
Oh the smoooooth action. The ascot...perfect for a gun room!
