I’m in Canada but I’m a dual citizen. There are more Pattern 14’s up here than M1917 Enfields. I think one or the other is probably the best rifle of WW1. A marriage of Enfield and Mauser with better sights than either.

Nice! My wife is Canadian. I’m Upstate New York. Canada is littered with Enfields. British.303 took more moose in Canada than any other caliber. I myself do not own a .303 but I am however, the proud owner of a minty fresh US Model of 1917 in 30-06 made by Winchester all around. Has very little collector’s value because it was sporterized possibly in the 1930’s and very tastefully executed. Definitely done by a master gunsmith and talented wood worker. Extremely unique and superior to most hunting rifles today.

I generally agree but think the P14 the (slightly) better rifle only for the more balanced nature of .303British. The .30-06 is just a bit too overpowered for what it needs (needed) to do and the easier recoil of the .303B still kept the target “pinned” when hit. ❤

@@RabbitusMaximus Have to disagree with that conclusion. Both .303 and 30’06 are old cartridges but 19th century is a little too old for me. The P14 was intended to shoot the .276 Enfield which, if they could have tamed it, would have been a superior cartridge to either the .303 or 30’06. If I am forced choose between .303 or .30’06 I would choose the latter due to its higher muzzle velocity, flatter shooting, greater commercial availability and variety of loads. Though outdated the 30’06 is the better cartridge based on any type of objective measure. But, living in Canada, I get the nostalgic pull of the .303 due, almost exclusively, to the aesthetic of the Lee Enfield platform rather than any advantage, real or imagined, of the cartridge itself.

@@Chiller01 I hear ya …. Another point for the P14 as a .303 launcher over the SMLE in my opinion is its forward locking lugs and mauser action finally give .303 (and that pissy sorta bottleneck) a reloader’s chance of avoiding excessive case stretch and extending brass life. Agreed on the .276 …for both the P13 and the original Garand design intent -but both govts went with “what worked” . Cheers from the frozen northeast of the US

I have a P-14 that is probably one of the most accurate rifles I have . It is freaking amazing. with Mk VII ball ammo that is. Modern Factory ammo, not so much. I am not sure how, but it is in at least 95% condition.

Just recently cleaned my 1 mk3*. Not sure what all that really means but it's a long branch in pretty good condition with a rack # painted on the buttstock. I had to fiddle with the front sight a little but it is a smooth and accurate rifle. I guess since your life would have depended on it you would get over the weight and all that kit. I can't imagine how it must have been in North Africa. Guess that's why the British had those short shorts! Great information. Thanks

@@misha5670 don't know how that information got stuck in my brain! Under the bolt on the band attached to the trigger guard it reads:
M.A. Lithgow SMLE looks like a 2 in Roman numerals maybe a 3 with asterisk and below that 1942. Sorry for the dillweed information. No way to run a business!

@@misha5670 further looking reveals OA on rear sight ears and barrel bands. Serial number is on barrel cap and receiver?I'm assuming the OA refers to the arsenal or armory in Australia.

@@nedanschutz No worries, happens to me all the time where a false piece of info gets stuck in the brain for years for no real good reason lol. Yep, Australia made the No. 1 MK III throughout WWII, so that all checks out. The whole Canada + SMLE thing is pretty odd. That was why originally they made the Ross rifle series since back before WWI, England didn't want to give Canada production rights to the SMLE. That + a lot of nationalism too of course, cheers.
