Great video. I do want to point out that that piece you refer to as a 'nut' that holds the SSD in place is actually a washer. It has no threads in it and does not serve as a fastener, but rather a spacer. The technical type of washer is a barrel washer. You could also refer to it as a spacer. This could help in future videos when someone is trying to identify parts. Still a very easy to follow video and should help everyone to upgrade their storage, at least until sony decides to come out with some slim or new revision of the form factor, which they seem to do with every generation of console it seems.
@Suicide Kyd I used the word spacer, you are just being a troll. The technical term for its design is both barrel washer and bushing. Spacer is a description and not an actual part. When one refers to flat washers, fender washers, split washers, and star washers, they have very specific appearances, as does a barrel washer. A "spacer" describes a role that can be any size or shape. A FLAT washer serves as a spacer if the bolt is too long without it. All washers are spacers, it merely matters the direction they distribute the load from the torque. Maybe you shouldn't try to debate mechanical engineering principles with a mechanical engineer while still in high school. The point is that it is most definitely NOT a nut as it has no threads.
Don't get heatsinks like these with rubber/silicon bands. these can snap with heat... and these gen 4 m.2s put out a lot of heat. Buy an M.2 like the SN850 with a prebuilt heatsink or at least a better one with screws.
Thanks for the quick and easy tutorial. Completed the install within 10 minutes while sitting in my car in a school parking lot during my kid’s lacrosse practice. Cheers! Used the same SSD as in your video but with the 2TB version and a heat sink built onto the SSD. WD_BLACK SN850 NVMe SSD GAME DRIVE+HEATSINK 2TB GEN4 7000 MB/s
I got a 2tb 980 pro just waiting for the official software to come out so I can install it . That combined with the external 2tb ssd I'm using I'll have 4.6 terabytes total
I've got the same heatsink as you. Seems to be a lot of complaints about the rubber bands not lasting long term so i'm unsure whether to change it or not. I am in the beta already
I would probably say yes should look into getting another heat sink, those drives can get a bit toasty and those rubber bands might not last as long under heat, never know the quality of rubber bands
the NVME drive will most likely sit anywhere from 40-60C, which is pretty dang hot. Those rubber band type heatsinks I think were designed more for PC's that have direct airflow over it.
Hello Sir, This is Srikanth. That video is grate because of explanations. i was asking how to install, can i play the games from the SSD in ps5 to the vendor and sales manager when brought the ps5 but no one knows the answer properly and now I'm clear i should trust RUclips (Push Square) persons like U. Thank you for the detail explanation😌. I just still one question. How much TB it supports like 4tb or 8tb. Kindly reply
Is there a way to move game data from a smaller SSD to a larger SSD in the future for ps5? I have a 1tb SSD installed and was wondering if i could move that data to a 2tb one
What screwdriver did you use for the screw inside the SSD? I heard its easy to strip the head so I don't want to be in that situation as I wouldn't have a clue how to get the screw off. Many thanks chris
For the WD SN850, many are saying the sticker is useless and just a normal sticker. Seeing two camps here…saying remove it, as it comes off easy and store it in package in case of warranty. Others say leave it on..but unlike Samsung it doesn’t have the metallic underside. I’m seeing many RUclips PS5 installations of the WD SN850 take it off, before putting on heatsink. Thoughts on this?
Does anyone know why data is still being used under Console Storage Games and Apps? If I click on Games and Apps it says ‘there are no games or apps’ This is because I have shifted this data to m.2 ssd storage. Is there any way I can get around this to save space? Thanks in advance!
Put a blue 3rd party heatsink on my 2tb SN850 for only $8, much cheaper and better then factory Wd heatsink, it's way overpriced for what it is. Also leaving the NVME cover off so intake airflow will cool the ssd
I've been using a Samsung 980 Pro as an external ssd for PS5 and am going to install it in my PS5, will that have to be reformatted, losing all data, or will it be able to read the games I have stored on the drive?
Why does mostly every beta tester have an installation video on RUclips, but not one telling us whether they are having problems, or if the fan stays on all the time, does the PS5 get hot and turn off, has the chip caused any problems what so ever?, i mean that is what Beta testers are supposed to do right?
2:07 You left the sticker on the SSD and just placed the heatsink on top of that? I would've removed that sticker first, so the heatsink comes in direct contact with the chips.
it's makes very little difference tbh, mainly because the stickers are foil/metal based anyway. in some cases you can actually make the drive worse fitting a heatsink as the cheaper ones use an inferior thermal interface pad. (if your serious buy some thermal grizzly pads before fitting the sink). but tbh decent drives like samsung evo plus/pro's have thermal monitoring anyway. Personally i'll be leaving the sticker on for warranty/resale purposes, as the diffence of 1 or 2oC isn't worth worrying about tbh.
Great flow to the video but that great sync is an absolute no go. So far out of the large handful of reputable sources this is the only one I've seen using such a heat sink. This heat sink will not keep that SSD as cool as a simple screw assembled heat sink using a thermal pad on both sides of the SSD regardless if it's double sided or not. Best to protect such an expensive investment. Some better research and information would do this video wonders.
Please, can people stop recommending these proprietary heatsink that use rubber bands, they are prone to failure over time, for a similar price you are better to get a fixed/bolted heatsink for longevity.

To be clear, a regular cross head screwdriver will not suffice for the second (smaller) screw. A precision cross head is required.

Thank you. Very helpful. Watched video inits entirety as I bought an ssd that required a 3rd party heatsink.
Great video. Just installed a WD Black SN850 with heatsink and it was super easy following these instructions.
This is the most simple vid yet, thank you
Instructions were great and helped me install my new SSD!

thanks for the instructions, followed them and it all worked perfectly!!! well done guys!!
Great Video.
The most unnatural bit I found was removing the case lid.
After that it was a breeze
Thanks again!
Very well done. I was a little nervous to be honest but just did step by step with the very clear instructions and had zero issues. Thanks so much!
The video was very helpful and the process was well explained.

If your going to use the sn850, get a better heatsync then this guy did. Otherwise get the 980 pro since it does run slightly cooler.
Just get the SN850 with the prebuilt heatsink.

Is there a risk of putting it in without a heat sink?

I'm sure Sonys engineers have tested this enough to know its not going to overheat and shut the console down.
The second screw wouldn't come out and now it's completely ruined now idk what to do.
Mine doesn’t look like that after removing face plate. All black with one screw
Is there anywhere I can get this done professionally? I feel scared to do it myself 😂

For people that come accros this be careful removing the sticker. Offent times if you do, it voids your warranty
