To me Axe is doing a great job nowadays as he has found his own niche and style within Opeth, but there's no arguing with Lopez being the best drummer for the band's unique sound. To be fair, just being able to play these insanely technical songs as well as he does takes some major skills, and Axe's drumming on Watershed and Heritage is right up there next to Lopez' records in my honest opinion.
Wow! The clean vocals here are amazing! The guys pulled perfectly the harmonies in the background as well!!! Nevermind the growling if they can make it that way live.
@SuffocateJav90 Si man, si la he visto, viendo esa entrevista nos da un poco de esperanza de volver a escuchar esa brutalidad de voz que solia tener. Saludos.
@MetallicOpeth I think he'll back go back to using death growls...the band just wants to try something fresh and new at the moment. At the show tonight in NYC he even said "Thank you for being so patient with this band. We're just trying something a little different tonight."
@Serpivate Hey I'm in the same boat. I liked the odd song by the band but was never really in-tune with their music. But seeing them live was incredible. You can understand the music more and really feel the sheer power of it all. Amazing. Definitely the best band at sonisphere in my eyes.
Hes saying they come from switerland but not in the sence of their origin, the previous gig the did was in switerland, thats why he said, "We come all the way from switerland to play to you guys" and of course, he said "Dont blame me, Im just a poor cloock maker from switerland" because it matches perfect with his previous joke about eating chocolate and stuff, or at least, thats the way I see it.
@66EvilChuck Martin Lopez signed Opeth but Axe is now their drummer. Neither is better than the other. They have different styles. Lopez is more groovy, Axe is much better at the speed. they are both equally unmatched.
but but... I knew it! Mikael has not lost his growls! he sounds very good in this video and all the other videos from sonisphere UK! The new album is gonna be great with or without growls :) i am sure! it will still be creepy and brutal in some ways!
Can You Give Him a Break ? He Growl the Fuck Out of Him since 1993 XD hahaha But Yeah its sad :( but I've seen them live in April... and his growls were AWESOME :)
@TheTwilightIsMyRobe His vocals have changed. I like them to. He stated in an interview that he is not that much interested in growling. Maybe that is why his voice changed,
@MetallicOpeth I think he'll back go back using death growls...the band just wants to try something fresh and new at the moment. At the show tonight in NYC he even said "Thank you for being so patient with this band. We're just trying something a little different tonight."
He still fits better than Akesson (the biggest mistake the band has ever made. For example listen to his clean parts in The Grand Conjuration from the same concert). IMO Akerfeldt, Lindgren, Wiberg, Mendz & Lopez were their best lineup and they are all irreplaceable.
Growling some 20~ years straight gotta fuck up your vocal chords, don't you think? Then again, he's pretty good at it, might be just the age. While proper technique can save you a lot of strain, there's not much to do against the wear and tear that comes with aging.
@Colbystrns it definitely sounds badass. I think he's finally realized he is going to have to abandon the deep blood churning growls bc his voice just cant handle it
Gee people stop COMPLAINING about the vocals, his growls are brutal. Sheesh. A recording with a camera will never be equal to being there live, also reason why keyboards are barely heard
@jjuliok Yep , I know. But then one sec after that Fredrik appears. I was trying to pick the right time here........ I aways make mistakes. ( sorry for the delay )
I think his involvement with his old band Bloodbath had an influence on the sound of his growling. Listen to some of their stuff and you'll see the growls sound the same as they do here. I think I prefer his Opethy deep growls as opposed to these raspy sounding ones though. :\
The "h" can mean both depending on the context, and that was me being honest and not humble! ;) Yes, Lopez has the rhytm in his blood and I totally agree with that, and the latest albums would be insanely good if he was still drumming for Opeth. At the same time, Axe comes from a completely different musical background with more agressive and pure deathmetal drumming, and I'm so darn impressed at what he's achieved in the band carrying that burden of replacing one of the best drummers ever.
He's not just a DM drummer, Axe has a well-rounded palette of training. If he has a fault, its usually that he's TOO precise rather than the loose, groovy feel of Lopez.
the fact is, he's getting old. His wife probably says, "what, are you gonna do cookie monster vocals when your'e seventy? You better start creating music you can perform as your age progresses. If not, I will get a divorce and marry someone from Behemoth or something." and he said, " yes, dear." and "Heritage" was born, and now they are Jethro Tull. Simple as that, his bitch made him do it.
what was the setlist? It looks really similar to the setlist they played in portugal. (Face of Melinda/Master's Apprentices/The Lotus Eater/The Grand Conjuration,etc...)
This is the greatest music made by a clockmaker.
Funny part here is that the lead guitarist of Anthrax (Dan Spitz), actually did become a Swiss luxury clock maker :)
When Mikael's done with Opeth he can be a stand up comedian or someshit
This song becomes totally different at 2X speed... It's amazing
THAT'S FUCKING AWESOME
hahahaha
Clean than the normal speed lol
1.5X is better
This song makes me rally insane, i can't imagine what would I do if I were in a Opeth concert and they start to play this song..
Watch the musicians play, maybe?
"That looks pretty fucking stupid from here!" HAHAHAHAHA
*starts with double bass*
*few mins*
FUCK THIS SHIT THEY AINT GONNA NOTICE
that's why my timing is so good *ba dum tish*
EPIC.
My head was banging for the full 10 minutes. Severe bangover the next morning.
I love opeth

Only few bands could play those vocal harmonies so flawlessy in a live set! 🥰
In Arizona, it got quiet for a second and someone screamed "I love you Mikael!" he responded with "I love you too son"
The only thing that hasn't changed through all these years is Mendez headbanging as it's his last song playing live.
I have to watch this every day! It's so good!
rock, jazz, deth, musica del mundo, oscuridad, progresividad y vanguardia todo exquisitamente mezclado. I love this band .
2:58 best death metal vocal in the world
subtle "yeah i'm a genius what can you say"!
me and my friend were crying with laughter
"shut the fuck up axe" LMFAO
Bloody love this song
4:10 soooo evil
I think the difference is so clear between this and the blessed lamentations
Wow! The clean vocals here are amazing! The guys pulled perfectly the harmonies in the background as well!!! Nevermind the growling if they can make it that way live.
Mikael is on fire. His growls are incredible!
I love this guy :D
@SuffocateJav90 Si man, si la he visto, viendo esa entrevista nos da un poco de esperanza de volver a escuchar esa brutalidad de voz que solia tener.
Saludos.
Al parecer difícil que vuelva
I want to marry the sound mixer!! Oh My Sweet Lord! That sounds in-fucking-credible
best band ever!!!!!!!!!!
@MetallicOpeth I think he'll back go back to using death growls...the band just wants to try something fresh and new at the moment. At the show tonight in NYC he even said "Thank you for being so patient with this band. We're just trying something a little different tonight."
LOL'ed so Hard @ 'That looks pretty fucking stupid from here!' OH MY GOD! XD
They're there; they were never missing.
wow, this growling is actually much better than in Royal Albert Hall, great! now looking forward to their show in wacken this year :)
@Serpivate

God that opening riff is just SICK
Good man for uploading this. They were amazing last sunday.
I was planning on a "like" for this video, but Mikael's jokes sent it straight to my favorites.
I was there in the back hahaha
I fucking love this band
So solid, incredible harmonies. Mikael is my new god.
Loved this video! All the best!!
Mendez is an amimal, the fucking wolf man!
Someone has to tell me where to find those killer pants Mikeal is wearing! Great show, love this band!!!
@oblivionFC
The vocals have improved no end in the past few years, I remember watching them in around 2003 and since then they've improved a lot live.
8:08 to 9:05 sounds pretty good on this version ! (all the song sound awesome too...)
I love Opeth! when Heritage comes out, well all I have to say is "bye bye friends and outside world,Ive got the new Opeth album"
Oh, my love...
Boromir on the keyboards... meanwhile Legolas on the drums...
one just does not simply rock into Opeth.
The new album is gonna be great with or without growls :) i am sure! it will still be creepy and brutal in some ways!
well, he has lost anyway
@@inexistence17 nah.
Can You Give Him a Break ? He Growl the Fuck Out of Him since 1993 XD hahaha But Yeah its sad :( but I've seen them live in April... and his growls were AWESOME :)
opeth kick ass
Hes starting to sound a little bit better than the gig in Bloodstock with Bloodbath, I hope he can get back his legendary growls soon.
I can't help but notice there's a guy in the crowd wearing a fucking army helmet. HAHAHA Just the kind of shit Mike would love.
Man, I wish Opeth would play @ Roskilde Festival 2012!
Holy shit, that growl!
awesome performance !!
Not my personal favorite... but Opeth live is just too awesome... the vocal harmony left me speechless
Ahh I was there yesterday, front row!, fucking amazing!!, Mikael you're a fucking god!, Opeth are amazing! \m/
a lesson in music!!
@babytweeze85 because sweden always gets mistaken for switzerland
@TheTwilightIsMyRobe
His vocals have changed. I like them to.
He stated in an interview that he is not that much interested in growling. Maybe that is why his voice changed,
and Mikael is Aragorn!!!!
hanif_govan wow you are so weirdly accurate, im in love with both
He's joking, because so many people commonly mistake Sweden for Switzerland.
@TheZebra123123 Lol, the double bass of Axe has always been way better than Lopez :-P
@MetallicOpeth I think he'll back go back using death growls...the band just wants to try something fresh and new at the moment. At the show tonight in NYC he even said "Thank you for being so patient with this band. We're just trying something a little different tonight."
I've never been to an Opeth concert... TT_TT
He still fits better than Akesson (the biggest mistake the band has ever made. For example listen to his clean parts in The Grand Conjuration from the same concert). IMO Akerfeldt, Lindgren, Wiberg, Mendz & Lopez were their best lineup and they are all irreplaceable.
where did the double bass go?
hahahaha
Bob thanks for y great comment.
freaking tune
LOLS xD 5:06
It seems that his growls have become significantly worse, but his clean vocals have become better.
I think he's finally realized he is going to have to abandon the deep blood churning growls bc his voice just cant handle it
@csmanuel86 He just forgot how to growl, as he was expanding his clean vocals, that's essentially it.
how come it doesn't sound like that on the album?
I don't know bro, probably because it's live ya nugget?
joakim svalberg? yngwie's keyboardist of G3 2003? hellyeah \m/
Shut up Axe LOL
LOL someone said Fredrik looks like a frog. Well, I can see why...hahahaha 8:28
thanks for this
Best frontman ever.
@Shaytaan92
Or maybe its the fact that his voice is changing so he doesn't like doing it anymore. So more like vice-versa.
Gee people stop COMPLAINING about the vocals, his growls are brutal. Sheesh. A recording with a camera will never be equal to being there live, also reason why keyboards are barely heard
Just one word...: "PerfectAwrrrrr"👌😈😈😊
no its just much brutal approach so that you can hear more what he says then before
@jjuliok Yep , I know. But then one sec after that Fredrik appears. I was trying to pick the right time here........ I aways make mistakes. ( sorry for the delay )
He growls like a god here Oo
@kevinryman92 At the 8:28 is Joakim...
I think his involvement with his old band Bloodbath had an influence on the sound of his growling. Listen to some of their stuff and you'll see the growls sound the same as they do here. I think I prefer his Opethy deep growls as opposed to these raspy sounding ones though. :\
@npnaia well maybe this show was before he noticed the monitors were the problem?
The "h" can mean both depending on the context, and that was me being honest and not humble! ;)

@TheTwilightIsMyRobe He's not doing them anymore.
yep, that's right, Gimli on the lead guitar.
He growled betther before! :p but fucking god now ;P
El sonido o la mezcla está muy mal hecha suena muy mal, Åkerfeldt suena vocalmente brutal!! Lástima la bajá calidad del sonido..
what was the setlist? It looks really similar to the setlist they played in portugal.
(Face of Melinda/Master's Apprentices/The Lotus Eater/The Grand Conjuration,etc...)
Axe is a hottie
@TheTwilightIsMyRobe imo it soudns great here!
