The video is very well done. However, when does a "tune-up" NOT include carburetor adjustments? The fuel mixture certainly changes after replacing the fuel and air filters! At least MENTION the three adjustments (L, H, and LA), and what sequence and direction would be used - even if they are not touched for this part of the tune-up. Still, your video is MUCH better than most - THANKS!
I know this video was made awhile ago but it was just what I needed today. Trimmer is working perfectly now, thanks to you! I appreciated one by one item work through. Never worked on a trimmer before but I feel a little better equipped now 😊
Good clear concise video. The photography and your clear voice is excellent as are the instructions. Thanks! I would like to make a couple of suggestions however based on many decades of doing this type of work. First is that you should use a less flammable and more cost effective method to clean the trimmer. There are much easier and safer methods that actually cost much less to use, never mind that you are one static spark away from going up in smoke. I've seen it happen, not very nice. Also you would be much less prone to introduce dirt and debris into the carb /fuel system or the engine if you performed a thorough exterior cleaning prior to opening components that are sensitive to dirt. The interior of the engine and fuel system are very sensitive to foreign matter, take whatever steps are needed so as not to make the engine more sick than before you work on it. Don't get me wrong, I'm not here to dump on you, only trying to pass on some of the lessons I learned along the way. You are already way above the average bear in regards to the quality of your video.
We have a stihl about 2 years old now. Havent used it a whole bunch, but when started and the first 10 minutes it burns a bit of oil. Makes some clouds out of the exhaust when it's revved up and the exhaust is very black. It still runs really strong though. Is this normal behavior or are the piston rings bad possibly?
Never mind, looking at the screw I thought it was a hex but it's actually at torx (t-21) so I figured it out. Thank you so much for putting up this video, very helpful. I was able to clean the exhaust screen and now it's starts up easily. Waiting on my parts kit and will finish the job.
The hex wrench you are using to take the engine cover off, can you please tell me what size hex that is? Mine did not come with one and I need to get that off to get to the exhaust screen and clean it. Thank you.
Thank You Very Much. I've owned the edger for 10 years and was not aware of the fuel filter and I was wondering where the spark arrester was located. I thought that it was like the arrester on my FS 45 brushcutter. No it is not this one requires removing the aft access panel (sorry I'm a aircraft mechanic/inspector my Items names are as such) where as the FS 45 is "spark plug like" R&R. Remove it, burn it with a propane torch, brush and blow and reinstall it. Again thanks.
It really is easy to do and this video sure helped to see it done. Hard part for me was how tight to make the spark plug. Also, I didn’t have long needle nose pliers, so I made a small hook out of clean wire and retrieved the fuel filter. It has plenty of hose in the tank which made it easy to retrieve. Yours didn’t show a spark plug cover like mine has. It takes a firm tug to remove it and get to the spark plug cap. Thanks for making this a very do-able project for me!
Real glad I found this video. My old trimmer is bogging down pretty hard, your step by step gives me hopes I'll be able to tune up the old man. Cheers!
whenever i remove the air filter there is always a good amount of gas around the rubber seal. Trimmer has to be constantly throttled with rpm or it will die
Dude I’m from Joplin too lol. I didn’t realize until I seen on ur receipt S and H. I was like. I literally JUST bought a new spool and cover . Like 2 min ago from there they close at 1 😂😂😂
Nice video. I also have Stihl trimmer which just quit running suddenly. I will probably do same stuff you did to yours, fuel filter, air filter, plus i mixed up some new gas for mine. Need to also put spark in while doing.
Thank you much u were a huge help to me my trimmer is fixed tune it up the repair shop wanted 160 -180 I got the tune up kit for under 20 dollars and cleaned the muffler screen
Thanks for the video. 2 comments, should have sprayed it down before you opened up the internals and second, nothing even looked bad. I'm guessing it was still performing strong?
I cant say exactly as I've never done it but generally it's only a few screws to remove the covers. Should be pretty self explanatory from there. Honestly, it wouldn't surprise me if the cable wasn't serviceable. I would think they have that all squared away during production.
Two strokes burn oil, hence the mixed fuel. The oil fouls plugs. Depending on use it's a good idea to do yearly. Air and fuel filters can be replaced as needed. Basically if it's not running like it used to or it's having a hard time starting, staying running or otherwise it's definitely time.
I bought the Stihl Ultra for the extended warranty and used it for the first 5 years. Recently I added some echo equipment to the fleet and switched to the Echo Red Armor.
I did this and immediately snapped the cable to the plug. Ill have to be honest ive really disliked Stihl since purchasing and this was the icing on the cake
This thing is a piece of crap. It literally sprays you with grass like the guard isn’t long enough. My featerlite didn’t even do that. I use to wear shorts and do Yardwork. Now I’m forced to wear pants.
The guard is trash but doesn’t make this unit a piece of crap. It’s only designed for occasional use, anything larger than 2-3 acres and you’re going to run into fatigue for average users. Still has plenty of power and long spool for string.

Glad to hear! Thanks for leaving the positive feedback.
Stihl needs to get more generous with that plug wire. It's just too short for comfort. Nice video. Thank you for making and posting it.
Very nice video. Just one question. What is that spray you blasted on the carb?

@@ThriftyGarage carburetor cleaner
For those reading this old comment, don't use carb cleaner on plastic.
We don’t need no stinkin manual when we have Thrifty.
Well done this kinda stuff is super useful
Great video - thorough, yet simple. Just what I needed! thx
You're welcome!
Thank you

Recommend you clean before taking apart carb cleaner or just use fuel keep up the good work !

So you did not feel the need to clean the area around the primer bulb before you took it apart ?

*I have Stihl FS 56RC weed eater. And I'm noticing it's starting to vibrate excessively a lil bit. Any idea what that may be??*
Wow! Hank, thanks for the information. 👍
The starter I had a lot of trouble getting to line back up when I put it back on .

Clear, very, very helpful video. Saved me lots of time and lots of money. You're very good at thei!
do you have a video on the throttle of this one
I do have a few review videos but non specifically regarding the throttle.
I have this same trimmer. Starting to get a slight fuel leak when stored vertically around the orange choke switch. Any ideas?
Sounds like a gasket.
Thanks for the video. 2 comments, should have sprayed it down before you opened up the internals and second, nothing even looked bad. I'm guessing it was still performing strong?
Preventative maintenance.
Can anyone tell me how to adjust the throttle cable on this exact unit? Can’t find anything on the web on this exact model...

What's the gap on the spark plug?
spark plug air gap???
Most plugs come pre gapped anymore. I used to cap the plugs on my 80s vehicles but learned it doesn’t matter anymore.
@@ThriftyGarage I still check my plug gap. remember when you had to set your points in the car when tune up time and change the condenser too
Exactly what I was looking for. Great job!
Awesome, thank you!
Thank you.
You have a link where you bought the parts from?
Stihl parts have to be purchased from an authorized dealer. Therefore there are no legitimate online sellers or associated links.
Thank you, very helpful.
You're welcome!
do you have the serial number for the carburetor? i have an fs 56 rc that needs a carb
Ebay has it.the whole kit around 15 bucks for everything
For a genuine Stihl carb you need to go to a dealer. But there are many aftermarket options online.
Is their a greece fitting on that for the head
I’ve never greased it. But I do believe there is a small hole for grease.
Good video. Thanks!
How often should all of this be done?
Spark plug every 100 hours. Clean and/or replace other parts if damaged.
Thanks, very helpful. Your delivery was clear and concise.
Thanks for your input. I really do appreciate it.
So when do you know that you have to tune your trimmer

Thrifty Garage . Okay thanks
What 2 stroke oil do u use
I bought the Stihl Ultra for the extended warranty and used it for the first 5 years. Recently I added some echo equipment to the fleet and switched to the Echo Red Armor.
I'd use Stihl premium too. It's synthetic oil, worth the up-charge. Keep the fuel fresh too. I dump mine if it's too old.
I did this and immediately snapped the cable to the plug. Ill have to be honest ive really disliked Stihl since purchasing and this was the icing on the cake
