  • To continue to engage our members during this COVID19, I have uploaded an old video from Tom Vuong from this November 2019 doing a heavy branch bending demonstration at the Los Angeles Arboretum. Tom is a gem of knowledge on heavy bending and California Juniper with techniques that he has developed himself using traditional methodology but using modern big box store material.
    I had this video stored on my phone and until now had the time to go back and upload it to RUclips for your enjoyment especially if you were not present during this club meeting. I hope you enjoyed the Safer @ Home Bonsai Series! Please if you like these type of videos please like, comment and subscribe. It give us an idea you enjoy them!

      His expertise in autobody repair plays a huge part in his ability to move branches easily.

    2 questions: 1. What are the paper towels he uses for the bending? Specific brand? 2. Can you apply this technique on deciduous trees like maples, hornbeams, etc.?

    • @BaikoenBonsai
      @BaikoenBonsai  3 года назад

      Similarly to the earlier post, Tom likes to use the cheapest thickest shop towels available. You usually do not apply these techniques to deciduous material as their life lines are rather thick and their branches lignify over 1 season as juniper and pines are "more" flexible in that aspects. But again those towels is really to protect the cambium so you can probably use towel wrapping to branches you want to bend that have a thin cambium to protect it.

    Is there a certain time of year you do this big of bend?

    • @BaikoenBonsai
      @BaikoenBonsai  11 месяцев назад

      You can do it anytime of the year. Best time is usually when the sap is flowing inside

    Great video. That bending down and twist to go up was the best thing I've learned. I'm not a member of the club but I'd love for you to check my collection some day. I live in Ojai Ca. I have to many trees and need to start selling

    How long would you have to keep such a branch wired down after bending?

    • @BaikoenBonsai
      @BaikoenBonsai  3 года назад +1

      That would depends on the growth and health of the tree and branch. More growth better health shorter the time frame. Usually at least 1 full season.

    Thank you for posting this demonstration. Tom is a very talented and unique Bonsai artist. I've never seen big bends done using a basic come along. He makes it looks easy. Do you know if he has used this technique to do big bends on other species like pine or is this specific to bending Junipers?

      He uses on everything and anything he can use mechanic advantage on. I should show you how he repots using an engine lift!

      @@BaikoenBonsai I saw the video you did when you visited Tom's place and from the size of his trees there is no doubt that an engine lift would be the tool of choice for transplanting those monsters! Would be great to see a video of one of his transplants. Please post if you have one.
