Ryan was confident that there would be no issues assuming the proper aftercare is given. It's getting a little extra protection now until such times as we can be sure of no frosts.
I'm sure this will recover just fine, i once almost completely ripped off a branch with one of my junipers and all that was holding it together was about an inch wide piece of cambium and bark so i used wire to hod it firmly together and then kept some moist paper towel wrapped around it that i only barely let dry once a day and it healed up like it was nothing.
I would love to make a life-sized "bonsai"/sculpted tree... (I.e. bend a cherry tree) to make my own little hangout nook to sit on and create a unique tree too
I repotteed my juniper and after having it for a couple years and practicing approach grafts on it ( was just a practice tree) I saw the tree within the tree. Very good feeling when your newer to practicing bonsai and start to see how to best use the raw material you own. Anyways I made a big mistake by taking a wedge off the top instead of taking the wedge from the bottom since I want to bend the branch down. My question is probably difficult to answer without seeing the tree but there is another point a couple inches away up the trunk ( or down since it's going to be a cascade) that would make a good looking natural transition by taking a wedge off the bottom off the trunk and im worried that I may have set back the plan for this tree because if I don't want to kill any branches above the wedge does the tree need time to reroute the flow of nutrients in case I disrupted that route with the first wedge on the top? Hope that makes sense. Can't believe I made the wedge on the top and is one of the dumbest mess ups I've done so far especially when you start to bend the branch down and the wedge gets wider and wider which then it obvious that if taken from the bottom it would come together and heal since the cambiums will be touching. Ugh
Nice work! When you cut out a wedge and bend the tree, how long does it take to heal? Does that slow the growth above where it was bent? I have never seen, or thought about that technique before, thanks for sharing this video!
I would avoid Autumn early Winter as the tree become dormant but I'd be happy to do this from late Winter on as the tree starts to be come active. Good aftercare is important, keep it out of drying winds and keep foliage misted for the first week or so if possible.
I apply this now to an amazing new bonsai creation, and i pray it will not eliminate the beutiful tree. Do you have any other recommendations?? Is it ok to put it right away under the sun or should it wait inside a house or a shelter for a while??
Gr8 work What tree was it What was its age and the wire come off at all What was the cream out put around the cuts Also can this be done to all trees ?? Iam in Australia and Iam very new to Bonsai
I read about this some years ago and did it on a yew that was still in the ground,it died.Since then i didnt want to try it on an expensive piece of raw material ?
Will the tree "connect" itself where you cut the wedges out to make it bend over more? Meaning will the two pieces fuse together over time as the tree heals and grows?
I'd say Yes you can, in fact, a tree in the ground will callous faster. However I'd wait until there is no real danger of frosts as you can't move it into shelter.
thou_shalt_kill 113 Ryan only did 6 years under masahiko and has been doing bonsai about 16 hours a day nearly every single day of the year ever since. I'm pretty sure he knows what a plant will survive.
This project is really really annoying to learn anything from! I was desperately want know why & how , or far you can hack the trunk, and what you were trying to achieve!!! All I see was you guys hacking the shit of it and bend the bloody thing. Nobody explain except :)
The visual detail on this video was excellent. Thanks for posting.
Thanks again for posting your videos Ian, this one was great.
I like the way you blow the trunk dust into Ryans face priceless.
That was the fastest response I ever got in my life!
Thanks for the info, BE. I'll get on it next April.
This was done in January, and the tree is growing strong now, no step back at all. Should heal over within a few years
Nice styling mr. Ryan. Amazing final form.
thanks n super team work!!!!
Nice job guys! Good idea for a great and beautiful tree!

watching and learning
Muy bueno este vídeo y el del tejo, gracias por ofrecernos la posibilidad de aprender.
Saludos desde España.
wow nice tnx for the new Techniques .hahaha lol make more so we learn more.idol
very interesting method to achieve tight bends on large branches. does the tree heal back together where the pie cuts were made?
I'm sure this will recover just fine, i once almost completely ripped off a branch with one of my junipers and all that was holding it together was about an inch wide piece of cambium and bark so i used wire to hod it firmly together and then kept some moist paper towel wrapped around it that i only barely let dry once a day and it healed up like it was nothing.
Tree was placed in a poly tunnel for protection and is budding strongly this spring.
BEATIFUL I LIKE THANK YOU,
amazing tree thank you
Thanks
Beautiful looking tree :0)

Congratulations
be nice to see if it recovers, great tree

What season would be best for such an operation? I have a thick-trunk Yew that could benefit from a bit of bending.
Nice ide ... 👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿

What season was the bending conducted and would that of been the appropriate time?
What is the right time to do this?

Update link in the beginning does not work.

Yes
Any update on this tree? Hahaha
Can I do this type of tree bending to already established trees in the garden. What type of winter protection will they need
I'd say Yes you can, in fact, a tree in the ground will callous faster. However I'd wait until there is no real danger of frosts as you can't move it into shelter.
Be sure to let us all see how it turned out. Bonsai lover Henk
It's doing well, getting a rewire shortly I believe. Will link an update soon on my blog www.bonsaieejit.com
Tank you will check in from time to time Henk
Bonsai Eejit
Is he cutting a few notches going down the trunk or is he going back over the same cut?
baconandeggs 2648 same cut, just making it deeper to reach the 50% Mark.
I noticed you would cut a notch in the branch and then bend it to where the 2 pieces touch. Will it fuse (grow) back together?
Andy Morgan yes that’s what happens with this technique
Bonsai Eejit Thank You, beautiful work.
this looks so brutal lol
good work though
Is this tree alive?
Start using bull nose snips for spinning wire. you can thank me later.
"I don't understand what you're saying". Ho-ho!
Very ambitious plan.. Your hurting the plant to much..
Camera man need training badly
Oh man that branch is dead now. Is not good tecnique
hehe yeah, lets saw the branch and go lunch after that and almost break it off.
I think Ryan has an idea of how plants and trees work...so no worries
thou_shalt_kill 113 Ryan only did 6 years under masahiko and has been doing bonsai about 16 hours a day nearly every single day of the year ever since. I'm pretty sure he knows what a plant will survive.
The tree died poor tree
Even you are master of master some of your trees will die

If you watch it again with the volume turned up your questions will be answered
