Great to see that you are back in Greece. Of all the traveling I have done so far (81 countries and counting)I love Greece the most!! I have stayed the summer on Paros & Naxos with my kids. Happy traveling!!
About the little churches: From old times to this day if you have a sailor or traveler in the family, and there is storms and you afraid that you won't see him again, and you go over a cliff or on a hill from where you can look far far away to the sea and see if his ship is coming, you pray and promise to God or saints that if they bring him back you are going to build a church. (If there is already a church on the spot, you may promise to buy an icon or something). When he comes back you have to keep your promise. We call this kind of promise tama (τάμα) Sorry about my English, I hope you understand the meaning.
My tour guide in Athens explained this as well when I was touring the Mycenaean King tomb in 2016. This is very similar to Asian culture, including India too. People build random shrines along the roads to thank God for fulling their prayers. The more I learned about Greek mythology, the more I think it's similar to Asian believes, there's a god for everything.
@@worldcitizeng6507 in the old archeant ways there was a god for everything. Thank you so much for giving this walkabout. I was in Crete in 1984 for a few months and met a Scandinavian woman who asked me to come along to this island. She had been several times before and it was even quieter in those days. I remember there being only 2 cafes at the pier and we slept under the 'umbrella' type trees on the beach. There were no tents and most people were nude on the beach. In fact, I got rather painful sunburn on my bum on the first day. I had been well-tanned because of being on Crete for 3 months, but of course I had been wearing shorts. Then, on this delightful island my white Scottish arse got frazzled. I guess it could have been worse had I fallen asleep on my back! I stayed for 2 weeks and headed back home with some great times. It was interesting you mentioned sharks and I suspect you are right in that they left a long time ago. Some fishermen still used dynamite in those days. It was frowned upon and the local military doctor said he would not help anyone injured if they were hurt using dynamite when fishing. Thankfully I never knew if he was bluffing. Anyway, your video brought back some great memories and my time on the island feels like yesterday. Best wishes, Gavin.
You are at the southest part of the island of Crete close to Elafonissi and/or the Spakians' Land, and the little island to the far in the sea must be Gavdos and Gavdopoula. Have a nice time Gabriello!
There are many remote Greek islands with restaurants but think this is the one I went for a day several years ago. Not going to name it because I do not want to ruin it by tourism either the locals want that to happen.

The islands you can't miss are the ionians on the west, I know you've been to Corfu but there's 6 other green beautiful islands with the bluest water imaginable. Enjoy

Μπραβο σου. I was hoping you would come back to Greece--and here you are. What a wonderful, remote location. My joy at your presence there is only equaled by my envy!
Hi Gabriel, I get the feeling you want to get the Island for yourself so it doesn't get so touristy and overrun with many people. I believe that the Greek Islands are your favorite locations overall it seems to have an overall ideal climate you enjoy most.
I love the fact "rest and relaxation" as if you actually work 9-5 every day for someone burdened by chores and stuff! For someone having each day as a holiday pardon em I find it amusing.
Greece is an Orthodox country. The remote churches are there because at some point there was or maybe there still is a monastery around or a hermit monk that lives there. When I say lives thet doesn't mean he has a house, he may live in a cave or just out of site near by. Service usually is dayly not only on Sundays and commonly takes place at night. I hope that solves the mistery
So people hike up to the top of that mountain every day in the dark to go to church? That's dedicated. The thing is, several people have written detailed explanations under this video now, all of which were completely different. So I can't say the mystery is necessarily solved, but I'm cool with that. :) I think the hermit monk theory makes a lot of sense though.
@@GabrielTravelerVideos If you visit Meteora in Greece, before the roads were built, they used to climb the mountain with ropes, live in caves you can see on the side of the mountain. Good video, Gabe. You always seem most at peace in Greece. I like the selection of music too, went well with the vibe. I'd be curious too about why those churches are in the middle of nowhere.
Wonderful island, wonderful Greece. The island's name can be found by a hint in the Minimarket name: Λιβυκόν = Libyan. So it definitely must be in the Libyan Sea. I suppose these churches are to lost souls at sea what lighthouses are to ships. In ancient Greece their most sacred place was the Oracle at Delphi which is quite remote indeed. To the Greeks however, remoteness be damned, the Oracle was there because they thought the site was the middle of the world. How did they come to this conclusion? Zeus left fly two eagles in opposite directions; they met at Delphi, thus it must be the center of earth. Actually any place can be along longitude lines---if we all agree to it. I guess you can say that to the Greeks it was the BC precursor to the prime meridian. Then the British decided that indeed such places were much too remote so they drew a middle-of-the-earth line (that separates east and west) and made sure it went through their offices outside London. We all agreed to it and thus it is. Of course there is no sacred shrine---mainly tourists.
