Also, longterm reliability is always in the back of my mind. Yes, the N has a 10 year/ 100k mile warranty but I've already had to get my high pressure fuel pump replaced at Hyundai at 12k miles.
It's such a good car. The way I think of this car is if there was a 1 series zhp in the line up during the days of the E46 zhp 3 Series. Smaller rwd car that won't see back seat time like you would with a 3 series, but with a good interior layout, a step less in materials, a 2.4L instead of the 3.0, good styling. Then a similar mantra to the zhp bits in that there is a lsd with a high final drive ratio and a higher redline. The ethos of this car make me sad as to what BMW has become. I wish you could buy a new refined E46 ZHP. That was the best car ever made. Just like this GR86, if you wanted more you could supercharge it and not have to deal with the price and complexities of the M engine.
The BRZ/86 is always referred to as a good learning tool, something like a small 250cc motorbike. The aftermarket parts selection will be super nice! 👍
im really interested in seeing the potential of the stock internals, like a side by side turbo kit comparison from 2.0L to 2.4L. What viable levels of boost to turbo size can be claimed as IDEAL with the limits/tunes that has been seen with the 2.0L and if the 2.4L has better internals or boost potential. Even though in NA form im sure it will be a hoot the GR86. I just am so interested in the limits of the block/head and rear with a bolt on kit....vs the price of a 400z per ex or so on.

Inflation is like toothpaste, it doesn’t go back in the tube. If you want one, go get one. I had heard this was going to be a solid improvement. If Matt, who will talk smack about his own car, sounds like a fan boy. I’m in!
It depends if inflation is a result of long term money supply issues or short term supply chain issues. Seeing as how supply lags demand and the nation and the planet as a whole has come from a year long lockdown from a pandemic, it's most likely supply chain not catching up with the new found demand.
Farhan Chowdhury don’t get lost in the weeds here. The world has far more than doubled the currency supply in the last year alone. That is inflation, what is reported as inflation is simply a manipulatable number loosely associated with the effect inflation has on prices of goods and services. Currently running about 13% as CPI was measured in 1980. I expect it to run much higher… and soon.

We're living in the greatest moment in car history as manufacturers keep making these amazing final generation gas engines and manual transmissions before they go extinct which are the best cars that have ever been made and ever will be, and this is perhaps top of that heap. I've been wishing for a Porsche GT3, but this thing at the opposite end of the price spectrum somehow seems even better.

Probably going to trade my 350z for one in a few years once there are some used ones or previous year models still on the lot needing to be sold at a cheaper price on the market . Z is heavier, understeers and it’s 0-60 is only .6 of a second faster than the new 86. The z was good for its time when no one really had a 300 hp v6 as 4 cylinders needed turbos just to make 200 in the 2000s . but I like this too and will make a better track/ canyon car than the heavy z. The z is really more or less a car for the highway than anything
Too bad that in my country they cost the same as vw gti or a megane rs so no will buy one, paying 45k just to be marginally faster than a mx5 is a hard sell
In the modern chase for power people have forgotten the sheer joy of thrashing a low power, low grip car. Its so much more fun the drive a slow car fast than a fast car slow.
This car when people start Turbocharging/supercharging them, will be a absolute fun machine. Not saying that it isn’t fun stock, but will some power mods it will be killer.
Definitely, I remember seeing a supercharged one at wbm and seeing that it only made 225 to the wheels, kinda pathetic for a 2.0. Will be interesting to see what these will make with some forced induction
Ok, I'm starting to really like this car, but I'm a bit of a horse power whore, especially since most of my commute is on a brand new, empty highway. It would hurt not to feel anything doing little pulls here and there. Would love this with little twins or a torquey v6, 280-300 hp at wheel should be enough for my needs at this weight. And hell, this would be a straight up killer machine with the b58 from my bimmer.

They added power and kept the weight under 3k lbs. I think it's a great place for a young enthusiast to start.
The new Z has piqued my interest.
Agreed. 400hp + Twin Turbo + Manual + RWD? Are we in 1995? 😁
When Matt gets excited over a car and the way it drives, angels get their wings.
Highly considering trading in my '20 Veloster N Performance Pack for one of these...
@R J what about the Veloster makes you want to get out of it?
@@TristonBrownfield Front wheel drive?
@@theburias I enjoyed a ND2 for a year but just got tired of driving solo my wife and son just weren’t comfortable in the passenger seat. The Miata was a blast to drive and could see myself owning another one someday. The new 86 may be the perfect compromise for me.
@@TristonBrownfield ND2 perfect car for bachelors making their way to the escorts motel room.
@@TristonBrownfield It's a fun car, but a big part of me misses RWD. First car was an 83 Supra (2001 Mustang V6 automatic doesn't count, we don't talk about that) and that car might have been just as much fun as the N.

Glad you recovered your case! Looking forward to hearing about it on the podcast!
hey I recognize that guy at 1:44
The BRZ/86 is always referred to as a good learning tool, something like a small 250cc motorbike.
Back in 2017 i was looking into getting a newer car and i test drove a 2013 FRS and a bunch of other cars.. ended up with the S2K, but i was just a tad disappointed with the engine.. now this thing got more power and other things.. Looks like it got the engine bump it needed!
You know Honda got the Type R right when it even gets a mention in this video.
I love Matt's reviews on new cars under 50k!
wow the license plate holder in the back is lower. that thing weighs a whopping 400 grams, plate included. Do they recommed to get a small license plate with as little letters/numbers as possible? to save some more weight. because race car!! Toyota is killing it
matt is putting all that weight saving of the car back in the drivers seat
Fake engine sound being pumped in is quite a bit over the top.
Good to see you got your bag back.
Hope the stress is in remission.
I love my gr supra but i regret getting rid of my frs.... It was slow but it handle awesome. So light and nimble
Glad you got your case back, man.
I searched all day yesterday for your video. Stoked to hear you got the case back!
I expect it to run much higher… and soon.
i feel like wet sump boxer engines are time bombs they seem to suffer oil starvation easier that other wet sump configurations and there must be a reason all Porsches are drysump
Ben over at Gears and Gasoline put an aftermarket baffled oil pan on his old Forester XT. Might be a good investment for anyone that drives theirs hard.
Great review as always. I made the mistake of putting tires on my BRZ that have too much grip and it honestly has changed the car for the worse in the canyons. Matt explained the issue perfectly. I can’t speak for the track though.
Primacy suck in the real world - keep them if you feel like sliding around on a track day, but switching to the Pilots for day to day WILL save you from rest ending a Camry with sticker tires, or curbing the thing on an on ramp. Scary tires on the street.
I really disagree imo. I own an 19 BRZ and it no way has the feel of 90s cars with hyd steering and lightness..
I have an allocation out for a base gr86 manual. Going to be my 12 month daily with some snows. Can’t wait
It was nice to see Matt hooning the snot out of it. Nice car control my friend.
Matt looked genuinely stoked while driving this car, which is pretty much all I need to know at this point. I like it. I want one.
Came back here to say I bought a '23 BRZ Sport Tech because it was easier to get in Canada. It does not dissapoint in all the areas that matter to a driving enthusiast.
Oh snap! You got your footage back! Glad to see you having a blast in this thing. What a fun little car.
Matt you're the man, I can hardly speak to the camera whilst driving normally let alone going nuts at a track 🤣
Does it drive better than a 20 year old Boxster?
But would you take this over a ND2 miata?
Great review! Can't wait to get my hands on one. Hopefully test drives aren't impossible to find.
The engine sounds really good, and the car looks pretty fast for 230 HP.
I guess being a good 100kg lighter than a Boxster shows in the corners
230 HP is a lot
@@carlosandleon in an age of 1500-2000 hypercars - I'm not sure if it is. I guess it depends on what you're used to. My car is about 340-ish horsepower, I enjoy it, it's quick for what it is, but it's definitely not an overwhelming experience.
@@SwapBlogRU have you even evee seen a 1500 hp hypercar in the metal?
@@carlosandleon may I ask what the point of your question is?
I like how it evolved instead of making something totally different.
I like that previous superchargers should bolt on
I worked at a Subaru dealer for a while and I always loved taking out the BRZ. Absolutely fantastic car and it looks like they've improved it considerably. I'd definitely love to pick one of these up at some point. Base model + brake stuff and tires would make a super fun car in the mountains.
How is the long term reliability bro?
When Toyota says it'll start "under $30,000 with destination" that means $29,995.
I wish that Mercedes-Benz C-Class coupe came in a manual !
Mercedes bring back the manuals
Thank god Matt got his gear back so I can watch this!
The taillights remind me of a 9th gen accord or Acura TLX 🤔
Got the camera gear back! Awesome, glad to see it.
Everything seems amazing except the rear end, looks like the back of a Honda Civic.
Just shows it should've been that from factory. Especially for the huge parts of the world where turbocharing N/A engines is illegal.
best looking car Toyota has ever made imo
"Trail break it dooooown" haha! Matt thanks for helping us feel how it feels to drive hard.
We don't get to hear what you did to earn the penalty!?
Glad you got your case back 🔥 The new 86 looks like a slam dunk
Glad the Japanese sports cars are making a comeback. Looking forward to the new GTR and Integra.
Just need a new s2000, mr2, and a rx-7 now
The peak torque at 3700 rpms will actually make this fun to drive around town.
Was really hoping the production guy who took the case would make in appearance
Ok, I'm starting to really like this car, but I'm a bit of a horse power whore, especially since most of my commute is on a brand new, empty highway. It would hurt not to feel anything doing little pulls here and there. Would love this with little twins or a torquey v6, 280-300 hp at wheel should be enough for my needs at this weight. And hell, this would be a straight up killer machine with the b58 from my bimmer.
With the black helmet blending into the roof liner, and the head sock, certain shots look like he is wearing a winter beanie instead of a helmet!
Great review, seems like a stellar car!
It really is a case of deja Vu with this car. Everyone is saying what they said about the original
Toyota making a comeback with the 86 and GR yaris.
Now I need to see Keiichi Tsuchiya drive it.
He has driven it.
Really glad that you managed to get your case back: good for you and good for us as we have this video! 😎
Is the infotainment the same in the base vs. premium? Are the seats/better speakers enough to warrant getting the premium. I’m attracted to the base to really learn more car control but it is a car I would probably use every day so those creature comforts might be nice.
Premium gets a better stereo. I didn’t turn on either
I just ordered one like this a few days ago. Base model in white. Only the base model manuel for us here in Spain. Don't know why but that's ok.
Hey I see Engineering Explained
I love my GT86 and this car I dont like, the front looks not good .. with this black wheels ..it looks not good .. I dont like the rear.. it looks like supra, but I like the spoiler from my GT86 more then this hump, at the side .. this "things" ends near the door ..it would looks bether if this is going to the rear wheel .. I DONT LIKE THE LOOK OF THIS CAR
How does everyone bitch about the shifter/clutch, pedal placement, throttle mapping, heel-toe, but somehow Matt doesn’t have an issue hauling on track?
Okay, but I really want the YARIS GR.
I have the Cammisa verdict, as well as Dave Patterson’s, but I was missing TST’s one! Awesome!
Regarding knee pads.... maybe you shouldn't posture yourself like a madam from Winnemucca? :)
Man I've been waiting for this!!!!
Hah! My 14 FRS with 273k miles is in the shop for that two piece power steering as we speak!
Damn I salute you, I just wish the kids didn’t abuse these FA20 as much its just absurd how expensive used motors are for these cars.
They should have aimed at the HP numbers of the Honda S2000, it's 2022 and a 4 cylinder has not being able to surpass the HP numbers of the S2K
Glad to see you got your camera gear back!
what is most fun for the streets, new GR86, used TT RS (2014), used 370z, or something else?
