This game wasn't horror-tier terrifying in any sense of the imagination, but it was atmospheric and incredibly fun to play. I can certainly see why people would place this game at the top of their lists.
+SilentTree It made me jump a lot mostly because I wasn't watching myself, only to get hit by a massive flail in the face - it's good stupid fun! And I love the campiness!
+SilentTree The beginning of the game was legitimately tense and scary. The first time I played this game as a kid and tried to survive the village onslaught segment, I got pretty freaked out (given, I was a kid). I'm playing through the PC port now, and I was still a little bit jumpy when I heard the chainsaw rev up behind me again. Now that i'm older and a more skilled gamer though, the game's horror aspect is much less prominent, and it feels much more like an action game. I really love the B-Movie aesthetic, cheesy one-liners, and over the top action segments for what they are.
+SilentTree RE 4 is the only "scary" game i played ever no other game has ever made me terrified when i first got introduced to the gel like monsters that nearly never die i got chills hearing that breathing sound.
i don't know why people say this game isn't horror. having a horde of insane villagers try to cut you to pieces with farming tools, in a backwards european village, is pretty fucking scary. i mean, there are actual horror movies with that plot. the fact the enemies don't speak english and you are a foreigner makes it more terrifying. you are in a country you don't know well, in an isolated place that technology has left behind, and the insane hordes of psychotic murderers who have left bodies and skulls all over the place, are shouting words at you that you can't even understand. setting it in another place and having the enemies all speak another language was genius. then you get to the castle, and the horror vibe is the creepy cultists. hearing them chant weird lines in spanish over and over in the back ground is always creepy as fuck. the game is constantly unsettling. in certain parts the game totally loses the horror vibe, like the island with all the soldier ganados, and some other parts of the game are pure action with no horror. but then the game goes and does something like throw you in a creepy abandoned laboratory with the most terrifying monsters to ever exist, while you walk down hallways and hear their creepy breathing down the hall, and have to force yourself to walk down that hallway towards it. that one part is the most scary any resident evil game has ever been. most of the horror comes more from the tension of many psychopaths trying to circle you while you precisely aim, rather than jump scares or having to constantly run away from enemies due to have no ammo, like the first few games. but it's still fear, it's just a more frantic kind of fear.
SilentTree man there still is terrifying moments like the Bella sisters, the castle was very atmospheric, and those regenerators, oh god those regenerators, just simply terrifying
Damn. Although I came here for a review of the PC port, and even though I was a bit annoyed about 5 mins in that I realized this is a review for RE4 in general, not the port, I stayed. This review was probably one of the best I've seen! Your voice, all the editing, everything was great! Not many "reviews" for games nowadays can do what this video did. Bravo! :)
I agree. I appreciate his honesty. I have grown tired of the bandwagon critic and user reviews that praise this game like it was the holy grail of video games. I feel like Resident Evil 4 spawned this cesspool of Resident Evil games that followed. RE5 and 6 was, let's just say, poor attempts at a good Resident Evil game. Revelations was forgettable. I agree with his review and the way he told it like it is.
John Oliver Oh, I completely agree with you. I grew up on the old Resident Evil games, and RE: Code Veronica despite the tank controls and fixed camera, is still my favorite Resident Evil videogame. But, after the birth of Resident Evil 4, it helped bring about games like Dead Space. I just cannot go back to fixed camera and tank controls after that. I tried to play RE1 (remake) again, and I just could not do it. Even then, this does not change my opinion about the quality of the older Resident Evil games. They're still fantastic aside from those issues. And yeah, RE6 was pretty much bad news to the series.
I played RE4 for the first time back in 2014, and I was very impressed how addicting it is, and also, how masterfully the level design is. I cannot deny it. This game is one of the best Horror/Third Person Shooter's I've ever played. Simply a masterpiece...
***** Were is the past from be, as in "you were here yesterday". "Where" is a preposition of location, as in "where are you?". For this example the correct form would be: "Resident Evil 4, where roundhouse kicks are deadlier than bullets".
Yes, you wrote that. I'm just sensing that you doubt the clear fact presented by Vshalak that we, all of us, are roundhouse kick. I'm just joking about. Good day.
MR.rashed MR.rashed with Re4, the one big flaw I can pick out is its controls, other than that though they aren't bad once you get used to them and that's all I can really pick out. My favorite game of all time
@Ryan Hmm, there's the long loading times and the fact that it's a PS4 exclusive title, so the fastest soulsborne game will never get to be played at 60 FPS, which is a pity.
@@jofall91 I don't really see anything wrong with the controls since everything was built around them being this way. The bigger issue are large chunks of the island, which is definitely the weakest part. I'd say the village is 10/10 absolute videogame perfection from beginning to end and it could not possibly be better though.
Anima yes it is the weakest section, but has also one of the scariest moments in the game for me, the lab (and those horrifying regenerators). The village and Castle are so memorable and atmospheric and I love every moment of both locations. Masterpiece of a game.
04' and 05' were great, a perfect storm scenario happened where innovative PC games came out with console games that mastered the 6th generation hardware
*_ONLY FOUR TIMES??_* I've played through this game at least 22 times over the past decade and I'm still having an absolute blast with the game. That right there is how you tell that you got a masterpie
I literally fell asleep during that Ada Wong helicopter scene from RE6. The noise is so consistent, you're so far away from the action, and the gameplay requires so little thought that I just passed right out for the first and possibly last time ever while playing a video game.
I think the whole going from "Creepy unsettling village" to "Action and bombastic military camp" is an excellent example of game design. You start off with a weak pistol and you have really low health, giving you a sense of major helplessness. Everything is scary and creepy which makes things surviving that much more dramatic. However as you gain better weapons and perfect your skills on what to do to make the best out of your situations, it starts to feel more like youre dominating and feeling overpowered. You start weak, end strong, and the game evolves with you.
I think all the REs can be considered "fun". 6 I could only play once (in coop), never went back. RE5 I played a bunch of times (thanks to coop) and 4 on gamecube was cool imo. But then again I belong to those people who missed RE1/2/3 when they originally released. 1 and 0 HD IMO are waaaay better than 4 5 or 6. can't wait for the 2 remaster to finally get to play that.
Both Resident Evil 5 and Resident Evil 6 are great and very fun games and people only hate on them because they are not trying to be scary horror games.
Resident evil 5 was a great game if it was it's own thing. It just kinda pissed fans off how they slowly went from horror to twitchy action. I personally like the slow sluggish controls and the feeling that something behind me is going to grab me.
I think Resident Evil 4 killed the RE franchise in the same way that Aliens killed the Alien franchise. It added new elements that complemented the original, but those additions were misinterpreted and exaggerated by later additions to each respective series. After RE4, all survival horror games became action-oriented, but without that tongue-in-check element that you touched on here, and also lacking in the excitement that it brought. Likewise, after Aliens, every new addition to that series (aside from Alien 3, though I know how most people feel about that one) took the militarism and action and completely overblew it while missing the satire and political commentary.
Ugh, now that you mention it I *really* wish I had used that metaphor. The original version of this script said "RE4 killed RE in the same way that Netflix killed video rental, or how Facebook killed MySpace." I decided that neither of those worked and god, I wish I had thought of Alien->Aliens!
tdenzel101 While yes, that is most likely the cause of Resident Evil's downfall, my point is that the direction that Resident Evil 4 took the series was one that was on the surface quite different to the previous games, but it still very much honours them. However, when it came time to continue the franchise, those in charge of the newer games tried to follow in RE4's footsteps by making the games more and more about action and westernising them, because they didn't truly understand the act they were following. Basically what I'm saying is that yes, you're correct in that the change in creative staff led to the franchise's diminishing quality, but the subtle complexity of the title they were following simply went over their heads, causing the franchise to derail in their attempts to elaborate on it. That's why Resident Evil 4 killed the series.
+ModestEgg Aliens would have killed the franchise if, said aliens were spanish hillbillies with fake mexican accent. To me Aliens is the first RE game, when the second team comes in "more prepared" to see what happened to the previous unprepared team. RE4 is no Aliens, more like Jason X of the horror games (meaning no horror, just violence). And I´m super easy to scare with games, still finished 4, 5 and 6 thinking "well that was bland and forgettable", they are linear, padded, and silly. Only 1 RE shooter out of the 3 in the core series is remotely liked, RE4, cause it was new, and it was good as a game, without needing the resident evil IP at all...But Mario 4 wasnt a karting game, they released mario kart for that, and when dark souls wanted to make a more action oriented and fast paced game, they created dark souls...Resident evil as a survival horror, was a leader in the genre, had an identity...As a shooter, is a bland and subpar as they come, lost in the ocean of better shooters. So while i recognize all the technical and creative elements RE4 brought to the table, it really is what killed the franchise, no way to look at it any other way, they tried to do the same in 5, everyone hated it, same for 6 even more rightful hate... See, Racoon City, as bad as it is, and for sure worse than 5 and 6, never bothered me, because it had the shame to be a spinoff, its own thing, is ok to use elements form the IP, but don't try to push that shit as the continuation of a beloved franchise only for its style and genre... In classic RE games capcom would manage to make you scared shitless of a bunch of regular crows, in RE4, 5 and 6, you gun down waves of overdesigned abominations that trigger no emotional response from the player other than "shoot it down"...The fact that the halfassed revelations series has more to do with the classics, and seeing how its treated as a sidedish to the new "action games" is just embarrasing.
I think RE4 is a perfect example of brilliant pacing and level/enemy design. Though there are a lot of enemy encounters in the game, none of the encounters feel the same as they keep on building entirely new scenarios, there's always at least one twist, if not more than one or even a completely unique area or overhaul, to each other. And they know how to design interesting arenas and slowly introduce enemies and new variables as the game goes on. Building off what you know and the first time playing keeping you continually unsure of what to expect next. I think that's one of the big areas where RE4 really shines in and why it works, even though it's a game where you fight a ton of enemies, it's not like other games of the same breed as the encounters all have their own life and feel different from each other. Which is impressive, as RE4 is also longer than the usual game of its type. And this is backed with great atmosphere and satisfying gunplay (and of course, the encounters are actually fun and the design is on point) and fantastic replay value.
RE failed after RE4 because Shinji Mikami left Konami. But seriously RE4 is one of best games i have played. I wish what we get HD version of Dino Crisis too sometime...
When you preface a comment with "no offense", you're bound to offend someone. It's like saying, "I'm not a racist, but..." You're obviously going to say something racist or inflammatory there after.
I think Remake would be possible on Ps2. A console that could handle Shadow of the Colossus, Black and FFXII could handle that game, but Re0 would be awkward because of loading times.
Resident Evil 3 introduced a dodge mechanic and was more action-based than 2. Resident Evil 2 introduced more enemies on screen and was more action-based than Resident Evil 1 So why is Resident Evil 4, which introduced a new camera angle and was more action-based than 3 the one that broke the pattern of the whole series?
It's funny people hate on the controls of RE4 compared to other modern over the shoulder game but what they don't realize is the movement in RE4 is the exact same as the movement in RE1Remake. RE4 & RE7 showed you can change camera angle and it could still have that feeling.
This is one of the most in-depth reviews I've seen of a game in general. I only came here to find out if the new HD remake was worth it but instead I got a very detailed study of the game and its effect on the industry. You earned a new subscriber!
It's crazy to think that this game was so good that they couldn't make a proper sequel to it because they already uded every amazing ideas ! This game kinda reminds me of Metal Gear Solid minus the good plot. If Capcom ever get Kojima to work on a RE game, it would be so great !
Mikami is just a complete genius. That man can't make a bad game even if he tried to. TEW is arguably the best game I have experienced since the Playstation 2 era.
Von Steiner You 'hated' it? Really? You're denying yourself one hell of a time. Not saying you should love it necessarily, but it's a well made game, and if you keep an open mind whilst playing, I don't see how you could in fact hate it.
Von Steiner well if it's made by Mikami it doesn't have to be as goofy as RE4 gets sometimes. Besides, you were shown what you gonna get in previews. Did it not seem like a game which take itself seriously? I got exactly what I expected, even more. I would understand that people are dissapointed, because they didn't get 'the return of survival horror' as it was presented in trailers (I believe it was in trailers, I didn't see this kind of statement anywhere, so I wasn't expecting it to be true, I was expecting game directed by Mikami). I was waiting the game similar to RE4, but more complex and I got it. I didn't expect a good story, but I got that as well, so I'm happy. The only big problem is technical performance, I wish they chose Unreal Engine 3 instead. With this engine it's heavy on my computer and it takes a lot of space (something like 50gbs, maybe more) and I don't see how it's better visually than UE3. The rest is really good, can't wait for Evil Within 2
I agree. It's so ironic that the arguably best in the series turned the series into an action game with scary enemies instead of a horror game. RE4 is scary. Everything afterward really isn't.
On the tone switch of RE4, it seems like a way of making happier levels even happier and darker levels even darker. It's a very extreme contrast so I can understand a bit of a whiplash.
Tanker Chapter? I've never heard that term unless you're comparing it to MGS2. For me, the first section really ends once you enter the Castle, which I believe starts after Chapter 2-3.
I didn't notice the tone shift too much since I just played off the Salazar dialogues as residentevil silliness. It wasn't until that giant statue started the chain of QTEs that I couldn't stop laughing while mashing A. Come to think of it, I think I still managed to jump the falling bridge despite it being my first run that both scared and surprised me.
''Ammo is scarce'' lol not really. Even on pro difficulty I find myself happier when cash drops instead of ammo, since my inventory is full of it. Then again I play it safe and really efficient.
+Zovereign i doubt you didnt have ammo problems on your *first* playthrough. Unless you were using a walkthrough to know how to most efficiently deal with bosses, sub-bosses and ambushes that the game throws at you from time to time... or maybe you're just that much better than me :/
Benete Silva I watched a lets play for the parts I finished, and that taught me how to properly deal with stuff. I suppose that makes it a little dishonest. After that however, once you learn the basics it becomes a smooth but fun ride.
Zovereign indeed, once you know what you're doing its almost too easy. but i remember clearly how i was always low on ammo on my first playthrough. and it was great.
"why did so many great games come from 2004-2005?" well, there wernt very many technology limitations (aside from graphics) and developers put work into their games
Developers put in a LOT of work into their games, it's just shitty publishers that limit what they can do. Plus, gaming is WAY more expensive and time consuming than it ever has been. I'm honestly amazed that you have so many likes.
I think it's because there is more cookie cutter design across game development as a whole. Now that companies know what sells versus what doesn't they are a lot less likely to take risks. Also the notion that they don't work as hard now or that they didn't have technical limitations back then is utter nonsense, it's corporate meddling that gets in the way, not the dev's ambition.
RE4 was a masterpiece. Still one of my favorite games ever, and with good reason. I've completed it far, far too many times, and enjoyed it every step of the way.
8:36 I still fucking love how Ashley pumps her fist every time you get a nice shot off with the sniper rifle. Such a minor detail but it really adds some character to the action.
I've bought the game at least 10 times and beat it at least 30 times. just bought it again for pc and can't wait to play it again. what's your favorite part?
+SteelersRock-43 My favorite part was personally facing off against the Verdugo. It's a rare kind of boss where you're under constant pressure while also relying on remembering where every canister is so that you can take it down, my favorite boss in the game, with Krauser coming second. I also love it's design and the buildup of seeing it's perspective before it finds you. I've also beaten the game a lot. I basically only stopped playing because I beat Professional mode and felt too accomplished to come back.
+kylele23 my favorite part the castle or the bunker with regeneraters. I remember on the ps2 trying for weeks to beat professional to get the laser. It was my greatest accomplishment at the time. I miss being a little kid playing re4 all day.
Get the wii version you fell like a god mad with power.the wii remote is the ultimate control schim for this game.you do not waste 3 seconds to do precise long shots, now they are instant.
CynicalSheep It’s not like you’re limited to the Wii Remote. It’s compatible with Gamecube and Classic controllers. Still, who says you can’t try out the Wii Remote controls? They’re surprisingly engaging to use.
I love the PC version's mouse aiming. Set it to modern, crank the sensitivity up and you get the convenient feel of the Wiimote without a huge loss in challenge and tension. I LOVE the Wii version's controls but they just make things way too easy.
Really starting to feel nostalgic for the time when RE4 was new. When this video came out, the game was 9 years old. Now it's 16 years old. What the hell happened? 2015 feels just like yesterday! I guess I'll see you in a few years when a new wave of people find this and the game is 20 years old, or whatever.
It doesn't work 100% of the time, but they normally die instantly when you shoot them once while they are in the air. I've done it multiple times on Professional difficulty with the TMP, and they die from one shot 90% of the time.
Yes! The Regenerators and the Iron Maidens are some of the creepiest monsters ever made for a video game. Their design, way that they walk slowly towards you with death in their eyes, and that fucking noise that they make. It just combines into this creepy mishmash of nightmares. And you don't want to get close to those things. You just want to run, because you know it's dangerous. I've never heard of any other player or reviewer mention this creature. The only other monster than came close to the Regenerator was the Divider necromorph from Deadspace 1. That slow walk, and creepy design, along with the fact that trying to kill it only made things worse.
I don't remember much about RE4 since it has been years since I played it but, I can remember the regenerators moans extremely vividly. Fucking scary shit
I just beat the game recently after having not played it in years since my early years in highschool (about to graduate college now) and I was surprised by how well it holds up, in fact there's plenty of elements of it that put modern shooters to utter shame. For one, you aren't drowning in ammo and money like say in Bioshock or Dead Space, you're ALWAYS low and if you ever think you aren't, the next section will kick your ass and have you depleted in no time, you have to scramble around the place all the time for that just to get by but if you do get to a point where you're at a wall, the merchant is around every corner and you can get a Rocket Launcher that 1-shots damn near everything except for Krauser and the final boss. The level design was expertly crafted as well (for the most part) with a couple points where you see a seemingly unreachable treasure but feel damn good when you do get it or when you're bombarded with enemies there's often various spots you can protect yourself at, most notably in the village at the start where there's several houses to hide in or you can climb the tower and sit up there but not for long since they will throw moltovs at you. The constantly changing enemies and areas made it so I never once got bored since you'd have to change up your tactics regularly because of this as well. Hell, I'm tempted to go through it again just for the sake of it, it really was an amusement ride........but I need a break first because of those wretched QTEs. At certain points they work well like when the right hand of Salazar is messing with you before you fight him or with the lake monster, but they are far too abundant than they rightfully need to be (they even happen in cutscenes!) and most of the time you will straight-up die if you get them wrong and it's especially irritating how a lot of them come out of nowhere like with the boulders making it more stress-inducing than clever.
First 18+ rated game I ever played. I was 13 and the store guy had me call my mom to check if it was okay for me to buy it. Man, 13 year old me loved this game to death. Totally picking this up again soon.
1997-98 was a really good year for gaming as well. On another note, holy shit, that fucking Spanish. I don't know how fluent you are in Spanish, George, but the over-the-top expletives and unintelligible muttering echoing from the Ganados adds an unprecedented amount of more camp to this game. Also, someone should totally mod the Red9 to function like Eva's Mauser in MGS3. Leon'll kick the door down like Fox Mulder and sweep his Red9 across while simultaneously shouting one liners. That would be awesome.
Would love to hear and see what you have to say about the RE7 demo and the new direction they are now taking the franchise. I love it, but it IS proving somewhat controversial.
Mattroks101 Haha awesome. I wasn't sure if I was misinterpreting your statement or not. Thought I might be. You expected his normal level of genius, just not the opinions he exacted. I agree. He sold me on RE4 actually. I've never been into the series but my interest is sparked...
Wow. Excellent and thorough review. Learned a lot about the RE series and gaming in general. And I didn't realize how awesome those years were for gaming!
One thing I never see mentioning about RE4, is that it dropped the exploration completeley. In the old games you had to explore and figure out where to go next, while in re4 you basically only had one path 99% of the time.
Resident Evil 4 was the first RE game I ever finished, I've played the other before, but never finished any... After RE 4 I played all the old ones I could get my hands on! I twas quite a interesting experience the say the least; Being able to play the them newest entry and then play the old ones made me realize how much they improved and where they screwd up with RE4! by now the game is 16 years old and still is the best game from the new era of Resident Evil.
I believe i have never seen a review so deep, so well written and so aware of the real importance of a game in its series and in video game history itself. Congratulations, you just made the most the review i have ever seen.
i am of the firm belief that RE4 was a colossal fuck up of such epic proportions to the point that its a master piece kinda like how in squidward slammed a bunch of stone things at a art class and accidentally made a beautiful statue... it was not done on purpose which is why they have failed over and over again to make such a fantastic game
I don't get it. It added the open camera and introduced action elements while realizing the old zombie formula wasn't good enough and evolved the use of guns and enemies. Back then you either shot and knifed or ran past them, now you could shoot a leg and kick them all and more, giving a variety that was unseen in any other game by then
***** That's what made them great. They knew action was only a side dish and nothing more. People today hasn't learnt that action alone is a horrible genre without anything to hold it up and make it good. Tom & Jerry wouldn't had been fun if it was more on chase and crashing than set up, puns and gags. Starcraft wouldn't had been as celebrated if it was less strategy and more effects and big scale fights. Ori And The Blind Forest wouldn't had been as epic or beautiful if there were more segments or enemies and platforming with enemies
Gotta agree, RE4 is still an amazing game. You're also one of the first people I've seen say that the years 2004 and 2005 were some of the best years for games in a video. I have no proof but I imagine a bit of nostalgia is why so many cite the SNES and N64 years as gaming's best. They were good years for sure but the Gamecube era is when developers perfected 3D video games for most genres. It was the last generation of games before things got ridiculously generic and filled to the brim with publishers taking advantage of gamers in ever manner possible. I'd also add 2003 to that list for games like Wind Waker, Viewtiful Joe and Mario & Luigi/ Paper Mario 2. Also happy to see you put Splinter Cell Chaos Theory in your list of great games. Too bad the series took a nosedive with conviction and blacklist (and screw the critics that claimed Blacklist was a complex and rewarding stealth game. It was just a dull shooter with optional stealth tacked in that was embarrassingly simple).
Honestly I don't see RE5 and 6 taking themselves that much more serious than RE4 did. Also we have the REvelation series focussing on horror more and they seem to be taking themselves seriously... or not. I definately like the references. But fanservice is inevitable in these games at this point. I still like these newer games and I gladly replay them. But Resident Evil seems to try going back to the ruits. Next year we will get a Remaster PC port for RE0 and RE2 will be remade.
Did we play the same game!? in Re4 you had this obvious camp going on with Leon being this wisecracking 80's action hero and the sheer self-aware hamminess the villains espouse is unparalleled! In RE5 chris is this generic military dude with deadpan serious acting same deal with sheva, so RE5&6 definitely feel way more serious which is actually more faithful to the Remake but the story is just batshit levels of stupid at this point so it might as well make fun of itself now.
***** Leon has a sarcastic attitude because that is within his character. He is an agent and Ada is a spy. They both act like that. Chris is an soldier soldier. Of course he would be more serious. He has to. He is not Leon. That's like comparing Tony Stark to Steve Rogers. One character shruggs the desperate situation off like it's nothing special, while the other one takes it very seriously. Look at Jake in RE6. Does he take it seriously? Not at all. The first thing he worries about is the money. Ada is being Ada throughout the whole series. I'm pretty sure they will put in more sarcasm onto her character in the upcoming RE2 remake. Same with Leon. As for the villians, they are all different. Does Irving look like he is taking anything seriously? Are YOU supposed to take him seriously? Same with Excella. Krauser in RE4 was definately the serious kind of villian. He didn't have the same kind of attitude like Saddler or Salazar. You just have to look at what character you are talking about.
RE2 leon was not an 80's action hero,he was just some rookie cop trying to survive. *"Look at Jake in RE6. Does he take it seriously? Not at all"* He has superpowers of course he won't take anything seriously! and in case you didn't notice leon in Re6 is back to being a serious character. *"I'm pretty sure they will put in more sarcasm onto her character in the upcoming RE2 remake"* That would be one unfaithful remake then cus she was a serious character in RE2 and it goes against the serious tone the game is going for. Too many jokes and it will end up sounding like the voice acting of RE1. *" Does Irving look like he is taking anything seriously?"* Wesker&irvling are all camp but what about the dead serious supporting cast? in RE4 Leon even jokes around with ada, hunnigan, ashley and even luis(but then again luis is always joking around too). *"Krauser in RE4 was definately the serious kind of villian"* Not really, considering the movie its paying homage to is a cheesy 80's action flick.
***** *RE2 leon was not an 80's action hero,he was just some rookie cop trying to survive.* I know, but in Darkside Chronicles they altered his character a little and made him say some sarcastic remarks. I am pretty sure they will do that in the remake aswell. *He has superpowers of course he won't take anything seriously! and in case you didn't notice leon in Re6 is back to being a serious character.* What super powers? He is just genetically imune to every virus, but has no super human abilities. He's just a very skilled fighter. As for Leon, he was serious again because the situation he was in was more serious than before. He was framed for killing the PRESIDENT, who he knew personally and he actually DID kill the president. It was personal. And even then he wasn't going all serious the whole time. Leon to Jake: "Welcome to the club. You'll get used to it." or Leon to Simmons: "Back for more?" *That would be one unfaithful remake then cus she was a serious character in RE2 and it goes against the serious tone the game is going for.* She wasn't that serious. She was just playing for most of the time. She was already more like in RE4 when we saw her in REDC. *Too many jokes and it will end up sounding like the voice acting of RE1.* Some people apparently like the selfawareness and bad voice acting of the original. Also, RE2's voice acting is not gonna win any awards either. I also highly doubt they will go over the top with the jokes. Darkseid Chronicles had quite a lot of jokes and nobody was complaining. *Wesker&irvling are all camp but what about the dead serious supporting cast? in RE4 Leon even jokes around with ada, hunnigan, ashley and even luis(but then again luis is always joking around too).* That's Leon for ya. That's why people love him and consider him the best RE protagonist. *Not really, considering the movie its paying homage to is a cheesy 80's action flick.* Every fictional work is playing homage to something. Regardless, Krauser was much more serious than Saddler or Salazar. It's because he is that kind of character. He was the same in REDC too.
I'm pretty sure they're going to make REmake 2 in the same vein as REmake not like that rail shooter, after all they are making it based on the recent sales of REmake. *"but has no super human abilities"* He has the same matrix fighting moves of wesker and he's supposed to be his son or something. *"because the situation he was in was more serious than before"* He was supposed to be rescuing president's daughter and fighting villagers in Re4 that was and not serious enough for him!? its obvious RE4 didn't want to be serious from the get go no matter what the premise. Revelations 2&RE4 are the only 2 games in the series that are fully self-aware with a deliberate sense of irony.
this game stands out for me as the game that wiped the fucking floor back in 2005 , what shinji mikami did was just wonderful this game has an excellent level design , people saw this as a huge change since the camera angle was fixed behind u but it was genius everyone laughed about this , yet everyone uses it till this very day all Thanks to this game , I wish the series could've stopped here because what came after it was an abomination , dog shit sequels with 0 attention to what fans loved about 4 but they corrected it in the 7th one , and let's not forget the voice actors , Leon's voice actor is perfect although the dialogue is completely corny yet he still got the job done and the levels are back to back exciting , the boss battles are just amazing and this is why I love this game this game is totally a classic and it aged very well and it certainly is one of the greatest if not the best games out there.
Imo, there is a massive gorge in terms of respect between people who have well thought out opinions as to why something isnt good and others who simply join the bandwagon. You did a damn good job ellaborating what has happened to the series since Resi4 and it's significance. Also happy to see the PC port isnt balls like last time.
High Velocity Velociraptor I dunno. I think the action-oriented second half of RE4 was actually ruined by its darker aesthetic. All that ambiance and isolated feel doesn't translate well to a second act wrought with choppers, mini-guns and explosions. It made more sense in the hostile and savage environment of RE5, not 4.
***** RE5 was a mindless, lead-filled action game, from start to finish. It didn't present itself as anything else; from the trailers, to the locales, to the tone and the gameplay scenarios it was an action games first. RE4 wrapped itself in the atmosphere of survival horror for the first 2-3 hours of the game, and then snowballs into action-oriented set-pieces and scenarios...with action first, horror second. It presented itself as one thing first, and then cartwheels into something else entirely halfway through. RE4 isn't a bad game, but neither is RE5...and NEITHER of them qualify as survival-horror. But at least RE5 didn't spend time trying to be anything it wasn't...it was consistent, at least.
Couldn't agree more when you talk about 2004 and 2005 those years where so amazing in gaming. I'm still replaying alot of those games these days I never really stop replaying them there still so damn good but now I can play F.E.A.R. in VR which is awesome.
It all makes sense now, people who hate re4-6 hate it because they can't aim for crap and on re1-3 you just press one button looking in the direction of the zombies lmao
Wow. What a pleasant surprise. A review for one of my three favourite games. Thank you. I just like to comment about the "zombie" thing, because it's kinda ridiculous. RE4 has zombies in the original meaning, because before it basically meant "someone without will and control over himself". As far as I know today people understand the word "zombie" in the version Romero brought with his movies - a walking dead wishing to eat flesh. It's also funny that at the beginning of the game Leon comments on the corpse - "That is not a zombie". When it totally is, it's just not the type of zombie he's used to!
***** FFX was the last one I've cared about and they have certainly lessened the name over the years. But still I have more respect for FF at this point. That's how bad RE is. Though both series can still be enjoyed with the games from PS1.
FoundationsofPause Compared to that certain magic it used to have, it's lessened, but A Real Reborn and Type 0 are no slouches by any means. ARR is now one of the best MMO's of all time from the ashes of one of the worst. Can you think of any game series that's done something like that? I don't know if any series ever did that. If FFXV turns out to be amazing, it won't necessarily mean the series will have returned to the form it was, but it will still be a quality game.
Weird, It feels like im the only resident evil fan that both: loved the originals when i played em back in the day , AND loved RE4 (and to a lesser extent 5). Its a different forumla but it happens to be an amazing one IMHO. they lost me with RE6, but I'm looking forward to playing 7 and embracing another new formula for the series. Change is ok, its not always a conspiracy to dumb things down. also great review all around, really enjoyed hearing your analysis and perspective.
*Re6 did. Re5 was just a revamped RE4 with less horror in it and had superior controls. (Which is to be expected because it came out 5 years after RE4 did lol) Re6 on the other hand fucked everything up far worse than any other game in the series.
The one thing that bugs me and probably will for the rest of my life, is how RE5 is considered not scary, stupid and the end of RE, and somehow RE4 is TEH BEST GAEM EVAR!!1 It doesn't only get a free pass, it is seriously considered by many, one of the very best games of all time. Ironically, it's the short years after 2005 that video games began dying to me. The young people who started playing video games during the 6th generation, shaped the image of the industry as is it today: uninspired, dumb, repetitive and ultimately hollow. It's a good thing indies rose up, they carry the fire.
EscanorTheBrave are you suggesting re4's reputation and influence was something pernicious to gaming? lol gtfo. People felt underwhelmed by RE5. that's all. Did you find RE5 scary? The end of resident evil was RE6. That was the real nail in the coffin. That game alone exemplifies the confused mess the series has become. Is that re4's fault? maybe. like the review says,re4 did pretty much check all the boxes and so it made it hard for anything that came after to do anything new but don't use that to try to shit on RE4. It simply is a classic.
***** Putting your kind "gtfo" aside, I don't think RE4 was pernicious to gaming, it was pernicious to the RE series. I don't really mind, RE wasn't that good in the first place. What bothers me, is that RE4 is thought to be one of the very best games of all time. I just can't process that statement. RE4 killed the series but at the same time attracted a plethora of young gamers, just like the Halo series did. No I did not find RE5 scary, and I didn't find RE4 scary too. The thing is, like Benzaie said, considering the praise RE4 got, RE5 was the sequel fans ASKED FOR. RE5 was a true sequel to RE4 while RE4 was the true sequel of absolutely nothing. I can't agree more with you about RE6 though, that game and SH: Downpour are the worst games I have played in a long long time.
RE 4 was an amazing action game with great survival horror elements thrown in there. While it was a new direction, I blame RE's death on Shinji leaving after the PS2 realease
tdenzel101 While I adore the man's work, he left because he was a little bitch. Originally it was a GameCube exclusive, but Capcom wanted to expand the market and release it on the PS2. If they did that, Shinji said he'd chop his head off. They did it anyway and instead of that, he quit the company. Overreaction on his part, if you ask me.
Bruno Gonzaga I think there may be one reason that he didn't want the PS2 remake. I don't actually know the whole story, I'm just guessing, but it may have been because he foresaw where the industry was going. I mean if they kept it on Nintendo then Capcom wouldn't be so money hungry and instead would focus more on the quality of the game. Nintendo has had the reputation of releasing games that are mostly flawless. Most games that came out on Nintendo systems were very heavily reviewed to make sure that they would work. Nintendo is very aware of their technology and would thus, know not to over-step their boundaries. I'm trying to say that Shinji probably wanted to maintain the quality of RE by staying with a company that typically makes good quality hardware, for the games they release that is.
Casshern Sinz Maybe. But I still think it's over reacting. At the time, Sony released a lot of quality games, and the PS2 was the overall much more popular console. REmake was a commercial failure at it's time due to not being released on the PS2. It was a very understandable commercial move, after all, a company needs to make money and it has to learn from mistakes from it's past. REmake's target audience wasn't on GameCube, and RE4's wasn't too. It's true Capcom turned to shit after that, but I think it was a smart and good business decision to do at the time.
Bruno Gonzaga I'm not going to deny it was a good business decision, because that was the better decision because the Gamecube just wasn't selling that well. And yeah it was an overreaction but I try to be somewhat sympathetic. If the Gamecube was advertised better the switch to the PS2 may not have happened, or at least not as fast. Unfortunately, the quality immediately degraded in the PS2 version. Nothing major like mechanical flaws, but they removed the cinematics for the alternate costumes in RE4. It isn't something I lost sleep over but it was an immediate downgrade that Shinji ultimately saw coming....maybe. Idk much about Shinji. Anyway, I mostly agree with you, I could've just said that to begin with.
First of all, the remake of _Resident Evil_ didn't sell as expected because of that stupid Nintendo Gamecube/later Wii exclusivity (dumb consoles both, and previously RE belonged to PlayStation!). Although it's not perfect (as everything else made by humans), it's actually the best remake of a videogame I've ever seen. About RE4, I get insulted every time I say I didn't like it *at all*, and it was really a bad videogame even. Bad design in general, lame character development, dull story, extremely awful PC port, poor technical execution in general, ridiculous textures, utterly frustrating, repetitive, unnatural, counterproductive and useless quick time events (especially on PC)... Not only it isn't scary at all (well, it's more spooky than RE5 and RE6 for sure, but nothing to do with the first videogames...), but relies *heavily* on action. Mikami created it that way because of what happened to REmake, it seems. But when I play a horror game, I want it to be scary, *not action*!! For that there's like thousands of them already. I can understand some people may like it, and find it even enjoyable as I did in some very particular moments (playing better versions than the first PC port). But forme, RE4 isn't a good videogame by itself, but even if it was decent, it isn't a real _Resident Evil_ videogame. At all. RE5 at least is a good videogame, but it's just action, nothing to do with RE... RE6 is plain, stinking crap. RE4 was the first main videogame with the title _Resident Evil_ that wasn't actual survival horror, but action. And despite being so bad, it did well on the sales, and therefore we got RE5, RE6... Videogame industry is doing depressingly bad lately, but it's all consumer's fault. The majority don't seem to care about quality, or have even a decent taste. I think we should demand quality always, and don't buy anything just for the sake of it, if it's not what it should be, like *survival horror being horror and not action*...
KILLERGAMERGIRL It's OK if you liked it (I don't know why, but whatever...), but it definitely isn't a genuine _Resident Evil_ game... And it's the title that meant the beginning of the end. Capcom is making great remasters lately, and we'll see about RE2 remake, but for me RE actually died with RE3, or with Veronica if I'm generous...
Sergi Medina You're definitely the minority you know that right? lol most people loved the game and would claim it's the best game ever made which I think it is.
Rarely have I ever seen a game as rewarding as this one for learning its mechanics. I played through it like 30 times and once you figure out how to use the movement and knife to your advantage you will find yourself at the end of the game with an inventory to full to stuff anything else in. Abusing ladders and windowframes helps too though. Great vid as always!
Till this day the Gamecube version is still the best for RE4, though I don't care that much for the game saddly :(. It's a badly controlling survivor horror game that wants to be an action game with a body count that sits up there with FPS games. The way it controls has to do with RE4s troubled development. It was supposed to be like the remake of RE1 for the GC, but then Capcom wanted more of an action feel out it. So you got the action game, but it still controls like a classic Alone in the Dark game. Which was good... for '92 when developers were still experimenting with an emerging genre, but tank controls in 2005 ?
ripoutyourprejudice The 'tank controls' were intentional in the same way the delayed actions in the early Castlevania games were. They could've made the controls more fluid and responsive, which they did and renamed it Devil May Cry before starting on another RE4 from scratch.
Keeping the tank controls was for the better. It wasn't just another throwback to how the older RE titles controlled. Horror games should be oppressive, making you feel like you were actually in danger. That you can't reload while running or strafe while aiming in RE4 disempowered you and made facing groups of enemies or agile monsters so much more intimidating. You could argue that it's artificial difficulty but I would much prefer that to the controls in RE6 or Dead Space 3, where controls for fluid movement degenerated survival horror into another COD-fest.
For those who don't know, krauser is voiced by the same guy that voices Doug dimmadome, Ashley is voiced by the same person that voices Sandy cheeks, and Leon is the merchant Seriously, go to "behind the voice actors" and confirm for your self
RE4 is SOOOO overrated. I do think it's a very good game, but I seriously just don't get the unanimous gushing that people give it. I found the game to actually be easy and not very scary. Now to be fair there were some pretty spooky moments and creepy as hell music, but it fails to be completely frightening since your character is a damn action hero. The enemies that are supposed to scary, like the big guys with the wolverine claws and the regenerators, are unsettling at first, but the moment you're able to find their weak spots, they're complete pushovers, did anyone seriously get scared of the regenerators once you were able to find the thermal scope? I sure wasn't, you could kill one of them in a matter of seconds! It sure doesn't help make the game scary that there's so much ammo lying around, yeah you can run out of it if you're too trigger happy, but once you master the art of knifing a guy, than shooting him, none of the human enemies pose a threat anymore. People who whine about the tank controls in the older games do not understand the fact that their characters are SPECIAL FORCES PEOPLE. It isn't like Silent Hill where the protagonist doesn't know how to fight, in Resident evil you control characters who are trained soldiers, the only way make the game intense and frightening is subvert the players visibility by making the camera fixed and forcing the player to manually adjust where the character is going, RE4's 'fixing' of this supposed 'problem' is one of the main things that sucks all the scares out of the game. It's impossible for me to take this game seriously as a horror game, and it is COMPLETELY hypocritical in my opinion for bitching about RE5 not being scary and a total action fest when RE4 had done that long before.
By overrated, what ratings are you comparing to? RE4 may not look as great today, but in its time it was revolutionary. Polished gameplay, redefining the survival horror genre, QTE's, overall quality and meticulous design, gorgeous character models and graphics, the list goes on.
I don't care about the graphics, yes it's a very good game, one of the best action titles of the 6th generation, but one of the best games ever?? No. I'm comparing it to the insane amount of accolades that every gamer and his mother seem to award it, it's not that great. Since you arbitrarily mention the graphics, yes the effects and character models might look nice, but the environments are constant barrages of browns and grays, they are very unappealing to look at. RE4 was meant as an action game, but RE5, which played exactly the same, is somehow worse? Sorry, that doesn't compute, and don't try to bring up the argument with Sheva either, Ashley was FAR more annoying than Sheva, the amount of time you spend playing with Ashley is almost the entire length of RE5 itself. Story wise, RE4 was so retarded, nothing about it made sense, and on top of it all, it had almost NOTHING to do with resident evil, whether Resident Evil had a good story or not is entirely opinion based, but it's story was vast with lots of characters, RE4 was a side story that only affected future games in ONE plot related aspect, everything else, Krauser, the illuminados, unrelated to resident evil, if you take out Leon and Ada, it isn't a resident evil story.
fwwaller While RE4 is more action-oriented, I don't believe it was designed to be an action game. Shinji Mikami scrapped a prototype of RE4 saying that it was too action-oriented (the prototype later became Devil May Cry). While RE5 plays similarly to RE4, the design choices are what makes RE4 regarded as the better game. Ironically the dull-colored landscape that you cited as criticism for RE4 is what I think a component of one of RE4's strengths: atmosphere. The grimy colors accompanied by eerie music, angry waves of zombified enemies, and the revving of chainsaws feels far more oppressive and horror-like than the bright, sunny environment of RE5 ever will. Escort missions tarnish many great games, but RE4 handles it well by having Ashley conveniently kidnapped multiple times so you can have some time to be alone and give your senses a rest from her incessant nagging. That's what I call great pacing. Sheva is more useful than Ashley, but having an AI to fight with you takes away any fear or dread. Horror games should be oppressive, making you feel as if you were in danger. Ashley's vulnerability underscored the survival aspect of RE4; Sheva does the opposite in RE5. RE4's story is laughable at best, but story and writing was never a real concern for this series. BTW could you explain what you mean by "resident evil story?"
Correction: The prototype of RE4 that became Devil May Cry, while Shinji Mikami DID say one of the reasons for it being ditched was because of the heavy emphasis on action, his mean reason was that it had NOTHING to do with Resident Evil, a dude with a sword and guns fighting demons and supernatural monsters does not equal resident evil, a purely science fiction centered universe. A game CAN be frightening WHILE being interesting to look at as well, take the original PS1 resident evil games, the Remake and RE 0, those games had gorgeous pre rendered backgrounds brimming with cool art design that added a spooky unique flavor to each environment, Resident Evil 4 has 3 main visual themes, grimy ass poop brown covered medieval village, dimly lit medieval castle that is the most visually interesting setting in the game, but THEN it goes back to the griminess with the military base at the end, overwhelming you ONCE AGAIN with browns and grays, it's boring and ugly to look at and contrasts badly with the high quality character models and animations, at least in something like Silent Hill 2 and 3 the environments are detailed enough to excuse the muted sepia tone colors, RE4's grimy locations have many pixelated areas made all more noticeable by the dull color palette. Only about 20% of RE5 was is sunny locations, everywhere else was actually pretty varied, underground cave ruins, giant shipyards, underground laboratories, RE5 actually had some pretty sweet locations. I'll admit that it is refreshing to not have to deal with Ashely's BS NEARLY as much as you could have, but I feel that the game was WAY too long, by about halfway through the military base part of the game, I felt the game FAR outstayed it's welcome, I love long games, but some parts in the 3rd act of RE4 just felt like the game was overloading you with filler, again, more noticeable due to the boring settings. Here's the problem, I NEVER FELT LIKE I WAS IN DANGER IN RE4. Yeah Leon is SO vulnerable that he performs matrix like stunts off of walls to avoid lasers, is able to shoot a flying axe out of the sky, is equipped with every single gun known to mankind, and can throw down with a dude who is like 4 times more muscular than he is, EVEN WHEN THAT DUDE IS GIVEN SUPERHUMAN STRENGTH AND SPEED BY THE PARASITE. RE4 is not scary, it never was, never will be, it may try to scare you, all the enemies may look intimidating, but they won't look that way when you plow through them all with you're SMGs, hand cannons, and tommy guns. I thought that last part was self explanatory, it's pretty simple, a resident evil story, one that continues the arcs of some of the established characters,(Chris, Leon, Claire, Barry,) and progresses the story, showing what happens in the aftermath of Umbrella's fall. The game wasn't about that, it was just about some imperious religious group in Europe that's unearthed a prehistoric parasite that they want to use to rule the world, the only connection we're given to Umbrella is Ada, there's a cutscene where Leon says she's working with Wesker, but then, IT'S NEVER BROUGHT UP AGAIN. Yeah the separate ways campaign reintroduces Wesker and does a better job at connecting the plot of RE4 with the overall plot of the franchise, but that's a SIDESTORY, not part of the actual main course. RE5 was a true sequel, following up on the stories of established characters and giving some resolution to the story lines of previous games. THAT'S what I mean by resident evil story.
Yeah, completely agree on this. Especially on that point about combat and level design being mixed. It's a lesson that the following games in the series remembered for their Mercenaries modes, but not their main campaigns while never giving you enough time to just play w/out a new event occurring.
I finally played RE4 back in 2014, (Wii version) and I unabashedly adored every second of it! Its crazy how packed this game was with content even after beating the main game. I've played through it a ridiculous amount of times since then. Very deserving of all the praise its gotten!
The mouse controls felt alot better than control stick. Using the keyboard for movement I thought were fine. The only problem I had was using the keyboard for QTEs. You had to use the Left and Right button on the mouse or X and C on the keyboard. I picked up my Xbox controller for that.

Bravo! :)
same here, love the editing and the sitcom stuff, seinfeld clip made me suscribe.

John Oliver
Oh, I completely agree with you.
John Oliver What 5 and 6 should have kept was the inventory. Oh, the glorious attache case! That thing is OCD paradise!
I played RE4 for the first time back in 2014, and I was very impressed how addicting it is, and also, how masterfully the level design is. I cannot deny it. This game is one of the best Horror/Third Person Shooter's I've ever played. Simply a masterpiece...
Agreed. Still... is one of the best games ever made. given a few seconds to think about it, only behind The Last of Us.
+Mickael Mc I think RE4 is better than the last of us...just my opinion
Peter Lyons Agreed!
Peter Lyons tbh, when I played The Last of Us, it reminded me of RE4 which was my favorite game up until I played TLoU all the way through.
+Mickael Mc I liked the last of us, I just preferred the characters and setting of RE4. Not to mention, Re4 had the merchant
Resident Evil 4 were roundhouse kick are more deadly than bullets
***** No, it's "were". "we're" is short for "we are".
***** Were is the past from be, as in "you were here yesterday". "Where" is a preposition of location, as in "where are you?". For this example the correct form would be: "Resident Evil 4, where roundhouse kicks are deadlier than bullets".

We ARE roundhouse kick.
Yes, you wrote that. I'm just sensing that you doubt the clear fact presented by Vshalak that we, all of us, are roundhouse kick.
I'm just joking about. Good day.
no its the suplex
My favorite game of all time. it's not perfect (no game is perfect) but it’s pretty damn close.
Soul Calibur is perfect.
Resident Evil 4's greatest problem: it was TOO good.
Dead Space better. Even The Evil Within is superior in a number of ways.
Ya Dead Space is way better than RE4. I'm a RE fanboy as well.
Dead Space did the balacing act that RE4 was able to do... for only half a game.
Horror & Action.

Only 22 times??
I love pie
four times? huh must be a master pie!
I literally fell asleep during that Ada Wong helicopter scene from RE6. The noise is so consistent, you're so far away from the action, and the gameplay requires so little thought that I just passed right out for the first and possibly last time ever while playing a video game.
Played RE4 in my easy bake oven. You should try it, it runs at 60 frames with 1080p visuals. The controls are hard to get used to, but they work.
Uuh... hard to get used to? You mean like 2 whole mintes?
RAZKEN Bullshit. Nobody's *that* skillful.
RE4 cool Leon is nice, but I like RE2 nerd Leon so much more.

that moment when you shit your pants lol what are you 6 ?
oh... well sorry i guess :/
***** wat, now you aren't making any sense
unpopular opinion: RE5, espcially in co-op was great fun
I think all the REs can be considered "fun". 6 I could only play once (in coop), never went back. RE5 I played a bunch of times (thanks to coop) and 4 on gamecube was cool imo. But then again I belong to those people who missed RE1/2/3 when they originally released. 1 and 0 HD IMO are waaaay better than 4 5 or 6. can't wait for the 2 remaster to finally get to play that.
I completely agree. I remember playing co-op with my brother (when i was 5, and it didnt give me nightmares...)
Both Resident Evil 5 and Resident Evil 6 are great and very fun games and people only hate on them because they are not trying to be scary horror games.
Resident evil 5 was a great game if it was it's own thing. It just kinda pissed fans off how they slowly went from horror to twitchy action. I personally like the slow sluggish controls and the feeling that something behind me is going to grab me.
only in Co-op but yeah, it was fun as hell!
Super Bunnyhop
You have no idea how happy I am that you replied and that you considered my observation worthy!

While yes, that is most likely the cause of Resident Evil's downfall, my point is that the direction that Resident Evil 4 took the series was one that was on the surface quite different to the previous games, but it still very much honours them.
That's why Resident Evil 4 killed the series.
no bro re6 did kill resident evil franchise . like cod ghost killed call of duty
How is there only 74k subs? This is better than most of the 1mil+ game reviews filled with silly craps.
RE failed after RE4 because Shinji Mikami left Konami. But seriously RE4 is one of best games i have played. I wish what we get HD version of Dino Crisis too sometime...
ChaosPrototypeIX RE4 is a masterpiece.
But I don't think RE5 is bad.
ChaosPrototypeIX Mikami left Capcom. Hideo Kojima is soon to depart Konami when MGS5 wraps up.
ChaosPrototypeIX "Konami"
When you preface a comment with "no offense", you're bound to offend someone.
It's like saying, "I'm not a racist, but..."
You're obviously going to say something racist or inflammatory there after.
+ChaosPrototypeIX Shinji Mikami made The Evil Within and people don't like it.
Remake and Zero were a "comercial failure" because it was released on the wrong console... Just that.
I think Remake would be possible on Ps2. A console that could handle Shadow of the Colossus, Black and FFXII could handle that game, but Re0 would be awkward because of loading times.
Resident Evil 3 introduced a dodge mechanic and was more action-based than 2.
Resident Evil 2 introduced more enemies on screen and was more action-based than Resident Evil 1
So why is Resident Evil 4, which introduced a new camera angle and was more action-based than 3 the one that broke the pattern of the whole series?
FinetalPies This comment is so smart
It's funny people hate on the controls of RE4 compared to other modern over the shoulder game but what they don't realize is the movement in RE4 is the exact same as the movement in RE1Remake. RE4 & RE7 showed you can change camera angle and it could still have that feeling.
Yeah. 04/05 was like the 98/99 of the Aughts :D
Hmm. What do you think the 98/99 of the 2010's will be?
Super Bunnyhop Well, one can only hope it's yet to come.
I'm venturing 2016/17
InnerPartisan 98,04,10,?16? I agree it seems like every 6 years is when it comes together
2017 has answered that
This is one of the most in-depth reviews I've seen of a game in general. I only came here to find out if the new HD remake was worth it but instead I got a very detailed study of the game and its effect on the industry. You earned a new subscriber!
RE4 is the only game that actually lived up to the insane amount of hype I had for
It's crazy to think that this game was so good that they couldn't make a proper sequel to it because they already uded every amazing ideas !
This game kinda reminds me of Metal Gear Solid minus the good plot.
If Capcom ever get Kojima to work on a RE game, it would be so great !
Fun fact, the person that voices Krauser is also the same voice actor that voices Doug Dimmadome from fairly odd parents.
I love Evil Within the similar way I love RE4 - meaning a whole freaking lot. Those two games are brilliant. Thank you, Shinji senpai
Mikami is just a complete genius. That man can't make a bad game even if he tried to.
TEW is arguably the best game I have experienced since the Playstation 2 era.
Kanny Boy i said the same thing until the witcher 3
AydarBMSTU I hated the evil within. It took itself way too seriously to be enjoyable.
Von Steiner You 'hated' it? Really? You're denying yourself one hell of a time. Not saying you should love it necessarily, but it's a well made game, and if you keep an open mind whilst playing, I don't see how you could in fact hate it.
Von Steiner
well if it's made by Mikami it doesn't have to be as goofy as RE4 gets sometimes.
Up to what act-chapter would be considered the Tanker chapter of RE4?
Tanker Chapter? I've never heard that term unless you're comparing it to MGS2. For me, the first section really ends once you enter the Castle, which I believe starts after Chapter 2-3.
Will that be the turning point in terms of tone or gameplay?
Kind of both. The Castle Sections tend to demand more movement and aggressive tactics while also being goofier in general.
Same
+Zovereign I was gonna say the same. Fuckin "Ganados" or whatever they're called are like fuckin pinhatas
+Zovereign
i doubt you didnt have ammo problems on your *first* playthrough.
So then why aren't there great games coming out nowadays?
because, like I said, developers put work into their games back then, but not anymore.
Developers put in a LOT of work into their games, it's just shitty publishers that limit what they can do.
Plus, gaming is WAY more expensive and time consuming than it ever has been. I'm honestly amazed that you have so many likes.
there is great games these days. some of the best games i've played ever have come in the past few years.
I subscribed to your channel because of this amazing review.. Good job
Saucy Yeah man . And I had noticed that after 5-6 walkthroughs
You only played this four times?
I stopped counting how many times I played through this...
Same.^^
I've bought the game at least 10 times and beat it at least 30 times. just bought it again for pc and can't wait to play it again. what's your favorite part?
Personally play the game every year or two since it's been out, and I'm in love with the Castle part.
Palpatine as a kid, but still looking 1004 years old.
"this isn't a review... this is terrorism!"
GREAT review and you shed a lot of light on why I believe the REs after 4 were ridiculous, but I couldn't put my finger on why.
I just can't imagine my life without Resident Evil 4....
Get the wii version you fell like a god mad with power.the wii remote is the ultimate control schim for this game.you do not waste 3 seconds to do precise long shots, now they are instant.
Ciprian Mogosanu i have the wii version and it's amazing, you can chain headshots like a god
Ciprian Mogosanu I like playing with a controller. I enjoy a good challenge.
I forget everything when a regenerator shows up.
God I love this game. I love the merchant, I love the campiness, I love the weapon design.
And i really really loves that you can peek at Ashley Panties 😂 using sniper scope from far 😗.. God bless The creator 😜
Don't forget the inventory system
Really starting to feel nostalgic for the time when RE4 was new. When this video came out, the game was 9 years old. Now it's 16 years old. What the hell happened? 2015 feels just like yesterday! I guess I'll see you in a few years when a new wave of people find this and the game is 20 years old, or whatever.
If you are calling Novistadors "easy enemies," then you must be a Resident Evil master.
Just shotgun their asses lol
Jotegen They are. You just gotta know where they are. Only takes a single rifle shot to kill them and a bullet in the air.
Galaxeus yeah one shot. If you are playing on easy mode that would be the case.
I cut away just before their reveal. Don't wanna spoil their appearance for new players ;D
I don't remember much about RE4 since it has been years since I played it but, I can remember the regenerators moans extremely vividly. Fucking scary shit
Too bad they're too brief&easy.
I really hope you do a review of the excellent RESIDENT EVIL 4 REMAKE
@@vehtty_ Lol
Hail the remake!
First 18+ rated game I ever played. I was 13 and the store guy had me call my mom to check if it was okay for me to buy it.
Man, 13 year old me loved this game to death. Totally picking this up again soon.
18+? This game is rated 15+ in the UK
MrMichcio22 Yup. Truly a responsible store clerk.
AnimatorDemon In sweden, Rated 18 by PEGI.
The Evil Within--made by Shinji Mikami, the creator of Resident Evil--trailer played for this video.
Well played Bethesda, well played.
Right around 1:40 I was like..."Is he gonna say that RE4 birthed Gears of War?" and then 2:00 happen. Great stuff!
Would love to hear and see what you have to say about the RE7 demo and the new direction they are now taking the franchise. I love it, but it IS proving somewhat controversial.
I'm glad that I found your channel. I share your opinions about the classic RE games.
Wow. I wasn't expecting this from you. Fantastic.
Evidently you don't watch much Super Bunnyhop. He's one of if not the best reviewer around.
Quentin Davis Buddy I've been watching him from the start. I love this guys work.
Mattroks101 Haha awesome. I wasn't sure if I was misinterpreting your statement or not. Thought I might be.
You expected his normal level of genius, just not the opinions he exacted. I agree. He sold me on RE4 actually. I've never been into the series but my interest is sparked...
Quentin Davis No I just wasn't expecting him to cover this game is all.
Mattroks101 He's a bit old school.
Wow. Excellent and thorough review. Learned a lot about the RE series and gaming in general. And I didn't realize how awesome those years were for gaming!
squeaky voiced midget napoleon was the best
At first he was supposed to be a child but that didn't fly well with him being a villain and stuff
One thing I never see mentioning about RE4, is that it dropped the exploration completeley. In the old games you had to explore and figure out where to go next, while in re4 you basically only had one path 99% of the time.
But how come no one ever talks about Dino Crisis 2?
its one of those "cult classic" things not many people played but us who did love it
Dino Crisis 1 is better, more survival and puzzle. DC2 was too much action.
No thanks, Bro!
+Daniel Higashikata Your right hand comes off?
+SilentTree get him!!
Sadler, you're small-time!
Can you elaborate on why you think it failed to the degree that you say it did?
it was iterative prototyping, and it resulted in Haunting Grounds and more importantly Devil May Cry.
Could have been worse IMO
I don't get it. It added the open camera and introduced action elements while realizing the old zombie formula wasn't good enough and evolved the use of guns and enemies. Back then you either shot and knifed or ran past them, now you could shoot a leg and kick them all and more, giving a variety that was unseen in any other game by then
@magnusm4 the point of the old games wasn't action shooting in the first place!
*****
That's what made them great.
*****
Leon has a sarcastic attitude because that is within his character.
Not at all"*
He has superpowers of course he won't take anything seriously! and in case you didn't notice leon in Re6 is back to being a serious character.
*"I'm pretty sure they will put in more sarcasm onto her character in the upcoming RE2 remake"*
That would be one unfaithful remake then cus she was a serious character in RE2 and it goes against the serious tone the game is going for.
Too many jokes and it will end up sounding like the voice acting of RE1.
*" Does Irving look like he is taking anything seriously?"*
Wesker&irvling are all camp but what about the dead serious supporting cast? in RE4 Leon even jokes around with ada, hunnigan, ashley and even luis(but then again luis is always joking around too).
*"Krauser in RE4 was definately the serious kind of villian"*
Not really, considering the movie its paying homage to is a cheesy 80's action flick.
*****
*RE2 leon was not an 80's action hero,he was just some rookie cop trying to survive.*
I know, but in Darkside Chronicles they altered his character a little and made him say some sarcastic remarks. I am pretty sure they will do that in the remake aswell.
*He has superpowers of course he won't take anything seriously! and in case you didn't notice leon in Re6 is back to being a serious character.*
What super powers? He is just genetically imune to every virus, but has no super human abilities. He's just a very skilled fighter.
As for Leon, he was serious again because the situation he was in was more serious than before. He was framed for killing the PRESIDENT, who he knew personally and he actually DID kill the president. It was personal. And even then he wasn't going all serious the whole time. Leon to Jake: "Welcome to the club. You'll get used to it." or Leon to Simmons: "Back for more?"
*That would be one unfaithful remake then cus she was a serious character in RE2 and it goes against the serious tone the game is going for.*
She wasn't that serious. She was just playing for most of the time. She was already more like in RE4 when we saw her in REDC.
*Too many jokes and it will end up sounding like the voice acting of RE1.*
Some people apparently like the selfawareness and bad voice acting of the original. Also, RE2's voice acting is not gonna win any awards either. I also highly doubt they will go over the top with the jokes. Darkseid Chronicles had quite a lot of jokes and nobody was complaining.
*Wesker&irvling are all camp but what about the dead serious supporting cast? in RE4 Leon even jokes around with ada, hunnigan, ashley and even luis(but then again luis is always joking around too).*
That's Leon for ya. That's why people love him and consider him the best RE protagonist.
*Not really, considering the movie its paying homage to is a cheesy 80's action flick.*
Every fictional work is playing homage to something.
*"but has no super human abilities"*
He has the same matrix fighting moves of wesker and he's supposed to be his son or something.
*"because the situation he was in was more serious than before"*
He was supposed to be rescuing president's daughter and fighting villagers in Re4 that was and not serious enough for him!? its obvious RE4 didn't want to be serious from the get go no matter what the premise.
Revelations 2&RE4 are the only 2 games in the series that are fully self-aware with a deliberate sense of irony.
From 2 years in the future I can say Resident Evil is back and has stayed true to its roots
this game stands out for me as the game that wiped the fucking floor back in 2005 , what shinji mikami did was just wonderful this game has an excellent level design , people saw this as a huge change since the camera angle was fixed behind u but it was genius everyone laughed about this , yet everyone uses it till this very day all Thanks to this game , I wish the series could've stopped here because what came after it was an abomination , dog shit sequels with 0 attention to what fans loved about 4 but they corrected it in the 7th one , and let's not forget the voice actors , Leon's voice actor is perfect although the dialogue is completely corny yet he still got the job done and the levels are back to back exciting , the boss battles are just amazing and this is why I love this game this game is totally a classic and it aged very well and it certainly is one of the greatest if not the best games out there.
Congrats on begin linked on Escapist article.
Oh snap, where!?
Super Bunnyhop "Why I hated Resident Evil 4"
on the "fondly remembered" hyperlink.
First video that I watch in this channel, and what a first impression, damn! Really liked the review, dude. Kudos : )
The second half of RE4 is essentially what RE5 is.
Yeah but to me the second half of RE4 was much better (than RE5) because of RE4s lighting and art style. RE5 looked so white washed and bright.
Am i the only one who loves every single part of resident evil 4?!
Jack Cline I like RE4 fine. The only thing I didn't like was the Ada Wong campaign.
Couldn't agree more when you talk about 2004 and 2005 those years where so amazing in gaming. I'm still replaying alot of those games these days I never really stop replaying them there still so damn good but now I can play F.E.A.R. in VR which is awesome.
the video is too dark :(
George's videos are like wine, the older they are , the more delightful is to revisit
George I love your videos! Great, great stuff! Can you do a few on Silent Hill 1-2-3? Pretty please? Please? I'll send you my kitten if you do :O
Man, I'm excited for the remake! Hope to hear your thoughts on it! Have you played the fan-made HD remaster?
It all makes sense now, people who hate re4-6 hate it because they can't aim for crap and on re1-3 you just press one button looking in the direction of the zombies lmao
also re5&6 are garbage games
No. It's dead. Can't think of a more failed series at this moment.
Final Fantasy?
***** No, god no.
If FFXV turns out to be amazing, it won't necessarily mean the series will have returned to the form it was, but it will still be a quality game.
oh fuck off, all 3 ff13 games rocked suck it
Weird, It feels like im the only resident evil fan that both: loved the originals when i played em back in the day , AND loved RE4 (and to a lesser extent 5).
Same boat, to me the best Resident evil games are 4, 1 and 7(in that order), but I didn't like 5 or 6 at all.
Resident Evil 5 killed RE(If you can say killed, re7 is already coming and it looks great). Not 4.
*Re6 did.
Re5 was just a revamped RE4 with less horror in it and had superior controls. (Which is to be expected because it came out 5 years after RE4 did lol)
Re6 on the other hand fucked everything up far worse than any other game in the series.
ScootsNB except five screw up a few of those controls
Thank you for putting words on how I felt between resident evil 4 and its sequels !
EscanorTheBrave So is that Assassin's Creed profile pic supposed to be satirical?
SilentTree
Take a closer look. ;)
EscanorTheBrave
i love it
EscanorTheBrave are you suggesting re4's reputation and influence was something pernicious to gaming?
*****
Putting your kind "gtfo" aside, I don't think RE4 was pernicious to gaming, it was pernicious to the RE series.
This "review" is a subtle and hilarious commentary of the other "reviews" I have seen for this version of the game. Well done.
I debate that RE 4 killed Resident Evil thing. "Evil Within" proves that this style has plenty of potential for great horror.
This is the first time I've seen someone bring up Killswitch in an RE4 retrospective and I can't believe it's taken this long to find.
Yes! My thoughts exactly!
Louis Ramirez
Thank you. :)
+Sergi Medina Resident Evil 4 is one of my favorite games of all time...:p
KILLERGAMERGIRL
It's OK if you liked it (I don't know why, but whatever...), but it definitely isn't a genuine _Resident Evil_ game...
Maybe I should've said the best version I played, never owned a Wii.
Galaith100 I hate the Wii's guts. Really. But the way it handles this game's controls is buttery goddamn smooth. It's perfect.
Indeed, the HD Steam version looks great, but I dont know, there is something about the GC version...
ripoutyourprejudice The 'tank controls' were intentional in the same way the delayed actions in the early Castlevania games were.
For those who don't know, krauser is voiced by the same guy that voices Doug dimmadome, Ashley is voiced by the same person that voices Sandy cheeks, and Leon is the merchant
Seriously, go to "behind the voice actors" and confirm for your self
It's impossible for me to take this game seriously as a horror game, and it is COMPLETELY hypocritical in my opinion for bitching about RE5 not being scary and a total action fest when RE4 had done that long before.
tl;dr but RE4 was meant as an action game. RE5 was a bad action game.
Thanks again for this insightful review! Your reviews make me always want to play the game.
Yeah, completely agree on this. Especially on that point about combat and level design being mixed. It's a lesson that the following games in the series remembered for their Mercenaries modes, but not their main campaigns while never giving you enough time to just play w/out a new event occurring.
This is one of the most beautiful reviews i've ever seen!
Another excellent and balanced video. This is fast becoming my favorite channel.
5:55 floating pickaxe
Also your re4 footage is SO DARK. Great review, but dang. Had to put my brightness on 100 for this.
I finally played RE4 back in 2014, (Wii version) and I unabashedly adored every second of it! Its crazy how packed this game was with content even after beating the main game. I've played through it a ridiculous amount of times since then. Very deserving of all the praise its gotten!
I actually forgot how hilarious the cheesy lines were and how great the second half is.
Me too and I played through it like 4 to 5 times
The mouse controls felt alot better than control stick. Using the keyboard for movement I thought were fine. The only problem I had was using the keyboard for QTEs. You had to use the Left and Right button on the mouse or X and C on the keyboard. I picked up my Xbox controller for that.
I still find this game scary as I did playing it when I was 13, and this series will always have a place in my heart.
