I never understood why they gave him 2 names in one title.
Other snakes or characters have double names. Like Saladin. Or even their real names.
But never see Big Boss Naked Snake
      Or Raiden Ripper
      Or Grey “Ninja” Fox
I just wish though separated the names.

The best part of Metal Gear 1 is during the escape/self-destruct sequence if you smoke cigarettes you get more time to escape.
That has to be the most illogical thing in the whole series.

I found a way to beat Metal Gear if you lose a star in the Dirty Duck boss. If you have maximum ammo for C4 and don't die or pick up any more C4, you will keep all 16 of your bombs. It's a sort of glitch, if you lose a star, it won't automatically cause you to lose health/ammo, unless you pick up more or you die and your ammo resets.
The first time I played MG1 I ended up beating it with 2 stars. But I recommend playing it safe and saving before the fight.

  • @Nitroxity
    @Nitroxity 8 лет назад +24

The most interesting thing about Metal Gear's stealth gameplay, in my opinion, is that the main reason for it was because the MSX computer couldn't handle fast paced Contra-esque gameplay without it being incredibly choppy, so they used stealth as a work-around. Very ingenious!

Metal Gear Solid is a reboot to the series. It combined story, items and concepts from Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2 to receeate the franchise. Kojima stated this in an interview. I think they should definitely get played by fans of the series, but they will have many elements people who played Metal Gear Solid will have deja vu about.

Been a Metal Gear fan since 1987 and I absolutely loved this review. Just one note - back in 1987, the MSX2 wasn't particularly "outdated"; it's just that, being a 'home computer', gaming wasn't its primary focus. For the time, the graphical capacities were quite dandy, if we'd excuse the lack of hardware supported vertical scrolling (which is something you would want in a computer that's dedicated to gaming).

There's Sega's 005 stealth arcade game and The Great Escape for the ZX Spectrum (and later for other platforms). I could also mention the top-down sneak game Castle Wolfenstein but technically it's possible to just shoot your way through it.

I hate when people talk about Metal Gear series, they seem to forget this and MG2: Solid Snake, and it is really fucking sad and stupid. MG2: Solid Snake could almost be as good, maybe even better than MGS1, yet ignorant fans say it is the best game of the series and original (even though it copied MG2). This and MG2 are probably my favorite 8bit games.

I never played through them, but I love watching my friend play through them. I played through the MGS series, but I don't hate or exclude Metal Gear. That's why I always refer to the franchise itself as Metal Gear, unless I'm specifically talking about MGS.

    • @ericrhodes5174
      @ericrhodes5174 9 лет назад

In terms of gameplay MG1 is probably the most purely entertaining in the series. Sure, there is no story. THE GAME WAS MADE IN 1987! WTF do you expect?! Back in those days it was more about PLAYING the games instead of watching them (MGS4). All the story you needed was in the manual. It seems like Kojima is ashamed of the first two games and keeps making retcons to cover up his perceived mistakes. Notice after MGS1 the events of MG1 and 2 are never mentioned, despite them being defining moments in Snake's character arc. He even retconned the event of Big Boss' death. In MGS1 Snake said Big Boss revealed to him that he was his father in his dying moments in MG2 but in the actual game, Big Boss simply swore revenge before dying. There was no "I am your father" moment. These days, Kojima seems obsessed with fleshing out Big Boss' past instead of giving fans what they really wanted, more adventures with Solid Snake! From the very beginning, Big Boss was hailed as a legendary war hero but the circumstances about how he established this reputation was unclear. This actually was for the best as it made Big Boss seem like a larger than life figure and a perfect adversary for the young Solid Snake. But in Snake Eater they fubbed it. They portrayed Big Boss as vulnerable and at the end he even sheds tears. This weakened his character. I wish Kojima would stop all this Big Boss shit. If it continues, the first two games will be retconned out of existence.

An aspect I wish you highlighted about the twist is how it contextualize everything he's said to Snake up to that point. Deliberately delaying advice or directly sending Snake in to traps. When you first enter the last set of rooms he tells you to go left where it's a room with nothing but a pit trap. How if you went to the gas room he only calls you and warns you when you're most likely already taking damage. It's a game actively trying to sabotage you with faux advice. Making your only reliable source of information the hostages you save along the way.

I bought this game from my first paper route money. In fact, the paper route was a means to acquire this very cartridge.
For the record, in my memory this was the most awesome game of the 80s in the history of all time. That's how good it was..
Finding goggles to see IR lasers? Hell Yeah!

Snake's revenge was actually the first metal gear I played. I recognize that it's not considered a true metal gear and I get it. I mean I was like 10 when I played it so despite not having played it in a long time I feel certain that stealth was not the biggest concern in Snake's Revenge.
But on the same coin I was 10 and actually had the patience (and game genie codes) to get all the way to the final boss. 10 year old kids aren't typically known for their patience and if the game was "no good" I doubt I'd have made it half way through.
I've heard that even Kojima said something like "It's not a bad game, it's just not really a metal gear game"
And that's how I feel about it. It was just more action and way less stealth. But that doesn't make it crap. I remember having loads of fun.
    ...
Until the end where you travel through a grid maze, c4ing walls till you get to METAL GEAR, blow that up and trigger a self destruct sequence and have to remember your way out.... f*** that game.

None of the stuff in the US manual is in game. It's still Big Boss and such. Except that Shotmaker is Shootgunner, the improvement that makes it all worth it.

I do believe the difficulty getting easier as the game goes along gets immediately addressed by difficulty settings such as "HARD". IN this case u have 2/2 Rations Max capacity and also "EXTREME" where in spite of ur health BAR increasing, the damage you took during any boss fight is not restored to you. Also, you only have 1/1 Ration throughout the entire experience of the game.
Secondly, I've tried the cardboard box trick and it doesn't work all the time especially on the higher difficulties. Not to mention the LACK of RADAR on both HARD and EXTREME difficulties.

For people getting into the series, play them in order of release, NOT CHRONOLOGICAL ORDER! If you can deal with aged gameplay, trying playing Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2 first. If you don't want to play them, watch a playthrough online, the games are only 2 hours long each. And worth it for understanding the story.
Then play MGS1 if you can deal with aged gameplay. If you don't play it, you MUST watch a playthrough, everything else in the series builds off from here. You miss MGS1, you will have a hard time seeing references and what's going on.
Then MGS2, hardest story to understand, but also very important. There are Wiki's out there and forums (Reddit has a great subreddit and community) that will answer any questions you have.
Then MGS3. Many people's favorite in the franchise. Aged pretty well if you play the Subsistence version, which is the version included in the HD Collection.
Then MGS4. I loved the game. Have very very long cutscenes, but they are very well done. Just get the popcorn ready.
Then MGS Peace Walker. If you plan on playing MGS 5, this is a very important game as it takes place just before MGS5. It's quite different than the rest of the series as you build Mother Base and recruit soilders.
Then Metal Gear Rising: Revengence. The most different in the franchise, not a stealth game but a very good action game.
And if all those games are not enough for you. Metal Gear Portable Ops is canon. It is the weakest in the series of games that are canon. But MG fans should at least try and play or watch it. The controls aren't the best, but it's not a terrible game, just not great. It takes place in between MGS3 and Peace Walker. If you do play it, I recommend anytime after MGS3, preferably just before Peace Walker as it does have a couple minor references. You don't have to play it, but at a least read a Wiki that describes the story of the game before MGS5.

12:08 They really didn't know any better at the time. Not that it couldn't be forseen, but the decision tree checking for unwinnable states was just not...a primary priority I guess you could say. There were lots of games around that era that were like that...ask any kid from that time about playing point and click adventure games (ESPECIALLY SIERRA GAMES) about missing some knicknack from a table somewhere in the first five minutes in and then it becoming important a number of hours later towards the end game.
Yes, I'm still bitter about my childhood playing sierra games on my first computer...

So… story clogged up the discs, eh?
I have nothing against massive stories, but i wonder, if we returned to the brevity of games like this, what could we do with gameplay?
What if the means were the motive? The set up, and tools presented were the vehicle for a player to fill in his or her own narrative. I'm not necessarily saying 'no' to stories or objectives, but what if they were trimmed to the leanest possible schematic.
Let it be a character driven experience. The player creates an avatar and dives in to a world that enables them to act out the fantasy of the game.
Destiny is a good example of what i'm talking about. Now i think about it. Games like Destiny and Borderlands that find that golden balance between narrative and gameplay, where gameplay

MSX was no Japanese gameconsole like the Xbox, it was a Japanese Home Computer, like the C64 and later the Atari ST and Amiga. A MSX2 was by far superior to a C64, but at the same time also by far inferior to an Amiga 500. The cool thing was it wasn't a specific brand, but a standard, with machines and accessories from Sony, Philips, Panasonic, SpectraVideo and Toshiba, kinda like PCs nowadays.
