"other flip of the dick" This is like my fourth time watching this, and the first time I really payed attention to and caught that line. Brilliant. 10/10.
I just wanted to do the non-typical RUclips comment thing and say that I really enjoy your videos. You have great, detailed critical insight about videogames. I can tell you spend a lot of time reading/watching other critics and not just making short, poorly edited videos about how something is either the best or worst thing ever. Also, you do a pretty good Plinkett impression!
Sure thing! Just remember to cite your source ;) Note: If you're doing a project about Doom and are looking for a legit resource, check out "Masters of Doom" by David Kushner. It's fun reading, too.
Thanks for the views! We're also trying a whole bunch of weird things to make us popular. Check back tomorrow evening, a whole new lineup of videos will go live from 4 to 7 pm EST.
I think you nailed what made Doom so great. All of it is just engaging mindless fun. It's quick, satisfying and responsive. And that's all it really needs to be.
Yes! Do that first-- I'd hate all my hatin' to jelly over into your experience. Let us know what you think, the game has gotten such a mixed reception that almost everyone's opinion about it is interesting
A lot of reasons. There's the increasing crossover work between the movie and film industries, there's a century of film history impacting a few decades of game history, both industries largely market to the same demographic. Ya know, the history and development of "cinematic" gaming is actually a really broad but fascinating topic. That kinda makes me want to write about it...
Did he single-handedly made Doom? Or was it the studio ID Software which has a lot of members of the original team? Oh and by the way Romero made Daikatana, lol
AydarBMSTU Doom the game? Yes, Romero made many of the levels and much of the core gameplay decisions. Carmack did fantastic work making the engine fast and efficient. Many others did a fantastic work, music, textures and so on, but without Romero it would have been a very different game.
I truly admire your current work. Even your small rant on unnecessary upgrade systems was enlightening for someone like me making a game with upgrade mechanics. However, I'm glad you don't just rip off of Mr. Plinkett's reviews anymore. It's just annoying here. Then again, this whole video is talking about a game with a mishmash of game mechanics, so it wouldn't be beyond you to ironically use a similar style to emphasize a point. This is just me thinking out loud, though.
I'm don't know exactly why you decided to adopt the style and timing of RedLetterMedia's reviews and leave out the affected voice and kidnapping jokes, but it was a wonderful idea and I love you for it. The actual content of the video was good, too! Insightful stuff, definitely looking forward to part two.
Tl;dw: Too much mixed-genre actioneering for my delicate sensibilities. Artificially hampered movement and shooting. Next week gets into its weird usage of RPG mechanics, too.
This deserves at least as many views as Egoraptor's "Sequelitis" videos. I've been hoping for a video like this for quite some time.. Now when people ask me why I like DooM more than all the modern FPS hits.. I can just link them to this. Thanks a ton.
The one thing I fondly remember from Rage was the way enemies recoiled and ragdolled from certain types of damage. *That* was well done. *That* I would like to see more of in more games. But the game was shorter than my tiny wiener. Let's not do that in more games.
I dunno I thought rage was ok. Was it the next generation of Doom we all hoped for? No. Did it have more going on mechanically than a lot of the modern military fps games coming out at the time? Probably.
Condemned Sure but it wasn't a modern military fps. It was a post apocalyptic open world fps, and it had way less going on than any of the other of those that came out around that time.
Yeah, but it played like a modern military shooter. Idk man, I don't think its critically appropriate to lump games together based solely on setting. If that rule was applied elsewhere we would wind up comparing "This war of mine" and "Arma III", as both take place on a modern battlefield of some descript. Both games set out to do something different, and should be graded on what that effort accomplished. "Rage" was going for something completely different than "Fallout 3" mechanically. You can argue that Fallout 3 did a better job with the setting, but i wouldn't be so quick to directly compare the mechanics.
Nitpick - aiming in doom actually is effected by movement with some guns. Shoot the shotgun standing still, then compare it to when moving. Once you start shooting, the gun stays in that position, so you're now shooting to the left or right of where you would if standing still. This really only affects pistol and shotgun aiming, but is still big for precise aiming for ammo conservation in earlier levels.
Firearm wielding Doom enemies also have instant bullets, if that's what you mean with "hit scan". The only thing that makes them able to miss their target is their cooldown inbetween or before each shot, since they aim when their attack sequence/animation begins (first frame at 30fps), but not when the shot is about to happen (except the "chaingunners", who I think aim every 1st out of 2 shots). I think that's the big difference between Rage and Doom when you look at the enemies.
I still liked rage more then the majority of FPSes i played that year despite it's general lack of originality and over all derivativ-ness. It played well, had tight controls, and fun guns and no auto aim assist.
I absolutely understand peoples positions and opinions about RAGE, and I do believe their opinions are justified. with that said I liked RAGE. It had solid gameplay and fun scenarios. I liked it. I just recently put Fallout 3 down in a fit of pure boredom and put Rage in and had a good deal more fun.
Or...and hear me out here...I just didn't like Fallout 3. I mean that shit happens you know. People don't like everything. If you really want me to I could go into the history of incredibly shoddy work Bethesda does time and time again, such incredibly shoddy work that it makes RAGE look like a piece of coding brilliance. I mean they have the reputation of making games that you should only play on PC where the community can fix all their crappy work for reason.
The thing is, enemies in Doom that actually use hitscan weapons tend to be either fairly weak or rare. In comparison a lot of the projectile weapons in Rage that the enemies use have large splash areas, meaning even if you see it coming, you don't actually have time to get out of the way.
I actually think they could get away with it. Doom is a good deal more of a recognizable IP than Painkiller, and banking on 90's nostalgia is a tactic that worked pretty damn well for Nintendo. If they wanted to pull a Campcom and build it using the classic graphics, then there's a simple solution: make a cell phone game. But now that I think about it, the fans have been asking for a modern-looking but retro-playing Doom game since 2004. They've been asking for it by the droves. - G
tip for this game.. when u get to the first town play the gambling board game with the bandit like guys by the store. Rack up a lot of money buy all the upgrades and extra ammo and you'll have a ton of fun even on hardest difficulty.
On the third flip of the dick, games like Xonotic show how to do regen right. Your health regenerates at an increasingly slow rate as you approach 100, and decreases at an increasingly fast rate the higher you are above 100. If you just stood there, or didn't take any hits, your health would come back, but because of the map design and playerbase (this is a game in the quake tradition, after all), that will never happen, so you have to constantly look for health, but the ticking down health above 100 means that you can't just go get all the medkits and then start gunning down noobs like there's no tomorrow. And thanks to the regen, if those newbs can get away from you for a few seconds, they might be able to take a 3rd or 4th hit.
Well, Painkiller WAS released in 2004 and it seems that it wasnt enough even for all the praise it gets (i think it was overshadowed by Half Life 2) So the big question is: How do you top Doom and Painkiller? This intrigues me because it gives me the impresion that if ANYTHING is changed then it wont be recogniced as a Doom game. And, it would be more cheaper to just buy other Doom-like games like Serious Sam for 10$ rather than pay 60$+ for a graphic upgrade. Hell, you can even play STRIFE free
1/2 Wolfenstein 3D has "mouse movement" and "alt-for-strafe" as well. but no one used it because: 1) it was not necessary 2) it was actually more confusing and halting due to the amount of keys you could hold down at once. Say you were to hold down Alt-left_arrow as well as opening a door and shoot? No can do; you'd get a beep from your computer telling you that you were holding down too many keys at once. Having your hand on the mouse also wasn't really effective, as
@Super Bunnyhop : actually i always thought that the "DooM" logo is WAY more similar to the logo of a Crustpunk band from 1987 called .. well.. DooM (instead of, as said in the video, to the logo-font of Metallica) seriously..go check their logo on google...they're practically identical
These reviews are hilarious and informative at the same time! My favorite part of Rage was the Doom easter egg..................................... yeah 8).
Going up against hitscan weapons is annoying. A couple of enemies use them in Duke 3D and they are a pain to dodge, but not the shotgun-wielding pigcops. They deal a lot of damage, but they shoot slower than most other enemies, miss often at long range and always clearly telegraph when they're about to shoot.
@10:28. What is he trying to say about aimming for consoles and PC? He says it too fast it's hard for me to listen. something about the speed of the mouse and how a stick has limited movement?
Fun fact: there is a doom rpg. Developed for mobile platforms in symbian times. There is also a fantasy rpg that uses the same engine. They were actually quite decent games
I'd definatly add stuff like mouselook and open gl like there is in modern source ports but other than that I don't think there's anything really wrong with a retro Doom 4.
I haven't herd of this mod so I have to go play it soon. Also I still fail to see the problem with id releasing what is basically a Doom II map pack. It worked for Megaman 9!
True, but they assisted to some degree, even if Avalanche handled the bulk of development. It’s not like Avalanche could’ve done combat that good, even if it was the only good thing about Rage 2
Hearing your opinion on doom is pretty funny because for me the game is about as far away from a power trip as possible, the game constantly throws ambushes at you to the point I pretty much assumed that If I pressed a button I was going to get ambushed, for most stages the music isn’t a awesome rock song but more something from a horror game, and the game has dark sections invisible monsters and dark sections with invisible monsters. But the thing that truly made the game so terrifying for me is that if you die you lose all your weapons and ammo, because of that I was pretty much panicking my entire time playing the game, i actually stopped playing because I found the game too stressful and scary.
What about them who likes to run and gun without having to look around for h-packs all the time???Every shooter doesnt have to be xactly the same, does it..?
Yeah I had a similar thought. I can't believe you're using Plinkett's transitions. It just doesn't feel right in the middle of an otherwise quality video.
Honestly, I wrote a pretty negative review of Rage a while back, but for the most part, I think I misjudged it. You're right, it was a shift into stop and pop, and when I kept trying to play it as run and gun I suffered for it, and actually came to loathe the game as a result.
Wait, Halo doesn't share those mechanics. You can fluidly move and shoot in Halo. Admittedly, you move much more slowly, but you don't have to stop and aim every shot. Sticky aim was put in to make moving and aiming with two joysticks more feasible.
Indeed, you should be sorry to say that because you are mistaken. You're probably thinking of Wolfenstein 3D, because it's certainly not Doom that you are referring to. In Doom, mouse right and left worked for turning. Mouse up and down moved forward and back, respectively . You could hold the Alt key as a strafe modifier.
I find this interesting, I've never played Rage, I was excited for it before it was made, and even own it(I got it since it was bundled with Fallout3GOTY which is what I really wanted) I thought one day I may give it a change, but I'm not a big FPS fan. It really lacks anything that seems to make it worth spending the time to try and enjoy still.
"iron sights button" as a way to compensate for slow aiming of analog sticks? But...but...Call of Duty first pioneered ADS mechanics on PC. And the first truly big console shooter, Halo, had no ADS mechanic! Just saying.
I'm picking up on a RedLetterMedia influence in your newer reviews. I can dig it, because I love RLM, but don't stray from your own thing. Still a great video.
Story in classic Doom was like it was written by nine year olds, but I don't care. This is so much better and genuine than boring refined games of today (with stories worse than B-Movies anyway, just pretending to be serious).
Oh my what awesome is this! :D I start watching your videos because their so informative and so insightful and here is a video sounding like Redlettermedia(Mr.plinket) crazy fun! :D

0:12 "these guys made Doom".
Doom's game designer was John Romero, it he was long gone before Rage came out.
Did he single-handedly made Doom? Or was it the studio ID Software which has a lot of members of the original team? Oh and by the way Romero made Daikatana, lol
AydarBMSTU John Carmack was the last original Id Software developer, and he's not responsible for the game design.

I mean they have the reputation of making games that you should only play on PC where the community can fix all their crappy work for reason.
Man, you've come a long way since the early days.
Man, I gotta go back and finish the last episode of Blood now. I need my dose of crazy Doom clone action
Good job man, makes me wanna see Plinkett review videogames now...

you need to just make a short video showing how balls to the wall awesome brutal doom is.

This is may be a bit random, but I'm curious as to why you chose a rabbit wearing a hat as the show mascot.
I get more than a little bit of inspiration from Plinkett in this video. Great job though, loved it.
I'm picking up on a RedLetterMedia influence in your newer reviews. I can dig it, because I love RLM, but don't stray from your own thing. Still a great video.
I'd love to see this revisited now that the new DOOM is out and very very different from RAGE
Story in classic Doom was like it was written by nine year olds, but I don't care. This is so much better and genuine than boring refined games of today (with stories worse than B-Movies anyway, just pretending to be serious).
Someone said Bee movie?
Just what I'm looking for: game analysis that's intellectual AND hilarious; reminds me of Red Letter Media. Subbed!
Oh my what awesome is this! :D
I start watching your videos because their so informative and so insightful and here is a video sounding like Redlettermedia(Mr.plinket)
crazy fun! :D
No, we love YOU!
