    First time in years since the recent Lego Star Wars game that Grievous' voice actor got to play the character again.
    Since he's a main sound designer, he's the only one at the studio that knows the right audio settings for the Grievous voice.

    Let’s start with Morgan, as this story is about her.
    She is a character driven by trauma.
    In the Imperial era, she talks about revenge on her enemies. But who are these enemies? The Separatists no longer exist, and Grievous is dead.
    Morgan’s logic, driven by her trauma, has led her down one of the most destructive paths. When she speaks of enemies, she’s mainly referring to future enemies. She is paranoid and constantly ready to fight for survival. She’s trapped herself in a cage, not letting anyone in and trusting no one. She has only accepted Thrawn and the Empire. Why?
    She wants to work for the Empire not for the good of its people but for her survival and especially for the opportunities the Empire gives her to fight and eliminate her enemies, potentially even the remaining Separatists. This gives her a sense of control over her fate and the fate of others, providing her with a sense of security and comfort.
    Morgan sees this as her life's purpose-constantly searching for enemies and being ready to fight and confrontation because at any moment, an attack could happen and destroy everything. She definitely doesn’t want a repeat of Dathomir/trauma and that's why she will always choose confrontation.
    An example is the decision to get wepons and fight the droids or an alliance with Thrawn.
    Regarding the attack on Dathomir, it’s worth mentioning that if we look at the percentages, it was more destructive than Order 66.
    Meybe around 300-400 Jedi survived.
    As for the Nightsisters-maybe 10.
    About the Dathomir clans, yes, there are many, and they constantly fought among themselves. This was why Ventress was given to criminals-to ensure the Nightsisters’ protection.
    Regarding the Mountain Clan, we don’t know much except that they seem to lean towards a more pacifist path, and it’s possible their magic is “untainted by darkness” due to their peace. But this is my stretched analysis, and it could be different since we know nothing about them. Additionally, I can say their attire resembles that of Vader’s apprentice from the legends-Lumiya. (Well, Vader had many apprentices in the legends.) This is likely a reference.
    As for Thrawn, he is an absolute genius. Give him one ship, and he will pose a massive threat.
    In the legends, after the fall of the Empire, he bled the New Republic dry and was fittingly named “Heir to the Empire.” Of course he lost, but it has to be said. He was a huge problem because no one knew what his next move would be. And his every attack was deadly. (He even used Tantiss)
    He analyzes his opponents' moves and learns from them.
    He even analyzed Ahsoka’s maneuvers from the Clone Wars. This is his passion.
    Additionally, he has an obsession with art and understanding cultures.
    All of this allows Thrawn to predict his enemies’ moves before they even think about them.
    To emphasize, I’ll quote Filoni: “Vader is a threat to the Jedi; Thrawn is a threat to the very existence of the Rebellion.”
    (So Thrawn during the Battle of Endor = EZ win for the Empire)
    Bonus: Thrawn figured out who Vader is
    Regarding his race, he is a Chiss (a new race). This race is from regions of the galaxy unknown to the Empire, and that’s all I’ll say because you might be interested in the comics later.
    The attack by Thrawn’s personal guard, Rukh, was a test for Morgan. Thrawn saw that she had talent, that she was smart, but being smart without being able to defend yourself makes you worthless and pathetic. Morgan had to prove she could defend her mind.
    Thrawn doesn’t want her projects; he wants the person who designs them. He wants to surround himself with intelligent minds and talents. By proving she could defend herself and her mind, Morgan showed she was worthy of his attention because she would survive an assassination attempt by Thrawn’s enemies or the Rebellion or something else (which, let’s be honest, is normal because everyone fights for power in the Empire).
    As for Captain Pellaeon, he’s worth remembering. Wherever he appears, you’ll know it’s Thrawn’s interests at play. Pellaeon is, in a sense, Thrawn’s right hand.

    • @benspiller
      @benspiller  Месяц назад

      I’m really liking her character so far in how she’s motivated by revenge and fear, she has the longing to average what she lost but also fears that her survival could be taken away at any moment as her whole life was destroyed before. It creates a really interesting character as they’re motivation can never be satisfied, and they will always be fearful of losing again since it was something so defining to them, and they will always be filled with rage and revenge as the people who caused her pain are all gone.
      That’s such a good way to look at the massacre, yes more people died during Order 66 but at least more jedi survived and you could have more hope in the order reforming, for the Nightsisters that hope is in shambles with how few are left and I’d assume none of them are on the same level of Talzin so restarting that whole thing would be impossible.
      The other clans of Dathomir seem so interesting as this place is so deep within the Dark Side of the Force, I’d imagine that any culture’s that are from here would grow powerful in it and come out as unique as the Nightsisters. The Mountain clan was super interesting since they are such opposites to the Nightsisters with how Light and Jedi like they seem, the beige or cream robes and the white light powers just scream Light Side of the Force which somehow manages to exist on this planet covered in darkness.
      Thrawn sounds so insane now, he seemed cool from this but now he seems to go beyond that entirely! Can’t wait to see him show up more as I’m loving how this Franchise has been able to use genius characters especially after Hemlock, this guy seems like he has the intelligence of Hemlock, maybe even beyond, and far more power plus an interest in the Empire at large rather than just science.

    The model for Grievous was the same one from his cameo in the Clone Wars finale and Bad Batch prologue.
    So the model finally got to be used in a action scene, after first being made right before the original cancellation, since that was the design Grievous was meant to have during the remaining 50 episodes.

    In Legends, the founder of the Witches of Dathomir was a rogue Jedi named Allya who was exiled by the Jesus High Council to a penal colony on Dathomir after she started to practice the dark side of the force. There she taught other exiled women she found there to master the force, these women would become the first Witches of Dathomir.

    37:56 Alien racism is actually a big thing in Star Wars, especially in Legends during The Old Republic. The Sith Empire were filled with humans that tended to be disgusted by aliens, but more often than not, were ruled by them ironically. In Knights of the Old Republic, not even more than 30 minutes into the game, there’s a Sith agent that talks about how aliens are taking all the jobs (very political and very intentional choices of words).

    Also on Morgan's "revenge" motives
    She never got closure for her anger, Grievous died and the Separatists were destroyed thus ending the Clone Wars. She ofc realized that the enemy of the Separatists was the Republic and by the time she made something out of herself it became the Empire, so choosing them was easy
    However what really drives her is just a need to inflict the cruelty that she received, amasing power to secure the return of the Nightsisters no matter who she has to hurt in the process

    • @benspiller
      @benspiller  Месяц назад

      I really like this idea for a villain, it's like if Palpatine with his desire to end the reign of the Jedi, suddenly had his victory stolen by someone else and he didn't get to do it himself leaving him with all the desire for action he could express. For Morgan, it's a little less grand but the idea seems so intriguing and far more personal, can't wait to see what this makes of her and what her future will be as I can almost see her becoming a quite chaotic villain with nothing left to lose but all the motivation in the world.

    Admiral Thrawn was introduced decades ago in the Thrawn trilogy of books by Timothy Zahn. The first one is called Heir to the Empire. The original trilogy is now considered Legends since it came out before the prequels and not everything meshed. The duology after that is probably also Legends. The last series of books might be Canon, because some of them are quite recent, but I am not sure. The books are all excellent. Thrawn is one of my favorite characters.

    Hopefully no one spoiled it for you, but Admiral Thrawn is a "Legends" character from the Heir to the Empire books. While originally deemed canon under Lucas, when Disney bought Star Wars, all the Thrawn stories were moved from the Star Wars canonical universe and deemed "legends." Many fans were very upset this cool created character was no longer in-universe.
    Dave Filoni (you know who that is, right?) was a big fan of the Thrawn novels (by Timothy Zahn) and has worked Thrawn back into canon. He'll turn up again at some point. I just won't say when and where.

    I mean to be fair Morgan did a lot for the people there before she went off the deep end taking a small group of people and building not only a well-fortified village but helping them to control other planets around them is major for such a small group of people and she was basically hoodwinked by the imperials she likely would have abandoned them for Thrawn anyway but wanting her dead before all that is wild 😅

    So, Mother Talzin is a Great Mother, that is her position among the Nightsisters, she is their leader. She is a powerful witch, even Palpatine admitted that. Hell, after Savage was killed on Mandalore, Sidious had in essence put fourth a plot to eliminate the most powerful adversary left to stop him, other than the Jedi. And that person was none other than Talzin. Palpatine, Dooku and Grievous overpowered her with ease, and Maul was pushed aside, dragged away from the planet by his Mandalorian warriors, as Grievous struck the final blow that finally eliminated Talzin for good.
    The person Morgan Elsbeth calls mother is likely her actual biological mother. Sure Talzin has offspring herself, Maul, Savage and Feral are testaments to that fact. But not every Nightsister or Zabrak Nightbrother is of her direct descent. Ventress is an example of that, and so is Morgan Elsbeth.

    • @benspiller
      @benspiller  Месяц назад +1

      For some reason I this whole time I thought Talzin was actually the biological mother to all the witches 😂 cool to know that isn't the case as that at least means the clan has a better way to grown in numbers.

    16:15 So when it comes to magic, Sith alchemy and Nightsisters’ dark magick is pretty different, from what I know, Sith alchemy is not as powerful or capable or else Mother Talzin would not be the only person Sidious fears in the entire galaxy. Another thing is that the Nightsisters are the only ones who have any kind of control over the dark side, they have a special resistance because of their methods and they themselves have an affinity for the dark side, Dathomir is also a nexus of the dark side. Ventress mentions this in the Dark Disciple novel “Nightsisters know the dark side better than anyone. We grow up steeped in it, but we can remain ourselves-unlike the Sith. That balance is what you must learn.”
    But I think we can assume that the Mountain Clan uses the light side based on the way they speak about things.

    • @benspiller

      I hope one of the shows or movies down the lines goes deeper into this as it feels like such a big thing that the Force can be used like this but it's barely been touched on, Talzin is incredibly powerful and Sidious has done all kinds of weird stuff yet it seems like this isn't getting explored. The idea of a race of people being raised within the Dark side from birth sounds like huge thing aswell yet they seem to be presented like any other species.

    Admiral thrawn is actually a more important character to remamber than Morgan, for when you go to rebels he wil be a friquent face and he is both inntereasing and terrafying for many reasons
    1. he is and Alien(good job spotting that) the Empire is very reacist towards Aliens so he got to his position in the empire using raw talent insted of malipulation
    (He was actually bullied hard in the imperial Acadamy he went to for beeing an Alien but he never let that go under his skin Even when he was beaten up for it and helped his bullies Get usefull Jobs in the Empire afterwards)
    2. his intellegence and calculation is described as terrafying in the books he first appeard in, imagen the intelegence of Tech and coldness of Tarkin combined.
    3. to give an impression of how smart he is, in the books apparently he met Anakin once during the Clone Wars and so when he later joined the empire and met Vader he was able to correctly calculate that Anakin is Vader, What did he do with this imformation you may Ask? NOTHING bc nothing good can come from it. Smart enough to figure out the biggest Twist in starwars and logical enough to do nothing with it.
    4. unlike Tarkin or Rampart, thrawn has a bigger vision of the Empire than most and is very philosophical in his approch to his enemy and has a big innterest in Art, (He actually has the mask of General Grievous in his collection)
    5. he was not Cannon before Rebels and is always presented as the Coldest Admiral in the Empire, and after the Emporor was killed he was Even given the name THRAWN THE HEIR TO THE EMPIRE
    with this sed, thats how he is described in the books, wheather or not the writers do him justice in the shows he appears in, Well i leave that to you, he is at least more intimidating than his grey Ninja…..um Rook, he is just his Grey Ninja

    About Witchcraft and different force religions in general:
    When comparing different force cultures, many abilities seem to be related to how dark or light the philosophy is and are shared among force users, while certain abilities are only accessible to certain religions because they have to open themselves to the force in a certain way to achieve this exact thing. With this comes the color of magic that a certain group has (in my Headcanon). For Witches in general, I would explain the exisitence of these different defining abilities through the use of chanting while using the force. The chanting itself is not magical, but the practice allows the spell chanter to focus their mind on more abstract things and use the force to achieve witchcraft, whitch would be otherwise very hard. This is similar to how most force users use their hand to guide the force during a force push, even though it is not necessarily required. It just makes the abstraction of a push less abstract.

    • @benspiller
      @benspiller  Месяц назад

      I honestly love that there’s a way to include Witchcraft in Star Wars and it not only fits but keeps being expanded upon. It feels so well integrated with how it all stems from not only understanding the force but also different ways of being able to focus and concentrate on it allowing for different cultures to form around it and take on different appearances for each user.

    Unpacking all of these newly introduced concepts:
    Actually most of the Characters that were shown (especially in the second episode) were already introduced in release order, so I can understand how confusing watching this must have been for you, since there were not only the new witches and imperial stuff introduced, but you also got introduced to a big set of important new characters, that you would otherwise already know. Overwhelming.
    The Dathomir Stuff:
    Mountain Clan: In Legends, there used to be a lot of different witch clans on Dathomir, while Canon mainly focused on the Nightsisters. With this show, the existence of different clans of witches has been reintroduced to canon. In the following shows, there will be a focus on the mystical side of star wars and we will see how all kinds of cultures view and use the force in different ways, so you'll get used to seeing that there is more than Jedi (Light), Sith (Dark) and Witch (Dark (until now)). When looking at the philosophy of the Mountain Clan witches, I would compare it to the philosophy of the Lurmen (Lemur species) in Clone Wars that were completely pacifist, but here we have a willingnes to defend in emergencies. I would say that this might be even more peaceful than the jedi (at least in the clone wars). I made separate comment about force cultures to not overload this one...
    Morgans Character:
    I wouldn't say that Morgan wanted to draw the droids out. I think that her concern for the mountain clans safety was genuine and because of the philosophy she was taught, she doesn't realize, that surviving this peacefully would have worked. That untrained people with a lack of fighting abilities exist is probably completely new to her, so she is naive...
    What is her motivation? First revenge, of course. If she saw her enemy in the seperatist alliance, it would make sense that she is against the rebellion later on, since while the republic turned into the empire, the seperatists that renained were now against the empire and started forming first resistance groups.
    I think that the second motivation that becomes even stronger as time goes on is to find a group that she can be part of. Since all of her sisterhood died, she needs to find something to replace it, which is pretty hard, since she doesn't just want a small family but be part of something bigger. Because of her flaw when it comes to empathy and accepting own mistakes, she doesn't manage to achieve this goal.
    Building a Tie Fighter as a Witch?
    In the second episode, she is presenting the concept of a new Tie Fighter, but we never saw how much she was involved in the design proces and the engineering. Compare: Elon Musk didn't invent the Tesla, but saw its potential. I personally would have liked to see how Morgan made the connections and managed to get from Episode 1 to 2, but there are only 6 Episodes total, so I understand why it was cut...
    About Thrawn being an Alien: There are only very few Aliens serving the Empire, since the Empire is speciecist. Thrawn being an Admiral shows what an extremely intelligent mastermind he must be, but you should just wait and see his actions speak for themselves to understand how he managed to get here... He is a fan favourite and also imported from Legends, but has already made plenty of Canon appearances. I can recommend the amazing first canon thrawn trilogy, which shows how he managed to fight his way through the imperial ranks while struggling to resist the racism. Careful about spoilers though. I think that the first two novels are fine to read, but for the third you should wait until the final season of Star Wars Rebels...

    • @benspiller
      @benspiller  Месяц назад

      Even though this was really confusing I love that all this stuff stems from Legends, the Mountain Clan already seem super cool in just how light they seem, no Jedi has been able to do what that Witch did, and I’d assume it’s because of their level of pacifism, the Jedi fight and do violence yet these guys don’t which could make them more in-tune with the Light Side.
      Morgan seems like such an interesting character, someone who is so driven by revenger but the only way of it being satisfied was destroyed by someone else, leaving no way for her to ever find relief. Her actions with the other sisters I’m no realising came from the different cultures since their so vastly different, got caught up in the idea of this being a villains show so assumed their choses would stem from darker places, but seeing that she was raised in a combative society makes perfect sense that she would expect others to not be able to defend themselves.
      I started to pick up on her longing to be apart of something when she said was talking about the people on her planet and how they never really were her people, she has a desperate longing to find where she belongs and no matter what she can never find because they’re all gone which is really tragic but also adds to this drive in her that can never be satisfied which makes for a really chaotic character where they could anything which is really exciting.
      I really like how you put this 😂 it seemed so weird how she went from Witchcraft to designing spaceships, but this makes way more sense where she can understand the technology and see where people may of missed a chance to improve it which happens load throughout history. The jump was definitely necessary for the story they were telling but I do wish we could have seen the time she spent in between this too.
      Thrawn seems like such an incredible character already so I can’t wait to get more on him and even when I thought the Empire couldn’t get worse, they end up being racist too, definitely spikes my intrigue on what makes this guy so special that the Empire not only made the exception of included him but also allowed him to end up in such a high position. I’ll definitely be checking out those books now as from everything I’m hearing about this guy I don’t want to miss a single thing!

    This watch order is really interesting.. getting to know Morgan’s origins first before anything else. I would say watch Obi-wan Kenobi in between eps 5 and 6 for the exact chronological order, but it’s not too important. Also Morgan’s Tie Defenders will be tied into some other content as they implied the Empire stole her ideas.

      @benspiller  Месяц назад +1

      Gonna do the last parts of Barriss and Morgan's story just before Rebels so next up is Acolyte, Solo, Kenobi then probably Rebels, I thought I recognised the Tie Defender being Vader's ship from Episode 4 but having now looked that up it's clear I'm wrong 😂 Looking forward to seeing it show up though cause it looks really cool.

    32:15 They are Nightbrothers, the Nightsisters call them that and they call themselves that. “Darth Maul,” “Nightbrothers,” and “Nightsisters” are all Dathomirian Zabraks. Female Zabraks don’t have horns and have pale white skin. Whereas, Iridonian Zabraks, from the Zabrak homeworld, both male and females have horns. Morgan is a Dathomirian human, her family was most likely just born on Dathomir but are not the same species. The Nightsisters and Nightbrothers are not a species, they’re just groups, mostly mad up of Dathomirian Zabraks.
    There is much more lore of the origins explored in future content.

    Non spoiler: just context.
    Thrawn’s species is not the same as Cad Bane. Thrawn is a Chiss, a very reclusive race in the Unknown Regions of the galaxy.
    You are correct in that we have never seen another race is the Empire. Must be a reason why Thrawn is in such a high position…you can find out why in the Thrawn books

    I won't tell too much about Thrawn, as to avoid future potential spoilers.
    Thrawn is a member of the Chiss specie, not human, that much is true. So finding him having managed to join a rather xenophobic faction like the Empire would seem out of place, right? Unless he had something to offer the Empire, that is. As you probably already could tell from his dialogue in this episode, Thrawn is quite the intellectual man, one might wonder then if that is what he offers the Empire, in order to gain a position of Admiral, even. Probably rose trough the ranks rather quickly too I'd assume, especially for an alien within the Empire.
    That's all I'll tell you about him.
    The guy you found that looked like Yularen would be Thrawn's second in command, Pellaeon. He was a notable figure in Legends, though I won't tell you anymore about him when it comes to Canon.

      Thrawn already seems super interesting and I'm really looking forward to finding out more about him!! His lines about seeing the flaws within the Empire and predicting it's fall was the bit that sold him and if he can already see that and I can't even imagine what else he's able to deduce from the state of the Galaxy.
