Your videos are the best, I love seeing the older aircraft dogfights, no missiles, all skill and positioning. Do you think you could do some more Focke Wulf 190D9 content, that plane is such a classic.
Personally, I think there was a missed opportunity for the .50 cal round. I'm not saying the 20mm isn't more powerful. I'm just saying the .50 is a devastating round too. It just wasn't firing fast enough. I mean, it's fine when being used by ground troops shooting at something moving no faster than a vehicle can move, but, a jet could literally fly between the rounds due to the slow firing rate. The .50 (especially if using armor piercing-incendiary rounds) can punch through armored vehicles with ease. If they had designed a .50 caliber rotary cannon like they did for the 20mm (AKA: the M61 Vulcan), you could cut some planes in half with ease using .50 caliber rounds. I mean, look how devastating the Minigun is with its insane firing rate, and it's only 7.62mm rounds coming out of that thing. Lol. Great video, as always. This is definitely one of my favorite channels on RUclips.
F-84 Thunderjet and M3 HMG, almost twice the fire rate compared to M2s if memory serves. There was a more dakka per second option, but I think at that point it was decided that ammo weight for enough time on trigger makes 20mm much more efficient.
ROF of an individual Browning .50 cal was greater than ROF for an individual 20/23/37mm cannon... muzzle velocity of the .50 is higher than the cannon rounds... and the F-86 carried six .50s as compared to the MiGs two 23mm and single 37mm. By any measurement, the F-86 is putting out a MASSIVELY higher volume of fire (number of individual projectiles over time). The "problem" is that standard .50 ball tended to poke holes in things, and cannon rounds tend to rip things apart. The GE Vulcan M61 (20mm rotary cannon) is derived from a series of multi-barrel rotary guns that have been chambered for almost every cartridge imaginable, from .22 LR to 30mm ... including... (you guessed it) .50 cal ... see GAU-19. The choice is Probability of Hit (single round) vs Probability of Kill (single round). Prior to 1950, the trade-off favored the .50 cal ... after 1950 (with improvments in cannon ROF and ballistics) it favored to 20mm. Additionally, DCS has well-known and often argued issues with the .50s on the F-86 that leave it at a disadvantage against the MiG-15 (check the DCS forums).
@@awger90210 I was mainly referring to using a rotary cannon like the Vulcan that I mentioned. I'm aware of the GAU-19. However, it's only a 3 barrel rotary. Which is nothing to laugh at, but, it's ROF is about 4,000 rpm vs the Minigun and the Vulcan having six barrels and having a ROF of up to 6,000 rpm. I feel like if a six barrel version for the .50 would have been made to get it's ROF up to around 6,000 like the other two, it would have been even more effective. That's all I was saying.
