Why refer to what is happening in Ukraine as a conflict? It appears to me to be a full scale war that has cost hundreds of thousands of lives in which Russia has razed large cities in Ukraine to the ground. Russia invaded Ukraine in 2014, firstly by annexing Crimea and then by taking over large areas of Eastern Ukraine. Why should any part of that be referred to as a conflict. An independant sovereign nation has been very brutally invaded by a much larger neighbour. To refer to any part of the the war crimes and wholesale crimes against humanity in Ukraine by Russia as a conflict is a travesty.

An EU led intervention using European forces will more than suffice for the task in hand. Rather the Yanks be there than not but if UK and EU nations can deploy in Western Ukraine and carry out air denial over Eastern Ukraine may send the correct message providing we all go in with our eyes opened knowing we may have to up the ante very quickly. @@Joshpox You never fought Russia directly except in the 19th century - because today Russia is incomparably powerful compared with you and can obliterate you. In the Crimean War of 1856, Britain, France and Turkey defeated Russia. But today 50 nations with the US cannot defeat Russia.
The last time you had a confrontation with the Soviet Union was in the Suez crisis 1956. Britain, France and Israel invaded Egypt in another fling of colonialism. At that time the Soviet Union stepped in and asked Britain to withdraw and said it would nuke Britain. Britain turned to the US for help, but Eisenhower turned you down. So Anthony Eden's govt. had to climb down and it is a humiliation you have not overcome. You avoided a fight with the Soviet Union because you knew the outcome.
You are still looking to fight Russia - but you dare not fight directly, you try with Ukraine as a proxy. You know what will be the outcome of a direct fight. You cannot fight a land war, your navy cannot fight the Houthis, and you are incapable of producing the kind of hypersonic missiles Russia has. A single Sarmat missile can devastate an area the size of Britain. Then why do you go looking for a fight ?

Ukraine lost about 1.2 Luxembourgs worth of land over an entire year of fighting. Luxembourg is tiny. This is way slower than WWI Western Front. The lines are moving extremely slow. If you put a bar graph or pie graph of Russian control verses Ukrainian control up for this year and last people could hardly tell the difference. When fronts move so slow then everyone has morale problems and this type of war makes everyone weary that it is pointless.
BOTH sides are exhausted. Whoever attacks takes very high losses because there is rarely a place to hide. If Russia has lots of resources they would have opened up another one or two fronts and overwhelmed Ukraine long ago. Russia is merely clawing forward at a snail's pace. Russia took THREE years to advance 30 km in many places. I can walk or bike that in one day. That's INSANE.
Flat ground (that has lots of fields with tons of treelines) isn't much of a benefit in this war at all because of drones. Tanks have this tendency to be out in the open on this terrain for all to see when moving. You can't move forward without exposing yourself. Defenders no longer have to always expose themselves because they can fly drones or call in drone guided artillery that is 20 km back or they can snipe with long range suppressed rifles. No one needs forward observers or large infantry battles, etc.
The Russians do not find better success on flat ground. The best success Russia has is when it is foggy and the weather is too poor for drones to fly and often this combined with night. Russia is then able to sneak infantry forwards in infiltration assaults under the cover of fog etc. In the muddy fall trenches get filled with water and Ukraine has a harder time moving reinforcements around with vehicles to hot spots. Combine this with foggy and rainy conditions where drones often can't fly and this explains Russia's gains. Usually, advancements are best made when the weather is good but this war isn't usual.
Russia crossing open flat ground is just open season for artillery and drones. If Russia wants to advance they have to come out of the protection of cover.
If Russia could collapse Ukraine's air defenses THEN this would have a major effect. Or if Russia could build and equip another force of 500,000 and open another front then that could have an effect.
Troop density on the front is only 10 to 20 soldiers per square km (30 km deep and >1,000 km which is 300,000 to 600,000 troops on each side). Ukraine as the defender is heavily defending all borders with Belarus, Transnistria, and with Russia. Russia only has to defend the Ukrainian border and for a long time only had light defenses on Russia proper. This density is a tiny number compared to most wars in history. Everyone is spread out and trying to stay hidden. It takes a long time and insane amounts of resources to dislodge spread out and dug in defenders. People can dig trenches and foxholes in treelines or can even hide them in fields when summer comes again and those get concealed. An infantry soldier with a drone or a Javelin can take out a tank 5 km away. A hidden machine can take out a large number of soldiers in the open.
It's not WWI where everyone had human waves of hundreds or thousands of infantry soldiers charging each other.
WWI had ridiculous eye watering numbers of losses in single battles and orders of magnitude higher troop concentrations. Modern tech forces everyone to spread out more and allowed each soldier to be so much more deadly which paradoxally lowers casualty rates. Modern mines combined with drones are a horrible combo.
Without really concentrating firepower advancing is really hard in this war. However, since no one has air superiority (that can quickly pile the firepower in one spot) they have to drag artillery forwards or concentrate troops to increase firepower to overwhelm a section of defenses. This just makes a "target rich environment." Russia can't concentrate its superior numbers too much without ten folding its losses.
It is a positional war where Russia repeatedly assaults Ukrainian positions with the vast majority of the assaults failing. Russia hopes that the assaults will reveal Ukrainian positions and maybe once in a while they get lucky and take another treeline. Russia then hopes to take enough treelines to pressure supply routes into Ukrainian logistics hubs and force Ukraine to withdraw. Russia can then advance into the small gap made a bit faster. It is then rinse and repeat over and over.
