Dead Sea: From world wonder to sinkhole nightmare

- Once a tourist attraction and one of the world's first health resorts, the Dead Sea is receding at an alarming rate. Multiple canals and pipelines were proposed to reduce its recession. And though the dangers have been known for years, little has been done on the ground. Some say it could be too late. Let's get started with this report by Maya Margit, on one of the major environmental problems caused by the decline of the Dead Sea - the creation of sinkholes.

Sorry to hear that the Dead Sea might be drying up at an alarming rate. I once went into the Dead Sea when I lived in Israel back in 1982-83. It was a great experience. Hope something can be done to save it. Thanx for posting this.
The first time I heard about this, it was so long ago that the Dead Sea was only sick.
I remember watching a NOVA documentary on PBS (before they went whole hog communist) where they were talking about the company "The Dead Sea Works". This was back in the 1990s and they were discussing the fact that the Dead Sea was receding. Almost a generation later, we're still talking about it. The NOVA documentary suggested they tap into the Mediterranean Sea to supplement the Jordan River. They talked about it being a simple canal cut through Israel but I could see them putting in a pipeline. Although this might solve the water problem, there are certain ecological problems with this solution. It's going to come down to, which problem is worse, the drying up of the Dead Sea or the introduction of sea warter from either the Mediterranean or the Red Sea.
The largest funding source for NOVA is the David Koch foundation. That's not a communists entity.
If they are so concerned about it, why not put a.couple.of.pipelones from the Mediterranean to the dead sea to fill it back up. No need for pumps becaue its below sea level. The pipes probably wouldbt need to be that big either. Like the regular storm.main pipes.

The canal is a bad idea. There are dried up lake, river, Nd sea beds all over the world and signs on even more ancient lass obvious instances.
I believe the canal is a horrible idea. Introduces different quality of water, and it also can introduce different microscopic organisms that make each sea unique to the other.
Maybe open the dams more when the rainy season is and allow more water to reach the sea!! Minimize the impact the cosmetic company has on the environment. Significantly limit how much water or sand or minerals they can take out per year!
If it's the Dead Sea already and it disappears, will they change the name to Gone Sea, as in Dead and Gone?

Given it's relatively young age, it's easy to forget that not too long ago it didn't exist at all. Sometimes we fail to only look at one side of the story and forget that our world is dynamic.

The big pipe from mediterrain sea should work on gravity as the dead sea is huge depression. You could possible generate power from it but I guess salt water is problematic for turbines.

3:11, what is killing the Dead Sea?
Long story short: if you look at the area on google maps, you will see that there are salt flats south of the lake. Those are artificial flats, made to collect salt from the Dead sea sinds it is one of the saltiest bodies of salt water on earth. The company(ies) who own those flats let in water from the lake (yes the Dead sea is a lake) on to those flats and leave it there to evaporate resulting in salt being left over from evaporation. This has been going on and on resulting in the level drop of the lake thus "the Dead sea is dying"

Cosmetics vs saving the Dead Sea? Cosmetics are a multi-billion dollar business, and most women and greedy businessmen will not want to give up their first loves.

Blame industries, governments that don't listen and other factors, this is why we have climate change and it is effecting the whole world at an arlarming rate.
