I am a welder. It's so easy to build a steel fence with inserts you bolt on that make it solid like a wall during a storm and prevent water from coming in. Any water in the yard is drained to a pump.

I'm from Pinellas and I had a dream about a year ago that I was exactly in Treasure Island walking from the beach between the condos while water rushed through them onto to street causing chaos. I thought the dream was weird because this area is not prone to tsunamis and it wasn't like a big tsunami wave either just knee-high water rushing through.

I get the chills seeing this. We went through this in NJ with storm Sandy in 2012. My Dad lived on a lagoon. He was 96 and in Oct of 2012 when the storm hit. I went down to rescue him as the water was up to the foundation. We went down days later to see the catastrophe. The water line was 3-4 ft on the first floor, and this was a cape cod on a foundation. He stayed with me at my house in central Jersey. My Dad passed 4 months later as his health went downhill after having to leave his castle. The house is gone!

This was not a direct hit, yet they predicted a 5 to 8ft storm surge in that area. What a surprise, most first floor areas were affected. Why people would stay on an island when they predict a 5 to 8ft storm surge, is just crazy. So blame the authorities for miscalculating the storm surge, unbelieveable. Casualties happen when PEOPLE DO NOT LEAVE.

Thank goodness these are concrete homes which are rarely being built nowadays. They are salvageable. Hopefully they had flood insurance. So sorry for your losses, sir.. I also live in Pinellas County. I was so freaked out that I spent an entire day packing up keepsakes and valuables and took them to a storage unit. My mobile home community ended up suffering very little damage. There is a very fickle aspect to hurricanes.

I'm in shock - my mom sentme this video becausewe were curious after MIlton, as our family has loved Treasure Island for vacation for almost 60 years. That this was Helene... wow, I thought it went further north, but as he said, it was the storm surge and not the winds or rain. Now with Milton... I don't know if my uncle and kids and grandkids will make it down next year, but whenever they do, it will be very different, I'm sure. But, as he said, the people are safe. If you read this far, I even wrote an ebook during the lockdown set in Treasure Island, "Hidden Treasure - A Girl's Story of Faith and Baseball in an Alternate Baseball HIstory. Might find time to make it a print book someday here now and buy a few to donate if there's charity auctions or something, I'm not sure. (The White Sox move to Tampa in '89 as they almost did in our history.) I wish there was more we could do to help. My church does have a fund being raised to support victims of the hurricanes, I will be giving to that.

I pray that the Cat.5 be reduced to a Cat. 1 or just a storm. People please get out of the path of a Cat. 5. You will be blown to pieces. These board houses cannot withstand such wind. I would suggest that America put pride through the door revisit their building code and use concrete blocks and steel to build housing which will be in the hurricane-affected areas. Jamaica could be of help to train American board house builders to become masters in building houses using block and steel. I would also recommend that houses should not be less than two stories or levels. Board houses cannot survive a Cat. 5 so run for your lives from Florida. Milton is dangerous if it hits Florida at a Cat. 4 or Cat. 5.
