How to pot dioscorea elephantipes seedlings!

- Dioscorea elephantipes seedlings (and other dioscorea seedlings) usually don't need to be repotted until their first year. I decided to repot some of mine at the six month mark because I wasn't noticing any growth.
If you already have these seedlings, know they can be prone to overwatering. We'll see if I repotted too soon, but judging by some of my other seedlings in better soil, I think I did the right thing!

I was happy to see the caudex on the plant with 1 leaf! Nice one. I have some one leafers. I'll be very happy if they look like that!
Ah yes I find they stay one leaf for awhile and then start putting out more. That one leaf might even yellow and die but have faith!
@@HaniyaRae Thank you! That makes me feel better
So cute!!! Baby desert potatoes 💚
i knoooww! potato farming haha
great video, thanks for sharing the tips 👍👏😊
Thanks so much for watching! I should probably do an update soon, these guys are growing quite a bit!
Thank you for posting!
Thanks so much for watching! Let me know if you need any help ha!
@@HaniyaRae since you asked...I currently have mine germinating in a seed tray. Do you have any recommendations on how tall/big I should let them get before moving them into individual pots?
@@skyebeckley6892 honestly if they have enough space and seem happy in there, I'd just leave them! I waited 6 months; I think unusual seeds says to wait a year. They should be about the size of a coin or a bit bigger, if you can wait for that!
@@HaniyaRae Great! Thanks so much!
Okay but I think we can all agree this makeup look is poppin'💯💯💯🔥 insane how quickly they start growing their caudex eh!
hahaha thanks! and yeah, dioscorea have been the most fascinating caudex plants for me to watch as of yet!
Nice vid. Good reminder for me to repot my seedlings, as well. May try one or two in sphagnum moss for an experiment and keep others in soil. Hope yours keep growing well. Curious, how long do you think it will take to get to a golf ball size?
I'd say 1.5 to 2 years for golfball size, depending on conditions? That's interesting about sphagnum moss! I just put a bunch of d. sylvatica in perlite to see what happens. Thanks! let me know how your experiment goes
@@HaniyaRae experimenting is the fun part. Will let you know.
Your videos have been so helpful! I’ve now got 6 baby elephantipes that have sprouted one very small leaf each ☺️ Mine are in a double cup dome situation and have sprouted in a mixture of sand, coir and perlite. The caudex itself is still light green and very small. Not sure what to do next 😆 when to I remove the dome and reduce humidity? Do you spray with any nutrients? superthrive or starter feed for instance?
I'm so glad you like them! I'd wait for at least a couple of leaves to remove them completely from humidity and let them keep growing. I think you can add nutrients or any succulent fertilizer. You can also let them have some fresh air for a little bit each day to acclimate them once they're bigger :) hope that helps!
Haniya - how are your Dioscorea E youngns doing? I think my 10 months old guys are in dormancy and want to move them out of their community pot. Any tips or experience with moving dormant caudiforms? I've got 3 from this batch - two of them have definitely slowly transitioned into pale green > yellow > tan > brown. Caudex is firm and shiny. I'd love your input!
Interesting! I know my adenia are dormant, but my dioscorea elephantipes are growing again. But I do think you can move them when dormant, sort of like a bulb. I think you just want to make sure that the dirt around the caudex and the new dirt you put in are both still loose for root growth
@@HaniyaRae - I'm going to try to tackle this on the weekend! These are the first things I planted when I got into this and I'll definitely be doing it nervously :-)
Hey there! I made an update haha ruclips.net/video/HSQggeKz_hk/видео.html
