@Ray Donovn exactly. Tom Brady can manipulate his teams TOP by playing well and keeping the ball. And there’s not one offensive possession where he doesn’t touch the ball or make the decision of where to go with it. A basketball player is timed, 24 seconds. They can’t manipulate TOP. And the entire game other ppl will be making offensive decisions whether he runs point or not. They’ll decide to shoot, pass or dribble.
And Bball players play maybe 38-40 mins a in the playoffs and using LeBron as an example his team normally gets outscored that entire time he’s sitting.

Lots of interceptions, not really a lot of touchdowns, , not a high completion percentage, decent running stats but nothing special. I must be missing something. He won an MVP in 87 and looking at the results and both Jerry Rice and Montana should have run laps around him. Maybe some of you can help me out with some extra context that I'm clearly missing.

You're also forgetting to mention the glaring facts that QBs were not protected back then. They would get their caps knocked off just like any other player. Defense back in those days were much better and more intense as they were allowed to do so much more. They could actually touch the player without a flag being called. Today's game is completely different. Today's game is an offensive league. Please go watch NFL films, and you will see what real football was and what it isn't today. Those guys were actual gladiators, and it was much harder to be a great QB back then.

The thing with Elway is that he was saddled with the wrong head coach for his first decade in the NFL. Dan "3-yards-and-a-cloud-of-dust" Reeves had no clue how to design an offense to Elway's strengths. Elway's talent was wasted on Reeves.
There's a reason why Bill Walsh wanted to trade Montana in early 1983 for the rights to draft Elway. That's not a typo either, you can look that fact up. Now imagine Elway on the 1983-89 49ers... holy shitballs..... that would've been INSANE.
Also, Elway literally dragged the 1986, 1987 and 1989 Broncos to super bowls. Then he got stomped because the NFC in the '80s was a MONSTER. The '86 Giants were ridiculous (Parcells, Belichick, L.T. and that defense... forget about it). The '89 49ers were even MORE insane.
Like every HOF QB, Elway just needed some help to win a SB or two. And he finally got it in the mid '90s.

Gotta calm down a bit. You can compare Mahomes and Brady to each other in years they both played, but it's really hard to compare QBs from different generations. Brady began in an era where a 1.5:1 TD/INT ratio and 3,000 passing yards was a solid year, whereas now that's not even a good year for a rookie. You especially can't make the argument that Mahomes is anywhere near Montana yet...if you are going to compare these guys, you first have to look at their peers. How much better was Montana than the other elite QBs at the times vs how much better is Mahomes vs his current peers (which he is clearly the best atm)...It's this prisoner of the moment mindset that has left guys like Dan Marino in the dust for best regular season QB. People seem to forget that he was putting up stats that nearly DOUBLED other starters numbers - that would be the equivalent to Mahomes throwing for 7,500 yrds and 65+ tds.

Better as in talent-wise? Yeah maybe. But that’s not how qbs are judged. Manning was labeled as “the guy who couldn’t get it done” since he was at Tennessee. He was a great qb. But at this point, “better than Brady” is laughable.
