The Gamecube was the first console I ever owned. I played Double Dash until I had a gold trophy on literally everything.

The gun texture in Super Smash Brothers Melee can also be found on Peach's forward special when it uses the golf stick and has been a little known fact for years now thanks to the really dedicated competitive community having dissected it to hell and back.

I was hoping they'd go into what inspirations Wind Waker did have if not European. The houses on Outset and other islands are clearly Polynesian style and there's a clear Incan inspiration for Gohdan but I don't know much more than that. Honestly Wind Waker isn't a game I thought of as being very non-European in the first place, considering that you ride around in a Viking-style boat to a soundtrack the devs themselves said came from Irish music.
I think they mean the artstyle and aesthetic being more ''anime'' inspired, specifically Studio Ghibli movies or that Miyazaki movie with the pirate cat.

I thought the exact same thing. The dust particles remind me of Hercules which is obviously Greek. If they really wanted to avoid European references, they failed. Still, they made an amazing game and I wouldn’t change it.
It may have just been a starting point. Art often begins with a certain inspiration and then ends up somewhere entirely different, especially with collaborations on a large scale.
@@SakuraAvalon I know, hence my air quotes around anime style, people freaked out about the style for WW but then praised it for BOTW. But you can definitely trace some of Toei animations oldschool movies in the artstyle and character design of WW.

Baten Kaitos had such a fun gimmick to the card based battle system and always made it fun to play.
Yep. Can't want for the HD remakes. Shame Origins was such a great game but came out so late in the Cube life cycle that no one played it.

I remember watching that race with my brother on tv, and is was crazy when he did that! Absolutely insane, literally balls the to wall move. Never expected to see it pop up in a DYKG video, a surprise to be sure, but a welcome one!
I love how many of these are just out there already in interviews but because most people don't speak japanese they go unknown.
Just something funny to point out: the example of "skinning" they had around 11:47 is actually an example of weight painting, where a 3d mesh is given control weight data from its skeleton, either automatically or manually.

Dang, thank you! I've always wondered what those statues in Super Monkey Ball's Expert's 41-50 were, seriously since I was a kid. Legit was bothering me, not finding any info about it. I've never felt so grateful for actually watching an entire 20 min video.

I agree! I wouldn't mind seeing Sega bring Billy and his friends back. The had cool character and monster designs, and the multiplayer was lots of crazy fun!

@@Weatherman4Eva He has a reputation, practically wrecks another driver every single race at this point. And this is at a time where drivers are getting injured a lot more easily from wrecks that used to not be very dangerous.
Ross junks good race cars and puts other drivers in danger, and he isn't *reeeeally* sorry about it.
As someone who doesn't even like NASCAR, when it showed up on my feeds I was still impressed AF by it.
I think anyone who has been in a car at any point can understand how impressive and scary it is.

The Metroid Prime translation error reminds of me playing Ogre Battle 64 as a kid. I don't remember that game at all, but I entered a random town somewhat later in the game, and was expecting some quick dialogue skit as you often get. I did get a dialogue skit, but... it was totally in Japanese. I re-entered the town, but could never repeat it. This was on the US version

They used the gun sprite because it looked good and they had it laying around. There are a lot of times in lighting that you use a wrong/random image because it looks good enough and takes infinitely less effort.
really doesnt matter for n64, but even in modern games, unless your doing realistic reflections/lighting then often times a random image wwith somewhat similar features (a forest is rectangles, a gun is rectangles) then itll probably look fine. I think there was an instance of an image of actual dog poop being used in a spongebob game for a lamp or something like that.
sometimes you just click a few buttons and see what stuff looks like and it just works well enough ya dont put in effort.
As someone who's studying 3D modeling and animation, this is extremely accurate and probably was exactly what happened.
Now, onto the final question: _where does this texture come from?_
this is pretty much correct, yes.
The only reason fans think this is even remotely interesting because they look at the image and go "LOL GUN HAHAHA FUNNY", but a developer absolutely doesn't think like that. To them it is 100% just a random asset. It really shows a clear divide of thinking between how a creator sees things and how an audience does.

The GameCube was the first console I’d ever had since I was about 5 when it came out. Mario sunshine and the wind water are the reasons why Mario and Zelda are 2 of my most favorite franchises.
Man I loved the GC so much. That nintendo summer vibes. Tales of symphonia. Samua in 3D. So iconic.

the only thing more i know about that gun sprite in Plum's trophy texture data is that it is reused in Brawl for possibly the same purpose as its in Peach's texture map albeit the sprite is altered in size a little.

Almost jumped out of my seat when he mentioned Ross Chastain, this was the coolest thing to happen to NASCAR in the last decade or so, and I'm glad its popping up here.
I forget how much I miss the GameCube being a young teen when I got it. So much of my nostalgia lies with the SNES and 64 but god what a console
This video made me unreasonably nostalgic for playing my Gamecube when I was on the cusp of becoming a teenager.
I think the flood thing is a cool attention to detail. Flood, I imagine, isn’t light, so it causes damage when jumping long distances? Idk
God I wish Billy Hatcher got more legacy recognition and references, or even a revival/remaster someday. Such an underrated game.

The gun image is also used on the reflection of peach’s golf club and I believe frying pan. I assume the dev team just liked the specific texture of that gun stretched
Chastain, doing the video game move of huggy in the wall in real life was beautiful. It was wonderful to see a gamer bring some thing from our gaming life into the regular day today experience.
Fuck yeah NASCAR mention on DYKG I feel represented.
Also it was dubbed the "Hail Melon" moreso than a "wall ride." His main family sponsor is a watermelon farm.

Ross Chastain is the most exciting driver in NASCAR right now, every weekend the headline is what Ross Chastain did, he's an aggressive driver and he gives 110% every lap.
That “(new info)” was a good choice I already know basically every trivia fact there is to know with Nintendo
for the gun in melee, i would guess that the texture was originally a stock icon for a cut character, and either they didn't want the texture to go to waste or the texture was already being used for the club when the character was cut
I was thinking it was an icon sprite for a shooter like Resident Evil.

Game Cube has the best titles of all time in my opinion.
That’s pretty much how I feel. Like in how the SNES perfected 8 bit concepts and added to them with high fidelity graphics, the GameCube took the first 3D try for many concepts and ironed them out to make them even better, and look good while doing it. I think every Nintendo franchise that has an entry on the GameCube - the GameCube entry is my favorite in the series.

Probably not. Development on a character doesn't begin before a licensing agreement is made

Monkey ball was imo one of the best games ever on the cube.. i probably played that game the most..
I owned atleast most of the games in this video.. except for nascar and baiten and that hatcher game just before monkeyball.
If I recall right, there is a similar gun sprite used in Peach's golf club (or was it her frying pan?) used in her forward smash as well

I mainly commented because I don't recall much pre-amble or opinion mixed into these videos in the past. Usually they just present the facts and if you find the topic boring or exciting it doesn't matter to them.

Still my favorite console ever..just the sheer amount of hours i've put into the Gamecube completely trumps my time with any other console
The Baten Kaitos games are absolutely amazing, I usually don't enjoy card-based systems but the way they're done is masterful and very fun to execute, especially in Origins. It takes a bit of getting used to, but they are so much fun. I highly recommend for any rpg fans who haven't played them yet.

The machine gun probably has no meaning nor reference to anything Nintendo related.
As a photoshopper myself, I've used countless of stretched out images to give a reflection or change the color of an image appropriately to give a more natural look to an image.
Most plausible answer, developers looked at a similar image and adjusted the colors and saved time by stretching an image instead of having to do it themselves which most likely wouldn't have come out as natural.
Probably don't bother in trying to make sense or think it's an Easter egg. It's just to save time since stretching an image is ALOT easier and faster than having to color it themselves. Specially with 300 trophies to render.

Chastain's move at Martinsville wasn't actually the first time it was done as Kyle Larson tried it the year prior. It's just that it worked with Chastain while Larson ended up crashing into the back of Denny Hamlin
