We appreciate all your support over the past year. Thanks for watching 🙌
Thank you all so much for your hard work! Your videos are some of my favorites to watch! ♡

Didn't know Satoshi was a Pokemon, honestly really big discovery surprised you didn't talk more about it tbh.
@@4tado I think you're overestimating just how "groundbreaking" a video game fact can be.
Really awesome work by everyone, I have been appreciating all the Metroid love the most!
Lots of great research last year. Keep it up!
I love how DYKG went from a fairly typical channel about fun facts and trivia to full blown investigative journalism over the past few years. Awesome work
Investigative journalism for our childhood memories.
They're doing better journalism than kotaku. That's for sure.
Didn't they start off with posting *Fun Fact* images online.
@@miguelmartinez6968 yes, with the same border on either side.
I read DYKG as donkey Kong gaming haha
You guys are singlehandedly keeping the history of video games and their development alive. I wonder how many of these facts and stories would have been lost to time if you hadn't done all this work to uncover it. Having records of all this stuff only gets more important as time goes on, and you guys just keep getting better at it!
The archeological work you're doing lately is invaluable. Thank you!
2:40 it’s an “unsigned” 16-bit number, not an “unassigned” one. Signed means that one of the bits is dedicated for signing, as in a positive or negative sign
Exactly what I thought. An _unassigned_ number would, I believe, be the same as an uninitialized variable, i.e. a variable with no defined value.
Bothered I didn’t catch that, good for you!
Didn't catch that in the VO. Script and CC subtitles both say "unsigned".
@@DidYouKnowGamin Don't feel too bad mate. Those slip-ups can happen. Great video!
That one hell of a detail catch

Ah yes, my favorite Pokémon, Satoshi Tajiri.
That Zelda tactics game would have been so good. The story alone would have carried it. That ending too omg. When it was told i had a big smile lol. Imo they missed a huge opportunity. Sadge.
15:21 this painted chick story got to me, humans are truly terrible beings
Yeah it’s horrible to also think people looking back on it don’t even think it’s bad and just nostalgia and an annoyance.
“People just threw them out once they weren’t cute anymore.” And that’s not horrible to you dude???
Heroes of Hyrule sounds like one of the best games to never exist.
19:30 lol this almost made me spit out my coffee
Y'all did some amazing work in 2022. I'm looking forward to more of this kind of stuff in 2023!
Small nitpick: at 2:41, it should be 'unsigned', not 'unassigned' - an 'unsigned' number is a number without a sign (plus/minus). A 'signed' number can store a sign, but needs to use one bit for that, so the number of bits available to store the number itself is reduced. In a 16-bit signed integer, you can store values from -32768 to 32767, while a 16-bit unsigned integer stores numbers from 0 to 65535. Both can represent the same amount of numbers, but the ranges are different.
Pretty cool to see the channel expanding in this way
The idea that Nintendo has no idea what a bounty hunter is has to be pretty funny.
They could totally reskin that tactics game as ANYTHING else and it would have been a hit back then. No idea why Nintendo shot it down.
Honestly I would play that game if it existed.
It's really disappointing, after loving Metroid and Samus for so long, to know that she was never intended by Nintendo to be the badass bounty hunter I've always viewed her as.
Nintendo "Samus is a bounty hunter"
Also Nintendo "what's a bounty hunter?"
Nice Mighty Gunvolt Burst music in the opening, underrated indie gem
Every year there is something awesome to discover like a closer look at Mario kart xl
That surprises me that the earlier Metroid games didn't sell as well, they play kind of like Mega Man, Castlevania, or any other popular action-adventure platformer from the 8 bit/ 16 bit eras
Heroes of Hyrule sounds like a great game.
Holy shit I would play the fuck out of heroes of hyrule. Such a shame it was never made.
Nintendo: Bounty Hunters are heroes and love justice right?
Retro: ... No
Nintendo: You're wrong, we're right
Super curious what the full story is behind Project X. The idea I think a ton or even most Zelda fans would really be behind, more lore about things inside the Zelda universe. We got Skyward Sword the "origin." We got BotW and learn about the Sheikah Monks. A Sheikah story focused on the crafting of the Master Sword would have been awesome
*Have you heard of the critically-acclaimed MMORPG FINAL FANTASY XIV ?*
*With an expanded Free Trial which you can play through the entirety of A Realm Reborn,*
*and the Heavensward expansion up to level 60 for free with no restrictions on playtime.*
Amazing work guys, thank you
aint no way we were deprived of Heroes of Hyrule T^T
No wonder Gen 3 is the best gen. They broke the mold and decided to not be restricted by trivial marketing
I loved tactics advance. Devoured that game in high school. I would have LOVED Heroes of Hyrule.
The biggest discovery is that God of War Ragnarok sucks ass.
The Zelda trpg sounds like it would have been a great game. I think Nintendo only rejected it because it would have had a weird impact on the Zelda canon, even though they don't seem to care that much themselves lol
Omg an open world Samus game Woulda been amazing
The game corner Music from Pokémon silver. ❤
That Tactics Zelda game sound like it could be amazing if they nailed the combat. The characters are heroes are cool, the story is interesting and it uses Zelda items and themes very well. The only real downside is that it's a spinoff that doesn't feature Link or Zelda.
Obstagoon is gene Simmons and you can’t change my mind
Samus is more of a good mercenary than a bounty hunter
Best channel.
I think the main reason why "Heroes of Hyrule" was quickly shut down is because Nintendo didn't want to be reminded of Zelda CD-i...
Heroes of hyrule legit sounded fire
I cannot believe Nintendo shot down Heroes of Hyrule but greenlit Hyrule Warriors. What the hell?
15:48 mission failed buddy
I wish they tried that concept today
The actual biggest discovery was finding out Nintendo flagged your Zelda history video
Here's a cool pitch for Game Freak and Nintendo, a traditional Pokemon game that harkens back to the beginning of development. I remember seeing such wonderful concept art of Pokemon, the characters and the world. What if that early art was used to as the graphics style of this new retro Pokemon game? A cel-shaded game that's akin to Paper Mario, 3-D but also 2-D.
Maybe work in some of those concepts and designs that were left on the cutting room floor as well?
Calling Samus a bounty hunter for years without even knowing what a bounty hunter is must be the most Nintendo thing I've heard in a long time.
To be fair, Nintendo wasn't exactly wrong. There's a lot of movies that have "loveable bounty hunter" type characters, and often they're portrayed more as adventurers with a checkered past than actual ruthless hunters. So in this case it's correct, even though Nintendo wasn't aware of the original meaning of a bounty hunter.
It's kind of like samurai. A lot of english people see samurai as just wandering adventurers that defend the weak like superheroes, not members of the government enforcing contracts and stuff. Cowboys, ninjas, and knights are the same way. Their actual jobs kind of lose all association and they become adventurers of whatever place or time they come from.
And thinking of her as an "altruistic" & "motherly" adventurer? Jesus christ Nintendo... you can still be "for everyone/family friendly" while also not being COMPLETELY childish & silly 😅
Came here to post this comment 🤣
@@riverdays364 Yeah think Nintendo was thinking something more like Din Djarin from the Mandalorian, rather than Boba Fett. Adventurer and bounty hunter tend to have a lot of overlap in fantasy anyway. I don't really see how Samus's heart of gold nature necessarily conflicts with being a bounty hunter, and it's probably more so the tone they were putting forth that probably got it rejected. Think she's suppose to come off more like a freelance space cop than a hired killer.
If you ask me, Heroes of Hyrule is the biggest discovery and probably the greatest loss, that game just seemed incredible
There would've been uproar over Link being able to talk, though. Way too risky change.
I don't even play Zelda and I agree
@@NetConsole When was it ever said that Link would've talked he was barely even in the game concept cause he's not the main character and seemingly only showed up for the beginning and ending of the story as the shop keeper so Link could've easily never spoken a single word.
@@theninjamaster67 It's heavily implied...
@@NetConsole Implication isn't fact Becka!
That entire 'Nintendo does not know what a bounty hunter is' section... Explains so, so much.
Considering how Other M followed it and panned out, it's crystal clear they always had no idea why or how Metroid was liked.
@@QwixLF The thing is Other M has pretty damn brutal combat. You shove the canon into monsters throats, watch Ridly get cut up and bloody, explode the Queen Metroid from the inside. They clearly knew that Samus was a strong warrior as well as being motherly
I mean do you know why they call him DONKEY kong?
@@QwixLF I mean what kind of Bounty Hunting did you ever do in any Metroid game other than maybe Hunters? And even in that game its also a stretch. It's like calling Mario a plumber but there's no actual plumbing in any of the Mario games.

DYKG went from: "did you know this little curious fact that you might have not heard but still some people already know?"
To: we are resurrecting death devs to interview them, as well as unearthing and translating ancient Nintendo scrolls written on sumerian to uncover histories nobody ever knew!
...And I love it. Kudos to all the DYKG team for making tremendous efforts translating, interviewing and fighting video takedowns to bring to us all of the amazing stories and secrets!
Thanks Alex :)
I see RUclips gives us the same recommendations lol
@L Same for Spanish speaking people. I reached DYKG to offer my translation skills to translate into spanish all the marvelous videos they have made so far so people in my region know all this precious information or at least, provide Spanish subtitles. DYKGs marvelous work deserves to be spread more and more.
That entire 'Painted Chick' thing is super upsetting D: Can't believe people actually just threw them away
I can't speak for anywhere else, but it was a very common thing in my country (3rd world latin american country). Not excusing this as it's clearly animal abuse in many measures, but as a child it was hard to develop any sense of accountability if even your parents encouraged such behavior. As an adult I have noticed it has decreased in most metropolitan areas, but if you take a drive around more rural areas, it still pops up from time to time. Sad really; we have a long way to go as a species still.
Never heard of it till now. Crazy
It really is similar to when kids get a goldfish and they often just treat it poorly and it dies early especially when they forget it exists after the emotional high of obtaining it is over
Not cleaning the bowl, trying to "pet it", trying to "bathe" it, not feeding it enough, etc
This is a failure in parenting if anything
Teach kids that animal lives are still lives.
A family member of mine told the same story did happen, back when I was very young to remember.
You never heard of people buying baby gators to do the same thing?
Nintendo calling Samus a bounty hunter and then refusing to let her be one is funny. It's as if they just called her that since it sounded super cool 🤣🤣
i wonder if this is just somethign lost in translation?
retro is a US company. If the whole bounty hunter thing is just something made up in localization when the first metroid came out that stuck around but the big wigs at nintendo japan never knew about, that would explain a lot.
@SophiaLilithUwU I heard once that the term may have a different meaning in Japan? Take it with a grain of salt bc this is just hearsay (which my brain may have fabricated by putting random info in a blender, has happened to me before), but I think I once saw someone say that in Japan "bounty hunter" is understood differently. Don't remember *how* exactly they claimed the term to be different, though.
Yeah but Mario is supposed to be a plumber, what plumbing has Mario actually done in the last 30+ years? Clearly this is a US localization thing.
@Kevin from Sales there was him and Luigi fixing the clear pipe at the very beginning of 3D World, but other than that I can't think of any instances of him actually doing his job on screen.
@@kevinfromsales9445 I'm pretty sure the original Mario Bros game (not to be confused with Super Mario Bros) mainly involved Mario and Luigi taking down turtles and crabs in the sewer and had more to do with him being a plumber.
But I guess ever since Mario became Super Mario he gave up being a plumber in favor of saving princesses.
Heroes of Hyrole sounds really freaking amazing!
Right? Like, can we get that game…like now pls.
Couldn't agree more!
The story with the book, reading and collecting pages and the late reveal are awesome. It would probably be my favorite Zelda related story.
Retro Studios is an amazing studio and its so sad that many of their awesome pitches never made it into real products.
The thing that turned my head the most was that, only 2 years after wind waker, the one Rito character from the official pitch drawings basically just looks like she'd have fit right into breath of the wild. In fact, so does the Zora character (who himself is fairly different looking than the twilight princess Zora from 2006). Makes me wonder if it's just a coincidence, or if Retro's concept art actually managed to stay in the back of Nintendo staffs' heads all those years later while they were developing breath of the wild. Probably a coincidence, but man would it be cool if it wasn't.
What an absolute waste of good concept :( those character art are PHENOMENAL.
Nintendo: What's a bounty hunter?!?? That's crazy!
Also Nintendo: Hey, remember the time when we bought baby chicks and threw them out as kids? Hahah, good times!!
Nobody at Nintendo watched Cowboy Bebop? I can’t believe that.

14:53 That's ironic sense people seem to like Blaziken a lot.
Yeah, at least in my opinion Blaziken ended up looking cool rather than ugly. And with Pokémon, especially starters, people generally want creatures that grow to look cool and/or powerful.

Someone should definitely make a Heroes of Hyrule-like game, without the Zelda overlay if necessary. It just sounds so cool.
Even better, someone should make a spoof game just to stick it to Nintendo. By which I mean have the main characters have really obvious names, like the heroes be Dink, Lunar the Moron, Teriph the Mito, and Zrel the Kora... the "Book of Fanon," etcetera. I'm just spitballing here, Seriph could just as easily be named "Sans" although a different company might take umbrage with that name.
Seriously, this sounds like it could be an incredible game that's pretty unique and fun. Even stripping out the Zelda elements wouldn't hurt it much and an indie developer could easily swap the characters and story for their own ideas and be great.
Well why people make fan games using Nintendo ip because people will gathering fast than make the original ip. You need influencer if you make original ip to fight in crowded market and gains audience.
@@macdee010 But making a fan-game with Nintendo IP is a bad idea in this case, as they already shot this down. There are plenty of indie developers who could make a game like this. One only needs to make a very good, solid game, that can stand its own between the buggy, DLC-ridden triple A games that get released at the same time.
@@Kobolds_in_a_trenchcoat The story itself doesn't even need the Zelda elements, so if one could create fun new characters they could keep the story as is, no problem! Just.. without the Zelda bits :P
Between DYKG and MMAonpoint this year has been the year for me “Wait you can just reach out with questions and real people might answer!?”
Yeah, journalism is so messed up lately that we tend to forget it can be done well.

@@INRamos13 Journalism has been doing great things this entire time. Don't let shitty US media cloud that.
This new style of DYKG has made the channel so much better. It's most exciting the show has been since it first started, maybe more so since you guys are really going into the specifics of stuff
It's been truly refreshing. The fact that DYKG is regularly able to uncover substantial information that no one else even knew about is so exciting. You see a video drop about a cancelled project or unknown development history and you know it's going to be something fascinating. And the way they're able to just casually say "we had this translated" or "we asked this developer for details" in their other videos is so cool.
You guys have been doing an incredible job digging up all this stuff. Thank you so much! 😊
When you run out of things to learn about the living, you become an archeologist. 😎
Thanks Von :)
Blaziken is awesome, they failed doing the thing they had in mind. As someone who has pet chickens, it feels exactly like watching a chick grow: It starts as really cute, then it gets to an awkward teenager stage, then it becomes this cool-looking animal with beautiful feathers and sharp, fierce talons and beak that's your best friend and will stick by your side forever. Not ugly or disappointing at all.
I remember first seeing you guys on Facebook years ago. All these years and I think 2022 was y’all’s best one yet. I love the content and I hope you guys keep striving to find new and original information about these games
The whole way through that part on Satoshi Tajiri’s supposed autism, I was thinking of that XKCD “Citogenesis” cartoon, which happens to be my favourite. I was super delighted that you actually showed it. Everyone (particularly journalists and researchers) should read it. So many many “Internet facts” can be attributed to citogenesis, and it’s rare that journalists actually bother to dig as deep as you did. Respect due.
This is also because the writer is stupid for real. A myspace page really ? FROM A JAPANESE GAME DEV ? Anyone would have realized how fucking dumb this is.
What is Citogenesis? (And what was the invisible reply?)
Clearly a lost in translation issue if Nintendo thought a Bounty Hunter was simply an Adventurer. Maybe they thought it meant Treasure Hunter?
is samus even called a bounty hunter in the original japanse script? It its something a translation team made up that would explain a lot.
@@SophiaLilithUwU Dunno, but the original Metroid manual says, "The Federation Bureau and the Federation Police called together warriors known for their great courage and sent them to do battle with the pirates. These great warriors were called "space hunters." They received large rewards when they captured pirates, and made their living as space bounty hunters"
So even if you call them "space hunters" but Samus has always worked as freelancer to capture pirates and bring them to law enforcement departments in exchange for rewards then by definition she's been a bounty hunter since day one.
What’s odd about the Pokémon fact being over 60k versions is that I initially heard that rumor in school in 1996, but quickly dispelled it once I actually got my hands on the card. It’s so interesting to see today what was true ca what was gobbledygook. Major props for the hard work y’all do-I’ve been gaming since the late 80’s and the video game industry is an industry that tends to have a lot of misinformation. To paraphrase Disney’s Pocahontas, I learn things I never knew I never knew.
Pokemon is for babies
Heroes of Hyrule would've been such a dope game. The story seems so tight, and the tactics type gameplay is one of my favorite type of games 👌🏻
Honestly the whole bit about Blaziken being ugly is really funny in hindsight when you consider how uh..."liked" it is within the fanbase
the nintendo not knowing what a bounty hunter is is funnier now because doing missions for money is explicitly referenced in dread's opening
So... am I the only one who felt rubbed the wrong way about the painted chicks thing?
Like... it's already animal abuse painting these birds, with no doubt dyes that are bad for their health.
And then these rotten kids throw them away? Hell, if I got one as a kid. I would have tried raising it, even after it grew up.... And I was a shit child.
Also... can I just say how badly Blaziken's intention failed hard?
It's a fan favorite. Not to mention that a lot of furries want to.... You know what....
It's similar to people who buy baby turtles or alligators only to ditch them when they get to big. And then that causes horrible ecological damage from introducing them into an environment not made for them.
Yeah it’s animal abuse and animal neglect. It’s one of those things that you’d imagine someone like that dev would look back on with disgust but it sounds more neutral like nostalgic even. And not with obvious disgust and discomfort for the lack of empathy and cruelty. How horrific.
6:15 how on earth can you create a game that is simpler than whack a mole 😭🤣😭
This channel is definitely up there on my list if someone asks me what the ideal RUclips channel should be. Great stuff
So Samus was viewed more like Din Djarin over Boba Fett to Nintendo's eyes.
I suppose the introduction of pre-evolved/egg Pokémon in Gen 2 did sort of contribute to thinking that the designs were starting to become "too babyish" (always thought Lugia and Scizor were pretty cool though), but their efforts to want to give Pokémon more of an edge again did indeed result in us getting some of the most awesome looking new legendaries ever with Groudon and Rayquaza, so it was all well and good in the end. Some of those new Pokémon still kept me following the franchise during Gen 3 even with the lack of older Pokémon in the games at first.
Though I have to say, if you had been watching the original series of the anime back in the day when Misty's Togepi first appeared then you would remember what a big deal this baby Pokémon was at the time, since this was still before Gold & Silver came out and fans knew what a lot of the next Pokémon of Gen 2 were going to be, so there was quite a bit of intrigue as to what kind of Pokémon Togepi was that even the anime played up on. Of course that was then, and I'm sure by now nobody really cares as much about Togepi anymore aside from its significance with the anime.
I do think it's unfortunate that they don't make pokemon as simple anymore. The first 2 gens were really iconic, and instantly recognisable. Newer gens I wouldn't be able to tell some stuff apart from a digimon
you guys are awesome! while everyone out there are making "news" citing random tweets you guys are doing actual journalism, love your work!
Yeah Kotaku's journalistic integrity 404 not found ❌
It's unfortunate that some of us miss videos because of bogus takedowns by large companies. Any word on getting that one re-uploaded?
Heroes of Hyrule you mean? It's back up.
Heroes of Hyrule would have been amazing. Looks like it was very well thougt out and planned.
Being well-planned doesn't mean it would've been guaranteed to be good.
I don't see a lot of people being interested in a game where Link is a side character and has to be rescued by random new characters.
Sure, plenty of fans SAY they want something different, but every time a game connected to LoZ actually did buck the formula, other than BotW, it went really poorly.
@mattpace1026 I don't really super like the link connection in it myself but the gameplay, story, and overall concept seem great. Honestly, I think that if someone made the game but without specific Zelda references, and distributed it on steam, it would probably do well. It probably wouldn't be the best selling game ever or the highest rated indie or anything but I don't think it would do poorly or suck.
@@mattpace1026 hyrule warriors did pretty well and was mostly side characters
@@niceveraert1000 That game did well because of nostalgia-though I don't claim it's a bad game. Also, I did say most, not all.
@@mattpace1026 Cadence of Hyrule was good. I mean from everything we've seen I think the general consensus is that this game does sound pretty good. obviously we'd never know, but still. Aren't there like barely and zelda games that break the formula anyway? There's only a handful I can think of and most have been received well to my knowledge.
Also, you did say "every game game besides BotW", lol
30:41 omg its so sad nintendo passed on all of these, it really does feel like retro lit the intial spark that would become botw's story

I think Nintendo didn't want a Zelda game where Link is not the main character. Or they could have been working on a Zelda title, and didn't want to compete against themselves.
hmm
Okay so can we all agree that Heroes of Hyrule sounds fucking rad?
I would love for that game to be real, it sounds like one of those games today that people still talk about and remember fondly, bugging Nintendo daily for a remaster or sequel and the like. I can even see it planted firmly in many "Top 20 DS Games Of All Time" lists, just solely based on the pitch shown in this video.
If Retro were granted the green light and were able to fully realise the potential of this pitch, then we could have had something really special on our hands.
what i’m getting from this video is that paul tozour is the goat of gaming investigative journalism
The quality of these videos are honestly top tier. You guys have come a long way, these videos never fail to entertain and educate 😆
Retro just can't catch a break with their Tactics style games, eh? Maybe Nintendo will be open to a game like HoH in the future since Cadence was unique amongst Zelda games and did well. That artwork for the Sheik game looked like something straight out of Metroid though. Pretty cool.
Retro gets access to any IP: how about a tactics game set in this universe?

Next thing you know, we're going to learn Nintendo doesn't really know what the term "mercenary" means. Despite them using that word to describe Fox McCloud all these years.
They’re aware. It’s baked into the story of their past. Theyre outlaws that take on a variety of jobs but refuse to do anything unethical. The group was started by Fox’s father who was a former Air Force pilot.
Would not be surprised one bit. But I'm pretty sure Nintendo isn't the only one that doesn't understand what that term means either, considering the amount of fans wanting it to just stay on rails, and them flying on Arwings the whole time.
The man who defeated nintendo
I'm still so unbelievably salty about the entire story of Heroes of Hyrule because I would have absolutely LOVED that shit
It's not that Nintendo doesn't know what a Bounty Hunter is, it's just that the games features she being heroic instead of bounting, Metroid Zero One even has a pic of her picking bounties in a bar.
Nintendo just not wanting a game being about bounty hunting.
source?
I remember that, Its one of the extras you get with the endings in Zero Mission based on your completion time. It has Samus being a bounty hunter makes some sense (though I think “freelancer” is a better term) because it allows her to not have to follow orders, which she is noted for disliking on many occasions.
@@BamfIamone Sources are Sakamoto saying the games are about her being autruistic hero and one of Zero Mission's secret artworks feature her in a bar picking a bounty reward.

Why are all these devs of long-dead projects so stubborn about revealing any info about it? Did they all have to sign non-disclosure agreements or is there another reason? There's no reason to keep these things a secret
Also- I haven't seen it here yet, so I will mention the clear resemblance to Slenderman with the collectible pages summoning a destructive entity. The rest is so incredibly interesting. Especially the part about Tajiri's autism, with how hard to prove it is due to the extreme prejudice against it in many countries. As someone with it, who the fuck cares?
