I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, I start every Sunday morning with a JP video!!!! Thank you again for everything do, my friend!!! I love it!!!
I think you're your own worst critic dude. I don't see any problems with that final handle. That's a beautiful knife that anyone should be happy to get.
@@JPsBladeworksas tough as that can be, it’s nice to have someone that’s not a ‘yes man’ that can help push you to keep getting better. Those of us like me, who have no experience in this, never see any flaws. Just an extremely satisfying video!
Stellar work forging the tip of that knife! Maybe you do it like that every time, but this time I definitely took notice, and was particularly impressed! Nice!
that turned out AMAZING!!! I just LOVE that all the black speckles have a really thin silver ring around the outside, but all the fill looks almost like static!! I never saw fishhooks turn out like that.... WOW! And the handle just being a simple dark and light really goes with that blade too I personally like the hidden tang technique because there is more opportunity to customize, and change up the handle. Whereas the riveting two pieces of material is fairly limited in that regard. I don't think I've ever seen anyone have more than just two halves riveted together... I guess you could customize make a block out of multiple pieces epoxied together and then cut the whole thing in half lengthwise and then rivet them on... that actually sounds like best way.... you could ever make the two halves sort of interlock through hole in the tang, or overlap through spaces notched into the 'top' of the tang so see the two pieces covering over spots of the metal and you could always make custom rivets too.... So yea, I think you changed my mind on which of these two types of handles I like more.... lol .... oh yea... I emailed someone with a pretty big channel about how he got started sponsors and stuff like that... so hopefully he emails me back and I give you some more info about getting that ball rolling... and please don't think I'm doing this to try to get something out of it, or to scheme or scam anyone.... I just wanna help out... I spend a lot of time on yt and I want to give back to the channels I enjoy, I just don't have a job because I'm taking care of my elderly Mom full time right now.. so I spend my down time on yt and would like to show some appreciation somehow :) So I hope I can help get the ball rolling for ya :)
Hi 👋 there, brother ?!!! It's always exceptional 👌 but if you square up the billet, you don't need to have a cracked edge on your billet, but everything is gorgeous 😍
Just a little tip when using your bandsaw, don’t cut the steel on the flat side. Position the steel vertically and not on the flat side. There is more surface area to cut through the way you cut the end off. Love your work and keep pounding metal! 😊
I want to see someone do a fish hook filet knife, a steel buckshot skinning knife, and a combined fish hook / steel buckshot hunting knife as a set. All with matching handles and sheaths. I would also like to see someone do an untwist Damascus. Twist it, the square it up, cut it into four equal chunks, weld them together, stretch it out and then untwist it.
USE A CHOPSTICK in the hole to pour epoxy into a hidden tang handle. It runs down to the bottom first and you raise the chopstick as it fills. NO BUBBLES!!
@ just in theory. Being high carbon fish hooks would lead me to believe that. They should hold up. But not knowing exact steel leaves reason to question theory. I have had no problems of dulling from any of the 5 I have made and sold
Great vid and beautiful knife. Its also great that you put some of your tools into the despription. Do you mind telling me from where you got your powder?
How does that rasp wheel on the grinder do for you JP? Does it last for you and save you any sander discs? Im curious. Ive thought about them myself. Good looking knife sir. 🤝👍
I'm always curious: why not full-handle "tail"? (Probably it's just me, but i don't trust any joint that not bolt or rivet. And similarily don't trust tails that not as wide as physicaly possible)
Another good video. Couple of hacks I picked up. I have same problem with hidden tang fit ups. I typically get a piece of liner material or brass to cover my top piece of wood now. It's much easier to fit the blade to that than the wood. I just keep it black or whatever color I'm mixing with my epoxy and the fit up is usually very close and the glue will hide the rest. The other hack I picked up was using alcohol to thin out my epoxy when pouring into the hole. It seems to help and the alcohol will dissipate and not affect the hold( it does add curing time though). I guess to be honest I cannot with a shadow of doubt confirm it holds exactly the same as without it , but I've tested it and it seems to be no problem. Do you think you will have any soft spots from the fish hooks? The blade looks amazing but I get concerned when I use something that I don't know it's hardenability. Look forward to your content, keep up the good work.
Thanks for the tips. Im not sure exactly on the hardness of the fish hooks myself but the steel did darken up quite a bit and that usually happens when i have some good steel. But that is just a hunch with 0 proof to back it up.
I'm going to try my first canister soon. Going with fishhooks b/c I like the look, and that seems like a pretty inexpensive option. Still need to buy my powder. Is there a reason you use 2% nickle, rather than 5%? I've got no power hammer of press, so wish m luck ; ) I like that knife!
So the thing about the handle and criticism. We are our own worst critics. I would recommend either a disc Sander (grizzly for cost) or a mini mill($1500). As far as the handle and epoxy, thin it out with a couple of drops of acetone. Won't affect the holding strength and you don't have to have thick globs to get into a small hole
Oh, hit the feed store and you can grab some cheap plastic large animal syringes. Thats what i do. Of course im a country boy so feed stores arent hard to find for me. 😂
The cracks are because of how impatient and aggressive you are. Should only be consolidating around an 8th of an inch or less of visible material squish per heat. Keep it hot and go slower, moving less per heat. Might take you upwards of 10 heat soaks to get a can consolidated. Just move it slower and dont be so hard on it.
Any chemist, where you collect your regular medical supplies or tablets or medicines, will have... and MANY different sizes... from a diabetic that injects himself 4 times daily...
Every time I watch you off cut your billets I wonder if one day you’ll do a random pattern canister damascus with those offcuts. Actually, every knife maker’s videos I watch I wonder what they do with offcuts. Tyrell is the only one who satisfied that curiosity a couple years ago. ruclips.net/video/Si58yvY9Y-8/видео.htmlsi=cEtY1z1HW65kZHEU
I say it more for the people lookong for the stuff. Its the best bang for your buck ive found. I shop around for my materials since everything is so expensive. But no harm in shooting my shot. If i really wanted to I'd email them and negociate. I know some poeple they sponsor.
I don't use hidden tang knive because of the failure of epoxy is just to great a risk. I dont like rattail tang knives because they are weak to high impact, so i lean towards full tang or the morakniv style which is a 3/4-7/8 tang depending on the knife. I prefer the full tang most because i try to kill a knife out on the first test and it gets harder from there. If it survives the beef shinbone chops then ill consider it a decent knife.
If you are using this knife for something like that you are just distroying it for fun. There are different knives for different applications and this isnt one for that
Really enjoy how honest you are with yourself without beating yourself up on these projects.

That's a beautiful knife, you shouldn't feel any sort of hesitation in selling it. Someone will definitely buy it.
I am mynown worst critic i have been told
you gave out some great info for beginners this week. great work as always
Thsnk you
That's a beautiful knife. Very well done. I like the pattern and shape of the blade.
Excellent job mate. Nothing at all wrong with that knife

Beautiful knife from one maker to another great work
Thank you. I appreciate that.
I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again. Love the hammer work.
Thank you
Use coffee stir straws to displace the air from the bottom. It will allow the air to flow out thru the straw as epoxy goes in... 😉
I have two hammers and several press dies from Wahlberg forged, good stuff.
Hi 👋 there, brother ?!!! It's always exceptional 👌 but if you square up the billet, you don't need to have a cracked edge on your billet, but everything is gorgeous 😍
I can imagine paperclips would make a similar pattern
It does. But the contrast isnt as dark i believe
Looks great!!!!! Well done!!!
Nice looking pattern.
Great work as always from you when you make some knives
Like always when you explain how you are making
Purple heart would make a very nice handle
Fishhooks make a great effect. Awesome job
Thank you
Michael Myers says how much. Great work as usual.
Thanks
Awesome Knife!!👍

Looks good. Be nice to see a mechanical attachment too though, not just a glue one.
Glue is more than enough

I was thinking something similar… a skewer. Maybe running it through a small plastic funnel… have to play with that experiment later.

Yes i just have to get creative with what i order
That would make a very nice giveaway knife! Hint- Hint! 😁😁
I really like that knife.
Very nice blade.
I just did a small Bowie out of fish hooks. Probably my favorite to put in a canister.
Do you know how strong the fish hook steel is? Have you had any problems with it not holding up and dulling?
@ just in theory. Being high carbon fish hooks would lead me to believe that. They should hold up. But not knowing exact steel leaves reason to question theory. I have had no problems of dulling from any of the 5 I have made and sold

Much appreciated
I would love to work with that knife! Keep on, amazing result!

Very nice!
I want to see u try more mosaic Damascus
❤ you videos brother !
Thank you. I appreciate you
Nice knife
Thanks.
try mixing your epoxy in a baggy, then cutting off a corner and squeezing it out to put the epoxy in the handle.
Do you use ceramic sanding belts? It's a beautiful knife.
Yes
I have never seen taking out a billet from a canister directly while forging
I'm always curious: why not full-handle "tail"? (Probably it's just me, but i don't trust any joint that not bolt or rivet. And similarily don't trust tails that not as wide as physicaly possible)

How long do you leave it in the acid and coffee?
JP, if you have an IFA near you they have syringes or Amazon
