      Yeah, they tend to have the most to say, and they pick up on little details that regular people miss, like the lack of visible tendons in her neck to show she's not straining herself. Also, as in this video, they never wonder if it's really her or not like other people often do. Vocal coaches always know it really is her voice, and they know how she's doing it, but it still shocks them and blows them away even more because they understand how difficult it is to do that.

    This session was a result of them doing a re-recording of this song, after finding out that it sounds very differently with their new and still current drummer Vlad. So it was kinda made to show off his skills. And yes, Eugene on the bass is a beast! The entire band is immensely talented.

      I remember my first time hearing Jinjer, and I feel like a lot of the focus on Tatiana comes from the focus of a lot of pop artists on the vocals. It was my second time listening through Pisces that I really listened to the instrumental parts and I just went "WOOOOOOOW", which of course was my initial reaction to Tatiana as well 😂

    That "sound" is a false chord scream. I can do that as well. Took me approximately 2 months to learn to get the tone, but probably 3-4 years to get it down well enough (and safe enough to not hurt myself) to perform. 15 years of doing this and I do not have any damage to my voice. I'm glad you noticed the complete lack of tension because thats the trick most vocal teachers get wrong. It is ZERO tension and completely "voiceless". The sound is entirely made by relaxing and holding your vocal cords open and the folds above your vocal chords flapping about, then ultimately just shaped into words by your mouth. If you use any of your voice or throat, it WILL hurt you. I learned from experience that if you feel it or feel tired or strained, you're doing it wrong.

  • @Pecos1
    @Pecos1 3 года назад +36

    She taught herself to produce the growl solely from her diaphragm, completely avoiding her false chords. One of the big reasons it is so easy for her to switch between melodic and growl so effortlessly.

    • @Mr.Ekshin
      @Mr.Ekshin 2 года назад +8

      Ummm... no. You really have no idea what you're talking about. Tatiana's growl is 100% produced by her false cords (vestibular folds).
      The 'diaphragm' is merely a muscle that causes your lungs to draw or expel air. You can't actually produce any sounds with your diaphragm. I assume you've misunderstood all those vocal coaches who talk about "singing from the diaphragm". They are talking about proper air management, not actual sound production.

    • @Pecos1
      @Pecos1 2 года назад

      @@Mr.Ekshin I understand what you said. I just repeated what Tati said in an interview. In another interview with an opera singer, she was asked about the technical side of creating her growls, and she admitted she doesn't know the specifics of how it all works. Just that it works for her.

    • @Mr.Ekshin
      @Mr.Ekshin 2 года назад +1

      @@Pecos1 - She never said she growled "solely from her diaphragm, completely avoiding her false chords". She may have answered that it comes from her diaphragm (all singing, speaking and breathing starts with muscular control of the lungs).

    • @Pecos1
      @Pecos1 2 года назад

      @@Mr.Ekshin I concede I may have misunderstood. If I'm wrong, I'm wrong. She spoke about how her growls and screams come from different parts, that her screams come from her throat whereas her growls came from deeper, and that she used her diaphragm more when making the growls. Again, I admit I may have misunderstood, and she may have just been trying to describe as best as she understands it.

    There is a lot of editing on this. That said, the recording schedule for their latest album was very compressed due to also doing 152 shows on several continents that year, and Eugene says she improvised most of the vocal compositions with very few takes. Tati's evaluation was less charitable, saying "I wasn't prepared" haha. She is very talented, but there's a lot of years of work that went into making the most of that talent, including 4 years practicing growls before starting to use them in performances. All told she's been performing in various bands over half her life, since she was 15.

    There is a band called The Agonist which was founded 5 years before Jinjer. They have a similar style. The original singer Alissa White-Gluz is now with Arch Enemy and there for cant show her full skill set. I would recomend Panophobia if you need a video, otherwhise Ideomotor (8min Version). And if you are hooked check the new lineup too. The go to songs here would be In Vertigo or Blood as my Guide (there is a clean greek part in it, i now undrstand the sirens myth) 😜

    I'm SO glad you mentioned the bass player! I too know nothing about him, and I blame that on sheer laziness on my part, to not do the research. However, once you dissect this song, it's really hard to find the superstar. Unfortunately, the anomaly of Tatiana's vocal prowess often overshadows the tallent of the rest of the group.

      I think it's a little more forgivable in metal. When skeletonwitch recorded breathing the fire chance used a handheld mic for his vocals and it sounds awesome. It's ok to break the rules sometimes when you have enough experience to know why you're breaking them.

    *Also any other piece from Jinjer, this band is top in it's league and I recoment to dive in their music if you're interested, they blend a lot of genres so seamlessly. Every member is a talented musician and you can really tell by their techniques and their arraignments.
