Fix Hard Drive Access Denied & Local Drive is not Accessible

- If your external hard drive says "Access is Denied" and the drive is not accessible then please follow along carefully with these steps to fix this issue with hard disk.
I was plugin and unplugging my external hard drive from my smart TV and Windows 10 PC to watch movies when this happened. I just wanted to share this for those that are not computer savvy or able to troubleshoot problems that can occur while using external and local hard drives.
The hard disk was not showing up. I could not see the storage space available on the disk drive. Some type of connection issue on windows pc but isolated to a harddrive that does not show up on my computer.

I went through nearly exactly the same steps from a written tutorial but it wasn't enough. It really needed the extra step of adding the user manually again to the list.

Faild to enumerate object in the container. access denied. after trying the steps. Please help. My 2tb HDD was working fine on my windows 10 laptop. I removed and plugged it into my Samsung smart tv but after i removed it from the tv to connect it back to my laptop. it says access denied.

For me, when I try to click the "change" button within the "Advanced Security Settings List for Local Disk", the menu refreshes and says, "You do not have permission to view or edit this object"... :/
Change the hard disk owner first.

Legend, thought I'd lost 4tb worth of photos over the last 10 years .......time to get another drive and make a copy
Glad to hear you didn't lose your photos! You don't necessarily need a new hard drive. It is a good idea to have duplicates of your data but there is software you can download to tell you if your hard drive is at the end of its life. The issue in this video is not an indicator that your hard drive is bad.
Yea I know, the drive is fine. I use hard disk sentinel to view the drive health. That's how I knew the data was still there. The drives connection has gone very dodgy lately and keeps randomly disconnecting. That's why I want to get a new one.....also, I need more than 4tb at this stage. Thank you

@BleepingWorld I did mate, i managed to get permissions sorted for the drive but half of the folders still need me to manually go into them to gain access? and I can't update my drivers anymore despite having space on my main disk

When I try to press change for current owner it tells me “can’t open access control editor. Access is denied.” What do I do?
Are you on a work supplied computer or network? You need to have administrator rights on the computer.

Yea, this is normal depending on the computer. Some PC's will be slower to update.

Did you try changing the owner first? Just the owner.

Did you check the user access of the account you are currently logged in with?

It means that you are only using 43 GB out of 250 GB.

Sorry, Please check your other comment that I responded on. You want "User Name". On my computer I named my User Name the same as System Name, which made this video kind of confusion.

I still a problem. But first, thank you. My games drive became apparently 'corrupted and inaccessible', this was fixed via a CHKDSK. However, the drive access was denied. Written tutorials on this did not solve my problem but your video did. However, I have other issues: I can only see and access some of the contents on this drive, not all of it. There are games installed that I cannot see the folders to. However, when permissions were being added, it was showing me that it was 'applying' the changes to those directories, so they are definitely there, but I can't see them. Please help. How do I see and access the rest of the contents on this drive?
You might need to do the recursive option on the folders with the missing files.

You sound like you are too advanced for this Hard drive fix tutorial. I mean to start you probably need to open as administrator. Are you trying to preserve data or reformat the HardDrive?

I named my Login Account "ASUS" which is also my motherboard brand. In this video I tell you to look for your "System Name" which is wrong. Sorry, You are actually looking for "User Name" under that same system information list. You can also find your User Name by locking your computer with keys "Win + L". Then in security, search your Login name or User Name. When it is found add it to your harddrive.

Change the owner to your username. Then confirm the change. Once you are the owner, then Change the permissions.

for me, pluging in the HD into my TV did something. Probably remove access rights so that the TV could read the movies.

Plug into the USB of my TV to watch on it. Problem now is, this work around of yours only works on the changes above on my computer. If I plug into my laptop, I've got to do the whole procedure for that laptop.
Then plugging into my wife's laptop, same thing there, on her's.

I am an administrator on a windows 10 laptop. SSD Drive connected via usb.
Change the owner first. Then go back and change the permissions. I put cards in the video explaining.
