Shout out to this creator, you're a breath of fresh air for actually showing a free method using cmd first before any paid or freemium tools were introduced. I've been thought a few videos trying to solve this problem and every one was leveraging a paid tool or a tool that would scan then pay wall once data was scanned.

You dont need any 3rd part software or subscriptions to fix it go to command promt run as administrator and type chkdsk f: /f the f: is the partition that was randomly converted to raw so just replace that letter with your corrupted drive and it will rerstore all the files and resume normal operation. If it was games on there you will have to validate them through steam or on their software to run properly again. All other files worked right away.

Had myself an chkdsk-error when I moved my disks to another computer, and it found a ton of fragments and all that index-crap, and it left one of the disks useless, and I tried various restoration applications and they all found stuff, but given that this disk had a lot of stuff on it (2TB) it was difficult to remember what I had on it previously, and the applications restored contents, but with various results (File sizes). I didn't run CHKDSK anymore after that first failure and went directly to the recovery programs. Turns out, chkdsk, which incidentally was my last resort as it looked hopeless (And had already made backups from the recovery programs), so I took a stab in the dark and ran the CHKDSK /R and it chewed on the disk for a few hours, and to my amazement, everything, as far as I could tell, was back. I've wasted nearly 4 days trying to retrieve the data, and all I had to do was to use the built-in one and a simple /R-parameter!!? Way to go MS for effing up stuff. I don't get why CHKDSK can't prompt me to make a backup, or at least warn about that it might corrupt the files before rendering the disk potentially useless. Wonder how many people had to hire help to fix these kinds of problems... This is a really necessary thing that MS should fix, now when disks are getting really really big. This was a mechanical 2 TB 2½" drive on SATA III and not too quick (Rated 100 MB/Sec) so I'd like to see (But not own, if that were the case!) this happen to an 8-10 TB drive. It'd be running for days to trying to recover stuff... Smaller drives are quite cheap to buy if you want to have backups (Like RAID or mirrored), but you lose on capacity instead. Larger drives are very expensive and it doesn't take a rocket scientist to calculate that the cost doubles if you want a backup-drive for them. This is were RAID solutions come into play, where you have parity, spare drives etc, but still, it's more costly, instantly... Personally I prefer smaller drives. If something's lost, it doesnt mean the world has come to an end, even if it feels like it. I have 7 pcs of these 2TB, plus 5 pcs of 1TB, all 2½" drives. Why someone might wonder? Well, doesn't take as much space, nor consume as much power as an 3½". Allows for a denser build if you want something compact. Drawbacks are sizes. Again, thanks for that tip, really saved my bacon!

@@jayanthanj858 the *estimated* time varies depending on how the drives responds...as in read speed. So if it's old and/or damaged, there's no telling how long it will take; and the program updates the estimates completion time based on the *current read speed. But that rate changes as the program reads different sectors.

I got the "volume does not contain a recognized file system. Please make sure that all required file system drivers are loaded and that the volume is not corrupted" message. I ran chkdsk as you suggested (note -- I had to select "Run as Administrator" to get it to work) and it took about 6 hours but at the end the contents of the drive were accessible. I couldn't have done it without your help!
I lost my data because lost partition on my hard drive. I searched on the internet and most of them suggested me to use Stellar Data Recovery Professional for Windows. I used and recovered my data. you need to check the full video. It is a 2 part video that gives you a second option if command can't fix it. For some method 1 will fix it for some drives it won't.
Command prompt keep on showing "File record segment 103477....103480 is unreadable" and at bottom it shows Progress with some values and stage :43%; Total 0%; ETA 999:00:00. I have been seeing the unreadable entries from the beginning of chkdsk and few hours. Should I wait or stop this process? Can you pleas help on this please?
There is a huge problem with this tutorial. If a partition becomes RAW, Windows often will not even assign a drive letter to it, and the option to assign it will be greyed out in Disk management. So, you cannot chkdisk on the partition because it does not have a letter at all. But there is a workaround using partition GUID. And what's with those Instagram mentions in all comments? Do hard drive recovery experts live on Instagram only now? Where's reddit?

use hirens boot cd 10.5 and run hdd regenerator
