A little misleading in that formatting the drive was a quick format, which simply overwrites the FAT and marks the space as free. Also, Recuva's capacity to restore files will depend on the colour of the circle before the file name-green for a very good chance of recovery, yellow for 50/50, and red for near zero.

Just remembered a 2TB drive I had shelved a couple of years back as it was partitioned in half and had data on both partitions, when it lost the partition. I did not know how or if I could recover the data so I just shelved the drive. Any thoughts ?
This is awesome, at least so far it seems to be working, I installed a new drive so I could copy the files of a 2tb external hard drive to a local folder to move to dropbox, after a bottle of whiskey i accidently formatted the wrong the drive, cleared most of my work and personal files from 10 or more years... it's at 4% of scan 1 of 3, estimated time left 7 hours, found over 60,000 files so far
Question: did you also made a video about mirroring drives? I had some dataloss after installing Windows while using mirrored drives... got the data back though, after seeing this video about deleted data recovery. If not, could you do a video about that?
I once had a hard drive that wouldn't boot at all. I had to learn how to use Test Disk and Photo Rec which are Linux based recovery tools. I had zero experience with Linux but I finally figured it out and got all my data files and photos back. I then trashed that HDD for a new one and reinstalled Windows. I've used Recuva to get back files and photos before even long after I realized I had deleted stuff. Luckily the files weren't overwritten and recoverd nicely. It works well.
I had a Ugreen Nas lose my storage volume in RAID 5. I had the developers go in and now I can't even see my volume in Linux. I'm using ease USA to scan it but it's taking about a week just to scan....

Great video but what deleter can you sure to fully erase the SSD so Diskdrill ect cant find any and did you have to have TRIM on or off. Is better to encrypt whole SSD THEN do a full erase? Are their literally "hidden, reserved" blocks or data these erase programs miss and those blocks could have data on them? Do you have a suggestion for a Drive that went into RAW format? This is with an old 500 GB drive that quit working one year. Disk management would not see it. After a few years of trying again and again, it decided to work one day. I began transferring all the files, VIA "move", to a different drive. I had the faulty drive plugged into an external SATA reader. I did not know the USB3 cable was bad until I accidentally bumped the wire, while files were moving, and the drive disconnected from Windows. After that the drive went into RAW mode and cannot be read by Windows. I am sure a format will make the drive work again but I would rather rebuild NTFS somehow. I did use a different recovery tool on the drive, after going into RAW, and it does look like it recovered all the files I was going after (After 5 days of the deep scan option). However none of those files will open. They are Canon CR2 files. The headers of the files may be corrupted. The EXIF seems to be intact. Is there anything that might fix this?
@@drxzt No. I kept going through an endless loop of the same software under different names. If it is only the headers that need repaired then there must be something that can do it automatically. I would suspect it is the exact same error in each header. I have not attempted anything the past few months, as time consuming as it can become I occasionally look for anything new that may work.
I recently bought a second hand WD Elements 18TB external USB hard drive for backup purposes. I initialised the drive on a Win 10 pro system and created a new simple volume but when formatting the drive I un-checked the quick format option and did a full format - it took 28 hours to complete. I did this believing that all data on this drive belonging to the previous owner would now be permantently deleted and un-recoverable. In your video you formated the SD card leaving the quick format box checked. Could you comment on the difference between quick and full formatting and whether or not a full format really does completely reset the drive to factory state? Nice work, just found your channel and subscribed.
Test-disk and Photorec are wonderful alternatives Test-disk fixes ruined partitions data and Photorec recovers files even if the drive is fully not accessible

Off topic question: About a year ago my Windows 10 Pro had a melt down and I spent a great deal of time fixing it, although I managed to loose my ability to log into my MS Account - I have a permanent license. I Could not recover my MS account as I had to supply a number of recent incoming email addys. I supplied many but MS would not accept them - they were from people in Real-estate and various Government agencies. All of them had very long addys, with many . this and . that as well as / this and /that. Can a Licensed MS tech phone MS and set my account straight again? My standard issue Outlook has been toast ever since. In general I need to know this so as I can be specific if this will work. I am in Canada so MS should be the same here.👍
Hi, thank you for your tutorial. I'm just wondering, is this applicable even if we reformatted our windows which totally removed all our previous files? Thank you.
So I wonder if you had the system running for a day or longer in idle or on a game or something. Would you have the same success? Since there’s the chance it’ll get overwritten?

I'm already familiar with data recovery but the issue I am having with my current 2tb NVMe drive is that no matter what software I scan with (Disk Drill, R-Studio or Recuva), it is estimating something like a year or longer to scan. In the past when I have recovered data it has done so relatively quickly even for large drives. So why is it moving so slow? Something wrong with the drive? Obviously I cant let a drive sit here and scan for a year.
Thank you, this works ! Now i just need to buy a 1tb hard drive to retrasnfer my data to so i can then copy it back to the original (currently formatted) hard drive later.

Developer's Description By Piriform Recover files deleted from your Windows computer or from external storage (e.g. USB stick). Recuva (pronounced "recover") is a freeware Windows utility to restore files that have been accidentally deleted from your computer. This includes files emptied from the Recycle bin as well as images and other files that have been deleted by user error from digital camera memory cards or MP3 players. It will even bring back files that have been deleted by bugs, crashes and viruses. (I might add, if your happen to be from Boston it is spelled correctly as "Recuva". 😂)
Thank you friend, your video is very instructive, I appreciate your generosity in sharing the information. From me you have my subscription and I like your videos.
Hi Rich, thank you for the great work. Just a quick one. If the files i needed to recover on the drive / computer were saved on the desktop, documents or downloads. How do I go about that?
I have my old Gateway computer from 2001. Years ago I tried installing Ubuntu on it. The install failed for some reason, and there is sat for years, the computer still had the Ubuntu install CD in the CD drive. I now regret losing the data on this old computer, and I would like to restore it. How do I do it?
Hi there, Your a pretty good instructor and I tried following the procedure using Recuva portable which I downloaded onto a flash drive. The laptop I'm trying to recover a specific Excel document was deleted both from the computer and recycle Bin. I hardly used this laptop since this file was deleted but it's been sitting in a closet for a year. Recuva found the Excel xlsx file and shows the size as being only 140 bytes, that the state is Excellent with No overwritten clusters detected. When I try to open it, it says Excel cannot open the xlsx because the file format or file extension is not valid? Not sure what to do next?
Me again, I think I was able to open the Excel spreadsheet but there is nothing there. Only shows 1KB which I know should be quite a bit larger memory being used. There was around 12 pages of info that I'm trying to recover.
Howdy. Thanks for sharing this awesome video, and I have already attempted to do a recovery using all the tips on this video and had no such luck. What happened was, I was trying to create a Windows 11 recovery image for what I intended to be on a USB stick, but unfortunately during the creation of the Windows 11 recovery image it selected my 5TB external HDD (full of personal files collected over many years) and by the time I realised what was happening, the 5TB HDD had already been formatted and lost all my files. You mentioned on the video that my chances of recovering are slim to none, and it's looking like it now :( would really appreciate some more tips please. FYI, when I plug in my 5TB HDD now, it's only showing as 32Gb.
I have a partitioned SSD drive. One half is for the OS with extra space and the other half I kept design files, photos, etc. on. Can you run the software from the side you are not trying to recover?
I followed all the steps. When I click scan and attempted to recover my external hard drive, it says "Failed to scan the following drives: D::Unable to determine file system type" What should I do to recover my external drive?
I was trying to find a way to convert an Mac APFS to NTFS, without data loss, to share a bunch of files with a PC user. My Partition Wizard program would not convert APFS to NTFS without data loss. I even called the company and ask if it was possible. They said not possible. Then I got the idea to use the data recovery component of my Partition Wizard to "recover" files from the APFS partition and "restore" them to an NTFS partition. It worked great.
How does Recuva function on Shift+Del 'eted files? I tried a quite poor software that costed money and tried it on an SSD with TRIM. Of course it didn't work. I guess SD-cards are functioning simpler than SSD's, but still flash memory cells?
Nice video. I haven't tried your tutorial video yet because I wanted to know first if Recuva software will be able to extract the files from an unallocated files that I believe it was formatted when I downloaded the windows 10 pro on my 4tb external drive by accident. Now the external drive says under "Disk Mgmt" Disk 1 basic 4657.53 GB Online - ESD-USB 32.00 GB FAT32 healthy (Active, Primary partition), 2nd partition says: 2016.00GB unallocated and the 3rd partition says 2609.53 GB unallocated. I've been trying to figure out on how to "back up/save" the two unallocated partition first before recovery with no success. I've also seen videos to right click the unallocated files and select New Simple Volume. But I'm afraid to do it because some says you'll lose the files and some says I will not. I would really really appreciate any help so my wife will not kill me for losing all our kids pictures since birth.

Thank you so much for your video. It literally SAVED me in restoring my valuable baby pictures of my kids after having them all deleted after formatting the SD card.
It worked 🎉🎉
Awesome (yet again!) 😊
Simplest, most comprehensive tutorial with explanation that also shows the possible alternatives. Great job! (but the compoany is not called CCleaner but Piriform)
Just remembered a 2TB drive I had shelved a couple of years back as it was partitioned in half and had data on both partitions, when it lost the partition. I did not know how or if I could recover the data so I just shelved the drive.
Any thoughts ?
You demonstrated the recovery using the "Quick Format". Would it work for the regular format?
Rich! Great video thanks for sharing!
I had a Ugreen Nas lose my storage volume in RAID 5. I had the developers go in and now I can't even see my volume in Linux. I'm using ease USA to scan it but it's taking about a week just to scan....
All I want to say is a big thank you, and cheers to what you doing.
Just now recovered my files with the same way.
When I try I cannot get back
Recording video file can’t open it and pdf files also can’t open it
May be something wrong so someone can you guide me please 🙏🙏🙏
@@thinkhaing7705 I think you also faced the same thing, after the processes over you need to go and check what all the files recovered.
In the list, you might found something is recoverable and something is not. Just select all and copy or save to another hard drive.
It shows not recoverable, but you can save. Try that.
Egs are Windows "reset" erase and BIOS erase and CCleaner and 3rd party. do they all do roughly the same level of "erased" .thanks..
Best tool to 100% delete date from an old drive is a hammer. 👍👍
Done that. I always bin drives that way and break SATA port.
Hello, my drive automatically converted to dynamic, and then I converted it into basic but lost all my important data. I used Wizir to recover the partition but didn't get a single file. Please help.
Did you fix it yet? I have same problem at this moment. Need help
What happens if you instead, simply delete the partition on a hard disk instead of actually formatting it? Are the file names still lost or can you get them back?
did you find any software usefull please help me out>>>
As far as i know. I Used Linux to access a drive and recover files. Got to.check.for.the name.of.the software
thankyou so much man due to this i am able to recover my sisters wedding photos
You just saved my life. Can't thank you enouph 🙌🙌
Rick I love the video, but this process isn't working for me. I keep getting the pop-up ""Failed to scan the following drivers" D:: Unable to determine the system type." Please help!!!!
I got my hard drive with 4 partitions. When pluged in only two sections of it open ,the other two signals but i get this message you need to format disk to open. I have tried everything possible i know of to open ot without losing the data in those patitions. Can i please 🙏 😅 have anyone help on these thanks
Did you find a solution?
@@drxzt No. I kept going through an endless loop of the same software under different names.
If it is only the headers that need repaired then there must be something that can do it automatically. I would suspect it is the exact same error in each header.
I have not attempted anything the past few months, as time consuming as it can become I occasionally look for anything new that may work.
@@dera6347 damn, I’m just now trying a cracked version of EaseUS as my last option, couldn’t do anything with testdisk
Thank you so much for this super helpful video!!! I was able to recover all my files, thanks to you!!!
Test-disk and Photorec are wonderful alternatives
Test-disk fixes ruined partitions data and Photorec recovers files even if the drive is fully not accessible
currently in the middle of it and it needs 5 hours, ill take it, i see 1.4k files so far and i had 17k on one folder, i have a lot of hope for this.
i will update once i have progress
Thank you.
Subscribed! Will this also work with corporate encrypted storage devices?
No. I highly doubt it.
So I wonder if you had the system running for a day or longer in idle or on a game or something. Would you have the same success? Since there’s the chance it’ll get overwritten?
Great video. I used to use hiren’s booted like over 20 years ago and about 9 years ago I got robbed and lost all that plus some and I couldn’t remember the name of the software. I had the image of hirens on a cd and other doftware to fix pcs until I got robbed 9 years ago. Thanks for sharing and keep it up.
In your windows key, your ad showed a windows oem key. It will only work on the computer that you first install it on. A retail key will work on a new computer if you upgrade to a new computer.
thank you for this video, very informative and straight forward. 👍👍
question though if it works also on iPhone after it was reset?
why did it shown to buy premium in my case bro? it will not recover if i dont buy premium smh
Downloading the tools itself can override the deleted files. Make sure when downloading to choose the destination drive before start downloading.
How does Hiren's BootCD PE works? Make a video about Hiren's BootCD PE
Already did. It should come out either next week or the week after.
Thank you, this works !
Now i just need to buy a 1tb hard drive to retrasnfer my data to so i can then copy it back to the original (currently formatted) hard drive later.
Thank you so much! New subscriber for life.
Hey man so my external hard drive with 3tb changed to ESD-USB and changed its storage to 32gb because I downloaded windows media creation tool will this work because im not sure I’m scared because I had important stuff on it if you could could u make a video on it
same, had 1000s of hours of video and adobe projects. made the mistake of using an external to DL windows for reinstall. erased my data and reformatted to D drive.
Hello,
I Watched your video discussing Recuva. Thanks for sharing such a informational video. Could you provide guidance on which software is better between Recuva and Stellar for data recovery? I'm currently facing data loss and I'm uncertain which software to try. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
It is possible to recover the partition table and all files keep the names. with a open-source software - it is a common tool for linux.
You saved me, thank you so much. With the latest version, it make the original file name and folder possible, great app.
I don't have the d drive which is merged with c drive during formatting can I retrieve few file update in last 2 months
What if you accidentally formated wrong drive when installing windows from a usb drive am i screwed. I tried method in this video but the old partion not showing up only the new partion.
Thanks. What if windows is not allowing access to the internal HD and you had it disk scan that did deleted "orphans" files. Also, it is a big 14Tb HD and in safe mode it opens, but some files have different content. I will try to see what is considered lost first. Any recommendation?
Developer's Description

Recover files deleted from your Windows computer or from external storage (e.g.
Thank you so much! I was just wasting my time searching on youtube thank god you helped me .
Worked like a charm👌, thank you!
TY so much for the educational videos!!
Thank you so much for your invaluable information, highly appreciate it, keep it up the outstanding job, have a great day.
Hi there,
Your a pretty good instructor and I tried following the procedure using Recuva portable which I downloaded onto a flash drive.
Me again,
I think I was able to open the Excel spreadsheet but there is nothing there.
I believe it's pronounced Recuvva (like Recover). As for CCleaner, it's only C-Cleaner, which originally stood for Crap-Cleaner.
Glad I found your valued information - thanks
crazy dude🔥
I been looking for a new desk. Would you mind sharing the ones you have?
They are two adjustable work tables from Home Depot. They have a crank that adjusts their height like a standing desk.
@@CyberCPUAwesome, thanks!
@@CyberCPU The name of Recuva, I think, is a play on a NY or Boston accent - Recova instead of recover?
Awesome video, I checked your channel, your video is funny! You earned a subscriber, Take care!
I have a partitioned SSD drive. One half is for the OS with extra space and the other half I kept design files, photos, etc. on. Can you run the software from the side you are not trying to recover?
so thankful of you, saved my day, its worked.
16:05 Do I have to worry about data being overwritten if the data I’m trying to recover is on an HDD?
Same here so I finally got it sorted through the aid of *_Cyber.kor1* those pictures were going to ruin my home had it been I didn't get it retrieved 😂

Going with what you said on recovering "accidently" dot dot dot..
A good video on that line would be if someone has a USB-drive or any that when plugged in does not show it or say's it's corrupted..
I have, for a few clients attempted to bring back from the dead, those mentioned drives.. It took me a couple weeks to figure it out, but most of them I was able to recover data or make it usable again. The only ones I could not "FIX" were those with physical damage and a couple that were literally fried..
I believe this could make a very viewed video.. How many times have you went to plug in a usb-drive to have it not show up?? Yeah, me too.. Many of your other viewers may find that very handy..
Loved the video, I find them very informative & helpful...
Thank you for sharing..
I have questions for you I have window 11. and edge browser and I delete collections. I don't have them backup. Can
