As soon as SJ has gotten the wagons and license then this will be a legendary route from Scandinavia to Mainland Europe. The night train is coming back
I watch quite a few night train documentaries & reports and they are almost always negative, with regard to price , time savings, noise at night anf convenience. The CO2 Pitch will not be enough long term.
As a train enthusiast myself, I would not book these products currently. And the empty compartments show that this seems to be a shared sentiment.
@@kantace5198 you probably mean the night trains as a whole, as there are not many reviews of this train?
Empty compartments here are because SJ f***ed up reservations. Nightjet trains of ÖBB were fully booked this summer.
@@kantace5198 The problem is that these operators are still relying on the same old ex-german coaches from the 70's and 60's. Things are not going to get better until ÖBB's new NightJet becomes the standard for all night trains in Europe.
_sad Snälltåget noises_
@@kantace5198 I would definetely disagree with that statement. I also don’t know what dokumentaries you watched the ones I have seen are mostly positive. Me personally I love travelling by night train you have to get used to the moving of the train but after a few trips you can sleep wonderfully. It’s true that many trains are old and in need of an refurbishment. But still in my opinion it’s the most comfortable option for travelling distances from 800-1600km. 😅
@07:35 the steam whistle isn't actually played through the speakers, instead the lead engine of the train to Lörrach, BTE 110 491 is still equipped with it's original compressed air whistle, hence the similar sound to some steam trains. A nice gesture of the crew aboard to greet you train.
both trains (to lörrach and stockholm) are operated by RDC Deutschland, so maybe that was the idea of rdc management
Yes, somewhat of a disaster. You managed to handle it quite well. I enjoyed the video and the ride, thanks for taking me along.
Night owl! You aren't getting much sleep. If I traveled on a train at night, I would be sleeping as much as I could! We love your videos.
Great trip, despite some disaster and disappointed moment along this journey. And it was great you met others RUclipsr like Mr Mark from Seat 61 and Mr. Thibault from Simply Railway. I hope some problems on this trip become Evaluation material for SJ to fix and improving their services on Euronight Train. It's surprising me when there is big cruise ferry in Stockholm
it is the daily vikingline rotation between abo and stockholm
There are always "big cruise ferries" in Stockholm. Several departures a day for Finland.
Amazing Journey ✌️
I love your Channel. Big fan.
Hope you get a better trip next time and that you enjoyed my hometown of Stockholm 🇸🇪😎
there are many more stockholm train videos on my channel - even from 2023
interesting video, beautiful images BRAVO
As always, very interesting and entertaining. At least you didn't cancel this video like they cancelled your ticket! I hope next time you can enjoy the delectable delights of a proper restaurant car and sleep blissfully in a proper sleeper car! Cheers!
We are doing this trip these days. I hope, sleeping wagon will be attached!
There were no steam locomotive sounds played through the stations speaker. They came from the older locomotive of the rdc train to Lörrach.
I actually like your night light👍
Mă bucur să te văd din nou Prietene🙋🙋🙋
🔝🔝🔝🔝🔝🔝🔝🔝 great work
What a great video once again. Wow, you have the best railfan videos on You Tube. What a shame about the experience you went through. What are the odds of all four of your cards being denied. I'm surprised they didn't offer you a meal for free after going through that and having your original booking cancelled for no reason. I'm glad it worked out for you and you at least got a couchette.. Once again, great video and thanks.
Wow, what a disaster! But the video was amazing! Despite all the problems it seemed like a very beatiful and interesting journey! All these different locomotives and the shunting action... The choice of music was excellent!
In Hamburg the steam-locomotive-like whistle you heard was the air-powered whistle of the class 110 locomotive of the night train next to your train ;)
In Flensburg it seems like you had a lot of sparks from the caternary, because the route your train took is rarely used by electric trains, on a daily base the DSB uses their MF (IC3) trains, which have diesel engines. And the freight trains take the direct way turning left in Flensburg Weiche, so they don't take the loop via Flensburg station.
I really enjoyed this video and I am glad it had such a good ending and you could enjoy the boat trip ;)
Really hat to laugh when I saw the train back to hamburg consisting of one locomotive and one car! xD
A beautiful ride - even if a rather unpleasant one, alas. Nevertheless, your editing skills were particularly excellent: bravo!
👍🏻🏴 The best video of this farcical inaugural service. Very detailed in the Germanic fashion. How NOT to run a train service.
There is a neutral zone (it means with no power) on the overhead lines in the south side of the Padborg Station. Using dual or tri current locomotives the traindriver switches the feeding of the locomotive when it goes beneath.
Wow for all of Amtrak‘s shortcomings, we never send out a train set that needs a sleeper without one; Great video though thanks for sharing
It’s due to the Danish bureaucracy, SJ would never voluntarily send trains without sleepers…
Thanks for your videoreport!
In my opinion, you are overdramatising the problem with the cancelled or not cancelled sleeping car ticket. Simply presenting your ticket to the staff at Hamburg-Altona and asking for an alternative berth would have been responded positively, I am quite sure. At the same time, you could have asked for a notice on your ticket print-out affirming the downgrading for a partly refund later.
A failure of the card terminal, however, is *really* very bad on a train where hard cash payment is excluded.🤬 In such a case, I would at least expect a free cup of coffee or tea.
Take care!
It is my experience that asking for sth., while train is already moving, is usually more successful, than asking sth. on the station platform; for the conductors it is easier to say NO on the platform then on a moving train (because a NO in a moving train causes a lot work extra work and trouble for the conductors); Moreover, I only knew after departure that the train was empty
@@doc7austin
If the staff, when presenting your ticket, would have refused you to travel by this night train, a written affirmation would have been obligatory. Still in Altona, this would have meant a stay at the nearest hotel and the journey to Stockholm the next day by other trains at the expense of SJ.
What if both couchettes had been sold out completely? Finding a hotel room at Padborg around midnight is much less funny.
Btw: will SJ/ÖBB partially refund the price of your ticket because of the downgrading from sleeper to couchette?
What would a written affirmation help me? I needed to be in Stockholm the following day at noon; The chance that a ticketed couchette car passengerd NO SHOWs would be pretty high, if the train had been fully booked; but the conductors know about a NO SHOW only after departure from hamburg; moreover, i would have been willing to stand for the rest of journey
@@doc7austin
"I needed to be in Stockholm the following day at noon; moreover, i would have been willing to stand for the rest of journey"
O.k., this type of gambling and train traveling is overwhelming at least me. Carry on and good luck!😀
my gamble paid off; and i made it onto the inaugural train - with cancelled tickets
28:10 Öresundståg isn’t only DSB, it’s actually co-owned by all the counties (län) in Sweden that it runs through as well. So Blekinge (Blekingetrafiken), Kalmar (Kalmar länstrafik), Kronoberg (Länstrafiken Kronoberg), Västra Götaland (Västtrafik), Halland (Hallandstrafiken) and Skåne (Skånetrafiken) own part of it. It’s actually operated by SJ right now but will soon be taken over by Transdev. DSB wanted their logo on it so they could run some DK-domestic trips with the trains that aren’t allocated for Öresundståg (13 sets out of 111 if I’m not mistaken, but Skånetrafiken want to purchase them for capacity upgrades). It’s a bit more complicated but hopefully I explained it well enough :)
As I’ve understood it, SJ contracted RDC to be responsible for all the technical aspects of operating this train, including all the carriages, and they weren’t able to supply the original cars in time due to the war in Ukraine, so they came up with the brilliant idea of replacing them with other cars only about a month before launch. Well, that’s apparently too little time for the Danish railway agency who wouldn’t accept EU-wide certification, and they didn’t certify them before the launch, resulting in only five couchettes being able to run. The reason for the odd number of cars is because the ordinary trains are supposed to have two couchette cars and one reserve car but SJ simply decided to run a train with three cars on the launch day. The couchettes were allowed because Snälltåget run the same type on their trains to Europe and they were already approved.
But yeah, SJ did mess up by relying on RDC too much. Shit happens, I guess… :)
i cannot wait
The best option remains taking the Stockholm-Malmö night train and then the DSB service Copenhagen-Hamburg imo. One can do the whole journey in first class as well :)
Two small things: 1. It is spelt "disaster". 2. At 32:19 it is not the Åby-Järna line on the film, it is the new line to the harbour in Norrköping. The Åby-Järna line is slightly further north, after crossing the E4 motorway as seen in the film.
Maybe he spelt that way so we could get us some laughs.
Thank you for this video! I am going to travel this train on 15th od december and I am wondering if there are many people taking this train? Any chances that there wont be 5 other people in my compartment? Any experiences guys on the occupancy rate?
Which foods did you bring with you, and ended up eating for breakfast?
Thank you for a most interesting video. Great shame about the confused booking arrangements, and what an appalling service at breakfast. That would never happen on Amtrak !
What is the color lamp? Is it for battery? I could not find something likw this suite for travelling
Sleeper trains are nice in all countries.
Did @seat61 and @SimplyRailway experience the same cancellations and problems?
As for the Sleeper coaches, SJ originally intended to use a different type of sleeper carriage from RDC's fleet, the WLABmz 71 which they have been trying to renovate in order to be used on this service. However the renovation has had a delay meaning they wouldn't be ready. So as compensation RDC tried to put in the MUn coaches instead but were too late with the paperwork to be done in time. They look like they'll be done over the next few weeks but still. Usually the standard is to send in coaches for certification with paperwork and such some 5 months in advance of service starting, but this was done in much less time.
Either way since its SJ's train, you should be getting your info from SJ. Just why did you book through ÖBB?? Booking through third parties is always a bad idea. Like SJ at least tries to compensate an inform with the tickets they know they have sold and can contact their passengers through, but ÖBB doesn't care because its not their service, they're just a third party seller for this route.
because ÖBB and DB offered through tickets
Perfect video! You deserve a sub from me!
Were there anything positive about the trip?
Can you show me full air? (as there must be empty air, reading your comments) 🙂
👍👍👍
Why was crossing the bridges so complicated and restrictive?
Did you get a satisfactory explanation about the cancellation from SJ?
What a horrible experience. What were the beds like? Were they comfortable?
Just a hint: I filed a complaint against ÖBB for their illegal ticket cancellation. It was my understanding that the fare conditions and EU passenger rights legislation would not allow for a cancellation. The German Railway Authority (EBA) rejected the claim, because ÖBB is not within their jurisdiction, despite that fact that the train departed from Germany. The Austrian Railway Authority (APF/Schienencontrol) rejected my claim, because ÖBB had the right to cancel and I was not allowed to use the ticket anymore.
From APF: "Ansonsten könnte Ihnen ggf. die Erschleichung einer Leistung vorgeworfen werden, welche unter Strafe steht."
What happened to the ticket money? ÖBB cancelled the ticket, however, I am still trying to find out where the money was sent to. I have provided ÖBB my bank details for the downgrade refund. No money has ever been received on this bank account.
Why not to sj
@@doc7austin
Well this is a true warning: BOYCOTT the ÖBB.
I always wondered, why SJ doesn't work jointly with DSB on this matter? Should've been easier to solve all permission issues.
my assumption is that DSB is not the slightest interested to get themselves involved in the international sleeper train business
@@doc7austin so they aren't caring about their intercity rolling stock too
@@doc7austin no. SJ works with Hector Rail because it is the only company that has permission to pull loco hauled passenger trains over Öresund. The problem with sleeping car permission has nothing to do with DSB, but with Danish railway authorities.
@@markoobid2005 Hector Rail leases locos permitted to traverse Oresund, not carriages, I'd doubt that both Denmark and Sweden do not have enough certified sleeping ones to make a full flock.
Nonetheless, I hope to try this EN myself
@@user-wu4cw5ed5w it's not about locos, but the whole organization, personal etc., and Hector is the only company that is permitted to operate loco-hauled passenger trains over Oresund bridge. SJ and DSB don't have such authorizations. So SJ was forced to cooperate with Hector in Denmark.
And the locos are Hector's own, they don't lease any.
It is probably just semantics, but I have a problem understanding the use of the term 16 2/3 Hz which is 1/3 of 50 Hz. Technically, each phase of AC 3-phase is still either 50 Hz or 60 Hz, as in the US, but is shifted by 120* or 1/3 of 360*, a full circle. Voltage is the easy part, cycles per second or Hertz is the part that throws me when people try dividing it. At 16 2/3 Hz, you could see lights flicker.
You had an interesting trip. Nice video.
The 16 2/3 Hz SINGLE phase is derived from 50 Hz THREE phase using rotary converters. The 15 kV AC from a single overhead wire could then be transformed to the lower motor votages on the locomotives, albeit with a much heavier transformer. The advantage of the lower frequency was that the motors were more efficient.
@paullangford8179 you are correct however that does not apply to Germany post 1995 because they opted to upgrade the substations to 16.7hz for the 15kv AC wire system. When it comes to 15Kv ac voltage you have Norway and Sweden using the original 16 2/3hz system and then SBB ÖBB & DB 16.7hz system post October 1995.
Did the Traxx loco switch electrical systems on/after the Öresund bridge or is it 25kV 50hz all the way up to Malmö C? Also, why are the emergency brakes disabled while in a tunnel?
According to Wikipedia, the switch between electric supply systems occur just before the bridge in Sweden, so not all the way to Malmö.
When I took this train last summer, they changed locomotives in Malmö and in Padborg just north of the Danish/German border. I noticed it because power in electrical outlets were lost, although the ceiling lights were still on (probably powered by a battery).
At least Sweden is a beautiful country ! LOL😄😄😄😄
About the early departures it must be said that since the train, in this case, has no seating cars, passengers are not allowed to enter the couchette cars, after 1.00am usually, so to not disturb the sleeping passengers.
In Italy, for example, the 3 couples of only sleeping and couchette car trains (all to/from Sicily) not rarely arrive at their destination on earlier time (even 1 hour since they make few stops during the night and are often scheduled at a very large time lap so to recover from a possible delay during the ship trip from Sicily to the mainland because of bad weather). I. E. 2 days ago the IntercityNight 1975 Roma-Siracusa/Palermo arrived 48 minutes early.. Lol
In the US, trains may arrive early but have to depart at the scheduled time or after. This is by railroad rule.
As well, such trains require reservations and if the staff know they have the full complement of passengers, it doesn't matter how early the train leaves. The only potential "losers" are those who might turn up at, say, 3 in the morning hopeing to catch the train.
👍🏻😁
How did you book the ticket? I have been trying to book a ticket on SJs website, but it always says "unavailable".
please watch the video; it is all explained there
Thats funny because according to SJ and newer passengers who have used the service since inarguration, the trains are actually fully booked for several months now.
music track at beginning?
I'm sorry you had a bad experience. I'm Swedish but lived abroad for most of my life, in the US for the last 27 years. I do travel by train when I can. Here and globally. As you unfortunately had to experience, SJ is incompetent from an operational point of view. Amtrak here in the US is incompetent from a technical point of view. In Sweden, MTR Express, Snälltåget and Flix Trains all focus on moving the most people, not about revenue or profit. Thus, they provide a pathetically poor service at low prices. Sad really when trains can be very comfortable, a great experience and time and cost effective.

I think October will get better. The SJ had starting difficulties.
my assumption is that this train service could be cancelled alltogether
@@doc7austin never...that's the SJ...the SJ said everything will be normal from October.
october of which year? how will sj magically receive the certification to run all of its cars on the öresund bridge?
@@doc7austin SJ ordered new ones. they are supposed to come in early October this year
and how will SJ manage to get the certification for these refurbished ab32 sleeping cars ?
Same as 2021
Hi,
I have to admit that I am quite confused about my journey with this still quite new EuroNight train.
For next week I have booked a seat (!), while for the return journey in the first week of October I have booked a seat in the couchette.
Now I have already been informed that only couchettes are running at the moment, as seating and sleeping cars have not yet been approved for Denmark.
For the outward journey, I have already heard about a replacement bus service - is that real?
If the train is really as empty as on the first journey, I would definitely try to get on the train on the outward journey.
The return journey should theoretically not be a problem, as I have booked a couchette.
I have not yet received a message from SJ and ÖBB (from whom I bought the ticket but have not yet retrieved the pdf).
It's also strange that the timetable information continues to mention sleeping and seating cars...very strange.
What should I do?
get the pdf asap!
Wait you did not receive a PDF immediately upon booking??? or even an email with it attached???? What the heck is going on with ÖBB's booking system?????
@@drdewott9154 I had the option of having my booked tickets issued as a pdf on the ÖBB website. However, there was a note that I should only do this shortly before the journey so that a cancellation was still possible.
But I have now created them and printed them out. My seat ticket is in carriage 27 (which probably doesn't exist) and my couchette ticket (for the return journey) is in carriage 30.
@@doc7austin I have them now.
mind you! the pdf must be generated seperately! If you do that too late (after öbb cancelled the ticket), then you cannot generate the pdf file anymore
I thought Malmo Central Station included a thru- underground station.
It has but mostly regional trains are stopping there underground.
Oh you mean ”Malmö Triangeln” It would be cool if it passed through there
I feel kind of sorry for SJ on that return train to Hamburg. I mean a single car barely even counts as a train!
One has to wonder why SJ did not add seating cars for Malmö like Snälltåget does. There are a lot of local commuters who could have used that train.
Can you cross between a RIC Couchette Car and a classic SJ seating car ?
@@NerdX151 Because they are copying "budget" operators like FlixTrains, running everything as cheaply as possible and leasing rolling stock from third party holding companies. It's embarrassing. In the 1980s when properly funded full-service national railways still existed it would have been unthinkable to run an inaugural service with ONE CAR!
That SJ Train looks to me like number 441 from Končar, which was produced in Yugoslavia.
It's the other way round. The Yugoslav locos are copies of the Swedish locos.
JZ Class 441s were produced based on a design from ASEA (same as the Romanian Class 060-EA / EA1 / EA2).
Huh? I thought they were supposed to rebook people to the best of their ability.
Did all tickets get cancelled or was it just second or third party tickets? Was the Stockholm - Hamburg train equallly empty, considering that train would probably had more people booked throu SJs own site?
The tickets were cancelled, no rebooking was offered; However, the cancellation of tickets was illegal
I'm pretty sure Simply Railway had booked a sleeper ticket directly through SJ but didn't get his cancelled, just downgraded to a couchette. So it does seem like it has more to do with ÖBB than it does with SJ directly.
Regarding the electrification voltages you have the October 1995 Germany Austria Switzerland 15kv 16.7hz AC 1.95m Pantographs 25kv 50hz Denmark (1.95m Pantographs) Padborg to the Øresund Bridge/Tunnel Voltage change 15kv 16 2/3hz 1.8m Pantographs. For a locomotive to run the whole route it needs to have Stockholm Hamburg ETCS ZUB Denmark ATC Sweden PZB LZB Sifa ÖBB DB. In addition to voltages and Pantographs. Regarding the SJ RC6 It has a name in the United States the Amtrak X995
The Hector Rail Traxx 241 (F140 AC) should check all those boxes, isn't it?
@@doc7austin All those boxes are tracked by that locomotive and if not needed they can actually run into Germany for Freight use towards Hamburg Maschen Rbf.
From your narration I understand that the germans drive the train in germany, the danes in Denmark and SJ in Sweden. If that is correct, why talk shit about SJ because the train left Kastrup early? And you said in the beginning that SJ said sleeper trains won't be run, and ÖBB said your ticket is cancelled while your blaming it on SJ later on? And btw, I wouldn't consider the X2000 ancient as it has been renovated starting in 2013, and launched in the 90s.
But a good video eitherway!
That statement with the power at 14:30 is not true - there is still 15 KV 16,7 Hz at the moment, its aprrox 250 meters further ahead the Current switches and the 241 starts on 15 Kv then lowers the patograph and rolls pass a short non powered section and switches current settings and lifts the pantograph once again and runs now on 25 KV - 50 hz
thats why we stopped again shortly after we left padborg to the north with the 241
Let's hope in due course all rail, except, perhaps, local commuter traffic, is electrifies at 25 kv 50Hz. It seems to be an accepted standard in much of the world now.
You didn't book a compartment in the MUn, you were booked into the AB32s, which was plan A. The supply chain issues that led to their delayed refurbishment only became a problem in June as the war in Ukraine lingered on, which is the point at which they froze bookings for sleepers. Only in early August after the Alpen-Sylt-Nachtexpress was discontinued early did RDC offer the MUn sleepers as a stopgap. Then came the authorisation issues which, as explained in another comment, aren't as much a case of naivety as rather one of Danish regulatory incompetence (admittedly a known one but that doesn't excuse the Danes for breaking international law.) As things stand, they will probably get the first sleepers ready in early October.
To sum up: the root cause of the missing sleepers is supply chain issues caused by the war in Ukraine, then Danish disregard for international law put spokes in their wheels for the authorisations. The only truly reprehensible thing SJ did was how they communicated the whole thing.
Sorry, you are telling me that the missing electric components were originally ordered from Ukraine or sanctioned Russia? Moreover, as you also said, SJ knew about the issues with the Danish authorities early on; Fingerpointing is not going to help here
@@doc7austin Yes, from everything I've read (I'm fluent in Swedish), the missing components were ordered from Ukraine.
do you have a source for that? I am hearing that for the first time; but anyhow, i bought my sleeping car ticket on april 28; the war in ukraine at that point was already raging for 65 days; the supply chain issue must have been known to RDC on april 28 already; so why did SJ sell sleeping car tickets then?
@@doc7austin it's not fingerpointing, just telling the truth. SJ didn't know about Danish regulatory and legislation "hole" and they didn't even have to know, as they aren't owners of the cars. If anyone, then it's RDC (a German partner and cars owner) who should have known about Danish problems before offering MUn cars as a replacement for yet unfinished AB32s. But at RDC they did everything they could, they provided the whole documentation to Danish authorities and the cars are fully compliant with their rules. It's internal Danish regulatory problem (that ERA has to authorize those cars before them, even though they are RIC) that stopped the cars.
How did RDC plan to get the AB32 sleeping cars certified for the Öresund Bridge? I would assume that the same issue would have arisen then with the Danish authorities
Not advertised at all and just running it because of subsidy.
Why not let SJ use DBAGs Class 101 electrics from Hamburg to Padborg?
because RDC is probably cheaper than DB Fernverkehr to operate the train between Padborg and Hamburg
DB Fernverkehr didn’t want to operate the train.
When you prsented youserself as a stowaway to the conductor, did he make you buy a new ticket? Or did he honour your original (cancelled) ticket ?
If you had to buy new ticket, did the credit card machine workl at that point?
At the Danish borderl was the fact you were not on the manifest matter to border guards? Or did they just check that all individuals on boatd had proper passport/papers and not related to any ticket?
1. I always had a valid ticket; And certainly I would have never paid a penny on the train; 2. The skin colour/nationality is not listef on any manifest, so what benefit would a benefit bring to the Danish Police?
@@doc7austin When you video said your ticket had been cancelled, I was curious if you had been refunded and ticket worthless. If ticket still had value to be used for a new reservation, then I could see conductor accepting it.
With regards to manifest at border: Knowing how many are supposed to be on board can provide a sanity check of whether they scanned every passenger. If they have list of passenger names from manifest and cross each name when passport seen, if there are names left at end, they can then look for those passengers (call on PA system, or check with conductor if they had boarded since conductor would have scanned tickets).
2. regarding Danish passport control; we are talking about a Schengen border (between two Schengen countries); So Danish Police is not required to check 100% of all passengers; Danish Police is to identify refugees without valid papers; Police officers have eyes and can spot questionable travellers
1. The ticket was officially cancelled; however, I haven't received a cash refund on my personal bank account; There is a EU passenger rights legislation -> tickets cannot become worthless, just because the railway company cancelled it; that is illegal; the passenger can always opt to use that ticket for another train and the railway company who issued the ticket must reimburse all addtional costs that came with taking a later train; All in all, the conductors had to accept that ticket, because the cancellation of the ticket was illegal in the first place
@@doc7austin Thanks. Was under the impression that cancelling a ticket meant cancelling reservation AND providing refund. I'll have to rewatch, but after you got email on cancellation, did you try to rebook trip with whatever space was available? Or was the train fully booked on reservation systems?
pleasant viewing. oh, the dramas when starting a new service. the marketing department and accounting department are in a hurry. the maintenance department are doing their job as best as possible, and you end up with a dog's breakfast. as for incompatible electricity supplies, i may stand to be corrected, but switzerland has many different supplies and some locomotives seamlessly convert from one sort of power to another while continuing the journey. swapping locomotives, is stupid and needs to be avoided.
Did train stop at Copenhagen's main station?
no
You were just lucky. These two cars could have been fully booked and there wouldn’t have been any amicable solution.

To think that 35 years ago we had the Alfred Nobel EuroNight from Hamburg to Stockholm, which mostly consisted of TEN sleepers and had a restaurant car on the swedish side. The new SJ train is a joke.
Sad to say, much land transport across Europe has been run into the ground by the so-called "cheap" airlines (which can at times be even more expensive than scheduled carriers). But these airlines will get their comeuppance in the course of time.
So, why were the sleeping cars cancelled? With only 15 passengers on the train, could the reason be, well, ahem, insufficient bookings of the sleeping cars to justify their expense...
Also, if skipping breakfast is a disaster, one has to envy the comfortable, problem-free life you live...
its not the lack of breakfast; what is a disaster that 4 of my payment cards did not work on the train; while they worked perfectly after I arrived in stockholm
Simply put they wanted to use a different type of coach they were renovating but those renovation wouldn't be ready in time. So as a hasty solution they would try to offer a different type of sleeper coach, but they'd still need to send in paperwork for it to be certified, which wasn't done early enough for it to be getting the green light in time. I recall reading they're close to getting the green light, having gotten it from the Danish authorities now and just needing approval from Brussels but still, the usual standard is to send in paperwork regarding the rolling stock to be used at least 5 months in advance, whereas this was only done 2 or so months ahead of service starting.
...Question is: why does SJ see the necessity of a night train between Hamburg and Stockholm?!🤔
.. because the Swedish government railway agency Trafikverkert hat put out a tender for a train company to operate a Stockholm-Hamburg sleeper train; So essentially SJ receives taxpayers money in running that train
@@doc7austin ... This money -& so taxes!- seem top me to be wasted money: pulling two or three old couchette-cars being almost empty through parts of Europe ...
@@erichklein6560 more connections is a good thing, and it's a hell of a lot cleaner and more efficient than air travel.
@@erichklein6560 this service was an L tbh
To have a connection to mainland europe directly from Stockholm. In 2018 I went on a trip to Hamburg by train and had to change train two times, now its zero.
Maybe the train was originally full, but nobody else decided to dispute the cancellation ...
This service is a shambles - best avoided !
Haha, I live along this route and I would say most Swedish, Danish and German overnight (sleeping car) train lines are better than this one.
This line will run in full in a few months, trust the process..!
@@louise_rose live in Sweden and this is probably our worst night train service, including Snälltåget, so far…
It’s great that you had a nice ending to the trip though, this was truly horribly executed…

A.S.E.A. mama alor noastre .
Just another example which shows how idiotic it is to deny the use of cash!
State operators doing what they do best: fuck things up
Unlike the Ryan Air of railways FlixTrains which can't even heat or cool their trains properly. The idea that private = always good and state run = always bad is a relic from a bygone era when the west was competing with communism. The last 20 years have shown that this simply is not true.
as long as there is no strong central authority in Europe to knock some sense into these national(istic) bureaucracies (and companies), travelling by train will remain a mess
I mean they have tried, many countries tried passing a law to make all national railway operator's ticket data widely available and be able to be resold via any platforms, but a few countries pushed hard against it on the basis that it would threaten their state railway monopolies. Those primarily being Germany and France. In Fact Germany has actively worked against progress on improving railways in Europe for a long time now. Alongside this Stockholm-Hamburg train, another subsidised train was planned from Malmö to Brussels, but that was cancelled as no bidders arrived dude to the amount of time the train would spend in Germany, where the regulations made it nearly impossible for a service that receives subsidies for part of its route to stay afloat. In fact in Germany subsidising long distance trains is illegal, and EU laws mean that Sweden or Denmark can't subsidise a train in Germany either.
@@drdewott9154 Capitalism and the "free"-market gone mad.
@@drdewott9154 I always repeat that Germany and France are ironically the main obstacles in EU’s fair, successful and effective functioning.
