  • Mothers and fathers open up to college students about loss suffered when pledges to fraternities and sororities die as a result of hazing rituals. Correspondent Lee Cowan talks with anti-hazing advocates, and with representatives of the Greek community, who have joined forces in an effort to reform a long-accepted practice.

Hazing is just another way of bullying. As long as it is shrugged off when kids are quite young, it will continue. This type of behavior must be addressed early in a child's life, and bullies must be made to understand that it is wrong.

Colleges and universities need to be held accountable! Fraternities and sororities need to end the practice of hazing. Members who engage in hazing activities need to lose their financial aid and be expelled from college.

Sir. There are lot of great students and talented folks who can’t get a job or work from the bottom. They come from great Universities with work ethics beyond belief. Yet, they are working at jobs on the same level as a dropout or a flunky. Why, they didn’t join a fraternity.

I have a feeling that “I survived my college hazing” isn’t something you need on your resume. Just think, parents spend all that money to send their kid to college and instead of a kid with a degree they get a kid in a coffin!

No reason for fraternity’s or Sorority’s. There are plenty of other clubs and groups to join. My child thought about joining one and I said I didn’t think it was a good idea. Never happened and I am so happy for that. One less thing I need to worry about. 😅

There is nothing that would ever get me to need to be part of something like a fraternity enough to allow myself to be hazed. Plenty of blame to go around including the young people involved. The young people who died would have done the same to pledges the next year. I know these parents are hurting but their children chose to be part of this.

I'm not from the USA and there is no such thing as 'frat houses' in my country, from the outside it seems like a bunch of annoying and insecure people gathering inside a house to do stupid things.
Maybe it's just me but they also seem crowded and uncomfortable in general.

It’s an unfortunate next generation of businessmen usually . America 🇺🇸 is a great country due to the fact we all immigrated here but these are usually the privileged class that were not taught how to work or clean up after themselves. It’s so sad these young men are not taught just to volunteer with friends

I never could figure out the purpose of fraternities and sororities. It seems to me like you have enough to worry about in college without that added to it. Maybe they should just get rid of them altogether. Just read the purpose of the fraternity which sounds great but the cons of joining (death isn’t listed...maybe it should be) would be enough to put me off the idea!

ive been to many o fraternity party and man is the drinking heavy. i have to say the frat i went to was pretty "responsible" at least as much as could be expected. all freshmen pledges were NOT allowed to drink and would dd the girls/brothers back and forth to the party all night as part of their initiation.get caught drinking thats it you're out. i was close friends with two members who had to do stupid things like sorting sprinkles or running the door, or put on the stfu squad so neighbors didnt complain. meaningless tasks as it should be not drinking until you are dead. my heart weeps for these parents who no longer have their sons. what a shame!

Don't underestimate the influence of alcohol which is woven into the sub-culture of the Greek societies.Binging with alcohol is as regular as Church Services on the weekends. It doesn't help to be intelligent and young. Immaturity rules! To be under the influence of alcohol and other substances is the accompaniment to be irresponsible for whatever situation might occur. It is the goal. Should anything go wrong while imbibing in poisons (be realistic) then it just happens without much notice. This made the Greeks very unattractive as something to join. Drinking as competition or as a prerequisite to get into a group, to gain membership in a group of individuals who begin with non-caring, disrespectful contests, shows you what you can expect later, but only if you survive. Is it worth that? If you had good experiences then good but a visit to a University will open your eyes.

My husband and I passed on having children. But we've seen enough (friends and family codding, annoyed and bargaining with their frazzled and weary kids at our table - kids that they don't really see from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. M-F). These days, there is no "personal responsibility" because it's not what's taught in the day care centers who chalk draw and blow bubbles and placate with "whatever, it's all ok." I'm a life-long Democrat -- and HRC's "it takes a village" still makes me cringe. It takes a Mother and a Father to raise and nurture a thoughtful, resilient person. The conversation that will never happen (because it's "anti-feminist") is that American Mothers need to return full-time to the work of mothering the children they bring into this world. Despite the proclamations of Oprah, the NYTs, Ellen, marketers and all the Silicon Valley moguls, you really cannot do it all and do any of it well and American children are getting short shrift while mothers "pursue" and "compete" and live their own lives. It's not working for society. Perhaps anthropologists will be writing about this centuries down the road......
