Expandable Bo Staff Review & Strength Test

  • This week for Weapons Wednesday, we tested out some of the different versions of the expandable bo staff that are available at www.KarateMart...
    I made this video for two reasons:
    1) We are carrying some new versions of the collapsible bo staff, so I wanted to show off the differences between them.
    2) Our customers are always asking how strong the expandable bo staff is. They want to know whether the telescoping bo staff is strictly made for practicing forms or whether they can actually be used for combat. Specifically, they want to know whether the smallest end-section of the extendable bo staff can withstand some impact. So, I tested a couple of them out in this video.
    ➡️ As always, these videos are intended for informational purposes only and you should always check your local laws before purchasing any weapons because restrictions do vary by State, City, Country and Municipality.
    ✨ And don’t forget to subscribe to our channel!

    📆 Weapons Wednesday Series
    Each week, we choose and review various knives, axes, swords, and self-defense weapons to demonstrate their worth and let you decide the winner. We comb through the world of weapons to bring ones we think you'll love, plus our favorites, and show them off each week. Our goal is to give a fair and honest review of each weapon, putting it through a literal battery of tests to see how it performs.
    You can find all the telescoping staffs shown in this video here: www.karatemart...

    This does look like a really cool weapon. What keeps the staff from inadvertently opening up? Is there a twist locking mechanism? Or is the force necessary to extend them more than the normal swing of the arms? I'd hate to raise it and have it open before I'm ready.

    • @Karatemart
      @Karatemart  3 года назад +24

      Great question! Depending on the model chosen, we have a couple of different mechanisms holding the ends in. I’m some other videos, I shake them a little more to show that that isn’t a problem. Thanks so much for watching!

      Dunno, it looks like some kind of mechanism inside whereby if you give it a sharp flip in either way on the vertical axis, it will open, Darth Maul Double Light Sabre fashion, it is as cool as it is actually effective as a weapon

      @@Jmbr-eh6xr It's something so simple, I'm surprised that this thing didn't already exist without them having to create it. They had a great idea coming up with this thing.

    • @Jmbr-eh6xr
      @Jmbr-eh6xr 2 года назад

      It looks like some kind of internal oscillation/gyroscopic mechanism whereby when you move it sharply in a certain way it opens up, because there are no switches, very sophisticated device
      Be awesome shit if there some way to make it auto retract as well, think of the mechanism in automatic umbrellas 🌂, they can auto open and close, but can't retract, that is the difficult part to engineer ⚙⚙⚙🔧🔧🔧, double hydraulics system is one way to do it, challenge is fitting it inside a handle without the device being far too bulky

    One of the thing I like about staff combat is the ability to use it from both the middle like in the video, and from one end and extending my reach and leverage. I guess if they're collapsible, they aren't really designed for that kind of usage, but... is it at all possible? Would the end I'm holding run as much of a risk of warping on contact as the end that strikes? Would that midsection hold up to usage like that?
    Don't get me wrong: this thing looks freaking cool, and the ability to go from staff to dual-wield seems legit! But before I go trying to use this thing in the ways I've been trained to use solid poles, I gotta know if I'm gonna break it in strange places.

    • @Karatemart
      @Karatemart  Год назад +2

      That is an excellent question, Chuck! I invented this about 10 years ago to strictly be used as a compact way to transport your staff too and from tournaments easier. It is the same strength as a collapsible baton, so it can take impact, but it’s not really meant for that and it may bend if struck hard against something very dense. If you are planning on hard strikes that could warp it, I wouldn’t recommend it for that. Thanks so much for watching! I really appreciate it!

    I like the staff although for me personally it would be hard to use at less I had experience with this type of weapon. so I like the one which is made of two parts that you can combine so that if you don't want staff you can have two batons. however there needs to be a mechanism that separates and combines the two pieces instantly just like you did with opening the staff ( you did very good job there by the way). But don't ask me how to actually do it because I have no idea. overall I really like this staff and this type of weapons in general

    So my curiosity is that in a real life combat situation, can it poke well? It your collapsing it like a plastic lightsaber toy simply by pressing it towards the ground, would it do the same if say it was used in a jabbing motion. I get that some things are props and you have to understand the capacities of what you have, but in a real world situation if you have that and nothing else you’re expectations have to be on par. So take a move like a gut jab, would it be effective, or collapse on impact?

      That's a great question, Lena! California started enforcing that warning a while back and because there are approximately 900 chemicals that require the warning, it became next to impossible to determine which chemicals are in the 5000 products we carry. So, to play it say, we did what most other companies have chosen to do at this point and added the warning to all of our products. I'm sorry if that's confusing, but the number of warnings we must account for nowadays is very frustrating for us as well. Thanks so much for watching!

    How does this work with a thrust to the center from the heel of the staff? Can you srike without it collapsing?

    • @Karatemart
      @Karatemart  2 года назад +1

      Hi Stephen! Great question! When you open it correctly, it actually takes a lot of force on a solid surface like concrete to close the ends, so thrusts against a softer surface like a body are possible. I do test thrust out in other videos, so you can see how well it works. Thanks so much for watching!

    I would buy it. Does it have some sort of locking mechanism so that you can use the staff to to thrust or poke at an object as opposed to stiking? It looks like it would retract if you tried to jam the butt of it into an object.

    Yeah but when you unscrew the bottom pieces to join the two pieces together, do the expanding pieces fall out the bottom?

      That’s a great question! They definitely don’t do that on the ones we manufacture here in the US, but I’m not remember how they work on the ones made overseas. Thanks so much for watching!
