Quake 3 - Xaero, Nightmare, No Deaths, 10-Streak

- Me playing the last level of Quake 3 Arena against Xaero on Nightmare skill with no deaths, 10 times in a row.
Xaero can be defeated with no deaths quite consistently. You need to have good judgement of which side he will respawn on next: this can usually be determined based on where he was last killed.
If he is going to respawn on the other side, then you can kill him easily by peeking around the pillars and landing two railgun shots. If you narrowly peek around a pillar, you can shoot at him without him trying to shoot back.
If he is going to respawn on your side, then you should:
* Pick up the railgun pickup so it is on cooldown when he respawns, and thus not available to him.
* Spawn camp one of the respawn points (I pick the one nearest to the railgun pickup).
* (if you have the BFG) Use his respawn sound to determine which spawn point he is at, and spam BFG shots at the appropriate location to quickly finish him off.
* (if you only have the railgun) Anticipate the path he will take after he spawns (usually he walks to get the rocket launcher, because the railgun is not available), and lie in wait to make railgun shots at the path. Try to time it so that he comes into view at about the same time as when your next rail is ready. There are only about five common initial patterns based on which spawn point he respawns at.
I played half of the games using a railgun-only strategy, and the rest using a mixture of the railgun and the BFG. Once you have the BFG, killing Xaero when he respawns on your side obviously becomes easier, but getting the BFG in the first place is a risk, because Xaero sometimes shoots you out of the air with his railgun as you take the jump pads up to the BFG platform. I am still unsure as to which strategy is easier to achieve deathless with overall.
In each of game 2 (1m17s) and game 8 (7m40s), I fire one seemingly pointless railgun shot because the game missed the previous mouse-up event. In game 6 (4m59s), the railgun similarly fails to fire (while I am flying to the BFG platform and zoomed in with Xaero in the crosshairs) because the game missed the mouse click event.
In game 2, as I jump down from the BFG platform (1m14s), I unconditionally spam the BFG at the railgun pickup because if Xaero respawns next to it, I would like him to be promptly killed, else he might pick the railgun up and rail me out of the air as I fall down.
After I decided to try to record a 10-streak, I played about 196 games before I got this video. I attribute the poor success rate to the video capture hurting the frame rate a lot (which took some time to get used to) and causing Quake 3 to drop mouse inputs (which you can never get used to).

You know you´re good when you´re faster than the aimbot himself. I finished all quake levels on nightmare once. And that includes enough rage for a lifetime.
This video is fake though. I think the person recording this made a cut between the selection screen and the actual gameplay. There is no way Xaero doesn´t land a single hit even in the first round.
Xaero can't see you if you are peeking behind a pillar a bit. I used this bug/feature to beat Xaero on Nightmare mode.

i'd have to agree i tried peeking this exact same way and as soon as im BARELY visible he frags me from across the map. unless he's playing an old version or something
Pretty late in commenting on this ancient video, but now that I'm getting back into Q3 after many years, I felt that it was only right of me to give homage to you for pulling off this feat.
I fancied myself pretty good at Q3, back in the day, and even beat Xaero on Nightmare (after much frustration), but this is the definition of "Epic Level".

This is not fake. Xaero's spawn points and behavior are the exact same as Nightmare difficulty. Like if you've played long enough, Nightmare is just as easy as Bring it On.

It's not about hating it's about him editing the game files and changing the AI behavior. Even on hardcore you can barely outpeak the Ai sometimes. Some of us have been playing this game for over 15 years, it's an insult to think it's not fake.

@@jmmj4806 also when I played with him, before taking machine gun he always sprayed me with machinegun from distance making it hard to rail him, but as i can see it here, he just stupidly runs for rails, making it not really trustworthy.. and idk how it is possible to peek from the columns for so long without being killed, he always rail you dare you to peek even by a little bit of your body

Holy shit, and here I thought myself to be a decent player just because I managed to beat him on Nightmare twice, 10:7 and 10:8, lol. Still, I think he's quite a good benchmark to know you're not a complete scrub.

As someone pointed out already, there is a slight cut between the screen select and the actual gameplay. Thus I'm convinced this is fake. The AI doesn't look like nightmare at all

When you're on the opposite platform than him and peek, it's game over. You just have to wait until he comes to you and catch him in mid air, or when leaping to the "squishing platform". I had enough stress while trying to beat him on hardcore, no need to try on nightmare.
Edit: when I keep watching the video, something's not right. How doesn't he hit you when you peek from behind the pillar? He doesn't seem to shoot at all. Not to be that guy, but I'm feeling this is not really the nightmare difficulty, since the match would be more equal.
You still can kill him while he is in the other platform, just do little peaks by timing, you can’t really 1v1 him without cover since he will have 100% accuracy
@@pernomardene6166 the problem is, no matter how much you peek, he will always manage to get a clear shot. He will literally prefire when jumping up from the landing platform, hitting you every single time. You just need to get the first shot and ideally get an insta kill, because when he starts to fire, you're in deep trouble.

Dayum, i remember i tried over 50 times to beat him. I could get decent leads, but he he managed to get the rail gun or the other one, it was lights out. sucker is very accurate.

I managed to beat him, but the score was very tight. A good technique is to wait for him at the beginning, when he jumps high, catch him in the air with railgun.

No, Xaero's accuracy gets worse after he's hit below 50%. If you get the first railshot, you have a chance.

Why is this called fake? I'm way worse than this guy and was able to beat the game in Nightmare in 4-5 maps just controlling some key powerups and taking advantage of how predictable the AI was. Hunter's Lighning Gun was also more fearsome.

Impressive... Thank you for sharing your skills. I'm really curious to know which controls do you use on your keyboard for move and look, including zoom and run/walk. You seem to use "walk" to place yourself perfectly around a pillar : I still haven't found out perfect controls for move+walk+zoom at the same time... My five left fingers aren't synchronised yet to do that. I hope that you are ok to share these controls. Impressive again ! Thanks.
Movement: RDFG (WASD moved to the right 2 places)
Crouch: E (probably not optimal, to crouch and strafe left, I need to simultaneously press E and D with my left ring finger)
Zoom: S (with left pinky) or mouse2
Walk: Shift (default?, but I almost never walk; I crouch instead)
Jump: T or mouse4 (thumb button)
Fire: Space (mainly for minigun/lightning gun) or mouse1
Most of the weapons: H,B,V,C,X,Z,A,Q,W

I agree that E is not optimal but it seems works fine for you ! I'm gonna try your controls (or adapt them : my old mouse only has two buttons...). Last question : for this video, did you use S or mouse 2 to zoom ? I mean it depends on the map ? Or the situation ? Anyway I don't think I could finish this level whitout using my left pinky... So much better : it seems I'll practice and play again and again, knowing I'm not on "nightmare!" yet... but still on "hardcore" ^^ Thanks !
I think I only used S to zoom. A long time ago, I double-bound fire to Space and zoom to S. I think the reason was so that I could zoom and fire without changing my grip on the mouse. As a result, I switch between Space and mouse1 to fire (when shooting Xaero with the minigun from midair, I use Space, but to rail, I use mouse1), but it is completely subconscious, and I don't actually know which one I am pressing unless I look at my keyboard/mouse while I am playing. As for zooming, I played a few test games today after binding mouse2 to "+zoom; say mouse2", and noticed that I only used mouse2 for zooming when shooting rockets.

Man, after many games both against Xaero and in game itself i know this is possible to do what you did here. But what i am suprised here is this Xaero didnt even try to hit you almost all the time. When i play he just fcking shooting from every angle, every position in every place he is and what acrobatic shit he does even i think there is no empty space to land single bullet on me. He looks like he does not want to kill you.

the tactic where I was the closest to finish him was to camp behind the pillar next to the railgun of the platform, wait for him, but it doesn't always work. Sometimes he still fucks me up.

Enable cheats, set game 1/4 speed with timescale 0.25 or whatever value. Playback demo at normal speed, leave the menus at 4x speed for benny hill effect. Profit.

Learning game mechanics to this level of precision is not very uncommon... I see a lot of QQ below my comment, and little else. Game and AI are old and simple by any standard; easy to predict. Only thing tha made AI tough at this time, was their accuracy potential.

I only managed to beat him twice in Nightmare (but ı didn't had any mods or anything ı beated him in default settings)
