0:13 I'm only 40 years old, and I used to ride some of those buses when I was a kid. They called them Grummins buses. The last of these buses in Manhattan were still around in 1992-1993. I used to ride to school on the m102 in Manhattan. Many people did not like these buses because they did not kneel so that it would make it easy for elderly people to get on . But I liked them a lot because they were very roomy and the windows were not tinted so a lot of light could come in. All of the other buses I rode on were the newer RTS buses. The newer RTS buses were very dark inside and many times the automatic door opener for the rear door would not work. I absolutely hated those RTS buses. I believe the fare back then was $1.25. I knew someone that could trick the fare box on MTA buses into taking less money, by inserting a: quarter/ dime/ quarter/ dime/quarter..... In that exact order to pay only $0.95 fare. Some people are so damn cheap.
@@antoniojmonetti Wow. The RTS buses I was riding back in the 90s had those exact same problems. The issue where sometimes you have to hold the doors closed in order for the driver to be able to lock it. Seems like the problem with leaky roofs started later on though. For some reason I remember that the m1 and the m7 (lenox avenue) RTS buses did not seem to have the annoying issues that the m101 and m100 buses running along 125th Street had. Seems like the automatic door opener never worked on the m100 and m101 buses, ever. The RTS buses on those two lines had their own set of problems and if I remember correctly the window tinting was darker then the other RTS buses on the m7 and m1 lines. The bx15 which also ran along 125th Street still had a few of the older buses left on the line.
I remember when all these busses were in passenger service. I remember when all these subway cars were in passenger service, except for the Lo V cars. They ran on the 3rd Avenue El in The Bronx until 1969. I never got a chance to ride it.
Many of these buses still run today. The oldest GMC's from the 60's were indestructible. The Grumman Flxible(spelled correctly) were crap-the frames kept breaking.
I remember that. The City sued Grumman to get their money back. Funny thing though, many other cities and Westchester Co used the Flxible bus for years after NYC got rid of theirs. Either they got a bad batch, or they just couldn't stand up to New York City Potholes.
Today, May 6th, 2019, is the day that the MTA retires the last of their remaining Rapid Transit Series buses. All RTS buses citywide will be exchanged for buses that are more fuel efficient and are electric. Thus ends a generation.
@@ninofromkitchennightmares1497, not for revenue service. They're still officially retired. Also, the driver training units you speak of have been retired and scrapped since then.
The (SIR) Staten Island Railway does indeed still run under the NYCTA MTA because it is one of the five New York (City) boroughs. However, it uses a different fleet of R44M trains by St. Louis solely used for that because it has no side signs and the front rollsigns show the two destinations.
I hated the older RTS buses. They sucked so bad. Crowded as hell. Too dark on the inside from the window tint and rear door openers that almost never worked. The stop request signal would break on some of them too. Plus the back seats in the rear would get so damn hot. In the summertime it was the worst. Especially if the air conditioning failed, which was also common on those buses. The earlier RTS buses definitely sucked ass. I really like the old style grummans buses. But the problem is that when some of them were full of people and they try to travel up a steep hill, the bus could not make it ( maybe due to their age or whatever, I don't know). So everyone had to get off the bus and cross the street so that the bus could get over the hill. Now that is some funny shit!!!!

Yes, technically the (SIR) Staten Island Railway is part of NYCTA MTA, but that uses a different generation of St. Louis R44 called the R44M solely used for the SIR because of its lack of side signs and only front rollsigns that show destinations. This change was made between PreGOH and GOH, where it would still use an R44 PreGOH with side rollsigns. Therefore, the official NYC MTA R44 is retired but the NYC MTA SIR R44M is still in service.
