My favorite has always been the R40 slant trains and the WF R36 cars. I always found the slant cars very interesting. The design and color of the WF R36 cars always made me think of the Flushing Meadow park and Main street lines.
R-44s retired in 2010...however, there are some R-44s still running on the Staten Island Rail transit line. One R-44 car was spared and is now in the New York Transit Museum.
And nobody knew on November 3, 2003 when the R33s and R36s were retired that the R32s and R42s which weren’t that much younger would remain in service until two decades after, which is unbelievable. 😮 Also, the R38s, straight-ended R40As and slant-ended R40s retired 14 years before the 32s and 42s which is also unbelievable. They ran for 43 years and the R40s ran for 41 years. The R32s had the longest such service life in New York City rapid transit operations, carrying passengers through the city for a whopping 58 years and counting. The R32s were built before the R38s, but yet retired after them. They are the oldest rolling stock since the retirement of the Redbird trains and the oldest rolling stock of any metro system in North America, as well as some of the oldest rolling stock of any metro system anywhere in the world. The R32s had survived well past their specified service life of 35 years. They were the last cars built for the New York City Transit Authority - prior to its merger with the Metropolitan Transportation Authority in 1968 - to remain in service. The R32s outlasted the newer R38s, R40s, R42s and New York City Transit R44s. The R32s were the first mass-produced stainless steel cars built for the New York City Subway, the second being the R38 order in 1966-67. By December 20, 1965, 600 cars had been built. The first set ran on the Q Broadway Express/Brighton Local on September 14, 1964.
The cars shown: R32/A, R33/S, R36, R38, R40/A, R42, R44, R46, R62/A, R68/A, R142/A, R143, R160. Between 1962 and 2010, these cars have been delivered. There have been 2 retirements: R33/S and R36 in 2003, R38 and R40/A in 2009. 2010-2020 deliveries: R179, R188 (some converted from R142A) 2010-2020 retirements: NYC Subway (not SIR) R44, R42, R32/A.
@JamaicaQnzFreak nop,in november 1999,the first set of R142 was delieverd, and in mid 2000,it was tesing. "In July, 2000 the first two test trains began revenue testing. The Bombardier test train consisted of cars 6301-6310 and initially saw spotty service on the #2 line. The Kawasaki train, cars 7211-7220, ran more regularly in service on the #6 line. "
There was a prototype of the r142. It was called the r110a built in 1992 for new technology trains featuring destination displays with time, date and orders of the station and computer systems.r142's were first being built and assembled in 1997. Testing on the 2 line began in late 1999 and saw revenue service in 2000. The first was #6310 and the last r142a was #7810. The r142 also saw service on the 6 line before the r142a began to normally run on that line.
(I know this is an old comment) If I’m not mistakened, testing for the R142 started in November 1999 and testing for the R142A started in December 1999. Both fleets started regular service between July and October 2000.
@Rail Fanner the R179's replaced the R32's 5 yrs ago and the R32's didn't retire until 2020 and there retirement run was in 2022 And now we have the R211's Replacing R46's and R211S replacing R44's on SIR Then the R262's replacing R62/A's
microsoftsam200 the other reason why is that newer cars for the IRT (R62 to R188) had a additional function to keep the Electricity Flowing through all the cars when switching tracks (3rd Rail), the other hand the Redbirds didnt have it (cars will lose their electricity between 3rd rail and a different 3rd rail.
