I didn't knew the redbirds but I understand the emotion of someone who travelled each day during so many years in these wagons. We should enjoy more the things we get nearness with. Bought my two sons (4 & 12 yrs. old) MTH Red Bird work train in an O gauge yest. & can't wait to see their faces when they open it for Xmas as they've wanted it last Christmas but I settled for Polar Express model do to feasibility.
Amanda Marcelle my sister when she was young she used to film trains and she saw a lot of Redbirds but after the stop using them she stop filming them her favorite train was the Redbirds

That time I was a baby when I rode it now I am 10. EDIT: I am now 12, I am thinking this video. I still miss you Redbirds… you were legendary to the Subways.
I rode these bad boys every day on the #7 line in the mid 80's. They were quiet, cool, comfortable, and relatively reliable, other than occasional door issues, quickly resolved by RCI's. I knew they were not as new and shiney as the cars on the IND line, but I liked them better anyway.......RIP Redbirds!

But I can say that in our subway when we retired our old subway cars "MR-63" in June of 2018, we don't put them in the water because they were not built to be outside, some are actually bought by companies to be transformed into other stuff and some are just scraped. Although one is preserved in a museum. Did any of your Redbirds were preserved?

redbirds rip 1963-2003 for r36 and rip redbirds 1962-2003 for r33 the old days mannn I used to ride them on every irt line to every borough except staten island ah this gives me memories and ah yes the good old subway series 2000 and some of the Redbirds that stayed until 2010 I rode them on the 2 and 5 lines but before 2003 I rode them on all irt lines
20 other sets of red bird subway cars could have been saved for emergency uses for the 2 and 5 trains including a couple other line for the 4 6 and 7 trains too! High tech trains still have issues sometimes too!
R33 and R36 was supposed to retire at least 2021-2022 but because of the trouble with air conditioning, rust stains, and frame issues it had to be retired early

I lived down in the village and used to go wash square alot even NYU was fun in the early days now the city sucks that is why i dont live there any more

Originaly they came into service in 1963 for the flushing medows Worlds fair as the bluebirds , in 1982 at the peak of the subway Graffiti era they were the first fleet to be painted all white and became known as the white elephants until 1986 when they were sent to the 207.th street yard overhauled and painted with the red scheme in gunner red becoming known as the redbird fleet

They are still servicing, just the fish now!! They were beautiful, wish I'd lived back then. Seems like a simplier life.

Fun fact: The R27 and R30 are also Redbirds but on the B division. They retired from 1993 to 2005
