@Dr.Kraig_Ren I'm from Italy, unfortunately. Italy has quite some "legacy" systems that are almost a century old but in terms of overall length of the network, most metros are quite small here! Rome, despite being the capital of Italy, has only three lines of metro (one of which is only half built, they are still building the other half, soo slow!) 🤦🏽♂️

Due to the blurred meaning of the word "metro", you may have noticed that one or another rapid transit system is missing in the video. Therefore, I recommend that you read the article on which the entire video is based - en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_metro_systems
True, many systems are really on the borderline, such as Fortaleza (included) and Seville (not included) and Tyne & Wear, Newcastle (not included), just to name a few. Sources tend to disagree on those, making it difficult to make a proper listing. Personally I would have included most of the 'light metro' systems as well, which are listed here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Medium-capacity_rail_system#List_of_medium-capacity_rail_systems
Wondering where the Chicagoland Metra is on the list - Metra Electric, specifically. Also the South Shore line to South Bend IN is missing from Wikipedia as well. Also electrified.
@@billythorne Because these are not metro systems, but some rail systems are in this movie and they shouldn't be, e.g. BART, or aren't in this video and they should be e.g. Seville light metro.

Mam prawdziwe poczucie luksusu jeżdżąc warszawskim metrem.
7:32 It's so awful the fact that the most populated area in Belo Horizonte does not have its own line. I born and raise there and I used the metro system just a few times, because it doesn't cover the entire city.
Next year Bangkok will be up from 140 km existing heavy rail metro to include 65 km of new monorail metro system, and another 35 km of heavy rail metro again in the next few years (hopefully). If you include commuter rail (that just opened), the airport link now (30km) and the monorail system, the total length in Bangkok will be 275 km. If all goes well, Bangkok will have 540 km of urban railway within 2030 (IMO 2040 is more realistic)
Jakarta actually also has an LRT line that starts operation before the MRT. Its rail system is a bit confusing, before it has commuter rail system that has launched in the 90s.
China has about half of the world’s metro system by length, though not surprising since the top 20 cities of China by metro pop each have an average of Chicago’s metro population of ~10 million.
Metros don't have to be underground. The first line of what would become the NYC Subway was the 9th Avenue El, which opened in 1868. Like London, Chicago, and many other cities on the list, the line was not upgraded to "Metro" standards until later on. Of course, all of that is moot since the Ninth Avenue Line was demolished in 1940.
Oslo one is wrong. Metro started in 1898 up to Holmenkollen. In 1928 the tunnel section to Nationaltheateret was built and in full operation with Valkyrien as an underground station in-between. The Volvat station was also built underground. In 1966 the eastern part was built with the third rail. But the trains had the same size and when Stortinget was built there were no issues joining the two networks as they were pretty similar.
If considered maglev rapid transportation systems (which should be considered as I saw Wuhu metro listed here which is a monorail system with all stations above the ground currently) there should be Fenghuang Maglev opened May 1st., 2022. Plus there are multiple metro corporations in Beijing, Shenzhen and Hangzhou, at least for these cities, which aren't listed here lol. Great job anyway! :3

At least streetcars & varying standards of BRT are currently BLOWING UP in the US. As well as plentiful 1980s-90s era LRT systems most likely to get most of their rolling stock substantially replaced before the decade is out. To American standards, that’s a transit boom on our end… LA in particular should focus ALL new metro lines/stations along the I-5 & I-405 corridors, with the Bay Area doing absolutely whatever they can to expand accordingly for the folks that live in the Central Valley (as BART appears to moreso be a “regional/commuter/suburban” based system as opposed to a traditional metro) as in recent decades, plentiful Silicon Valley workers live that particular direction due to RIDICULOUS living costs within the Bay Area itself.

@Dr.Kraig_Ren I'm from Italy, unfortunately. Italy has quite some "legacy" systems that are almost a century old but in terms of overall length of the network, most metros are quite small here! Currently 5 Italian cities have a metro system but only Milan's metro is big enough. Rome, despite being the capital of Italy, has only three lines of metro (one of which is only half built, they are still building the other half, soo slow!) 🤦🏽♂️

Rail is not metro
It’s basically the same as other MTR but it has a first class (TBH, I have no idea why people will pay for the first class)
You were referring to the Canton-Kowloon Railway (more particularly the British section). The term “East Rail Line” was not even a thing until 1996.

There ale many inaccuracies and mistakes in this ranking - on the wikipedia.
Wondering where the Chicagoland Metra is on the list - Metra Electric, specifically. Also the South Shore line to South Bend IN is missing from Wikipedia as well. Also electrified.
Sadly, the Carmelit in Haifa and the O-train in Ottawa (among others) do not appear in that Wikipedia list.

China, Turkey and Iran mostly began their growth in 2000s and I am shocked that Poland did not have subway till 1995.
Mam prawdziwe poczucie luksusu jeżdżąc warszawskim metrem.
Aside from Africa I'm surprised that Australia only has one metro system.

China has about half of the world’s metro system by length, though not surprising since the top 20 cities of China by metro pop each have an average of Chicago’s metro population of ~10 million.
this is great!!! Though Boston actually had the first subway system in America not NYC. NYC had urban trains but they didn't run underground
this video contains wrong info
Actually New York City's first metro rails were overground railways in Manhattan. Their first underground railway didn't open until 1903 iirc.
There was that one railway in that guy's basement in 1868 though...
Nice work. Could have excluded Shanghai Maglev since its current frequency is relatively low and is pretty much useless as of now.

Would’ve been interesting to have an overlay in the later decades of EXACTLY how interconnected to INTERCITY (and for the closest spaced regions, commuter/regional) rail lines within the country (or the entire continent in Western EU’s case).
At least streetcars & varying standards of BRT are currently BLOWING UP in the US. As well as plentiful 1980s-90s era LRT systems most likely to get most of their rolling stock substantially replaced before the decade is out. To American standards, that’s a transit boom on our end…
LA in particular should focus ALL new metro lines/stations along the I-5 & I-405 corridors, with the Bay Area doing absolutely whatever they can to expand accordingly for the folks that live in the Central Valley (as BART appears to moreso be a “regional/commuter/suburban” based system as opposed to a traditional metro) as in recent decades, plentiful Silicon Valley workers live that particular direction due to RIDICULOUS living costs within the Bay Area itself.
