I really hate it when a country has all these ideas for flags, but then settles on “three horizontal lines” over and over again.
I agree completely. It especially annoys me when they are just blue, red and white over and over.
Unfortunately, I think the reason why most governments go for extremely simple designs is because 1) They are looking for something anyone could imitate easily and 2) It is cheaper to make simple flags, especially if you are a large and influential nation that needs to make a lot of flags.
Easier to reproduce a simple design. Flags cost money.
Not everyone can be as ostentatious as America or Brazil

Not true, it certainly is by far the coolest wtf flag ever, but some other proposed artistic flags are really pretty awesome too. They're blessed to have a really good choice of designs to choose from whenever they want.

I think the current flag is generally cooler. But I think New Zealand's first flag design is a good one.

I'm Irish and I shudder to think of the alternate universe where Cote d'Ivoire went with a reverse Italian flag.
Hungary, as far as I know, had a period (as part of Austria-Hungary), when they also put a coat of arms with angels on their tricolor. And together with the coat of arms, the Hungarian flag is very beautiful. If they kept it today, it would probably be the most beautiful flag of all today's states (in my opinion).

*5:44* Not sure about a lot of the rest, but I'm pretty sure Romania had a proposed post-1989 revolution flag that was the exact same as it is right now, but with a hole in it, to commemorate a similar flag used by the Romanian uprising (Romanian Communist flag had a coat of arms inside that was cut out by the revolutinaries), sad that it wasn't mentioned.

We're still a part of the British Commonwealth and I believe because of that there are certain laws we can't change. So it's not like we're entirely seperate, though the government basically acts like we are.
