I remember using this station and I'm only 37... Sheish.... How it decayed. Was one of my favorite platforms. Was a great location. Always had music too if I remember correctly. The Bowery Ballroom Theatre was so close. When in the motion of the living city, you forget what they had to bury...Still can't believe it's been closed since 2004.
If you have to cross the track, do so at the low-speed end of the platform. Also, recommend electrically- safe boots if you cross the third rail. Accidents happen.
Its probably connected to all the other lights and would just be a hassle turning them off and they've got so much money at their fingertips to keep it running
Conor Browne The South bound side it still in use, the North bound side is abandoned. Also as to why the lights are on it's probably because the North and South bound lights are on one circuit and thus if you want the lights on in one you need them on in the other.
The Bowery and Canal Street stations used to be 4 tracks, but because only two were used since the Christie Street Connection opened, they decided to consolidate all service to one side in 2004. One of the tracks on the closed side is still active and can be used for train storage or reroutes. The other one has since been removed.
Stuff like this is so fascinating to me. Hell, I'd go to New York just to check out the subway system and the older, more derelict stations like this and Chambers St.
If it's sick what are you doing here commenting this channel is excellent is showing things that must be improved New York is the richest city in the world train stations should not be in this condition this is unacceptable I congratulate this channel for showing us the deplorable conditions hope the city corrects this
This station was used as a transfer point for the elevated line that still existed when it was built or so I was told. Prior to the southern platform being closed, anytime the train stopped at that station I never saw anyone get on or off at that station, it was the most underused station in the system and I often wondered why they bothered to keep it open. Also back then when the subway doors opened, there was the smell of piss in the air so I guess someone must have used the station as a bathroom.
It was so bad, J trains used to skip the station while M trains made the stop. Before half the station was closed, though, the neighborhood underwent a renaissance, ridership picked up, and J trains stopped skipping the station.
this station had a glass tile ceiling in one part, that got sadly covered long ago...yes, i find that sad. it was hoped that putting a major subway stop there would revitalize the place, but no. like the neighborhood it's named for, it was a magnet for negative energy.
I dont understand why the mta doesnt clean, sterlize, bleach, paint ,sanitize ,exterminate this station looks like it can be saved...after all we pay a fortune to get on the trains, which are late, delayed, broke down ,and smell of piss anyways. They take our money and complain that the tunnels needs fixing and we dont have enough funds, they sitting on millions ,and crying broke, stop paying the highest salaries to ceo then you will have enough to fix the tunnels
Josue Garcia its like a foot tall and if you see a wooded plank on the third rail if you touch it it is safe but if you see a sliver third rail it is not protected by nothing so if you see that silver third rail it is dangerous but if you see a brown one it is safe but under that wooden plank is the actual third rail
2:20 the invisible train stopped, then another one came & went.Seriously though,it seemed like whoever filmed this wanted this to sound as scary as possible.
I was homeless and used to smoke K2 in that station. One day i saw some dudes going back there. Thats the J train, side that goes to Brooklyn. I thought they went to tag up. Now i know. Makes me wanna go explore. That station has the most rats, i mean they walking on the platform at all hours. Prob the dirtiest station i know of. Winter 2019 was full of K2 smokers. so the J & Z ran on 2 platforms? I don't remember since I rarely took those trains unless going to the J train Lorimer stop to visit a friend who grew up there. Her parents sold their house ten years ago and moved to PA; she lives off Bedford L stop now.
I went in there today for the first time it's pretty dope "I'm from NYC lots of graffiti sneaking in was a rush but it was worth it to explore the underground
+Jose Ortiz +Josue Garcia Are you blind? The columns said "Bowery". You have to get off the J/Z trains or access the in-service platforms by going to the Bowery and Delancey corner. You have to dive into the tunnel then skip across the tracks (Be aware of the third rail) and then in through an opening. Don't do it though...
Assuming that part of the Bowery station is still apart of the part that is still used, I bet you can find where the sealed off point for those stairs are, and do those tunnels still connect to others?
For the stairs at 2:40, the connecting point can be seen if you use the stairs on the active side. There is a landing with a nondescript door which leads to the abandoned side. As for the tunnels, you can see the connection at Canal Street, if you look down the uptown track towards Chambers Street when a train is coming. The uptown track merges back with the abandoned tracks before Delancey Street.
I'm guessing that would be the platform on the south side of Bowery station. I think those tracks (well the remaining track) goes into the abandoned side of Canal Street station.
@@graphtonix6607 so believe it or not stepping over it is safe. my friend did this just yesterday when we went to bowery and canal street, i’m guessing it’s a protected rail. i would just say avoid the sides and under at all costs

The 3rd rail of the center track on the abandoned side is probably dead, but for the outside track, I would say it's a good chance the rail is still live. Trains can still switch onto the track and go all the way to Delancey Street, but only do so very rarely.
They ride trains that pick up garbage station by station overnight when they're not as many people or as many other trains in service carrying passengers. That's also when they clean, with scrub brushes, soap & a power hose.

The third rail is always next to the regular rails on one side, and in stations almost always on the side the platform isn't. It's pretty obvious, since it'll have a wood or metal covering above it.
