What's your favorite EDC knife!?
Currently an ESEE 3HM when I'm not at work. When at work, I have to stick to an in-pocket folder. Awesome custom work! Has to be an awesome feeling knowing that something you made has a chance at being around many many years from now, being used and loved by someone long after we are gone.

I begin Blacksmit almost one year, Not to build knives but most tools.
But I do want to build a few good (great ) knives for myself and family needs.
I do think I can learn a lot only hope to get 75 percent as your work and yes you have better tooling as I will not invest in for my small needs.
Love your teaching and Sir I hope to learn Thanks
Hey John, I really appreciate that. I hope you make your knives! I'm happy these may help you along the way!
6:43 for my ‘automatic stone washer”, I used a cheap RC car (cost about $20) turned upside down. The ‘jar’ (an old plastic coffee ’can’) fits nicely into the 4 wheels, and I just tape the ‘throttle’ open and set the timer on my phone. Cheap and cheerful.
Lovely EDC knife. I have a similar one, just with a bit fuller blade (semi-skinner?)
Cheers from Tassie.
Thanks for the comment! Cheers from Texas!
Love your channel, I started my knife project in 2020 , but some serious medical issues I had to stop working on them , eleven in all , all stock removal. The blades are finished and working on the scales and liners , I’m going to stonewash them . Your videos have shown me how to finish the spine of my knives. Keep up the great videos !!
Good luck with your builds!
Man, what an amazing little knife. I have built a few knives, but they are crude compared to this little dandy. I’m always amazed at the amount of attention to detail these types of craftsman devote to their projects. Really impressed Red Beard...great!
Thank you very much! Really appreciate that.

very good build, how many times you did quenching?

Hi my friend!! Nice videos!!! How is called the paper/film that you use to do the etche mark????? Do you have some video showing wich paper/film you use??? Thanks a lot!!!!!
Hello Sir! I get them from here - www.tustech.com/admin/home
Thanks a lot my friend!!!
I have a doubt. the acid etched finishes wear off too quickly????? Im between acid etched finishes and satin finishes. Thanks a lot.
@@ivangarcia-ph3tx I find that the acid etched finishes pretty strong and that they wear fairly well. Worth experimenting with both though.
I have been hearing that there is a break-in period on the cork belts. What is your break-in process?
I'm not a master cork-belt-person... but do use them from time to time. I honestly have the same ones from this video!
What I was told was to load it up with compound and hard grind a piece of scrap steel with it for like 15 min... maybe repeat a few times... but that's all I remember. Some people swear by these belts!
Do you quench in parks 50 for O1 tool steel or is that a steel you don't use
I mostly use 1084. It's the most forgiving steel for a home forge heat treat.
Cool
Nice job man , where do you get your steel?
I get my steel from NJSteel barron newjerseysteelbaron.com/
J. on a business note how do you market your knives? I'm just starting out and would like to know how to do this. I'm not looking for a huge market as I still have to work for a living but if I could get a few of my knives out there it would help morale as well as pay for some of the tools I've bought. Any ideas would be helpful. Thanks
Hey Devin, I'd suggest selling at rock bottom prices to your friends and family and co workers. Word of mouth will bring more your way quick.
New subscriber. You make a good video man. Love the knife. I'd EDC it for sure

amzn.to/3OJ11dE - Cheers
I like this knife. How can I get one.
Hey man, thanks for the interest. I'm not taking custom orders, but when I do have a knife finished up I post it on Instagram. Cheers man.
That looks great man! So for the normalizing I was under the impression that 1084 is usually good to go as is and can be heat treated without normalizing? Or did you just do that as an extra precaution since you grinded it out and what not. Very clean build though. Do you do your initial bevels by jig then finish by free hand?
Hey Chris; Yes it's more of a precaution. Some stress can definitely be placed in the blade during grinding. I've been using my bevel jig to remove ~80% of the material; then switching to freehand once I have the bevels established. I find that I can get a better grind and plunge by free hand... with patience.
@@RedBeardOps thanks man good call on the normalizing. I need to look into it a bit more and not rush myself. I actually did the same thing on a couple knives tonight finishing them free hand and they came out awesome. One of them had a deep gouge and a weird grind line from when I used a hand file jig but I was able to save it. Free hand feels good too!
Chris Santos glad to hear it! Once the bevels are established the free hand works well for me!
@@RedBeardOps now I just need to invest in some calipers to keep everything nice and even lol.
@@CuttinChris These cheep ones have been working out well for me. I'm not sure how long they'll last though (I've had them since 2015). amzn.to/2Z6EsUZ
How is two 2 hour temper cycles gonna be different than two 1 hour cycles at the same temperature? I see people do both and I've done both and haven't really seen much difference in performance. I'm interested to hear your thoughts.
Hey Josh, To be honest I don't think there will be that much variance. I like two since it grantees everything gets up to temp. From my research you can go even longer if you want and not see many hits on the rockwell. Would be a good question to pass by the guys on bladeforums.
I've understood that the thicknesses of steel that knifemakers use the only thing longer times would effect for a plain carbon steel like 1080 or 1095 is to ensure the entire thickness of the blade reaches the target temperature...
Thanks for the quick response!
Would like to purchase that for my hubby, notice me!
Hi Catherine! I currently don't have any knives for sale. Sorry about that.

Where can I find the the knife sizes and layout
Hey Daniel, I put a lot of my knife designs for my patreons on patreon. However, I don't think this specific knife is on there.
Is there a way I could get it by chance
Why are you grinding before heat treating?
Hello sir, this can be done either way. I prefer post heat treat now days.
id love this knife but with the handle a little longer and some gimping on the spine.
Thanks for your comment, Kevin. I need to start adding some gimping for sure The handle was designed short so as to be a small 3-finger design.
@@RedBeardOps ive got a three finger knife and its just too little for me personally. i like the look of this one and was thinking more of it being a skinner. i like the belly it has for that task but still small enough to have great control
@@kevinsmith4178 I see I see. I have long fingers too, so it isn't my ideal option either. Have a good weekend sir!

was just gonna say it looked like an izula, then vid said it.
This is a stupid question no doubt and might not get answered because it is an older video but......How on earth do you grind your bevels to the desired mark when the angle is set by the bevel jig? I see makers using bevel jigs but hit the desired bevel line much higher up. Doesn't make sense to me because your angle is set and if you stick to it will not reach that line. You will hit your center line before you get that close to the spine with the bevels. SO I end up with bevels much lower than I see most makers achieve. The only way I can see to raise it is too change the angle of the jig. But again that is the angle of the jig determining where the bevel reaches...aaaaaaah help lol
That's exactly right. You change the angle of the jig or work rest. Some guys have fixed angle jigs made for specific profiles and blade heights. I
@@RedBeardOps Thanks for the reply. It would seem pretty easy to understand but with that being the case I could not figure out why guys would mark the bevels and then grind on a jig and somehow hit the bevel mark. I felt like there was a piece missing. My knives have all been coming out like Moras. They get the job done but aren't nearly as sexy as what I see yourself and other experienced makers produce. So I will adjust my jig! Thanks again.
