Just got a ukulele for Christmas yesterday and I’ve been watching ur channel all day!!! You’ve been helping so much!! I love you so much and can’t wait to get better watching you!!
I find it really difficult strumming with my fingers so use a felt pick but they always feel too stiff (3mm thick) and can sound a bit harsh so I cut them in two with a sharp knife which makes them more flexible and I think gives a nicer sound. Best advice I was given when I got my uke was find what works for you and go with it
I’m really pleased I found this video! I got a ukelele about a week ago and I’ve been practicing non stop, I’ve picked it up really well but I was worried I was doing everything wrong because every tutorial I watch, they were playing with their index finger. I tried that and it felt completely uncomfortable so I’ve been automatically going back to playing with my thumb and getting frustrated with myself for it. Now I know it’s not a wrong way and it’s actually fine to play it that way I can relax, do it the way I’m comfortable with and focus on keeping my strum patterns in Rythym (I’m getting there 😂 my brain just seems to refuse to go up twice in a row when I need to right now)
I found you by accident but I stayed cause I'm getting my ukulele soon. yay. Hope it's something similar to a guitar. And just so you know I'm obsessed with you but in a good way tho.
Same. I actually found this technique where i strum down with my thumb and up with my index idk if anyone else does it but it cured the cuticle problem and u dont even have to use ur nails
Thank you, Elise. I've recently purchased a ukulele, and I've been trying to develop a strum using my index finger, but I can't seem to get the hang of it - not to mention it hurts like a bugger after awhile. I was really starting to get discouraged with this because most ukulele players use their index finger for strumming, so I figured I might as well give up because in the ukulele world, it's the index or nothing - at least that's what I thought. But now I see that's not the case. I played guitar years ago and had developed a pretty mean strum using my thumb. I even preferred that over a pick. It just seemed so natural to me. So thanks to you, from now on, I will use my thumb on my ukulele and if anybody complains, I'll say talk to Elise! 😊
Thank you so SO much for making ur tutorials! I’ve only had my ukulele for a week or two and I’ve been trying to find the best tutorials I can. Ur videos have been absolutely PERFECT! Thank you SO MUCH!

I just got that exact Luna ukulele a week ago in Hawaii!! Trip of a lifetime, and hearing them play it there was the most peaceful thing ever and I need to learn to play it!!
I just want to say that I have watched a multitude of strumming instruction videos and none of it clicked for me til I watched yours. Thank you so much. It has made a huge difference in my playing. Now if I can just improve on those damn chord changes.
So glad you made this video! I've been strumming with my thumb ever since I started playing because it feels most natural, everyone else I know uses their index finger and I thought I was going crazy or strumming completely wrong!
THANK YOU!! It is so hard to find a video that shows strumming slowly and from different angles! They all expect you to know how to do it without breaking it down like this. I was about to give up on playing uke because I could not upstrum. You have honestly and truly saved my ukes from Craigslist.
So I saw your sisters video of her one year comparison for playing the ukulele. So that's how I found you, this video was super helpful considering the fact you didn't think so. you would think strumming would be the simple part haha. Thank you so much! Going to check out your other videos :)
I literally got a uke and I got home jumped on my bed and was on your channel till 3:30 am practicing “the judge” all night and now I can play it throughly and it took me only one night to understand the chords. You are such a huge help.
Elise I asked this yesterday 😂 but do you have any advice for becoming more confident with your voice and not getting scared? Ily and Eden!!❤️💕💕💕❤️❤️❤️💕
Loved this video! I've seen several videos that basically said DO IT THIS WAY, and I've been having so much trouble! I'm a total newbie (have had my uke 5 days) so I want to make sure I'm not picking up bad habits, but it's wonderful to see that there isn't always one right way. Your way seems so much more comfortable for me!!!
Thank you! Gotten a ukelele as a gift since I've wanted one for years, never played any string instrument and honestly felt like an idiot having to RUclips how to strum, but you were really concise and I'm going to have fun flopping my thumb up and down hopefully in a sort of musical way
I use the claw method because, it’s the most comfortable for me. It’s where you press your index finger and your thumb together and make a claw with the rest of the fingers. Then you strum up and down with the fingernails of your index finger and your thumb. The Ukulele Teacher has a better explanation of this in a video he made about strumming a uke.
Thank you so much for making this content for your viewers. Just bought an enya uke and am really excited to use your lessons to learn how to play. Much appreciation!
I have long fingernails so when I started playing I found it difficult to strum “normally”. So I just kinda went with it and ended up finding myself strumming with my first three fingers (pointer, middle, & ring finger) and now it feels weird to do it any other way so I’ve always stuck with it. Idk if others strum the same way or not but it works for me¯\_(ツ)_/¯
If anyone is interested in playing the Ukelele the greatest results that ive ever had was with the Arthurs Uke Blog (just google it) definately the most incredible plan that I have ever tried.
Thank you Elise, I have just bought a concert ukelele and your strumming options were fantastic. I now need to choose my preferred option and begin. Owen from Wales UK
Hah I strum with my pointer finger! Also Elise I'm learning "The Judge" on ukulele, your video on it was very very helpful. I watch all ur vids to help me learn both uke and guitar, so thank you.
I've been watching you for a while and I just got my ukulele and you've been helping me out so much, I've learned The Judge and some other songs by far but it's only my third day. I got my ukuelele 3 days ago. And I've been struggling so much with my fingers positions for strumming, cause I used 3 fingers and I don't even know why I just couldn't find a comfortable way to do it, because either one of my fingers got caught in some string or it just didn't sound really well. And after watching this video I found 2 potential ways to strum easier and more comfortable. Thank you💚
Jackson Morris Not certain about the points made but ,if anyone else wants to uncover easy ukulele songs to play try Pycanta Amazing Ukulele Protocol (do a search on google ) ? Ive heard some unbelievable things about it and my mate got excellent results with it.
Elise - I’ve been playing guitar since 1979 and several other stringed instruments since around 2000. I’ve recently developed an interest in the ukulele and found this video while trying to figure out how to generate more volume while strumming. It’s really helpful, so thank you! Anyway, I’ve got a suggestion for you. You said you don’t like the sound of the ukulele when you strum it with a pick. In that case, try strumming with one of the two more rounded edges of the pick rather than with the point. You might *still* not like the sound, but I guarantee you that it will be smoother and more pleasing to your ears. Let me know what you think …
Saviour! I use the index finger now as it is easier. Thank you for these lessons. I’ve been watching these all night. I got my sisters uke because she doesn’t use it and your my saviour! Maybe someday I’ll be as good as you 💗love you and your channel ☺️
I just got a ukulele yesterday and I’m so excited to learn how to play! I’m going to be watching a lot of ur vids!! I heard that the song “I’m Yours” is really easy so I’m going to watch your tutorial on that! and my favorite way to strum the ukulele is also with my index finger. Also just thought you’d know that you are such a fantastic singer and ukulele player! I think I’m going to learn a lot from you!!🥰🥰🤪🤪🙂🙃
I personally use all my fingers to strum except for my index finger, I don't know why but it awkwardly stays up and it makes my hand look like those hand foam things supporters wear. I've always thought it's weird but maybe I'm not the only one in that case who knows! haha
I got my uke a few days ago and tried strumming with my index finger because I always saw that way in your videos but since I also play the guitar I always automatically switch back to strumming with my thumb. That's the most comfortable way for me
Okay, I find it most comfortable to strum with my index finger but, when ever I do that I get really bad blood blisters on my finger. Does anyone else have this problem?
PAY YOUR FUCKING TAXES You could be strumming too hard, try strumming softer. You will get blisters no matter what from playing the ukulele/guitar but if they're so bad that they start to bleed, you're usually strumming too roughly :)
Thank you so much, I got a ukulele for christmas and I didn't know how to play but then I found your channel and now I know how to tune, strum, change my fingers to the right chords and all of your videos helped me so much thank you!!😊
This video has been very helpful. I've only had my ukulele a few weeks and i'm loving it and I've learned a few songs but i'm still not happy with my strumming. I also use the index finger as I find it the easiest way to strum but until watching this video, I never curved my finger. I would just use the skin of my finger for up and down while keeping the finger straight. Bending the finger and using the nail more than the skin has helped my strumming sound a lot more consistent. I'm going to practice using the nail for the down strum and the skin for the up strum like you seem to do now as I think that'll work best for me also. I might need to file my nails though as they get stuck on the strings occasionally hahaha
I think the phrase, "Whatever works best for you" is specious. That phrase is only valid for me after I become aware of some different possibilities. I like the feel and sound of the thumb going down, but not the sound of my thumbnail on the strings going up. You have given me an idea to avoid the nail sound using the index finger that I'm going try. Thanks so much!
Thank you so much! I was told that the index could be used but when ever I did the notes came out “dead”. I now know it was bc I was using like the inside of my finger and it not being in full contact with the strings. As soon as I tried the way you showed it sound 1000x better! Thank you again! Love you channel!
I've always used 4 of my fingers (all except the thumb) and just kinda used to ends of my fingers but sometimes my nails and the bottom idk if anyone else does this but I know no different I've done it for years
I just got a ukulele yesterday, and could not figure out a comfortable way to strum. Using my index finger is so much easier and it plays so well! Thank you 😊!
Hey Elise! How are you doing? Your videos helped me a lot on playing my ukulele, and you inspired me too! Thank you for making videos and helping thousand of people, you deserve so much more! Lots of love!❤
ELISE PLEASE HELP ME When I strum with my fingers it usually gets caught between the strings Please help me with my problem And usually I normally strum with a pick since I couldn't strum with fingers correctly
I find it really difficult strumming with my fingers so use a felt pick but I found they they feel a bit too stiff as they're about 3mm thick so use sharp knife to cut them into 2 which makes them more flexible and I personally think gives a better sound. Find what works for you and go with it is the best advice I've been given since getting my uke
hey Elise! today i got my ukulele and wanted to learn every way to strum possible and wanted to watch your video, i tried every way in this video and turns out i loved your way to do it! even tho ima potato at the ukulele im getting better
I was thinking about getting a ukulele when I saw one of your videos... then I watched almost all of the tutorials and you inspired me to just go for it and get it, thank you so much you are amazing😂💕
Thanks Elise , that was just the lift i needed to get started , those little pointers make a huge difference when you're learning . Thanks for sharing this and helping me along , this video was wonderful .
I DO IT YOUR WAY TOO AHHH. Been watching dozens of videos tryig to change my strum thinking it was wrong or weird but you do it the same way! Yay i love your videos theyre so great
I strum with my thumb going down, and my index finger going up. I also tried ur way Elise, with the index finger only, and it sounded pretty good so I'ma practice that😊 Thanks!
Finally, a really easy way to strum, thanks so so much. Other said to had to use your pointer finger, the flesh part of it. The nail part is perfect!! yeah!! thanks so much!
Tbh i like using my pick but my dad always gets mad at me for doing it, he says its too loud But I literally can't strum with my fingers, every method hurts and I can't get all the strings, and i think its bc i have unusually long fingers and the skin above my nail is rly sensitive (i burned them on the oven lmao) Can anyone help me pls
WOW! I got an Ukelele today, got home and looked up "ukelele tips" and found your video and guess what. EXACT SAME UKELELE I JUST BOUGHT TODAY!!! what are the odds! i prefer the index finger method btw,
I strum with my pointer and middle fingers, with my nails. Like, kinda flat on my nails, I guess? And then going up I use my thumb the same way. I just got my ukulele very recently, but that's what I found comfortable. Also, thank you so much for your videos, even though I just got my ukulele like 3 days ago, I can already play Riptide by Vance Joy and Ghost by Halsey because of you 😊 Thank you!!!
Thank you so much just from the beginning. Its taken me like 5 or 6 videos just to find one that actually shows how to strum and which part of your fingers you're using. Every other video either just doesnt show it or goes super fast as if "For new ukulele players" means "You better know how this works"
I got my first ukulele today and I am sooo excited to learn how to play! This video was so helpful- I prefer the second method too. I will definitely be watching lots of your videos!
I have your signature travel ukelele, your signature strap and *very short nails.*. I am learning to stum. When I strum with my index video, the strings don't soud clear, and my skin above my nail hurts. With the 2 other methods I can finally produce clear strumming! Thank you so much!
Finally someone said you can strum a ukulele with a pick! As a guitar player that HATES strumming without a pick, it felt VERY wrong strumming the ukulele with my hands. Btw ur tutorials are amazing
I recently got a ukulele and was strumming with my thumb! I found it very awkward when I strummed with my thumb and started looking for other ways. I just found your video and I actually really like to now strum with my index video! Thank you for the help! ☺
i was always used to using my thumb in strumming because im more comfortable with that but i always see other people play it with their index, so now i decided to look it up. nice to know that thumbs are accepted : D
Thank you so much!!!! I’ve always thought that my ukulele wasn’t tuned or something but turns out it was just the way I strummed!! I use my index finger now and I’m loving the sound thank you so much this video really helped me out!!! 👍
Very nice video. There are a lot of different schools of thought on proper strumming techniques. Jake Shimabukuro doesn't look like he rigorously abides by any of them, so there is that! I'm learning to play for my own entertainment and so I can teach my granddaughters once they are old enough. Is there a correct/formal/proper way to strum? You are a cute, charming, eloquent, and articulate young lady. I appreciate your levels of clarity and maturity in your tutorials. Please keep up the great work!

I personally use all my fingers to strum except for my index finger, I don't know why but it awkwardly stays up and it makes my hand look like those hand foam things supporters wear. I've always thought it's weird but maybe I'm not the only one in that case who knows! haha
Maureen Barbaud I DO THIS TOO!! 🤠
Everia Okay, I'll try. Thanks for the feedback.
same
If youre a beginner, this usually happens and as time goes on your fingers willl eventually get used to it so don't worry, it's normal.
I strum with my thumb and I’ve been acquiring blisters but I’m a beginner so I expected as much🤷🏾♀️
Thank you so much, I got a ukulele for christmas and I didn't know how to play but then I found your channel and now I know how to tune, strum, change my fingers to the right chords and all of your videos helped me so much thank you!!😊
You should try a foam pick instead. It should sound better! 🙂
Sooo If you strum down with you thumb and go back up with your fingers it felt comfortable to me tbh but idk I think it’s weird
I somehow strum it like I’m holding a pick, though I’m not. I strum both my Uke and my Guitar so..
Disclaimer: I am a beginner, so don’t jump on me!
Carla Popa that’s how I do it too! And I’ve been playing ukulele since 2014 and guitar since 2016
ME TOO
I love how you show me the details. I've seen like 5 different vids but this one is clearly the best. thanks lots !
Anyone watching in 2019
Also I always find down with my fingernails and up with my thumb nail
Misty 31 :D yes right here 😊
2020 😁
I am watching in 2020! 😁
June 2020
yess that’s what i do
Her channel helped me with my ukulele so much! Thank you Elise!
THAT COMMENT HAD DAN ON ITTT
Hah Hah omg I saw it to and looked in the comments to see if I was the only one
That is the comment I was looking for
yee the phandom my phamily
Karen cmon why you keep taking the kids
Thank you so much! I was told that the index could be used but when ever I did the notes came out “dead”. I now know it was bc I was using like the inside of my finger and it not being in full contact with the strings. As soon as I tried the way you showed it sound 1000x better! Thank you again! Love you channel!
I've always used 4 of my fingers (all except the thumb) and just kinda used to ends of my fingers but sometimes my nails and the bottom idk if anyone else does this but I know no different I've done it for years
Shola Mason your profile picture....we are soul mates
I know I'm replying 2 years later, but that's exactly what I do
I do that and it bliters my ring finger if I mess up a little and my skin strums the ukulele
same same ! glad to see others do it too
I just got a ukulele yesterday, and could not figure out a comfortable way to strum. Using my index finger is so much easier and it plays so well! Thank you 😊!
I strum like this:
Down - middle
Up - thumb
Like if you do this too
Hey Elise! How are you doing? Your videos helped me a lot on playing my ukulele, and you inspired me too! Thank you for making videos and helping thousand of people, you deserve so much more! Lots of love!❤
who else uses a pick to play? i feel like not too many people use picks
alicia has a migraine I don’t even use one with my guitar, I actually hate the sound. But it sounded good on the ukulele.
I got a ukulele for Christmas, and I've been using a homemade felt pick to strum since I got it. Its worked out well.
ELISE PLEASE HELP ME
When I strum with my fingers it usually gets caught between the strings
Please help me with my problem
And usually I normally strum with a pick since I couldn't strum with fingers correctly
Same tbh
I feel so stupid omg
You got tiny fingers bruh
Try not to strum as hard and only let the tips of your fingers/fingernails strum against the strings
태형김 if you really need to get a foam or felt pick those sound better or glide over the strings down press down too hard on them
I find it really difficult strumming with my fingers so use a felt pick but I found they they feel a bit too stiff as they're about 3mm thick so use sharp knife to cut them into 2 which makes them more flexible and I personally think gives a better sound.
Jesus loves you all 💕
He loves you too❤❤
I was thinking about getting a ukulele when I saw one of your videos... then I watched almost all of the tutorials and you inspired me to just go for it and get it, thank you so much you are amazing😂💕
ahh i have a weird habit of using the pas of my thumb to down strum and and the pad of my pointer finger to up strum 😂
I do the same thing!
Same here. I get a better sound out of my songs his way. Maybe it's the ting of the A string on the upstrums...idk
I ordered your signature concert ukulele and it just arrived today! I’ve been learning some chords, Sony’s and strumming patterns!
Did you self teach yourself the ukulele?
Yes:)
Thanks Elise , that was just the lift i needed to get started , those little pointers make a huge difference when you're learning . Thanks for
sharing this and helping me along , this video was wonderful .
For me I like to pretend I’m holding a pick but I use my fingers. Idk how to esplain
:3 :3 same! I’ve done that since I started playing ukulele in 2014. I also strum guitar that way, which I have been playing since 2016.
thank you soooo much its my first time to play ukulele and idk how to strum it and you save my lifeeee and now im a big fan of you!
is it bad that i strum with all four fingers then come up with the thumb?
No, not at all! If it works for you, keep rocking it!:)
morgan moss That's exaclty what I do
Yay! Glad you said that - I thought i was developing a bad habit but I find it SO much easier...
I DO IT YOUR WAY TOO AHHH. Been watching dozens of videos tryig to change my strum thinking it was wrong or weird but you do it the same way! Yay i love your videos theyre so great
I strum like this: I use my index finger to go up whenever there’s an up in the pattern and then I use my thumb to go down
I strum with my thumb going down, and my index finger going up. I also tried ur way Elise, with the index finger only, and it sounded pretty good so I'ma practice that😊 Thanks!
aw you're so sweet :')
Finally, a really easy way to strum, thanks so so much. Other said to had to use your pointer finger, the flesh part of it. The nail part is perfect!! yeah!! thanks so much!
Tbh i like using my pick but my dad always gets mad at me for doing it, he says its too loud
But I literally can't strum with my fingers, every method hurts and I can't get all the strings, and i think its bc i have unusually long fingers and the skin above my nail is rly sensitive (i burned them on the oven lmao)
Can anyone help me pls
El77 same
I’m a complete beginner who started yesterday and this vid helped me so much! Thx!
Best strumming video I’ve seen all the other ones I watched weren’t really clear but this helped a lot tysm!
Thank you so much for making this video I have had problems in the past with strumming but using my index finger made it so much easier for me!
