Hi. I bought a guitar after my wife died and couldn’t really get the hang of it I bought a tenor ukulele a couple weeks ago and have done more on that in a couple weeks then my guitar. I love your teaching technique. I’m not a patient man but trying to learn to be. I’m in Pocahontas Iowa. Retire chief of police I was in law enforcement for 35 yrs. My wife was a nurse for 33 yrs Thank you for what you do.
Wow! Thank you both so much for your service to our communities through your work in the police force and your wife in the medical field! I hope you are still playing ukulele!
Bernadette. I first tryed four saprano uks. Then just a week ago bought a Enya EUR-MAD Concert uk. And I’ve learned more in a week than month or more in a saprano uk. I just L O VE. L O V E. this concert. The price was my leavel and the tone is great and after a day or two stays mostly in tune. The first two string go out mare than the bottom twoooo. I almost bough5 the Benedett one but bad revieus and happy got this on in the nathural mahogany
Testimonial: My strumming was awful until I discovered the Bernadette Teaches Music method. I listened. I watched. I learned. And now I can strum. No joke. This is real! 100% true. I was so impressed I got the hooded top!
I love watching your beginner tutorials even now. 3 years ago, today I discovered you on YT and started my uke journey. Love you to bits, Ms. B 🥸💙🦜 Thank you for everything 🥰
Hi, I bought a Kala tenor ukulele and am having a great time learning with Bernadette. I’m making daily progress far beyond what I thought possible. Thank you so much, Bernadette, from East Braintree, Manitoba, Canada 🇨🇦
I just want to say you're an amazing teacher. I bought my ukulele in 2020 but I never played it because I was searching for the "perfect" song without learning basics! I started with your 30 days challenge this week and it is so well curated and exciting that I can't wait for my daytime work to end so that I can spend time learning ukulele.
I'm new here but girl you are fantastic. I was about 12 l was learning how to play the ukulele but then l left l had to change school. I asked my parents to buy a ukulele they bought a gitar oh well ..but l still know some notes l know to tune a ukulele its. My dog has fleas. When you are showing your notes l still rember . Great now lm going to continue where l left. Thank you...you are a perfisonelle.
Cannot thank you enough- After only 3 weeks I can now play Over The Rainbow by the late Iz... because of you!! 3 weeks! And my 3 young boys all sing with me as I play! Quality moments created because of your gift of teaching! Thank you! And I hope you have found love again! 🌸❤️👍🇦🇺👌💫🦋😁
My boyfriend bought me a ukulele for my birthday recently and I have been watching a lot of your videos. You are absolutely incredible. I have learned SO much from you in such a short time. Thank you so much for what you do. You are an amazing teacher and I am forever grateful for you and your work!
Just starting latterly just index and finger made just all the difference. Today is 8/11/24 . I have been looking at this instrument for a year just now trying to do the everyday for 40 days.
Thank you! I played guitar about 12 years ago and quit after 6 months. Hurt my hands and was so hard to play cords. I love the sound of the Ukulele and found for a big guy like me playing cords is a ton easier because of the space between strings on the fret board. This helped so much as I'm used to a pick on guitar
Hi, I bought the Enya Nova carbon fibre Ukulele after watching a review you completed about it. I am loving it and looking forward to learn how to play the Ukulele and buy even more of them. Your lessons are great and easy to understand. Thanks for sharing them!
I can't thank you enough for sharing these videos , I am so so greatful to you..only because of your videos i learnt Ukulele.. I gave up so many times in the past.. LOVE from INDIA💖
Wow, such a wonderful "How to" video! Wish I had had this simplified instruction at the onset of my ukulele journey. Simple, basic, and to the point instruction is what all learners appreciate. Thank you, Bernadette! 💗🎸🎵
Love that you are playing an Enya... I have three Enyas and all three are so sweet sounding! Your course (so far) is nice and easy to follow, and I really appreciate that- nothing worse than someone playing a $1500 uke and more interested in getting their licks in and showing off rather than really trying to show the important stuff. I have had a difficult time figuring out how to position my fingers and the angle for the strum... at least, until now! Thanks!
I am 66 and have Parkinson's Disease -I am teaching myself to play so I can play a song for my grandkids- I have taken day 1 about 3 times now and am getting the rhythm finally- it's a slow process for me but this tutorial is wonderful - thank you!
Just started my Ukulele journey about three weeks ago. Found your tutorials on RUclips. Let me say, you are wonderful teacher and I find it amazing how you do all those things at once. Thanks. Trying to learn some new chords and I am trying to learn the D chord. There is not enough room between frets with my little chubby fingers to get it right. Any recommendations on an ukulele that might have more room between frets. Thank you so much for all you are doing. Peace. William
I really appreciate that you often remind your viewers to look up and see what you are doing. 😅 I tend to play the tutorial in the background while i'm trying to get it right. 😂 Very good that you do that. Almost like you caught me not paying enough attention 😂
Love this tutorial series, im currently learning via Hal Leonard and I've pretty well mastered the first book ASIDE from strumming cause I find it so difficult. Most resources dont properly break down how to position your hands from strumming so THIS IS A GOD SEND!
Yeah I record myself and post I like having another set of eyes that can see me making a mistake and saying hey you are not doing that right. I am yet to get that but I hope I do at some point. I post to see and learn and I hope to get others interested in whatever small way. I want people to learn. I want the world to be filled with music and joy and people wanting to sit together and sing and play music. Going to happen? Probably not but we can always get closer to a goal.
Hi, Thank you for making these videos. I use your videos to supplement my teaching. Right now I am doing a ukulele unit with 4th grade. A few of my female students want to know where you got your beautiful sweater from? I said I would ask. I had to laugh. That's what my students are worried about. :)
Aww 🥰 thank you so much!! I got it from a shop called Myracle on Etsy! But you can look on Etsy and there are other vendors who have similar ones. Say hi to them for me!
I started watching your videos a couple years ago, but when the pandemic happened, so did a lot of other stuff...we moved, and then moved again...the vaccine caused my autoimmune issues to go crazy and I had joint issues for a WHILE. Ironically, now I have covid, and being quarantined and bored out of my mind is what is bringing me back to the beginning. I have a question: what do you do with the arm you strum with? Do you rest it on the side of the instrument or just sort of hold it out in space? I do find some positions difficult because of joint pain, but also because I have a curvy figure...I have found a strap helps somewhat.
Hi Bernadette, I am a beginner at both the guitar and the ukulele. Your videos are inspiring, friendly and fun to watch. Thank you very much for that. I started with this ukulele strumming course today and my question is, if the same technique can also be used on the guitar or is this something else?

Hello Ms. B, how is my ukulele is soprano I used A, D, F, B tunning. Should I change it into G,C,E,A? I have tried it but the A string on my ukulele it's too tight 😅 cuz I used the old uke for practice.
Thank you. What is your recommended nail length on men? I studied playing lute, with that there is no nails. Classical guitar I found to have long shaped nails (which is not a normal male thing). Uke for men nail length?
Amazing video but I have one question is the nail supposed to make a sort of small scratching noise on the strings at all because I play softly sometimes and can hear it if anyone can help me that would be amazing!👍
I know this must sound like an odd uke problem to have, but I can't strum while changing chords. I get really confused. If I am doing the island strum, I can only change at the end of the strumming sequence. If you have any ideas or advice, please tell me as I would really appreciate it. 😅
oh wow! This is very helpful! I know pressing the cords is suppose to be painful but my finger (the skin on the side of the nail) hurts when strumming. Is it normal or am I just doing it wrong?
Hmm 🧐 I’m not 100% sure because I would need to see you, but I think you should strum where the fingerboard and the body meet. If you strum on the sound hole, you’ll experience pain. Also try to be a lot softer when you strum
Hi, I'm beginner at ukulele. And I have a hard time with strumming down. Every time when I strum down with my lower part of nail it accompanies by "skrt" sound. And I have no idea how to get rid of it. Do I need to just practice more or anything else? Also I'm sorry if there are some mistakes, because english is not my first language.
I’m finding it very difficult to use the index finger to strum. I often end up using my thumb for the down strum and the index for the up. Is this okay? 😢
i understand that this video is almost a year old, but i thought i'd call into the void of the comments section to ask what I'm to do if i,, legitimately do not have any nail where she's strumming from. i've bitten my nails my whole life (i've been desperately trying to stop for about 3 years now but there's nothing that prompts it and i hardly even notice when it's happening anymore), and there's skin in front of them as well as a thick section of skin either side, so i have very narrow nails and no possible way to touch the nail to the strings without catching the strings with my knuckle. really hoping someone could help me with this issue, as strumming with the skin on the side of my fingers is really painful

Yes, I have not had uke lessons since I was a young girl, and our teacher never taught basics...so these basic moves are very important!! Mahalo!!🌈❤️😘

I strum with my knuckles for a more muted sound. It does damage if you don’t wrap them in something so be careful.

Practice 😁 i practice at least once or twice a day until i don't get confused anymore.
Thank you so much. My hand will go down but I can’t strum up
Do you have any tips on how to go about working on loosening my tight wrist and forearm aside from the obvious one being practice?

You can buy felt picks that are intended for strumming ukuleles. That might be a solution for you.
Anyone have any tips for this problem? I keep getting my fingers caught under the strings while I strum…
