So, disney had literally no faith in this movie and gave a historically low budget so Whoppi Goldberg and Whitney Houston put nearly $4.3 million into the movie so they could pay the extras and have Brandy's dress done.

Cinderella is a European tale, so Cinderella is a diss nick name. Cinder means ash. Ella means girl. They call her Ash Girl. So, when she told the prince her name, he said, "excuse me?" for that reason. Common is short for commoner. She and her father were common, but he was wealthy as a successful businessman. The step mother is high born. AKA first class, she married him because she was broke.

How don't know how true it is, but I read once that Cinderella is a mistranlastion of the orginal french name Cendrillon. And apparenlty she was nickname that way because she was :'' Couverte de cendres et vêtue de haillons'' which translates She was cover with ashes (Cendre) and dressed with rag (haillons). So the combination of Cendre and haillons give Cendrillon in french. Bu I don't know if that's the true reason of her name of just a reason it was giving in a re-edition that tales.

@@SuperShiningDawn Actually, the first published story of "Cinderella" (discounting the ancient fables on the same theme) was Italian, where the name Cenerentola was derived off of cenere = ash. So while I wouldn't be surprised that Perrault added the haillons part in his French retelling, I'm not sure if the English versions necesarrilly took over from the French, the Italian or the Grimm's or completely elsewhere - it might've just been a creative translation of any of them :)

Richard Rogers and Oscar Hammerstein II were a very famous musical theater writing duo. They wrote this musical as well as many others in the 20th century. This was on written for TV in the 50s and has been on the stage since. When they were making this movie, I believe they wanted Whitney to play Cinderella, but she wanted brandy to have that opportunity. They were going for a colorblind cast with this project to let the talent be the main focus. This is my favorite movie of all time and I'm so glad you're reacting to it!

Having been around the musical scene growing up while in high school and even when I was little when my older siblings were in high school, Rogers and Hammerstein was very frequently chosen for the yearly musicals that we would perform with live musical orchestra (which is where I lead my talents on three different saxophones). The first time I saw this particular movie, I was waiting for the dance breaks specifically because that's when wind instruments like myself would have the most fun because it was lesser repeatative lol. I definitely picked up in common tempo and key signatures throughout all the R & H pieces I performed and have seen throughout the years.

He didn't really care if it was the same girl or not, as long as the prince got married.
Grand Duke: Sire, this slipper may fit any number of girls!
King: That's his problem. He's given his word; we'll hold him to it.
Grand Duke: No, no, Your Highness. I'll have nothing to do with it. (pouts)

This movie was in the works for quite awhile since Whitney Houston was first approached to play Cinderella but by the time they got everything in order to start, she felt she was too old to play the role and wanted Brandy to be Cinderella! Also the casting for this movie was completely color blind. There’s a documentary on here about the behind the scenes of creating this movie and it’s really interesting!!

  • @geordanbader

The soundtrack remains unreleased because at the time in 1997, Brandy's team thought it wasn't on brand (lol) for her to continue her popularity. Whitney said in an interview that not releasing the soundtrack was one of her biggest regrets, BUT IT WAS RECORDED. I was really hoping they would release it along with the anniversary and when it was added to Disney plus!! No one asked, but I love the history of the making of this movie, so......Jason Alexander took the part of Lionel, but said that he didn't want to be a copy of George Constanza, so they changed the script. Whoopi was dissatisfied with the jewels they offered, so she personally asked Harry Winston to lend the production some. An executive at Disney really wanted Jewel to play Cinderella and just have a black fairy godmother. Production couldn't afford extras on the last day of shooting and the same Disney executive didn't support it, so Whoopi sent cash in an envelope with a note that said "here is my contribution to the extras." The history of this project fighting an uphill battle and all these actors coming together to see it through really speaks to me and here is an in depth oral history of the film: www.shondaland.com/inspire/a13138172/brandy-whitney-houston-oral-history-cinderella/

Brandy was about 17 or 18 when she did this movie. Also, this is actually a remake. Rodgers and Hammerstein refers to the duo of Richard Rogers and Oscar Hammerstein. They were a very successful musical theatre writing team. Some of their well known Broadway shows include Oklahoma!, The King and I, and The Sound of Music. "Falling in Love with Love" was written by Richard Rodgers with his previous songwriting partner Lorenz Hart for *The Boys From Syracuse* (1938), based on Shakespeare's *The Comedy of Errors.* The opening song, "The Sweetest Sounds" had both music and lyrics by Richard Rodgers, and was originally written for his pioneering musical *No Strings* (1962), about the romance between a white man and a black woman (originally played by Diahann Carroll). The final song, "There's Music In You," was written by Rodgers & Hammerstein for the film *From Main Street to Broadway* (1953).

For most people when they see that scene, they’re very confused that almost everyone is wearing blue. So what makes Cinderella stand out from the crowd? Nothing but her amazing personality and beautiful smile. We see the step sisters wearing bright and bold colors to try and catch the prince’s attention, but looking past the crazy colors and even the hundreds of other people wearing blue, the prince was able to find his true love in the crowd. It’s so romantic it makes me tear up! 😍😭

Rogers and Hammerstein were a musical-writing power duo in the middle of the 20th century. Some of their other works include Oklahoma, The King and I, The Sound of Music, Carousel, South Pacific, and State Fair.

For a whole year of making my grandpa watch this he would say "How is the queen black, the king white and the prince asian?" And 4 year old me would give him the side eye and say " grandpa I don't think it really matters". I think he would say it all the time to mess with me😭

I think they did that on purpose. They wanted to have different colors in the movie, not just all white. I think the actors they chose for each character are on point. The Queen is hilarious, the evil family is on point (while also being hilarious) Whitney Houston, of course, is an angel. She's gorgeous and her voice is perfect. I also liked her message to Cinderella....that its not just enough to WISH for your dreams. You have to help make them come true yourself. And Brandi made for a beautiful Cinderella. Her voice was pretty. Her gown was on point. And she didn't just spin and daydream and be happy to stay in her family's attic being abused and humiliated like Lily James did. Had it not been for the damn mice, Lily James would STILL be spinning and humming. lol Even the Prince was better than the Disney version (both versions). Yes, he yawned too, but he was still funny and his chemistry with Cinderella was sweet. And Lionel is also great. I like him.

I don't know if any adaptations ever actually use this explanation. But I've always been under the assumption the fairy godmothers magic made it so the step family wouldn't recagnize Cinderella, but it also ends up working on the Prince.
As well as the glass slippers having magic so only Cinderella can wear them.

I feel like the shoe was a magical shoe made only for Cinderella, so it would only fit on Cinderella’s foot no matter who they tried it on.. just my theory lol
And the son is not adopted 😂 In the reunion, the cast and creators definitely addressed the funny situation of having a black mom, a white dad and a non-adopted Asian son or trying the slipper on everybody in the kingdom despite their color… They said that they just decided to do a “diverse casting” and to not look at color and I think that that’s super refreshing… they were progressive af for the time ..This is such a timeless classic in my book.

The songs are from Roger & Hammerstein- the 2 people who wrote this version if Cinderella. Their version is meant to be a play/musical so whenever you hear these songs, just know it’s from them. 👍🏼

This is the most diverse, splendiferous cast I've ever seen in a film. I was lucky enough to find a DVD of this Cinderella the last time I went to Walmart, a week ago. I only have the VHS left after all this time, so I snatched it right up. I'll be looping it forever because this will always be my favorite version of Cinderella.

The reason it was midnight was because in folklore midnight is the witching hour. Basically the one time a day where all magic is null and void.

Had to intervene for the part where she’s talking about the cinders, and you asked what that had to do with her name. In every version of Cinderella, she is called Cinderella because her real name is just Ella. But when she started working by the fire so often (And in some versions slept by it as to not be cold when she was kicked out of her room.), the ash and cinders would end up on her face. Her step mother and step sisters gave her the name “Cinderella” from that moment on. To tease and torment her.
    Edit:
Also, this is actually a musical. It was a musical before a movie. And for the concept of trying the slipper on every maiden’s foot, a lot of versions use the fact that it was magic. Saying that the shoe was magic and made for her, so it would fit her foot alone. How the Prince would know that, who knows, but it drives the plot forward.😂🤣
