So February 11th is Brandy’s birthday and the anniversary of Whitney’s death. That plus it being Black history month and Valentine’s Day weekend makes the release of this version of Cinderella on Disney+ on February 12th all the more iconic

I love that this version managed to make the music their own without changing the core of it, because Rodgers and Hammerstein wrote some of the most beautiful music to ever hit a stage.

R&H wrote all of the music in this version but not all of the songs are from the original musical. As a producer Whitney and the director felt additional songs were needed as their production was 11mins longer than original. The R&H estate doesn't allow non-R&H music to be used in R&H musicals so they pulled songs from the full R&H catalog. "The Sweetest Sound", "Falling in Love With Love", and "There's Music in You" are the added songs not in the original 1958 production (Julie Andrews) or the 1965 remake (Lesley Ann Warren).

As someone who is in their 30s, something about watching you get so excited about a movie I absolutely LOOOOOVVVVEEEEEDDDD while growing up literally brought me to tears 😭
Although this was indeed first presented on the Disney TV series, it really exists outside the "Disney Canon." (That's why it doesn't use any of the names invented for the Disney animated version, like Jacques or Anastasia.)
It's the third TV production of a musical by Rodgers & Hammerstein (you know, the "Sound of Music" people) that was created for television, as a vehicle for Julie Andrews in the 1950s. There was a second TV version in the 1960s with Lesley Ann Warren, before this one with Brandy. It has also been done onstage, including a Broadway run a few years ago.

Brandy and Whitney singing Impossible together is just iconic and still gives me chills❤️
The fun thing about this movie is it’s like the ultimate version of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella. Even the modern productions apparently added way more complicated B plots. But since the Julie Andrews version was at this time considered lost media, this production added bits and story beats from that movie plus bits from the Leslie Ann Warren version. Not to mention added songs from other Rogers and Hammerstein shows to make it a more of a modern musical and I think it made it more cohesive. Not only does this production have an excellent color blind cast, but the Prince is Giving a Ball number was a bit more sexist in the older versions. It’s just a perfect movie.

I have some amazing facts about this movie 🎬
• originally Houston was set to play Cinderella. However due to conflicts with her schedule it was delayed for 3 years, by which time she decided she was too old to play Cinderella, so she reached out and offered it to Brandy who was her friend and mentee. Brandy agreed but only on the condition that Houston would appear as well, so she accepted to role of the Godmother. I think that's a sweet story about 2 women of colour lifting each other up.
• When Goldberg was cast as the Queen she refused to wear costume jewellery. So she convinced a wealthy backer to donate real jewels for the movie. Thus in the film Goldberg is casually wearing $60 MILLION worth of jewellery!!! The necklace she wears alone is worth $7 MILLION.
• The production ran out of money to pay extras near the end of the shoot so Goldberg took a paycut and let them be paid out of her paycheck.
In the original fairytale, her name was Ella, and yes, the step sisters came up with the nickname of Cinderella

Rogers and Hammerstein have created some iconic Stage Musicals, this is just their most famous one. Before this version came out, the one I WAS most familiar with was a 1965 version which also had a few notable actors. One of the step-sisters was played by Pat Carroll, who you would recognize as the iconic Ursula from The Little Mermaid.
Yeah the step-sisters names do vary in different adaptations. In this adaptation, the step-sisters are named are Roman and Greek- Minerva was originally the Roman version of the Greek Goddess Athena and Calliope was one of the Greek Muses.
This movie came out when I was in High School and I adored it and it is my fav Cinderella adaptation also.

1: mulan, moana, cinderella, snow white, merida and aurora were the only ones with different necklines mostly for historic or geographic reasons all other princesses had the princess neckline also known as the off the shoulder neckline similar to the sweet heart but with sleeves.
2: tiana had two main dresses one that was blue and has a sweet heart neckline with a drop waist and her wedding dress that looked like a seafoam green lily pad wrapped around a lotus flower and its neck line is also similar to the sweetheart princess neck line
3: therefore the only similarity is that there both beautiful black girls but hey that's not a bad thing

Yes her name is Ella she was called Cinderella to be bullied that's what the stepsisters call her. Because she always sit by the fire or the fireplace or something like that. Yes this is the original version and Disney took this version and turned it into dare version of Cinderella which as you know the blonde hair blue eyes one so I guess Disney wanted to partner with this to do Rogers --- version along with Whitney to produce this masterpiece so it depends on which one everyone grew up on. Disney version has mice and all that good stuff and talking animals. Does another version which is one of the original versions where it was more bloody.

Whitney Houston was supposed to be Cinderella but by the time they made it she was too old so she went for the fairy godmother roll and got Brandy for Cinderella. It was always supposed to be a black actress in the Cinderella roll.

Thank you for this amazing reaction! I grew up watching this and in my junior year we performed this version of the stage musical! I was King Maximilian and our cast was diverse as well. Cinderella, Stepmother, Lionel, Queen and I were white and Prince Christopher, Fairy Godmother, Joy and Grace (Stepsisters) were colored. Brandy and Paolo are set to reprise their roles Queen Cinderella and King Charming in the upcoming sequel Disney’s Descendants: The Rise of Red! 👠✨🕰💙💜💛🤍

You're right about how live action Disney would be better if they incorporated more theatrics and dramatic. I feel that way with a lot of live action adaptations, not just Disney.

A much lesser-known but beautifully done (in my opinion) version of Cinderella is The Slipper and The Rose. I bet you would love it. This will always be my favorite, though ❤️

Fun Fact: the song "falling in love with love" sung by the stepmother is a Rodgers & Hammerstein's lesser known song added to this 97' rendition that fit perfectly for the Stepmother to sing to her daughters while getting ready and boarding the carriage for the ball, it's a song warning her daughters to fall in love for money & not fall in love just for the sake of love AND HELLO sorry huge musical nerd when you have Broadway legend multiple Tony award winner like Bernadette Peters signed on to play the stepmother she better get her own song! This is a female driven cast each a diverse Queen in their own rights !!! I sat down and watched it with my 8 year old son a few days ago and I pray I thought Millennials would stop racism be the first so called colored blind generation, it starts with us and what we teach our children! My son never questioned anything just like I had not when I was 11 watching for the first time on ABC Disney. Whoopi Goldberg said it best in an interview, and I am paraphrasing but it was along the lines of ( if your children or anyone for that matter asks how an African American mother + a White father can have a Filipino child JUST TELL THEM ...LOVE+ LOVE=LOVE) the best thing I've ever heard ❤
