Nope there wasn’t no controversies, it was actually accepted and is a fan favorite. The public really fell in love with Prince Christopher aka Paolo Montalban. It’s such a shame that Hollywood never really gave him the proper exposure or opportunities compared to other actors.

    Some fun facts:
The Prince actor had a crush on Brandy that's why you could feel the beautiful chemistry.
Brandy's look later inspired Tiana's look in the Princess and the Frog!
    Oh and a little edit:
Ye, Disney did not care for this movie so that meant not much effort was put into set design but still they put their soul in this

Are you sure about that last bit? the 1965 version of the musical had a very similar vibe to the set, designed to look like stage sets. This version does the same. I'm pretty sure it's intentional and these are heavily designed sets, practical sets all built for the film with a lot of detail and that staged theatre style. The sets, costumes and props are vibrant and distinct. I wouldn't call that low effort. Maybe low budget sure, but not low effort.

This movie actually wasn’t controversial when it came out. This film launched ABC’s Wonderful World of Disney initiative with high viewership and they sold A LOT of VHS tapes.

    • @0deadx21

The film wasn't controversial because there was literally nothing to be controversial about. It wasn't a remake and it wasn't based on the fairy tale itself. The Little Mermaid (2023) had no such circumstances.

@@0deadx21 First of all, it WAS a remake. The original was in the 50’s with Julie Andrews. It was then remade in the 60’s before the Brandy/Whitney version.
Secondly, what do you mean by “not based on the actual fairytale?” The Cinderella fairytale is about a girl who is mistreated by her stepmom and stepsisters until her fairy godmother gives her a beautiful dress, a pumpkin carriage, a glass slipper and a chance to go to the prince’s ball. The prince falls in love with her, marries her and she is saved from her unfair treatment.
This is exactly what this movie is.

I actually love the costumes in this movie.
It actually wasn’t a low budget. It was the most expensive made-for-TV movie at the time I believe costing over $11 mil. You might not recognize the actor playing the prince (Paulo) because he mostly does stage acting.
Also, because it’s made-for-TV it was short because of all the commercial breaks.

This was just another version of Cinderella, nobody ever questioned the races of the characters because the makers never pointed it out or made a big thing of it, the cast the people they wanted, the people woth great characters and great voices. It wasn't a remake, a redo, the prince isn't adopted, he is the biological son of that King and Queen, and nobody had a problem with it because they didn't tell us we should. Refreshing, isn't it?

This is one of the fakest-looking movies even made. The locations look like obvious sets and not at all like real, believable places, and almost all the costumes are so random and incoherent that they're forgettable. It's like I'm watching actors on a set, and that's not helped by their dialogue and personalities. The 2015 film is the one that looks like a fairy tale came to life, because everything onscreen looked beautiful, real and believable.

You were dead wrong about the Karens, back in the 90's Brandy was pretty much universally beloved. There was some skepticism of course, but that was on Disney's part NOT the audience. You have to remember at the time Brandy was everywhere, her music sold like crazy, and her tv series Moesha dominated. (It actually got a spin-off called the Parker's) by the time this debuted, Cinderella was the highest-rated original for ABC, and Brandy herself was pretty much the gold standard for Cinderella. (Even Lily James can't hold a candle and we all know how popular her version is!) In fact, it goes without saying Tiana absolutely owes her existence to Brandy!
As for the Little Mermaid, presentation is everything, Whilst promoting Cinderella Brandy presented herself as sweet, humble, gracious, and appreciative for the opportunity. Audiences reacted positively to this vibe and were happy to give her a chance.
In contrast, when promoting LM, Halle came off as an arrogant diva, full of herself, (if not outright entitled to the world's money), something that turned enough of her potential audience away. Especially overseas, where humility and social grace are considered important virtues. (The dark, murky terrible cgi did her movie no favors either, but this isn't about that) My point is that though It may not seem like it should be a factor, at the end of the day, personality does matter.

Also, there’s 4 versions of Rodger and Hammerstein’s Cinderella. The first one was back in 1957 tv musical special where THE JULIE ANDREWS played Cinderella. Then they recasted and had another version in 1965 with Lesly Ann Warren as Cinderella. Then the Whitney and Brandy version in 1997, which resulted to a 2013 Broadway version.
So yes same plot as Cinderella, but different take as well different music. I like that in this version the Prince and Cinderella met earlier on and made a connection already before the ball. Also, it’s good to get to know Prince Christopher and see his personality and dynamics with his parents as well as his opinions/perspective on things. 👍

In the R&H version of Cinderella, the stepmother and stepsisters are not overly mean. They even gave Bernadette Peters more lines to make her meaner and “cut” Cinderella down more. That whole declaration of her being common and her dad being weak was not in the 1957 and 1965 version. Ever After will always be my ultimate, but I quite enjoy this version very much.

Bernadette Peters, of course, is a Broadway legend. If you're going to cast somebody of that calibre, you're obviously going to beef up the part a little, and they did, even interpolating a song for her ("Falling in Love with Love," written by Rodgers with his first lyric-writing partner, Lorenz Hart).

Apparently, an executive at Disney wanted anyone else but Brandy to play Cinderella. They did not believe Cinderella should be played by a black girl. That executive wanted them to hire the singer Jewel instead. Whitney Houston and the other people in charge of making the movie refused and wanted Brandy and only Brandy. That executive was not happy. Eventually, they ran out of money and were almost done filming the movie. They were asking for more money to pay for the extras at the wedding scene, but the same executive gave them the run around and eventually refused when they asked. So Whoopi Goldberg gave them money for the rest of the extras. They still refused so the producers paid them with their own money instead. They were not able to get Whitney to film her last parts in person so that's why they had to green screen her into the movie at the end. Whitney always wanted a soundtrack to be made of the movie, but she never got the chance to see it happen. The soundtrack issue had to do with Whitney and Brandy's record labels, though not disney. I hope they will release the soundtrack someday.

The "failed love" that the stepmother sings about: I always took it as her own daughters' father walked out on her when her found out she was pregnant. How that tracks with the clearly white Calyopy and the obviously African American Minerva, I still don't know. Chalk it up to the same logic that says that and old white man and Woopie Goldberg produced an Asian son.

    • @mergingbutterfly
      @mergingbutterfly Год назад +3

This film is so color blind that it's assumed that both daughters is the stepmother's biological children because other than that is no real way to explain why the stepmother has that much hate over Cinderella unless she was jealous of her for her beauty and talent or maybe she saw something in her that just made her disliker there's no real reason other than her not being her true daughter if the stepmother was capable of adopting or fostering other children like the black sister then it would have been no reason for her to hate Cinderella that much. And all the original stories that's Cinderella house that's Cinderella father's house the mother only has it because naturally she married the father for the died mysteriously go figure almost immediately after marrying the stepmom and they moving in and they treat Cinderella is a servant slave in her own house that's how meek and just how much low self-esteem Cinderella had to the point where she didn't even speak up about hey this is my father's house well this is my house you know it's kind of like Snow White that was Snow White's castle that the evil stepmother have her like a serving as well.

Therefore, if the Prince is fixated on a woman who has disappeared and cannot be found... yes, she is going to urge him to give her up so he will settle down with someone else here and now, rather than chasing around indefinitely after a dream which may or may not be realizable.

There are many movies/shows that won awards and are amazing that terrible people still would fight against because of something as simple and crucial as diversity. Literally look at all the shows now including diversity that groups of racists are doing their best to dismantle with comments & reviews. Just because the same tech tools didn’t exist in the 90’s doesn’t mean racism didn’t exist. You were just probably less aware of it in your circles which leads to you making this uneducated comment today.
