Licensed therapist Jonathan Decker and filmmaker Alan Seawright watched a lot of Cinderella movies, so they're ranking Cinderella romances. The contenders are Cinderella (1950), Cinderella (2015), Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella, A Cinderella Story, Ever After, and Crazy Rich Asians. They talk about why the love at first sight trope is the worst, and they praise the movies that show couples growing together. Alan gets annoyed that Cinderella movies often rely on the prince being dumb, and Jonathan is so over interrupted kisses.

@@amaek8062 lol, I believe they have been asked for that before and they have strongly said no. They are trying to keep things as close to family friendly as possible...for the most part. The closest to 50 shades they have gotten is their hilarious Twilight series.
Dominic Noble does some 50 shades critical analysis on his channel, though, if you are interested.
I know this is far too late to have any possibility of being seen, but I thought I'd try anyway. For another Cinderella story I recommend Not Cinderella's Type. The production quality may be below what most people want these days, but judging by the thirty million views the film has on RUclips, I'd say just a few people like it, and I can see why. Not only does it realistically deal with the real emotional abuse Indy suffers, but it also has the most mature and sensibly handled love triangle I've ever seen. The "prince's" father is also a family therapist, so it'd be interesting to see Jonathan's thoughts on that point, too.

My personal thought process:
She got to know the prince...but she didn't know it was him until later (reminds me of the lyrics of a song from Beauty and the Beast) . . . But enough of my thoughts. I am Very much looking forward to the thoughts of you too.

In 1959 Cinderella's defence, the Prince seems to be the first human person she's talked to that hasn't treated her like crap. That probably gave her an immeadiate attraction to him.
Other comments have also said this, but the Prince could have face blindness (something I learnt this week Joanna Lumley has- at cocktail parties she can go get you a drink, come back and can't recognise who to give that drink to)
1950 actually
It was made in 1950. After the Great Depression, after World War II, when people were recovering from some really heavy stuff. Audiences wanted something light & uplifting, and that’s what they got in Cinderella.
Yep. The fact that she comes from an abusive environment, the whole being kind thing, that's going to have a huge impact.

I really loved the 2015 Cinderella specifically for the characterization of Cinderella herself. It is so rare, especially in modern films, to see a female heroine be soft and gentle. I love "have courage and be kind" in this story because, if you've ever dealt with abuse, it takes incredible courage to stand up for yourself and it takes active work to be kind. Throughout the story, Cinderella chooses over and over again to treat the people around her with kindness. And she learns to stand up for herself. I've heard some people criticize the juxtaposition at the end where Cinderella calls out her syepmother for being abusive and says "you are not and have never been my mother" and then forgives her. But i think those are both the culmination of Cinderella's growth: she has the courage to stand up for herself, and the kindness to forgive.
I don't agree that the 1950's Cinderella was personality-free. She had spunk and spirit. You could see it when she was talking to the cat and the mice. When the stepmother told her to clean something, she spoke up and said that she had already done it. The fact that she didn't abuse the stepmother showed virtue and grace under fire. Growing up being treated badly, she definitely earned it.
This!! I feel like people often miss that about 1950 Cinderella and it's honestly disappointing. I mean come on her sass is hilarious once you catch onto it!

What I like about Cinderella's story (any of them) isn't the romance. It's the story about the young woman who managed to hold on to her optamism, creativity and sense of self, despite growing up with abusive people constantly trying to tear her down. And her friends helping her out of her bad situation, because it's okay to need help when you're in a bad place.
Yes yes I think people always resume princess movies only into the end when the princess get married and totally forgets all the other things that happens and the princess personality

Agreed, I will take no Cinderella slander of her being a boring princess/girl or whatever. Cinderella movies and Rapunzel from Tangled singlehandedly helped me as a child in my own abusive family. Tangled is still my favorite movie, and Cinderella is up there as well (I LOVE the "This is Love" scene, not because it's romantic, but because it's a culmination of Cinderella finally having one night of fulfilling a dream and getting to experience something special and magical, which when all you know is abuse is such a special memory).
@@hnichole Exactly my take on it, too! When you come from an abusive family background, having no warmth and love, even the smallest kindness can feel like LOVE. She didn't even go to the ball with the intention of catching the Princes' eye. She wanted to go because the invitation was extended to everyone in the kingdom, and it was her chance at seeing a world outside of the cruelty that she knew. And after the ball, she wasn't even trying to claw her way back to find the man she danced with-- she had already accepted that it was one night of joy. When he came to find her, of course she was going to allow him to pick her up out of the abusive home. Who wouldn't?
@@theloverlyladylo9158 the difference is that the relationship isnt the climax of the movie. in most princess movies, including the first cinderella, the end of the movie and the biggest part is her getting married. and it doesn't honestly spell out the rest of that Isabella is saying, because honestly, especially for the 50s, I think its a reach. she's seeing what she wants to see. its the freaking 50s, women were restricted in so many ways, and abuse was legal. in same movie, the end goal was always very clear that she wanted to leave, while 50s seems content with her abuse to just sit down and take it forever. sams end goal is to get to dance college, and thats the climax of the movie, when she gets accepted. the guy is a plus, and the relationship grows when she sees he's a good person and he helps her achieve her goals. 50s guy doesn't do that. also, while wanting to run from abuse makes sense, we should caution that it often makes people run right into another abusive situation, or at least, precarious one.
For me Cinderella will always be a story of a woman surviving abuse with hope and kindness. I never saw it as romance, more as friendship and help.
I love this view. I first came across it while watching a video essay by The Take a few years back. As a kid, I believed that the prince saved Cinderella, but in the last few years, I’ve learned that she saved herself by enduring for so long.

Yeeeessssss. I'm abused and ever since I was a kid, I always found Cinderella so relatable. I hate when people write it off as an unrealistic and dumb romance. Also, it kind of makes sense that Cinderella, who has been abused since childhood, mistakes the slightest sign of affection as love.

I thought it should've ranked higher. I've never seen Crazy Rich Asians, so I know nothing about that one, but I honestly didn't care much for the Cinderella remake. It obviously didn't leave much of an impression on me, all I remembered was that she sang Lavender Blue and I think there was a little bit more about Lady Tremaine and her motivations, but I'm not even positive about that one...
Same! Ever After is my all-time favorite Cinderella movie. It is so bittersweet and wonderful 🥲🥹
There are several classic rom-coms from the 90's that I grew up watching over and over with my family. Ever After is one of them. We quote it a lot because there are some damn funny lines, and honestly, I love every actor's performance. My only complaint is that a few of the British accents were a bit unconvincing, but even that is minor and only noticeable if you're British, or you're slightly obsessed with all things British (that's me).
I kind of wish Ella Enchanted was in this lineup. It's easily the best Cinderella story as far as real relationships go.

I'm surprised that Ella Enchanted wasn't included in this. I feel like that could've been a good contender for the top three for this specific ranking, and the relationship between Ella & the prince was fleshed out _so_ well. A whole enemies/rivals to lovers arc that wasn't super toxic

OMG, you're so right! Ella Enchanted was one of my favorite movies when I was younger especially because it mocked lots of the fairy tale stereotypes
@@larissafracalossi9847my one complain of that movie (even though i admit is. The GOAT) is that the stepsisters are left with no consequences for being acomplices of attempted regicide, even if they didn't know.
I wish even more than the movie that the Ella Enchanted book could have been included, that was a healthy relationship from the get go. He appreciated her sense of humor, wit and ability to learn languages, she appreciated his kindness and genuine behavior, and they had several interactions which moved their relationship along, including a six month period writing interesting letters to each other while he's in Ayortha. Her ruse to get him to hate her is sad because she knows he'd find a way to fight it if she revealed the curse but she sees no other option. Anyway it's a really great book, I like the movie fine on its own but it's not the greatest adaptation.

Yes!!! I love the book because their relationship has such a natural timeline with their meeting, friendship, and finally finding love over letters. They are also just able to have fun together, be serious together, and they are each thoughtful and smart! Honestly, this version ruined all other Cinderella stories for me because of how beautiful it is!
I'm surprised you didn't point out that both were willing to make tremendous sacrifices for each other in Crazy Rich Asians.
He was willing to be ostracized from the family. She was willing to lose him so that he could find love and not lose his relationship with his mother.

Considering how family bonds are so heavily emphasized in Asian culture (imo more often than not unhealthily so), that is a big sacrifice
I also admired how she not only was willing to let him go so he wouldn't lose his family, but that she stood her ground and felt no shame about her upbringing and family, which was something his mom hated about her.
I was so worried you wouldnt like the Cinderella remake with Lily James and I was so relieved you both loved it!! Some people disliked it but it brought me such comfort in a rough time in my life. I left the theater floating on clouds in a haze of soundtrack and daydreamsss!! Im glad to know I wasnt wrong about the relationship, it just felt so genuine!❤

I thought it has been THE BEST REMAKE ever filmed to the day, it didnt squashed the original but fixed the hiccups from the old version in a way that was gracefull and filled with love not to mention it expanded the backstory breathing life back into the old classic while keeping the core of the story intact.

Not too much on 1950s Cinderella. I love that her strength was in her character. That no matter how abused she was, she was kind and she was patient and she was rewarded with the chance to go to the castle of her dreams. Didn't even realise she never wanted to meet a man as a kid, she just wanted to have a night of fun but got one anyway😂
She is quite sassy too. It shows in how she pranks her animal friends and talks to lucifer for example. People often overlook those for characterizations. Those are prime examples of show don't tell yet people so often overlook it.

@@one-onessadhalf3393 I haven’t actually seen the Disney version more than a few times. I grew up watching the 1965 Rogers and Hammerstein version with Lesley Ann Warren. In that version, it is the prince’s idea to try the shoe on everyone, and he is there as it’s being tried on. I love that version so much, my grandma had a recording from when it was on tv, and I’d watch it with her every time I went to her house :)

To be honest, yes the 1950s Cinderella doesn't build a super strong relationship, but you have to remember, that early disney films weremeant to be escapism from hard times. Snow white came out during the 1937 recession, Cinderella came out in 1950 at the beginning of the cold war, and in between these years we were in WWII. Disney was using simple stories to moreso showcase their artwork, and to help people escape from the harsh complexities of their world for 90 minutes. I see those old animated films get a lot of flack these days for not showing healthy relationships, and what not, and I understand, that marrying a guy you met yesterday isn't a good model for a relationship, but we have to not just assume people in the past were stupid. They went into these films knowing that the stories were make believe, and that it was a fairytale, not something you base your life on. They viewed them as something beautiful to go see with your family, friends, or date to escape the harshness of their reality. And it's a little heartbreaking to see people trash these movies. You guys aren't but so many people do online and now offline, and it's sad because, those movies were from a different time, and while they may not reflect modern sensibilities, we also need to remember that without these movies, there wouldn't be the disney princesses that came after. without Snow White there is literally no Disney World, no Disney Animation Studios, and none of our beloved childhood films. While we may not like the past sometimes, we also owe everything we have to the lessons our ancestors learned, and lived so we wouldn't have to do the same, and for that, the past does deserve a certain level of reverence and respect.
Snow White, Sleeping Beauty and Cinderella are all set in time periods when marriages were an arranged thing between parents and the kids had to obey, especially with royalty. In those times, the relationship came AFTER the wedding, sometimes the wedding was the first time the two even met. So it's not surprising that there is no real relationship in these movies either. Even in Ever After, the prince is about to marry the Spanish princess as a political marriage without having even met her before and he runs out from his own wedding to go be with Danielle instead. Even in my own ancestors, in the 1600's I've found a wedding contracts between a father and a 50-years old husband-to-be for the 14 years old bride-to-be (3rd wife, after he was widowed 2 times and needed a wife to take care of his 15 children) and such. How can there be a relationship between a 50 and a 14 years old? We can't look at stories set in those years with our modern eye.
Wholeheartedly agree with this. It’s partially why i’m not very fond of new cinema too. While i don’t exactly need escapism from a psychological pov, i also don’t need hyperrealism. Let fantasies be fantasies, who cares how surreal they are. Everyone my age i know grew up with those movies, yet all of us recognized them as the fairytales they were and knew that this is not how it’s supposed to be in reality. Even if my parents also had a pretty Cinderella-ish start into their relationship 😆

The thing about the original Cinderella is, while it isn't love, I absolutely buy that it's euphoria and that she might not know the difference. That would be such an incredible experience, and the relief alone to not be enduring her usual life would be euphoric.
Ever After is my favorite Cinderella movie, and it will always be. Drew Barrymore gives the character a voice and makes the relationship her choice because she recognizes that they do make each other better people because they are together. That's growth! Plus Anjelica Huston as Rodmilla the "evil stepmother" has so much depth!

For me, my tolerance of an actor’s bad accent depends on how much I enjoy the performance itself. Drew Barrymore’s Danielle saved her surrogate grandfather and reunited him with the rest of her true family, she saved the prince from the Romani tribe by literally carrying him on her back, she decked her evil step sister (chef’s kiss, right there) she saved herself from her abuser, and she delivered the most fitting retribution to those who had emotionally abused her for a decade. That’s why, in terms of the character, she is easily the best Cinderella.

It would be fun to watch a “psychology of a villain” with the stepmothers, especially Anjelica Huston and Cate Blanchett. I watched a clip years ago where Anjelica Huston was talking about the scene where Drew Barrymore asks her if she ever loved her even a little bit, and she replies, “how could I love a pebble in my shoe.” Anjelica Huston said that they ended the scene, and she sobbed like a baby, it was so hard to deliver those lines.

I love the interpretations of Cinderella where of course the Prince couldn't recognise her - he's face blind.
I'd also argue that Cinderella 1950 isn't just "1 dance = love", we see them walking and talking for hours. That's still a limited time, but it's possible to get a lot of insight into how a person operates depending on what you're talking about, especially if you skip the surface details like their name 😆

I think that would be **very** interesting; Henry's whole runaway groom aspect (him running away from/ not caring about his duty, Danielle & Da Vinci help him with that, knowingly *&* unwittingly); how he goes from growing attraction & _potentially_ considering the idea of marrying Marguerite, but after the fiasco at the masque (& her connection to it) he's willing to accept a loveless union of state, despite how he previously felt about it: now _there's_ principle for you
- Danielle's sense of obligation to remain at her family home, with her loyal retainers- despite what she has to endure
- the dynamics of blended families
- parents favouring children over others
- positive & negative ambition - oh, God- a person could write an essay on it all...

I think a comparison between Ever After and Three Hazelnuts for Cinderella from some of these points of view would also be very interesting. The two versions share many similarities (while at the same time they are quite different).
Brandi's Cinderella diverse casting was such a positive model for me as a kid. I grew up in a transracial family (brother & I are Asian, mom & dad are White). This was the first time, and sadly one of the very, very few times, I've seen a family that looked like my own.
Also doesn't hurt that Paolo Montalbal is gorgeous.
I agree and can relate with you. This film had to break down barriers to center a transracial family and interracial couple. I'm Black and Japanese and this movie is important to me because of its positive representation of POC and how Cinderella and Prince Christopher miraculously look similar to my family. I appreciate how some Disney movie remakes have evolved to reflect more complexity in their characters and am hopeful to see racial/ethnic identity explored in these kind of films too. Paolo and Brandy's performances were so sincere, who they were as genuine and kind people really shined through. They were the perfect pick for the roles in my opinion.

high key, I think that "love at first sight" works better BECAUSE of the diverse casting.
in many other transracial romances its about learning they are "just like us" aka human... but for Brandi's Cinderella the prince didn't need to be "convinced" to give her a chance, he sees her and loves her, because we are allowed simple love

Literally when i was a kid I never even questioned the diversity of the cast and as an adult I love that they were cast for talent not just looks.
I always feel that people missunderstand the original Disney Cinderella, her characterization is subtle but present. She laughs, have friends, gets angry, gets sad, she is so human and it makes me so dissapointed every time someone just chast her as a victime and dumb. She has always been my favorite princess because her core is that kindness makes you strong. She had every reason to be bitter, mad and resentfull; however, she choses to enjoy life as much as she can and give love to thouse around her and the end the love of her friends is what ultimatly saves her.

She was so incredibly HUMAN in an incredibly emotionally (and arguably physically) abusive family. She gets mad at the clock because she wants more sleep, she tries to apologize and even lightly refutes when stepmother gets mad, she takes care to make sure all the animals get food, cries deeply at the loss of her late mother's dress and by not perpetuating the cycle of abuse she find support
THANK YOU - it's clear they didn't really watch the movie and so they lost a little credibility (or, they are just cherry picking). She definitely has a few times she snarks (privately). Such as, 'the music lesson', haha.
As I am from the Czech Republic, I can´t help but add a comment here and recommend our classic - Three Nuts for Cinderella (or Three Wishes for Cinderella) from 1973. This version of Cinderella is definitely one of those with lots of courage and a backbone. The relationship with prince is teasing and fun, it might not have that much room for development as in Ever After, because it is more focused on Cinderella, but it is the best Christmas classic loved not just in my country.
For me as an Austria this is THE Cinderella movie, the one I have watched the most and also love the most. I think it is a really fun version of Cinderella, especially compared to the original Disney movie, she has a much more fun personality.

To me, the two major components that makes a Cinderella story a Cinderella story as opposed to a generic romance plot is (1) the spell (however that manifests), and (2) the glass slipper. These two factors _should_ absolve the prince from "being stupid" if done right. The implication of the spell is that she wouldn't be recognized. The easy way would be "the magic obscures Cinderella" and somehow makes her unrecognizable, but in more grounded modern magic-less retellings it could be "someone who normally dresses down suddenly dresses up and is unrecognizable due to the stark difference" or in Hillary Duff's case, "a mask". It is important that some external factor inhibits the prince's ability to recognize Cinderella.
As for the glass slipper, it is supposed to be a demonstration of the prince's intelligence. Given that he would not be able to recognize her due to "the spell", he makes all women in the realm eligible to the slipper test (demonstrating that he's willing to accept Cinderella from any caste, even before he actually begins his search). And MOST important, the slipper being glass means that unlike traditional footwear made of cloth/leather/rubber, glass does not bend or stretch, so even women of the same foot size won't have the same contours, same arch height/length, same toe length, etc. The glass slipper is functionally a frozen finger print for all intents and purposes, which the prince recognizes either implicitly or explicitly.

Roger and Hammerstein Cinderella is my favorite because of how diverse a cast it was. Growing up Princess weren’t black, princes aren’t Asian, so it was such a cool thing to see and be like as a kid “oh I can love someone that doesn’t match me.”
This film was one of the rare few that showed me interracial relationships and showed it’s okay. It’s okay if your family is not like the ones in a small area of growing up.

Absolutely!!! The representation meant so much to me and it was treated like not a big deal at all. Really inspiring. Also, Paulo was so in love with Brandy and talks about in interviews to this day, so cute and they seem to have such a good friendship. ❤
As a Filipino myself, seeing Paolo as the prince and Brandy (whose from my hometown) as the princess was definitely the first time I’d ever seen anything closely resembling my life on screen. I understand the relationship in the context of this video isn’t healthy haha, but ugh, this movie is my favorite version and will always be.
As a white girl growing up, I loved seeing the diverse cast. I always thought Brandi was a beautiful princess, Paolo, THE Prince Charming, and I adored The Queen. She was my favorite character. Not to mention, Whitney made THE best Fairy Godmother. This was always my favorite version of Cinderella . It showed a mother (though terrible stepmother) who loved both of her biological children, though they were different equally. She wasn't mean to Cinderella because of her skin but because of her relationship with her father. Even as a child, I knew how special this movie was. I wish it got more recognition. You missed out on the best adaption ever: “Tři oříšky pro Popelku” (Three little nuts for Cinderella), from 1973.
She is a freedom loving fierce rider and huntsman, an animal lover and playful, but poor girl and he only gets to be with her once he recognises all these facets of her.
Her ‘godmother’ is an owl, the costumes are typical 70s Eastern European fairytale wild, and in most German-speaking households, it’s not Christmas without that movie.
You absolutely need to watch it!
Normally I would agree that love at first sight doesn't exist. But the moment my Dad saw my Mom, he said, "I'm going to marry that girl." They got engaged 9 days after first talking to each other, and 30+ years later, they're still lovebirds. Obviously it took a lot of work and effort into their relationship, but their story is truly wild.
I will say, the Disney animated Cinderella is vastly improved by the direct to DVD sequel, Cinderella 3. You'd be surprised how good that one is! He actually remembers her face haha.
Ooh, yeah, A Twist in Time is freaking amazing, IMO. I think it definitely improved on Cinderella, the Prince and Anastasia for the better, in terms of characterization. Especially the Prince.

I think most of the jokes land beautifully too. It's probably better than some of Disney's theatrical releases and that's saying something.

I grew up with soooo many Cinderella stories but Ever After has remained my favorite by far for the most obvious reason…they actually interact longer than one night AND share chemistry, ambitions, and flaws. 12/10 can’t go wrong.

I got “have courage” and “be kind” tattooed on two of my fingers for that movie. It’s one of my all time favorites because it tells the story so well and depicts such a beautiful character with depth and intelligence surviving through the trauma of her childhood and holding onto that kindness and compassion through it all. ♥️
Ever after is iconic and their relationship is definitely based on mutual respect, adoration of the others’ strength and perseverance and the others’ heart.

I found this prince to be more realistic because he has more depth & dimension. He is more curious about her than singing about a fantasy version of what love is. I love that he questions everything in life. I love as the story progresses, he is discovering who she is. I also like that Prince Kit in the live-action version asks pointedly, "Who are you?" And she responds by telling him everything that she is not with confidence & self-assurance because she is not looking for his validation or approval. This is who I am, take me as I am! I am enough as I am!
I am a huge Ever After fan. It’s one of those movies I watched again and again as a teenager. Danielle was a fighter in just the best way, and while Lily James is brilliant and did an amazing job, for me the genuine pain and conflict Danielle brings seems more convincing. Not just to trying to keep her secret when the Prince is confessing feelings for her, but even at the end that she cries that he is wants HER, as she is… Lily’s Cinderella shows that her kindness and patience is a strength, but her serene vulnerability when she faces the prince is not nearly as convincing as tears from someone who has been mistreated and abused for years by those closest to her.
After all these years, ever after still gives me warm fuzzies, which lily's cinderella never really achieved. I think the emotional journey of ever after is just more cathartic and powerful
I don't understand why people love Lily's cinderella.... The original was sassy and literally fought her way out of the attic by giving directions like a general to her mice and other animal friends. Lily just kinda.... danced all no thoughts head empty until someone accidentally spotted her in the window....

Lily James was a version of Cinderella that was very sincere and very sweet, although I personally would have preferred the step family to have moved in when she was a child, just like in the original 1950 film, I feel like it would’ve added a far better picture of how someone who was beaten down finally breaks free. That’s why no matter which version of is that the madness of the step family starts in the very beginning.

I recently watched a lot of defences of old Disney Princesses so let me jump to the animated movies aide: a) there is an implication in the ball sequence that the Prince and Cinderella talked for a while before midnight (I mean... they're sitting together when the clock strikes) and Cinderella's "He was so... so..." implies that they just had chemistry. Also they most likely had some time to get to know each other before the wedding bc there is a timeskip before that scene. b) It is never stated that the prince doesn't remember her face. He simply isn't the one looking for her. It is actually the Duke who has to rely on her shoe size to find her, because he is the one going to all the girls' home with the slipper. And he only saw Cinderella briefly, so it makes sense that he has to rely on the shoe. We don't get to see how the prince reacts to seeing her again, but chances are that he WOULD recognize her immediately.
Exactly!! There's a lot of subtlety in the old movies because they can't fit everything in an hour. The audience doesn't need to have everything spelled out for them. That's the fun of watching movies over and over and catching something new in the background.
And yes, a time skip doesn't mean it happened the very next day. Most people knew it could have been longer. But when you're dealing with magic slippers and pumpkins turned into carriages, a bit of fantasy is more than allowed.
Also even if it was in a short amount of time, it makes sense why Cinderella would so quickly fall in love considering her background. Unlike the other Cinderella movies where you can see she leaves the house and/or has other staff as makeshift family, this Cinderella is implied to practically never leave the house and her only friends are animals. While the getting married part might not be realistic, if the first man you have had any prolonged interaction with since your father happens to be an attractive man you can dance and talk with all night, you’d probably fall in love in the spot too
And, if you watch Cinderella 3 : A Twist in Time (which is a fantastic movie) the Prince is expecting to see Cinderella, but when he sees Anastatia, he's like "oh, this is embarrassing. you're not the person I danced with." just before the evil stepmother zaps his memories with the fairy godmother's wand.
Seriously, if you haven't seen it.... watch it!
Also, I have a hard time sometimes recognizing people in street clothes outside of church and not in their best. Can't imagine trying to find someone in their street clothes who you've only seen dolled up to the 9's

I love the live action Drew Barrymore version because she’s not afraid to speak her mind and she actually takes action to get out of situations rather than just stand up to others. Also, in the live action Disney adaptation Ella and Kit actually meet before the ball and get to know each other, that way they’re better connected at the ball. Finally in the version with Brandy, I love the diverse casting. It’s a shame it took 23 years to have another live action princess of color (I know there’s Jasmine, Pocahontas, Mulan and Tiana, but it’s still nice to have representation in a live action adaptation as well). Plus to have a Filipino Prince Charming is awesome, although you have to wonder if he’s adopted when his parents are Whoopi Goldberg and Victor Garber but it’s a movie and there’s no need to get that deep into details

I think every adaptation is good, retelling the classic fairy tale in its own unique way, but it’s nice to have changes especially since a lot of princesses in media are becoming more independent and free spirited, taking time to develop romances as well as have full personalities rather than be submissive 24/7. There are some exceptions such as the 50’s Disney version because Cinderella was a servant since she was a child so she never really got to experience the outside world. I was a bit puzzled that Ella in the 2015 version didn’t leave after enduring her stepfamily’s abuse because her father died when she was an adult but I also understand and admire her dedication to her parents and her home and she does defend herself eventually. Also in this version they make Lady Tremaine an understandable villain because we know why she hates Ella and it’s not just because she has a better chance at life than her own daughters. It gives her more humanity but it still doesn’t excuse her behavior and in the end she, her daughters and the Grand Duke are banished for treason
Danielle is badass for that period in time. She saves the prince's life from the Gypsies, carrying him on her back, and then saves her own life from Pierre Le Pieu who had shackled her, pointing swords at him, threatening to slit him open from navel to nose. And then only asks the King to punish her step-mother and sister to the life that had been imposed on her by them. "I will speak for her." Is always a great moment in the movie. Henry has more flaws, but he treats her like an equal, which is a plus for that time period.
I love in Ever After that she doesn’t wait for someone to rescue her, she rescues herself

Also she and Henry don’t really get off on the right foot with her thinking he’s stealing her father’s horse and hurling apples at him and she pretends to be a noblewoman when spending time with him but he still admires her spirit and her compassion for others. She also saves of one of her beloved servants who was a surrogate grandfather to her, from slavery by paying his debts. And yes she chooses the punishment for her stepmother and stepsister but I am glad she has a good relationship with the one stepsister who is bullied like her.
Ever After will always be and continue to be one of my favorite romance movies, princess movies, and Cinderella retellings. Drew Barrymore is so amazing and funny in that movie
I'm gonna need you to do a WHOLE episode on Ever After. I feel like aside from the romance there's so much more to that movie that could be discussed regarding losing her parents, her stepmother treating her horribly, a "golden child" with the oldest step-sistet, and then after all of that the romance of course.
Also the live action Cinderella is the only Disney live action, like you guys said, that improved upon the original story. The rest of them....YIKES.
Had to laugh when they spoke of the 1950 Disney Cinderella. When I was growing up, my dad tried to give me and my sister some guidance about what to look for in a man. Dad passed away some years ago, but one of our fondest memories is of our dad putting on a really exaggerated falsetto and exclaiming, "But DAAAADY! He's SUCH a good dancer!!" Then he'd sternly regard us and say, "Don't bring one of THOSE home." Yeah. Handsome a great dancer are not the top qualifications for a loving life partner. On the other hand, I do really wish my partner of 45 years were a better dancer! lol (He is handsome, but then that's the icing on my cake; not the cake!)

My favourite Cinderella movie is a Czechoslovak-East German production from 1973. It's called "Three Wishes for Cinderella" (Tři oříšky pro Popelku). 3 hazelnuts are granting 3 wishes to her. With the first, she becomes a hunter and beats the prince in a crossbow competition in the woods. He is impressed by the "young huntsman'. The second hazelnut gives her a ballgown to attend the famous ball.He is amazed by her beauty, but also her wits and charm. She's quite sassy. He then looks for her and the last hazelnut contains a wedding dress. What I absolutely love about this version, is that he falls for her character and not only her beauty as he meets her as a boy/huntsmen. She's confident and strong. The magic in the story feels like old forest witchcraft ( also she has a pet owl - how cool is that?)
Ever After is still one of my favorite movies. It's actually a realistic telling and the fact Da Vinci was her 'Godmother" was the best!

Cinderella has such a special place in my heart, I grew up in a very abusive home and it was the first story (I had the Disney book) that really showed me that one day I could leave the situation I was in. Given to me by a school councillor. I will always have such a soft spot in my heart for it ♥️ love you Mrs. Sharpe!!!

I think Ever After is miles above the live-action Cinderella and is my absolute favorite of the Cinderella stories. Also, in Ever After I don't really think it was Danielle being a commoner that he had a problem with he felt like she had used him for his title and power, which is why he said, "and you are just like them."

I was gonna mention Ella Enchanted!! Gail Carson Levine is my favorite author of all time and Ella is such a fantastic character. I watched the movie before I read the book and loved it, but after reading the book....it is NOT an Ella Enchanted movie, I was so disappointed 😭

I love the Cinderella story in general. It’s about how having hope, love and kindness when you’re in bad situations can be rewarded. But I think one of the only (if not the only) version of Cinderella that has a good relationship is the 2015 version. They bond over losing parents, they really seem to have a good, respectful, and caring relationship. I really love them. And yeah they still meet and seem to fall in love pretty quickly but we get to watch their relationship grow and they seem to really have a beautiful, good relationship
I think placing 2015 Cindy over Ever After was a mistake for two reasons:
1- People forget that for as sweet as the 2015 couple is, and in spite of the fact that they do meet and develop a little more before the ball scene, they only meet ONCE before, fall head over heels just like every other Disney Princess, and are only going to the ball to see each other. Their relationship isn't actually that much improved from the1959 version where the meetcute happens at the ball. At least 59 Cindy went to the ball not to meet the Prince but just to get out. Henry and Danielle spend an entire week together, full days and nights with each other, and develop so much more layers to their love story.
2- The fact that Henry and Danielle raise each other up in the long run, and they both get to have improvement and character arcs, and it isn't just "The Beautiful Catalyst & The Prince Who Wants a Real Girl" like most Cindys. The only thing Kit helps 2015 Cindy realize is that her have courage/be kind philosophy was right all along?
In addition, Henry gets the gold for Prince with Actual Personality. Not many Prince Charmings get to be interesting too, and I wont lie, I didn't find Kit interesting. Charming, yes. Layered, perhaps. Acted very well. But he didn't pique my interest.
There's a really great video essay by Shadiversity about the scene where they meet in the 2015 version and the hidden depth of what seems like a short interaction and why the love at first sight, head-over-heels cliche worked in that moment. I had already loved that version but this video really gave me a whole new appreciation for their relationship.

@@dejajade6726 I think another reason I think Ever After should've topped 2015 is because Henry and Danielle weren't a 'made for each other from Day 1" type of couple. They had differences of opinion and worldview, they had differing personalities, neither of them were shining examples of perfect virtue like the prince and Cindy in 2015. At first, she even wanted to see him marry her stepsister so they could leave her with her rightful property, so it wasn't an instant attraction or desire. Its easier to relate to something you have to work for
@@gingergoddess8953 I do love Danielle and Henry (Ever After is one of my favorite adaptations) but I also feel like people tend to right off the 2015 relationship as just slightly better than the animated version when there's actually great writing, character dialogue and relationship groundwork in the few scenes they share together. In Ever After they visibly spend more time together and have all these big discussions and debates, which is great, but it doesn't mean the 2015 relationship is underdeveloped. It's just more subtle.
The Rogers and Hammerstein one does have them meet and like each other before the ball. Also good to remember for all of these: Cinderella is a victim of emotional and physical abuse for basically her whole life. He is nice to her and that goes a long way. The Rodgers’ and Hammerstein’s Cinderella story actually received a big rewrite for its Broadway debut in 2013, incorporating many elements from other adaptations like Ever After. I would absolutely recommend seeing that version, if you ever have the opportunity!

I grew up with the version by the brothers Grimm in which the ball goes on for three days; Cinderella manages to sneak away at least twice; regarding this she actually gets a makeover twice as well by the tree planted on top of her mothers grave; also ends way bloodier because the stepsisters actually cut of parts of their feet to fit into the shoe! As you can imagine six year old me was kind of disappointed by the og Disney version
i think that's actually very intersting, that so many people who grew up with the Grim's version are disappointed with Disney's adaptation. As a french I grew up with Perrault's version - which is the one Disney choose to adapt - and I am so grateful we have no toes violence in the movie ahah. Also I wish they would have kept Cinderella forgiving her (not-so-badish) stepsisters at the end of the story...but well...I guess the movie is in a in-between.
It's hard to forget the Grimm versions when they're so gruesome and very different from Disney!

It is still one of my favorite movies since I watched it as a kid, I had a hard relationship with my mom and loved my dad so much (I still miss him so much) and I really felt Danielle's hope and fear and sacrifice. Maybe it wasn't the most 'healthy relationship' but definitely top Cinderella IMO
I loved the Rodgers & Hammerstein’s remake with Brandy and Paolo Montalban because one of the diversity of the cast, Paolo is gorgeous, and you saw them actually conversing as people before the ball even happened so there was at least a baseline to their relationship versus just Disney magic. Plus the costumes were to die for.

I like Cinderella as a stand-alone character who shows how to stay strong under emotionally abusive circumstances.
Cinderella herself is incredibly resilient, more than people credit her for. All the criticisms of her character are victim blaming in some form

However, even in the 50's Disney film, Cinderellas motivation for going was nothing to do with bagging a man (that was her sisters motivation for attending). She wanted to go because it was an experience that she'd never had before, and living a sheltered cut off life, going to the ball provided her with an opportunity to experience enjoyment and to have some fun x

I met my husband when I was 14 years old. It was NOT love at first sight, but I felt very comfortable and safe around him. When I was around 17 years old I just knew I loved him and I could see a future with him. Our love grew slowly over years, but 15 years after we got together I’m still crazy in love with him. Teenage love can turn out great. I truly feel like he is my soulmate.
There is a czech Cinderella movie called "Three Little Nuts for Cinderella" which I absolutely love. Cinderella and the prince interact before the ball and have a sweet relationship and the music is great!
To be fair, they still only have some very brief interactions, not enough to actually get to know each other, but it is still my favorite as well. I just of to think of that movie and I can hear the melody play in my head :)

I actually would put Ever After higher than Cinderella remake, but I understand their reasoning. And I would put it higher simply because in Cinderella's remake,...the protagonists are just simply too perfect. They don't learn, they don't grow together, they're just sweet and perfect for each other so... yeah, I personally prefer Ever After, but I think they're both "healthy" relationships as fairytales go...

I never thought about Crazy Rich Asians as a Cinderella story, but it makes sense now. Slightly intrigued by the fact that Ella Enchanted wasn’t included, as that’s an interesting movie.
I adore Brandy’s Cinderella adaptation but Ever After is one of my favorite movies of all time. The characters have depth and the story shows struggle, growth, and humanity. Danielle has boundaries and doesn’t compromise her principles. It’s complex and beautiful with healthy doses of snark, eloquence, and a healthy sprinkling of Anjelica Houston at her best. Masterpiece. 👏👏
What I love about ever after is when she first meets the prince not only is she unimpressed with his attitude, she tells him. And over the course of the movie he works on the things she says to become a better person
Danielle also learns she can trust some people and not everyone is there to take advantage and she can relax and soften herself around “safe”, healthy people.
Moreover she tells him with apples to the face, the absolute best way of telling people.

You guys should really react to Cinderella 3: A Twist in Time. It gives Cinderella and the Prince an actual personality and it became one of my favorite Disney sequels! It also gave us so so much more character development from other characters of the film, and is overall just a great movie.
Please have a look on "Three Wishes for Cinderella" from 1973. In germany it is a really big thing (the movie runs over 100 times on television at christmas time) and I think the relationship between the two is really interesting :)

I know the whole thing of “love at first dance” thing is not realistic, but the idea of someone treating you like a human being after years of abuse from people who are supposed to protect you because they’re “family” is a fairy tale fantasy we all desire.

@@stareyedwitch Add in Lady Tremaine's slow but effective manipulation and grooming of Cinderella since childhood to have her as the obedient maid servant of the house, similar to Baroness Rodmilla and Danielle in Ever After, even if Rodmilla adds in some gaslighting here and there until Danielle no longer has any worth for her near the end of the film.
I would disagree that the 1950 Cinderella is _completely_ formless as a character: she loves the animals around her, even the mice (though she can't separate her feelings about her stepmother from the cat), and she loves to sew and see the things she has made go to good use. So that's two things. She's also _extremely_ good at her job, essentially running an entire minor noble household by herself: she feeds all the animals, cleans every surface, does everyone's laundry, helps the others get dressed up, and serves them their meals (I don't remember if we see her cooking, but she might). Yes, part of that is because she's being overworked to the bone, but she still does the jobs of at least a half-dozen servants quite capably.
That and the reason the prince didn't recognize her was because of fairy godmother's spell.
I remember watching the movie as a little girl and being very impressed by Cinderella's vast set of skills. I know it is largely because she is forced to by her stepmother, but the girl is a taskmaster!

I will always find 'Ever After' more 'realistic' {not that stories with fairy godmothers & pumpkin carriages were _meant_ to be realistic, but I'm sure you know what I mean} than the classic 'Cinderella', or an adaptation like 'The Slipper & the Rose'** - for the fact that there remained some other servants, so she wasn't doing *everything* on her own- from what- 7/ 8 years old? The two older women looked like they handled the inside chores, for the most part- & Danielle mostly helped Maurice with the outdoor work.
Like- how did the step-family exist in other adaptations? How did they have the home cleaned & the other chores done, when she was little & obviously lacked the strength & stamina some of these chores would have required? How did they _eat_ before Cinderella learnt how to prepare food? It's unlikely they were living the simple life - it's a *gaping* plot-hole...
Also, I _do_ wonder about the presence/ lack thereof, of the Fairy Godmother- why did she take *_so long_* to appear? And why couldn't she have done *more* (I know we probably wouldn't have a fairytale, then- but adaptations never seem to address it, either**) - _anyway, getting back_ - I couldn't help wonder later on, if she'd bibidi-bobity-booed up some serious skin protector for her, because the historical methods for washing dishes, other cleaning *, & laundering of clothes largely centered on lye.
'Dishpan-hands' was the name given for the puffy, red-raw condition that scullery maids^ would end up with- from days, weeks, months, & *years* of dipping their hands into & out of sinks of the solution & hot water- even with a diluted lye, it'd eventually tell - from what I've read, it was like serious dermatitis- oh, & the lye that was used: people made that, from scratch- with wood-ashes & water, so- another _fun_ job to fill her days with...
Same with the continual kneeling for the cleaning of the fireplace, or scrubbing floors*; 'housemaid's knee' was the nickname given to the arthritic condition that resulted.
To say nothing of the potential for just general scarring from accidents~ in the course of her work, did she never cut herself when peeling or chopping vegetables? Burn herself when lighting the fires? Trip up or down the stairs? Twisted her ankle? {No one's telling me that devil-cat never scratched her even _once_ ? Our cats have scratched me entirely by accident; I have a scar on my thumb to prove it} - the threat of eyestrain from working late, her skin burning in the sun while she hung the clothes out, or was doing other outdoor work - suffering chillblains in the winter - the blisters she would have suffered wearing *_leather shoes_* (for that matter, Snow White in her clogs would have suffered similarly, come to think of it)- as well as living in a chilly attic, & working in all weathers - maybe even additional things like the thickening of her wrists, doing things like working a butter churn, or spinning thread to repair her clothes^^ (I don't know if Cinderella's doing things like milking a cow or spinning/ weaving - I can only remember the horse from the 1950 movie, & she wanted to make over an old dress of her mother's- & her plans for it were fairly involved- so sewing was *definitely* something she did).
^Keep in mind that scullery maids were the most junior of the female servants- they were starting out as young as like 8 or 9 - & they had _at least_ *seven* years of that ahead of them, before they even had a chance of getting promoted to a better job within the kitchens...
** In that adaptation, the servants were dismissed when her father died; I think the actress was meant to make the character pass for like 16-19, so- not a small child, at least- when she was put into servitude, & I have vague recollections of mentioning some legalities, too - another thing no adaptation ever goes into {again, I know _the _*_actual_*_ fairytale_ didn't need to get bogged down in stuff like inheritance, guardianship, property law & what-have-you, but no modern adaptation seems to think about that, either- at least in it & 'Ever After', we *know* the answer to the old question: Why didn't Cinderella just leave?}

^^There's a recent video from Bernadette Banner- with a newly acquired spinning wheel, & in the comments someone mentioned an older/ alternate version of Rumpelstiltskin, where it was three women who helped the girl instead- one has an enormous foot from treadling, one a sagging lower lip from wetting the thread , & the last a huge flat thumb from flattening the thread- all they asked in return for their aid, was to attend her wedding; The king notices their deformities & asks them why they look like that, they tell him it's from spinning flax all their lives. The king's horrified & tells his new wife never to spin flax again; she's happy to comply....

You missed out on the cutest Cinderella story : "Drei Nüsse für Aschenbrödel" it's a 70th Czech film, but available in German... I guess there must be a version with English subtitles at least! Cinderella meats the prince in different Disguises,and wears a veil at the ball because she is afraid that her stepmother would recognize her otherwise. Before the prince can merry her he has to solve the riddle of who she is (he has to love all sides of her). It's not really deep, but it's nice and cute , and in Germany we kind of see it every year in Christmas time.
I hadn't seen Ever After before and actually recently took it off my "To Watch" lost cuz all the trailers and descriptions I could find made it look like an epic cringe fest. Sooooo love it! Anjelica Huston is such a good fit for the cruel stepmom and Drew's version of our heroine is not a damsel in distress. She can stand up for herself which is why I soooo love this version!

You should totally look into Cinderella 3, it takes the classic Cinderella and completely changes the story, gives her a character, gives the prince a character. It’s insane that we finally get to be shown everything we were told
It is so sad, that the Czech movie "Three Nuts for Cinderella" is not really known well in the US. In Austria it is a Christmas staple. It is a really good adaptation of the fairytale and has also a really good development of both the characters of the prince and cinderella and also their love connection. In my opinion one of the best Cinderella movies.

Thank you for mentioning this one! I was looking through the comments for this. I think the English title is actually "Three Whishes for Cinderella". The movie is from 1973 and the main actress (Libuše Šafránková) sadly died 2021 with only 68 years old. As far as I recall it was a day of mourning across the whole country as she was a huge star and apparently beloved person. It's a Christmas classic here as well and the soundtrack is so so beautiful. I always catch me humming it absentmindedly. I really hope Cinema Therapy gets a chance to watch and react to it, I honestly had hoped to see it in this episode.
My roommate told me about that so it's not our tradition to watch it every Christmas!

In defense of the 1950s Cinderella, there are subtleties to her character that many, including Cinema Therapy, apparently, don't catch. She's been mentally and emotionally abused and brainwashed since CHILDHOOD, plus we never see her with anyone other than the step family and the animals or going outside until the ball. We actually see her frustrated and angry with the stepmother and stepsisters, but when you have been beaten down for so long, what else can you do but bear it in defeat, and then disassociate through your dreams to cope (Sing Sweet Nightingale sequence)? The fact that everything she went through for years didn't turn her into a miserable, bitter person is in itself quite admirable. The ball is the catalyst for her character change, and it's not because of love. She wanted to go to the ball, not to meet the prince, but to have one night of fun, her first rebellion, so to speak. Doubly so after the stepsisters basically assaulted her and ripped her dress apart. It just so happened that, at the ball, she met this handsome guy who treated her like she was special for the FIRST TIME in her life since her father's death. Is it love? Of course not, but is it difficult to believe that this young girl (who's supposed to only be 18), abused and isolated for most of her life, without a frame of reference for what a healthy relationship, let alone a romantic one, even is, would become infatuated with the 1st guy that shows her kindness and attention and confuse it with love? After the ball, she's in such a state that she completely disobeys direct orders from the women and does her own thing, which prompts the Stepmother to lock her in her tower. Yet, when the Grand Duke comes to the house with the slipper, she practically becomes a general, mobilizing her mice troops to get the slipper and get the dog to scare Lucifer. She becomes proactive in her limited means. It can be argued that, with the help from the mice, she, at least partially, saves herself.
In contrast, in the Kenneth Branagh version, the abuse doesn't start until Ella is an adult. We see her constantly out of the house and that she has friends she can rely on, so why doesn't she leave? After she's locked in the tower, she does nothing except dance and dream around her room. If it wasn't for the mice opening the window while she's singing, AS SHE'S LOOKING OUT THE WINDOW, WHERE SHE COULD'VE SEEN THE ROYAL PARTY COMING, the now king would've never known she was even there.
SO, in conclusion, there's a Nostalgia Critic video that better explains this point of view, whether you hate him or not. Rethinking the OG 1950s Cinderella has merit since there's a certain risk of victim blaming her without looking at all the facts.
All good points. My issue with the original isn’t about Cinderella but rather how one dimensional the Prince is. I don’t know if “issue” is even the correct word, I just never felt interested in her story until the 2015 version. But to be fair I wasn’t that into any of the original Princess stories, the modern princesses (Tiana and Rapunzel, I don’t know if Moana counts) are what appealed to me. But I awknowledge that the original princesses were a product of their time, it’s just not for me.
Ella CAN'T leave! That is HER house, moreover, it's HER MOTHER'S house. Leaving it would mean like she's leaving her parents' legacy to Lady Tremaine. You see how much any change that her stepmother makes in the house affect her emotionally. It's like the house took her mother's place and role. That's why she doesn't leave.

At it's core I think Cinderella is a really great story -- it's a story of someone growing up in an abusive family situation trying to be a good person and trying to hold on to hope of a better life as so many abused teens do, and it's just unfortunate that most versions dismiss and resolve that situation with a really superficial romance and isms rather than really holding her abuse respectfully and having her goal be escape rather than marriage.
I'm an author and published a short story rewrite of Cinderella where I kept all the major plot points but removed that superficiality because I wanted to let that story of trauma and hope and resilience shine through ❤

Czechoslovak/German actually! half the cast spoke czech and the other german, and it was relesed in both countried with dubing (in czech the stepmother is dubed over and so is the king and queen! you know how at the begening of the film when the stepmother is yelling at the servants to hurry up it pauses but the audio is still talking, thats cuz she was speaking in german and was dubed over in czech!) I love this film so i looked up a bunch of info on it, they almost didnt make it cuz of communist becasue one of the writers upset them and it was originaly suposed to be filmed during the summer, thats why the dresses where so light, also the ending sceen it was -20 out and the horse Cinderella was riding cougt a caugh that he had for the rest of his life 🥶
Absolutely needed Cinderella and Prince Charming from Into the Woods, complete with Anna Kendrick and Emily Blunt being utterly baffled by the other’s situation 😂

So, something that is lost in modern adaptations of Cinderella is that the prince DOES recognize her. Taken from my Children's Lit class in uni: when he places the slipper on her foot, he looks up and recognizes the girl he'd been dancing with from her eyes. Even though she is now dressed drably and covered in soot-not the elaborately made up girl in a ball gown-the prince recalls the eyes of the woman he'd been dancing with for three nights. Hollywood seems to prefer this "love at first sight" / "just knows by vibes" thing, which sounds fantastical, but just gets criticized a lot. Sure, the original fairy tale isn't much "better" in terms of two people meeting and talking about their interests, but I think something is lost without that moment where he realizes it's her by something other than foot size.
Absolutely! The other thing I hate that people miss is how it isn't a "foot fetish" issue. Her foot wasn't ACTUALLY smaller than everyone else's- its that since the shoes were the only thing made from scratch by the Fairy Godmother, they only fit cinderella. They will grow and shrink so that they don't fit anyone else but her. I wish any adaptation stressed that point somewhere.
The Roger's and hammerstein version is actually pretty unique with the Dynamic with the Prince (Christoper) and Cinderella,he does know Cinderella, he meets her early on in the square, and they start to fall for each other there, at the the ball he doesn't know her,mostly because she looks so different and i think the magic has something to do with it too, when he meets her again, he knows who she is immediately, because it's the Cinderella he met earlier.
Yes! I was going to write that too about the 1997 version but I'm happy you've typed it much more eloquently. They meet as equals beforehand and there's no immediate mutual spark. My mother remembered a past Rodgers & Hammerstein version (I believe the Lesley A. Warren one) and how it drove her nuts because the Prince didn't recognize her. She was so pleased that Chris saw Cinderella from behind & instantly made the connection between her ball and "plain clothes" selves!!
My favorite cinderella movie is "three wishes for cinderella" (1973). It is shown every christmas in my home country. In norway the old voiceover is part of the charm.

One of the best and most iconic versions of the story (at least over here in europe) is the Czech-Version "Three Wishes For Cinderella" (1973).
Cinderella is a strong, female protagonist, the whole movie is set in winter and the music is so beautiful that there are concerts in which you watch the movie, while a orchestra plays the music live.
Also here in Germany and in Czechoslovakia the movie plays every year on christmas, i highly recommend it.
