I loved the part at the end of Tangled when Rapunzel’s long, beautiful golden hair is cut off and Eugene makes that playful comment that he has always had a thing for brunettes. Her hair was the only thing that was ever considered worthwhile or special about her and Eugene tells her straight away that he loves her new hair with the underlying meaning that he loves her with or without her special gift without her having to ask him for reassurance. He already anticipated something that could bother her and immediately reassured her in a playful, lighthearted way.
It’s also something I notice throughout the whole movie Mother Gothel only gives affection to Rapunzel’s hair. She’s always touching it and calling her “my flower” where as Eugene is usually pulling the hair behind her ears and looking at her face.
O'Malley and Duchess from Aristocats are the most underrated Disney couple I think. Yet no one ever talks about their relationship. O'Malley was willing to take on three kids that weren't even his for Duchess! That says a lot!
I feel like Tangled is less “bad guy with a heart of gold/bad guy with soft spot for girl” and more of a “nice guy with a heart of gold who tries to be a bad guy as a coping mechanism” he put up walls his entire life because he’s only known loss and loneliness. That’s what makes it different and I think that’s why it feels better than most “bad guy turns good” movies and storylines Edit: I’m sick and tired of all the comments about age. She turned 18 on the day the movie takes place. He is 26. While that is a troubling age gap, and it is a little bit risky seeing as she’s only been 18 for a day, he was not taking advantage of her at all. It’s evident throughout the movie that he GENUINELY falls in love. And it’s mutual before he even tries to do anything. It’s a VERY healthy relationship, and while the age gap is upsetting for a lot of people, I hope you can see how I feel about the fact that they genuinely care about each other. Edit: He was not 26 when they met, he was 23, he was 26 when she turned 21. So my point stands anyway, but those of you who are uncomfortable with the age, I hope this changes your mind
In case of Eugene and Rapunzel I love that the series explains why she did not accept his proposal many many times. She was not ready, and he knew and understood and waited for her. I love that the movie explored that idea and worked with it in the series the complete their journey.
@@pippaschroeder9660 uhhh you could be right i don't remember right now if he accepts her proposal in the boat or the other way around. Need to watch it again
@@TANATOR02 they don’t propose on the boat. There is a voiceover at the very end where Eugene says that after years and years of asking he finally said yes
@@pippaschroeder9660 oh no i am talking about the series which comes after the movie. The voice over was a hint because Eugene and Rapunzel had so much trouble proposing to each other. Eugene did it three times and Rapunzel did it two times. Rapunzel rejected him two times because she was not ready to be "tied down" because she was restricted so much by gothel and then a little bit by her father and so Eugene waited for her to be ready (she proposed in that time but he said he knows she is not ready and just proposed because she was almost loosing him to another woman) and so on and so forth. I just watched it again and Eugene proposes on a boat with a cupcake hehe.
@@pippaschroeder9660 other way around Eugene narrating says after time and time and time he finally said yes Rapunzel then says: Eugene....? Eugene: Fiiine I was the one asking Rapunzel: and we are...? Eugene: Living happily ever after (Lines may not be written 1:1 cuz I live in Latin America so, spanish dub is the one Ik but thats the gist of the ending narration)
Its even funnier, because in Tangled the Series he asks her to marry him 3 times and she says no the first few times because she wants them to take it slow. So haha its the other way around that's why Rapunzel goes eUgEnE!!
I love Zachary Levi!!! If you liked his character, check out some other stuff he's in(Chuck is AMAZING, if you like comedy/action/drama. That came out before tangled and he is just such a fun actor)
One of the best relationships to me is David and Nani from Lilo and Stitch. David doesn’t even have to improve throughout the entire movie. He’s just as he needs to be from start to finish. He understands that Nani is under too much pressure to be in a relationship, even though he has obvious feelings for her. Instead, he is just there for her and Lilo, not just because he likes Nani, but out of the kindness of his heart.
Exactly! A lot of guys in that situation would “be there for them” except they’d be expecting something in return. David only wanted to help because he saw them in pain, he never expected to get anywhere with Nani, and I love that sm
Lilo and Stitch is a great movie in general. The characters are amazing, and the two main messages are great: a family doesn't have to be a mom, a dad and the children, it can be anything. And the message of "no matter what's your past or conditions, you can find your place somewhere". Also I love how the characters have realistic body proportions?? Nani doesn't have the classic Disney Princess look, and yet her character design is so amazing.
I'm surprised you missed Eugene reciprocating Rapunzel's "loving the real you" thing. At the end, when Eugene sees Rapunzel with dark hair because her powers are now gone, the first thing he says is something like "I love brunettes."
The thing that most people don’t know is that the prince never asked or ordered the search for Cinderella using the shoe, it was all his father. He was so desperate for his son to get married and wanted grandchildren so bad that when Cinderella ran away he got so mad and said that whoever fits the glass slipper the prince is to marry. The duke actually tells him that there’s no way she’s the only one with this shoe size and the king just says that it’s the prince’s problem. So yeah, the prince did remember Cinderella’s face and we actually see that in Cinderella 3 a twist in time :)
seriously!! it's so aggravating that so many ppl who talk about the movie miss this detail---they think they're being so clever in poking holes in the logic of a fairy tale, but the movie already addressed it, so this kind of take just becomes an incredibly obvious telling on themselves that they didn't actually watch the movie 🙄
cinderella 3 goes even deeper into their relationship and i love how it fleshes both cinderella and henry even more! the entire thing is cinderella trying to fix what lady tremaine has done and get the wand back, WITHOUT remembering the year she's spent with henry, and the two of them just fall into love with each other so well throughout the movie! i'd rank their relationship higher tbh XD
The thing about Eugene in Tangled is he didn't change for her. He shed the persona he had put on himself, to make himself more attractive, more successful, more whatever all he thought he needed to be and just was himself when he was with her. He didn't change, he just relaxed. Which didn't mean he lost everything he had become with the persona, some of it remained. Some of it was the same. He just left behind the parts that weren't true to himself.
And we got to see more of that in the series. In the first season he was very much Flynn Rider, but that was while he was in the palace around people he'd stolen from and lied to and also people who could push aside the fact that he saved their daughter and throw him in jail immediately. When it was just him and Rapunzel, he was himself. He was Eugene. Throughout the last two seasons, you see even more of that growth as he learns more from Rapunzel about being true to yourself, and here's my favorite example. In the series Promo Before Ever After, he proposes to her and she turns him down. Specifically, she runs out of the room in a panic, which is the worst kind of no you can get besides a laugh. In season two, he's about to try again but Rapunzel is still not ready. He was questioning it, then he found his ex, things happened, and Rapunzel tried to tell herself she was ready to be engaged. But he knew she still wasn't ready, and stopped her mid-proposal to say he was fine waiting. I LOVE the writers of Tangled for that. They showed even more growth in their relationship than we hoped for, and boy oh boy was it beautiful. Watch the series if you haven't, it's AMAZING.
One thing I love about Eugene and Rapunzel is that throughout the movie, Rapunzel grows in confidence and shows just how competent she is in these crazy situations, and instead of Eugene being threatened by that and like "noooo you're supposed to let me save you!! I feel emasculated by your skills and talents!" instead he's impressed and grows in respect for her. AND it brings him joy to see her being her big, true, free self when she is getting free of abuse. That to me is a huge marker of a healthy relationship.
Also I’d like to add with the Felix and calhoun one that when he calls her a dynamite gal- her trigger- and she has a ptsd flashback, he never says it again or alludes to it in any way. And when they get married, they address her concerns and add extra protection to make her feel safe. That is how you handle things like that.
That’s how it was with my boyfriend and I! I have some trauma from past relationships, and whenever something like that is triggered, he doesn’t blame himself or me. Instead focuses on making me feel comfortable and safe, then not triggering it again. I love Felix and Calhoun so much.
My girlfriend is very quiet and for the first two years of our relationship I thought that I was responsible for her being more open and louder, but I was completely wrong and selfish to think that. She was actually just becoming more and more open and inviting as time went on by my side. She just needed someone who encouraged her to be open. I wasn’t the reason for her change I was just a pillow that was comforting her experience I was just playing a support character and she was carrying the team.
something I always love about tangled is how Flynn moving her hair out of her face symbolizes how he sees her for herself and not for her hair unlike Mother Gothel.
Seeing both Rapunzel and Eugene influence one another over a period of days versus an instantaneous moment of falling in love is so beautiful to me. Same thing with Tiana and Naveen, I just adore the couples that both have their faults but use their personal strengths to help their partner grow.
@@unvoicedapollo3318 don't get me wrong, I enjoyed Frozen II. But I definitely believe that Tangled is also worthy of a movie sequel, so long as it does the original story justice. The series is great and proves the possibility is definitely there.
I love how Disney didn’t try to make Felix and Calhoun about “Fix-it”ing Calhouns PTSD. That he didn’t ask her to “move on” or “be okay” when those triggers happen. Even at their wedding, when normally any concept of a previous tragic marriage is avoided like the plague they still accommodated her needs by having EVERY soldier aiming at the church window. And Felix didn’t think that was something that needed fixing. I think it’s a beautiful story and for people with PTSD it isn’t common enough.
People think trauma means you're broken. Really it's the fear of breaking something the same way. Felix made her comfortable to accept her fears and address them so she can love again instead of run away from those emotions. He fixed her views of herself, that she was never broken to begin with.
In defense of Aladdin. He didn't necessarily become "Prince Ali" JUST to impress Jasmin. He did it because, BY LAW, she can ONLY marry a Prince. So it was a little bit of a political move, not just a romantic one. But yeah. Lying to get into a relationship is always bad.
Also, to be fair for Jasmine and Aladdin, they didn’t get married right away after the first movie either. The second movie ends with them agreeing to adventure out into the world together and the 3rd movie is when they’re finally getting married.
@@dinnahenna4163 They don't rewatch the movies before hand. They obviously watched it before but not while filming the video. Alan preps some clips of the movie and Jonathan reacts to it. So they base their knowledge on what they remember and the few clips shown.
It's worth remembering that, when a lot of the earliest cliche fairytales were written, most people had arranged/introduced marriages, and very few people married because of true love. The 'love at first sight' trope seen in early fairy tales is SUPPOSED to be unusual and unlike the norm. People back then wanted to hear stories about love that was so much grander, purer, and more perfect than the love they experienced - a love so singular, that the two people fell in love before even knowing eachother's names.
True, and very rimantic, but setting a very unhealthy and unrealistic standard of romantic love, in movies aimed at young children, so still potentially problematic, even in its time
as someone whose never been in a relationship, this is not just entertaining on a sweet disney romance level, but it's really teaching me what makes a worthwhile relationship! I really feel so much better about waiting to find someone who I really click with rather than try to fit the mold so I can start dating asap. I love this channel sm!
Having dating experience is generally a good idea. It helps you see what you like and don't like. I dated many people before I found my husband. Some people do get lucky in relationships, but experience teaches lessons to help you keep the relationship you want. Just something to keep in mind.
I want to give Cinderella a little more credit. She was the only person at the ball with no interest in Prince Charming (she didn't even know who he was!). All the other guests were there to secure a marriage, she just wanted a nice night out for what was probably the first time. She was the only guest who saw him as a person and not a title, and he showed her kindness and affection.
Yess!! Time to let Cinderella shine she deserves more yess!! She wasn’t out searching for him. She wanted out from her abusive life for once. He sorta helped her out of it.
Sorry but I believe you might have misunderstood this part, the guys only mentioned the problem with Prince Charming. They said they wouldn't call that love, and I agree with them. I know Cinderella animated movie is a classic, however it is interpreted that Cinderella and Prince Charming are in love, after they only met once and they haven't really talked to each other. Also the whole trying the shoe on every single women is kinda stupid, how can you forget how the love of your life looks like? It is a good story but we cannot say they have a healthy relationship based on the animated movie.
@@esztellakiss2982 this is a movie where birds help Cinderella shower! If you take issue with the unrealistic romance and the shoe-fitting, then you must take issue with the talking mice, pumpkin carriage and fairy godmother. It's a fairytale. All the fantastical elements are supposed to be symbolic.
But in the movie she says that she never got to dance with prince charming after the bell rung (she didn't know she was already with him) so technically she did come for prince charming lol
what i've always loved dearly about the animated cinderella is the arc of a person who has been in an abusive home for most of her life learning what it means to deserve love and affection. yes, she dances with someone handsome and he finds her attractive as well, but they also walk and talk for hours on the grounds (although we the viewers get it as a montage). as the clock strikes midnight, they've been sitting and talking to each other when she needs to make a magical quick get away - her excuse is, "the prince! i haven't met the prince yet!" and the prince has a visible reaction when he realizes she spent all this time with him, not because she's after the crown, but because she genuinely enjoyed his company. i think that's the actual important moment in the new relationship, not the locking eyes and dancing a waltz. cinderella gets a lot of hate from folks who haven't watched her movie in a long time (or ever). but i think those folks underestimate how powerful it is to find affection when you've been told all your life that you are garbage, barely fit to serve the people who were supposed to love and protect you the most, when you finally accept (accept and believe, not realize) your humanity and your dignity and your wholeness. and if you actually watch the movie, you find a much more interesting personality than "just be nice all the time, even to your abuser!" or "omg he's cute i'm in love". she has sarcasm, wit, emotional endurance, softness, and yes, incredible compassion. she has to hide her personality to her abusers to survive, but she's still there. idk, it's really easy to dismiss femininity and softness. the femmes who use traditionally masculine tactics to succeed at their goals are not the only strong femme characters; sometimes strength looks like the emotional fortitude to stay alive with your heart intact.
I love this response. I've always found Cinderella to be one of the more compelling female leads in a Disney film because yes, she does have this seemingly impossible capacity for compassion despite her circumstances, but she's not completely blind to her situation. She knows her step-sisters and step-mother are utterly garbage people, and I love that in those moments where she is alone in her reality, she'll make a sarcastic or biting comment on them. And I absolutely agree with your comment on the power of affection. As someone who's been in an abusive relationship, you really are ground down to relying on sheer faith and the belief that you'll love again, especially when it comes to regaining the love you have for yourself. There's beauty and romance in that quiet strength you need to push through another day and realize that even if it's only until midnight, you can experience a real connection with someone again and let yourself shine through.
Another thing about them is Charming and Ella were both in rough situations where they needed a solution. Their marriage was based on affection, true, but also practicality. Ella (Cinderella was a nickname from her stepsisters) needed an escape from her family; Charming needed to marry Someone because his father, the King, commanded he do so. It was just fantastic that they found someone they liked.
One of the changes which the movie made was to make the stepsisters ugly. In the original fairy tale they were beautiful like Cinderella. The Prince choose Cinderella because of her interior beauty. I always loved that about Cinderella. In spite of her horrible, unjust circumstances she was cheerful, kind, patient, and fully self possessed and would not become bitter. What an important lesson for all of us!
The difference with Flynn and Repunzel is that it isn't "Bad guy turns good for a woman" and more "Bad guy turns good for a friend". Because he changes to be good before there's any romantic intention you can't pin it to the former trope, he changes because for what is probably the only time in his life there is a good person willing to be good, truthful, and accepting to him and considering he's a good person at heart he replicates those feelings and attitudes
I disagree that he's a bad guy, but I agree with him changing after finding someone who speaks to his good nature. He isn't really a bad guy to start with. He's playacting at being a villain at best; he actually comes off more like a good guy who is also a career art thief because he romanticizes the Robin Hood lifestyle. He's very smart and cunning to have pulled off the heists that he's wanted for, but nice guy who got kicked by the system isn't a real villain. The moment "Flynn Ryder" had something better to do, Eugene popped out and stayed. I heard a podcast where they said Ursula from Little Mermaid shouldn't have been killed, she was a victim of Triton's kingdom and shunned for breaking the laws. BUT, if you go through juvie for a felony, get out and start dealing crack outside middle schools (making a real-world comparison to Ursula here), clearly you aren't making life choices that benefit others. Flynn Ryder was little better than a petty thief and changed his ways immediately. Ursula spent 50 years loan-sharking and breaking kneecaps out of spite over someone else's actions.
@@damienstadler8919 Eugene stole royal jewels and countless other things to make him so infamous. Every villain and bad guy has a reason for being, but Eugene is a good person at heart which is, like I said in my comment, why he changed once he had a relationship of any type with another good person. But that doesn't mean he didn't start out as a bad guy. Ursula was just plain bad, she manipulated and attempted to ruin the life and reputation of a very naive young woman just because of spite against her father. No matter what effects were in her life to cause that those were her choices as reactions to her pain, and even if she couldn't control her pain she can definitely control her reaction. This is also in part true for Eugene, but his reactions didn't involve manipulation and derangement, just thievery to get by and hopefully into a better position in life. Both are bad, one is much worse, and both can change even if only one actually did. But just because they can change doesn't excuse what they did. Even if they did change, they do deserve a second chance but you can't forget what they did as if they never did it.
He really just had better company! Its easier to want to be who you are/benefit those around you when you have people and support worth being better for.
The thing with Rapunzel and Eugene is, if you continue with the series, their relationship only gets better. They're both so supportive of each other, and have such a good friendship alongside their romance. I love it so much LOL
He's so supportive throughout the series. He recognizes her desire for independence since she hadn't had it for so long, he gives her space, but also let's her knows he'll be there for her when ready. He doesn't push her throughout the series at all and allows her to find her way while supporting her desire to learn to explore, and later to rule. Dude is a gem.
Rapunzel is the worst and most toxic girlfriend to Flynn! She always lets Cassandra or anyone else always insult him while just standing there without saying a word, keeps secrets from him, draws his face on a punching bag just for Cassandra and never even apologizes for it, travels back in time to fix his personality, ignores him on the day of hearts and rejects his proposals several times even though in the movie she wanted to give up everything just to save him at the end, are you kidding me? This seems so out of character for her! And this whole rejecting marriage plotline is just a sign that they don't fit together and such a relationship could never work in real life and we shouldn't teach kids that it could, then little girls will just expect to much and end up in a divorce later in life! This just couldn't work! No self respecting man would put up with being rejected twice or would wait years to be able to truly be together with a girl if he really wants to marry her. And it just couldn't work if one person wants to get married and the other doesn't because then one person would always have to give in and in the series Flynn always has to give in, Rapunzel never does. And this just isn't fair or healthy! What about his feelings and his wishes? Why do only her feelings and wishes matter? In a healthy love relationship, both opinions should matter! And if they have such different opinions and life goals, then it just couldn't work! And then it would be time to break up! And no man would put up with this in real life unless he is a simp but Flynn wasn't one in the movie and according to his backstory he was an egoistical jerk before he met her, so it would make no sense that he could change from an egoistical player into a simp in such a short time and it's not good that Disney is sending little girls such a message. It's no wonder that so many relationships nowadays don't work out and end in a divorce or a break up if we are teaching women that they should expect that men would always give in and ignore their own wishes and opinions while the women never give them anything in return and instead act like they don't really care about them, put their female best friends always above them, just stand there while they are bullied constantly and reject their proposals several times! And it's so unfair because if the roles were reversed everyone would agree that this is toxic but if a guy is treated like that it's ok. That's such a double standard. And Rapunzel having trauma is no excuse, because he also has trauma. He grew up alone and unloved in an orphanage and on the streets and he always treats her right. This is just unfair and toxic and it angers me that people call this the healthiest relationship in Disney when it's actually toxic and when there are other Disney couples who are very healthy but are always forgotten like Tarzan and Jane or Robin Hood and maid Marian. And people shouldn't criticize the other princess couples for marrying so early when that is just how things worked back then when the stories are set. If anything they should criticize them for getting together so fast because back then people got engaged quickly after falling in love and there is nothing wrong with being engaged, you could be engaged for months or a year before marrying and they should have just done that with Rapunzel and Flynn. And he didn't even propose after a few days but after a few months, and for this time period that's an equivalent for a few years in our time, so it was the right time and she should have said yes. And the way this scene is framed, it looks like she wanted to say yes but then thought about how her life would be then and if that seems so horrible to her then she shouldn't be with him anymore! Flynn deserves better, he deserves someone who accepts his proposal the first time and who doesn't subconsciously consider marriage to be a trap. Whoever considers marriage to be a prison shouldn't even have a relationship! And two people who have such different wishes and goals just don't fit together and this could never work! And why is marrying framed to be bad even when it's after they know each other for months but sacrificing yourself for the other even when you have only known each other for a few days framed to be alright? If you want such a modern relationship with such problems, then don't bring in a scene in the movie when both are literally willing to give up their lives for each other after having known each other just for such a short time! And if you want to show such a romantic and touching scene where two characters want to give up anything for each other because they love each other so much, then don't ruin it later with such nonsense where she literally rejects promising to stay together with him and only to love him! It seems so ridiculous that they say she wouldn't give up her freedom for him, when she was literally willing to do that for all eternity for him in the movie! It just makes no sense! It makes that whole scene of the movie unbelievable! And why does marrying him even mean she has to give up her freedom??? It only means that if you secretly want to break up or cheat! It's just a promise to only love each other and to not break up anymore! And if she truly loved him, she would want that and not see it as having to give up her freedom! And it's just not healthy that only he wants that and this just wouldn't work and he's always treated so badly and not allowed to have a different opinion! When he has another opinion than her just once, then she travels back in time to fix his personality and people are seriously calling this healthy??? I know that wasn't her intention but she seemed to be perfectly ok with it at the end and acted like it's right that his opinion was altered against his will even though he was right at first! Flynn deserves so much better! It's also cruel that they changed his personality so much and made him so stupid! I refuse to believe the Flynn in the movie and the one in the series are the same character! It's just so cruel what they did to him just because of modern feminism and because Frozen made more money! But in my opinion they completely destroyed Flynn and their relationship and i wish they never made this stupid series in the first place! The story was over, there was nothing more to tell and they just ruined the beautiful love story of the movie for me and above all sent horrible messages like marrying means giving up your freedom or that a man's opinion shouldn't matter and that he should always have to change his opinions and wishes for his girl while the girl never has to make any compromises and always gets anything she wants and is worshiped all the time by her man while she never gives him anything in return and ignores his feelings and needs because they apparently don't matter! It's just not fair! And I will never forgive them all of that and never stop hating this series and I can only still enjoy the movie if I count this as not canon!
I saw a post on Tumblr (because of course it was) pointing out that Calhoun has a proper traumatic flashback when Felix calls her a "dynamite gal" and his response to it was immediately avoiding the trigger, supporting her without requiring an explanation, and eventually making sure she felt safe and comfortable enough to face her trauma when she was ready to do so. I was ECSTATIC to see you'd placed them as number one in that list, because I completely concur 8D
Same here! I'm so glad they acknowledged the nuance in the Nesquiksand scene (Tamora feeling bad about hurting Felix's eye and not wanting to hit him, but accepting it since it was their only escape and he could heal himself) because it shows that she's not one of those "we made this female character strong by having her be sadistic and violent" types. She only uses force when someone is a threat to themselves or others, or if there's no other option Also these two do indeed have a very happy marriage - in post-movie content like Disney Heroes: Battle Mode (and even in their few scenes [and deleted scenes] from Ralph Breaks the Internet) they're always calling each other sweet nicknames, holding hands, being affectionate, working well as a team, and respecting each other without trying to change each other. They're a lot like Gomez and Morticia and I really wish we had more Felix and Tamora content out there!
Also yes on great portrayal of PTSD! In addition to everything you said, they also showed how PTSD can manifest in "big" and "little" ways. Like when we first see a flashback of her backstory when she's walking towards the Sugar Rush tunnel, she just kinda freezes before becoming aware again, but later in the shuttle with Felix she has a full-on panic episode. And even though Felix doesn't understand at first, he figures out pretty fast not to say "dynamite gal" around her anymore and is supportive of her, while she treats him as an equal as well and never looks down on him for being small or mild-mannered.
@@fishdude2954 thank you so much for these additions! especially your interpretation of why she hit Felix in the first place with the Nesquicksand. That is EXACTLY right. The violence was ONLY resorted to because he was endangering them both, and all other options had been exhausted. It's been YEARS since I've seen the movie, so I knew there were other examples of the handling of her PTSD, but they didn't spring to mind, so much appreciated on the assist 8D
Calhoun definitely hit the jackpot, she found a partner who will never die on her. One tap of the Hammer and he's good as new. Felix, of course, also hit his jackpot, but for...different reasons.
The only relationship that's on par for me with Flynn and Raps is absolutely Tiana and Naveen, I ADORE their relationship, bro starts a respectful (albeit obnoxiously oblivious rich boy) king and she softens around him and our bro is willing to give up EVERYTHING to support her and her dreams because doing so doesn't just make her happy, it introduces a purpose to his life he never had before
I haven't watched the movie with Tiana and Naveen but to me it doesn't sound very healthy to give up on everything for someone. Bro, like get your own passion, find your own purpose that you have full purpose on and then make people happy around as an extra (if that makes you happy and adds on your existing purpose)
@@kristamariau he didn’t have any of that haha it was part of his character journey to go “huh! Maybe being a handsome lazy prince who goes around flirting with women and spending lots of money isn’t all that life is cracked up to be!” And he like meets people other than her in New Orleans and learns that you can *shock horror* work with your hands??? So yeah, totally valid critique but I promise that’s like literally the point
In defense of prince charming, shoes in that era were custom made for the wearer, even for the lower classes. So it was perfectly reasonable for him to use the shoe as a means of identification. Also, in the original the ball was a masquerade (no way of knowing what she looks like) and lasted for three days (more chances to interact and get to know each other.
I'll always love the classic Tumblr post about how he has horrible face blindness and the shoe is literally the only way he can recognize her without the outfit.
I will say I love Snow White as an art form. It was the first full-length traditionally animated feature EVER. People in the business thought Disney was crazy trying to make a full-length animated movie. He took a huge risk to make it, changing the history of animation/cinema forever! Because it is the first full-length animated film, it earns a top place in the best-animated movies. Just don't build relationships off of it.
I never can believe how slow people were to pick up on new ideas for technology, even as recently as back in the early 20th century. The public certainly sided with Disney. Meanwhile, I suppose Snow White is supposed to take place in what, the 15th-16th century? What do they expect? 😂
The criticism people make of Snow White from the point of view of how real relationships are supposed to work annoys me and is colossally unfair. It always seems to be based in ignorance on why the film was made, how it was made, and who made it. It completely ignores the fact that: A) It's meant to entertain first and foremost (which all movies are), not be a blueprint for how to live your life. There has never been any point in time where Disney has stated that their films are meant to educate or tell people how to live. Their primary mission statement from the beginning has been to entertain. People who think otherwise are factually and historically incorrect. B) As you said, it was the first ever full length animated feature film. They were still in the early stages of the art form, which means there were still things that needed time to be improved. One of these was animating handsome men. At that point they had figured out beautiful women enough to convincingly animate Snow White, but the Prince was difficult for them so he doesn't appear in the film much as a result. The animation for the Prince in Cinderella a little over 10 years later is a huge improvement, but they didn't really have the handsome prince type of character animation perfected until Sleeping Beauty, which was released a little over 20 years after Snow White! C) It is a straight up a classic fairytale, told with the same kind of simple story telling that you would see in fairy tale books (which was smart, considering the huge risk making this film was). The filmmakers knew that, and weren't trying to pretend it was anything other than that. For scenes like the wishing well scene, where Snow meets the Prince, they did experiment in the early stages of development of having the Snow and the Prince have a conversation with each other. But ultimately, they didn't feel that it worked, and decided that going with a musical number and a more fairytale approach to the scene would make it more timeless. And quite frankly I think they were right to do that. D) Animated films are made by real, regular people, who have real relationships, real dating experiences, and real marriages. Walt Disney himself was happily married for a little over a decade at the time Snow White was released! So the idea that the people who made this film are trying to get a message across that real romance is supposed to look like the romance in Snow White is patently absurd.
@JessAnderson1988 I agree! Not to mention romance wasn't even the focus of the movie. The Prince was essentially the prize Snow White got for being kind and compassionate and virtuous even when she was subjected to cruelty and abuse by her own family. Not to mention we should consider when this movie came out. Snow White was released during the Great Depression, and it was a reminder of hope and love. Romance wasn't really even the main plot, rather it was about a girl who suffered tremendous abuse and came put stronger and kinder.
@@JessAnderson1988 Totally agree with you. And it's a film for children! This is my all time favourite Disney princess, and I can safely say that I didn't stand by a well singing for my prince to come as an adult. I enjoyed the movie for what it was- a happily ever after fairy tale.
Just to clarify. Eugene never claims to not be a thief. He admits to Rapunzel that he was being chased when they first met, and she never asks him about the satchel. That is why she asks him if the man in the story was a thief, too; even though he never outright told her he was or wasn't. He only lied about his name.
And even then, once he tells her about his past, it becomes clear that "Flynn Rider" is more of a persona that he projects than anything else. He's technically lying, but it's not a lie that he's using to try and woo her into a relationship
My suggestions: - Hercules and Megara - Pocahontas and John Smith - Parents from Turning Red - The Incredibles - Ariel and Prince Eric - Jack Skellington and Sally Can't wait to see this turn into a series 👀👀👀
I have kind of a hard time with Ariel and Eric because they know each other for such a short time and obviously have trouble communicating much. Jack and Sally are kind of interesting because while they don't actually interact a _ton_ in the movie, their interactions do imply that they've been friends for a while already. And you can tell that they know each other and feel comfortable around each other.
Pocahontas and John Smith together is painfully toxic. Not in the context of the movie. They were real life people and Pocahontas was a kid when she met John, who was already an adult. But Disney felt like they have to change it to put a romance story in the movie which shows how disrespectful they are.
I like how in Cinderella, it's shown that they talk for a long while, and when Cinderella needs to get away she says she wants to see the prince. She spent time with him 'cause she liked him and not because he's the prince. It is infatuation, but the animated sequels really flesh out the Prince Charming and their relationship. Also shoes were custom made until like, 1920s, and they were glass so only one girl out of the entire kingdom fitting into them isn't that unrealistic.
Yes, this, absolutely! Also, they're getting down on my boy Charming for not "being able to recognize" Cinderella? There was no opportunity for Prince Charming to recognize/not recognize Cinderella. It wasn't Prince Charming who went looking for her with the shoe! The King sent the Duke out with it, trying to manipulate the prince into marriage so he could have grandchildren. That was the whole point of the ball in the first place.
They need to react to the third movie of the Cinderella Trilogy. It fleshes out the prince so well! Their relationship makes a little bit more sense if you watch it.
I think another key reason Rapunzel and Eugene's relationship doesn't feel like the "bad boy with a heart of gold that changes for a woman" trope is because Rapunzel isn't trying to change him. She likes what she sees as he changes, but she didn't see broken boy and go "I fix him now" which is often the catalyst for the guy's change in things that follow that trope. And you guys touched on how banking on someone changing is not a good place to start a relationship when you were talking about Simba and Nala so I need not expound on that.
@@MonkeyJedi99 Same here. I was never invested in Simba and Nala as a couple. It's been too long since I watched it to be able to identify why. All I know is that as a kid I was in it for the prophetic monkey(mandrill) painting with fruit 🤷♀️
Yeah exactly. This is also my preferred method of Enemies to Lovers where villains leave villainy behind for a hero*; it isn't the hero intentionally trying to redeem them (regardless of what they may or may not desperately want of the villain), but the villain wanting to do better than they were because of how the hero is. Might be some bumps on the road, but that just makes a story more interesting imho. *and yes I do mean that bc I love me some fallen hero romances too. Can't be that selfish irl so gotta get the selfish brainworms out somehow lmao.
I would love to see Mulan and Shang. Like, how does a relationship built on respect operate when that initial respect is built on lies? They're both doing "fake it til you make it"!
Mulan earned his respect with her growth and determination during training. Before that he's got no respect for her, she's sloppy, uncoordinated, rejects authority, doesn't seem to take war seriously, and even disrupts other's training... to the point where she gets kicked out. She starts out that relationship by loosing all of his respect for her, mind you this is bare minimum respect for war cannon fodder, at that point she is literally got less respect than a horse would because at least a horse can be of use in the war. She re earns his respect through her determination to improve. Soo... it's not respect based on being a man. Her actions still stand as her own achievements worthy of respect even when she's discovered to be a woman.
I agree with Mel and I think this is akin to the whole Aladdin situation somewhat, but in Mulan's case, it's actually far more understandable as well (because if she told him she was a woman, she would have risked failing her mission on the spot, whereas Aladdin was more or less lying for personal gain, because he really wanted to be with Jasmine).
I'm no professional but i don't think that respect was built on lies. Mulan was being exactly who they we're inside, they lied about who they we're on the *outside* which is very different. She catfished him, but she didn't lie about who she was. Still not great, but she has very good reason behind it.
Adding to the comments above. I think that although Shang did feel betrayed by finding out Mulan lied to him, the main reason why he kicked Mulan out of the military was because in those times it was basically expected to treat women that way, and as the Commander?/General? (I can't really remember his rank) he had to set an example for his soldiers. In fact, sparing Mulan's life (in the animated movie) was very odd in itself based on the reaction of the... Secretary?/Advisor? Regardless, since Shang didn't really interact with any other women in the animated film, we can't really say for certain what he was thinking after Mulan told him the truth, but I am guessing Shang didn't really care about gender to begin with, just following the rules, training his soldiers, and winning the war with as few casualties as possible. And as such, Mulan earned his respect by training and becoming a strong and dedicated soldier.
About Jasmine: she was always stuck at the palace and wanted to see the outside world for a change. Aladdin is given her that. It's not about having a car ride. It's about giving her what she wanted. To see the outside world.
They also completely misrepresented the reason he reinvents himself as a royal (or I completely misremember that part). He doesn't do that to impress her particularly, he probably got that she was into him right away. He does that because she isn't allowed to marry anyone who isn't royal. That's also the reason he so desperately tries to keep that facade on, because even if she loves the real him, they both would get in big trouble
Then why couldn't he tell her on the rooftop after the magic carpet ride that he's the guy from the market and made himself a prince for her? He uses a real problem to hide his insecurity. Plus, they're kinda going through the relatable parts of the relationships that could be applied to real situations. I'm not sure when the last time you had to pretend to be royalty was, but I bet you can name the last time you gave in to an insecurity.
@@doomse150 Precisely. Aladdin and Jasmine were both lucky that Sultan gave a dame about how his daughter felt and loved Aladdin like a son, and in true Disney ending style changed the law to "the princess shall marry whomever she deams worthy" making it completely her choice and she chose Aladdin.
The part where he's describing Jasmine to the genie is so cute, he starts out with all the things he likes about her personality and then for her beauty he talks about her eyes 😭🥰
I truly believe rapunzel and Eugene will always be one of the best love stories out there... my favorite is princess and the frog just because i love the story and its my comfort... but i cried while watching tangled because of their love
Princess and the Frog!!! I loved how she still achieved her dream and it wasn't just brushed off as "oh she fell in love her dream is gone now". Like she did sacrifice her dreams to save him because he meant a lot to her, but he also knew how important that dream was to her and helped her out
She didn't "sacrifice her dream to save him". She kissed him as a frog with the expectation that he would immediately return to being human. Her dream was temporarily put on hold bc that same kiss turned HER into a frog. Which, in searching for an actual solution, is what resulted in her spending time with the prince and BOTH of them actually getting to know AND value each other. Which lead to their wedding (still as frogs, mind you) and them becoming human again. Making both of their dreams come true. I am fairly certain that this prince (I do not know how to spell his name and I am 99.999% sure my autocorrect would butcher it too) is THE most in-depth personality we see from a Disney prince in a movie. Second, all time, imo, to Prince Charming in Once Upon A Time (series).
It's nice too the Naveen didn't shelf his dreams either. They found a way to tie them together. Though they'll both have to compromise again when his parents retire.
Rapunzel and Eugene are by far my favorite Disney couple. It might just be because I think they’re incredibly cute, or because I’ve seen the series as well as the movie and it expands on them beautifully. It’s also very nice how they don’t get married right away like so many other princesses, but instead take some time, and (especially if you consider the series), she gets to live her own life outside of a romantic relationship without disregarding it, before setting anything is stone. In case you hadn’t noticed, I highly recommend it, they’re far too cute the whole time and it’s pretty well written for a series aimed at children.
I just like how healthily the series portrays them in a mature domestic sense as well - most Disney movies have bonding over life-or-death situations then... that's it. I loved how it shows their dynamic in normal situations and how it's not always just them "saving each other" since it's such a tired romantic cheat code. Eugene also basically turns into a male wife himbo but I'm fine with that because it's funny and works.
I'd like to see your ranking of Disney friendships. Characters like Woody and Buzz, Vanellope and Ralph, Timon and Pumbaa, Lilo and Stitch, Lumiere and Cogsworth, Marlin and Dory... there's a whole bunch that are each unique, with their own level of animosity that they overcome.
To be fair to the ORIGINAL story of Cinderella, she had absurdly small feet for being part fae/faerie, so her feet where considerably smaller than normal, and the golden (not glass) slipper was custom made to exactly fit her feet. Also I like to think he has face blindness so he can't really tell anyone's face, no matter how much he likes/knows them (same here)
@@Eloraurora Maybe, but that's not what this story is about. It is about that Cinderella ran away and only left that slipper as a clue to her identity.
@@Furienna Even if it's the king's idea to use the slipper, if his son weren't faceblind then he'd be able to at least give a rough description of her face. And the king would know about his son's inability to tell faces apart, wouldn't he?
@@pineapplefrostyfruits9225 Didn't a lot of other people see Cinderella at the ball too? Were they all face-blind? Now, what I think is the problem here is that the prince didn’t actively participate in the search for Cinderella even though he should have in the fairytale. Which was perfect for the animators behind the Disney movie because they still had difficulties with making prince characters back then for some reason. So he was excluded from some scenes, where he should have been present...
The thing I like about Fix It Felix and Calhoun is that Felix also has a thing where he realised that the words "Dynamite Gal" was a trigger for Calhoun because of her programmed trauma from her crashed wedding and never says it again when he's in front of her but only when he describes her to Ralph when they're alone. I know it's like a very low bar to set with "Don't trigger your signifant other and make them relive traumatic experiences" but I just really love the detail and teh fact that Felix really respects boundaries even if Calhoun never explicitly told him about hers.
Mr Fix-It Felix fixed her broken heart... and didn't do it by using his magic hammer. That's how you know he's a great guy. He knew her kind of pain takes time to heal from, he never rushed it or tried to fix it quickly - he just supported her and let her know he was there if she needed him.
As someone who is also face-blind like Prince Charming, I totally understand why he was using the shoe to find her. Cinderella 3: A Twist In Time shows that he could tell girls apart, but he wouldn't necessarily know how to describe her. It took me nearly 2 weeks of living with my roommate before I would have been able to pick her out of a crowd and I constantly have people wave at me who I swear I have never seen before.
But if he’s face-blind then how does he recognise her when she’s not in her Princess getup in A Twist in Time? The mice only told him “you’re under a spell, Cinderelly was the girl at the ball!” and he bolted off to find her ... I know she was technically the only woman on the boat but my point still stands!
I felt like Eugene didn't so much "come clean" as found someone who he felt he could be comfortable around. I don't think he specifically tried to fool Rapunzel so much as just had a front he presented to the world, and she was just another part of the world at first. Once he got to know her a bit though, he was willing to let the mask slip since he felt he could trust her. I'd consider that notably different from what Aladdin did with Jasmine, even aside from the timing of the reveal.
I agree. Flynn even sarcastically remarked how trusting him was “A horrible decision really” he never lies to her, and probably felt she’d turn him in once they arrived at Corona. But eventually he learns to open up when it’s obvious she’s counting on him to keep her safe and obviously help her to Corona. I really love the part when she opens up about mother and her hair, he asks “And you’re still going to go back?” genuinely concerned about her as a human after hearing how mother treated her. But I just really love the part when he tries to get around revealing poor orphan Eugene Fitzherbert, she just scoots closer and he chuckled like “Fine, I give up. I get you told me your secret.” And the way his eyes lit up revisiting his childhood memories is adorable and he’s a bit embarrassed about his past, but she actually prefers Eugene Fitzherbert over Flynn Rider. Aww!
The point about Eugene putting Rapunzel’s needs instead of his own hits closer with the context of the sequel series, where the writers try like 30 different things with him to try to figure out what his motivation in life is aside from making her happy. They eventually settle on him becoming a cop, which is wild for a *number* of reasons, and I’ve always felt like it was a missed opportunity not to have him explore other passions. I would’ve loved to see him become a writer, given his love for Flynnigan Rider!
@@meou_meou there's a short called Tangled Ever After about their wedding, but Tangled the Series was a 2D cartoon on Disney (I think it's still on Disney+ in the states, about the events of Tangled before they get married.
Eugene came clean with her within the course of one day. They had just met that morning and already he’s telling her the truth. I love that about them.
@@PacificWanderer It's interesting because they do a bit of the thing where conflict could be solved by just talking, but it's never because they don't want to or are being too stubborn to talk. They've just agreed on momentarily shelfing certain topics and are trying to get on the same page about being ready to address them.
I like to read Cinderella's reaction to the prince as her just being so happy to be treated with kindness by another human being for the first time ever since her father died. This girl has been put upon by her step family, has no outside world contact, and whose only friends are mice, birds and her dog. And granted, she was just visited by the fairy godmother, but that was a magical miracle lady whose stated goal is to make Cinderella happy. The prince is just a normal human being with no obligation to make her happy, he just does it because he wants to. 'So This is Love' is her remembering what kindness and respect felt like after years of abuse. This then gets cemented the next day when she learns that not only was that cool guy she danced with the prince, so he REALLY had no obligations to please her, but he's also doing everything in his power to find her again. I kinda wish Prince Charming actually did have a personality to match Cinderella's. At the time, Disney didn't put that much effort into their male leads, they just kinda existed to be the way out for our more interesting princesses. I like to imagine that the Prince is also emotionally neglected, so he and Cindy connect over that or something. Something could be done here.
I recommend watching the third Cinderella film. Yes, it's one of the films from Disney's infamous direct-to-video sequel era but unlike a lot of the sequels, a lot of care and effort was put into it. The movie fleshes put the prince a bit more and has him and puts his and Cinderella's relationship to the test. It's a fun film, honestly.
I was thinking exactly that--watch Cinderella III. The prince and Cinderella are FULL of character development (and secret identities, and jumping from windows, etc.). Also Anastasia gets developed and Drizella is HILARIOUS. LOVE IT.👍
@@literaturenerd8963 If I remember correctly that was in the 2nd movie, which was a collection of multiple shorter stories, including the one with the sister falling for the baker.
I have to say since finding this channel, this has been like actual therapy for me. Almost every single video has had something I NEEDED to hear. This channel makes me think critically and consider changing behaviors that have otherwise hurt myself or others, and it’s genuinely like medicine for me. There’s a lesson to hear in every video, not in a preachy, forced, or non relatable way; but it’s casual and relaxed. Having fun watching movies but considering their messages as well, and just talking/joking around without it FEELING like you’re “going to therapy”. Thank you both, you guys have helped me see more positively and clearly. I’m definitely a happier person after finding Cinema Therapy. ❤
Eugene doesn't feel like the bad boy changing for a girl trope because he isn't really a bad boy. He's trying to be, and he's even doing some bad things but he is having to fight against his true character when doing those things which is why it doesn't feel like the trope. Because he isn't changing for her, he's allowing himself to just be himself around her and letting his walls and armor down.
We need a part 2 or even a part 3 or 4, other interesting Disney romances: -Felix and Peppa -Tiana and Naveen -Ariel and Eric -Anna and Kristoff -Aurora and Phillip -Belle and Beast -Pocahontas and John -Anastasia and Dimitri Edit #1: Newly added -Tarzan and Jane -Wall E and Eve -Lady and Tramp -Bambi and Faline Edit #2 Newly added part 2: - Hercules and Meg - Mulan and Shang - Roger Rabbit and Jessica Rabbit -Milo and Kida -Bernard and Ms. Bianca -Duchess and O'miley -Esmeralda and Phoebus -Carl and Ellie -Nani and David -Giselle and Robert More: -Max and Roxanne -Goofy and Sylvia -Mickey and Minnie -Donald and Daisy
never say anything bad about felix and pepa. ariel and eric are problematic sis literally sold her voice for a dude nobodys worth that much belle and beast i'm not getting into just- no. only tiana and naveen and felix and pepa and anna and kristoff
oh god and aurora and philip are WORSE than snow white and her guy. he met her when she was a baby. and then once when she was a teenager. then kissed the corpse. i'm seeing a theme.
Pocahontas and John Smith is literally the worst of all of them because their story was based loosely on real life people. The real life Pocahontas wasn't an independent, strong, sassy, woman... she was a child, and being abused and raped by grown ass men. The fact that Disney chose to turn such a tragic REAL story into a cartoon is really shameful. I used to like it as a kid, especially the raccoon and hummingbird and grandma willow... But its like a seriously messed up movie... I can never see it the same way again. Man Disney has a LOT of really problematic content. How do they keep from getting cancelled?
Here's an idea: do the Disney couples of the more obscure Disney movies. Duchess and O'Malley, Roger and Anita, Robin Hood and Maid Marian. Maybe they don't have much conflict between them, but that's why I love those couplings, they're just super wholesome! ^,^
@Jonathan Wolfe I like that one too! They establish the relationship right away so there's no need to distract from the story. And I also like how it's Bianca who makes the first move.
Hi! I'm dealing with a lot of physical pain because of hernia in my spine and I happen to go through it alone. and only you guys can really distract me here, I love watching you roasting romances most of all. You feel like a family to me, thank you so much!
I feel Hercules and Meg would be a good one, as it shows Meg being afraid to start a new relationship after being hurt by her previous boyfriend. There’s a whole song about it.
But if we're considering real life standards like they're doing on these videos, Meg tricked Hercules almost all of the movie. She was trapped in Hades'contract true, but Hercules almost loses everything because of her. That's not healthy at all.
for anyone who’s curious Tangled has a series called Tangled Ever After that is like three seasons long. Rapunzel and Eugene actually have the sweetest relationship ever. btw there’s another mini movie that’s like 59 minutes long, it’s how Rapunzel got her hair back. totally worth watching
Ok, I need the Cinderella remake where the shoe fits a stable boy rather than Cinderella and the prince and the stable hand are just like "guess it's you I've been looking for"
@@deebee9383 maybe it starts as a joke? He can't find a woman who fits the shoe, and thinks it would be funny to try a man. Ends up fitting, they fall in love.
The second Alan said “Marvel bromances” my brain was just immediately “YES, YES, YES YES YES YES, YES!”, that is quite possibly one of the best ideas I have ever heard
@@Пинагод Yup: Steve and Tony, Steve and Bucky, Steve and Sam, Steve and Natasha, all such great relationships. Though some other of my personal favorite Marvel bromances not involving Steve would be Bucky and Sam, Nat and Clint, Tony and Bruce, Clint and Wanda, and of course Thor and Loki.
Really wish you guys would have covered Tiana and Naveen. I love their relationship because they're such good foils initially and they bring out the best in each other--Tiana helps Naveen buckle down and have discipline, Naveen helps Tiana let loose a bit. Plus at their core they just have a really good dynamic that feels really natural and they sacrifice so much for each other. Hoping for a part 2!!!
It's a terrible movie. It belongs in a swamp. That's why no one talks about them. Most people are traumatized by this movie and block it out of their memory.
Tbh, they saved the Cinderella and Prince charming love story with the sequels. They show more of an actual relationship, getting to know each other, yearning for each other, having conflict and resolving it. It fills in the gap between when he finds her again and the wedding. And it's very beautiful
The last relationship reminds me of myself with my current bf. We seem to compliment each other and try to bring out the best. His family notices he is much happier. I feel more stable. I do woodworking and other types of artwork, and he likes metalworking so our interests intertwine a lot and we have a lot of the same goals
Look, I am all for having a healthy relationship, but when it comes to Cinderella I don't blame her for falling for the first guy that came along and showed her sweet emotions. She has been a servant in her own home for probably more than a decade. Anything feels better than that. And to her credit she didn't even know he was a prince.
I kinda wished the sequel deepened their relationship more, sure it fleshed out the individual characters; Cinderella, Prince Charming, and even Anastasia, but Cinderella and the Prince were barely together the entire movie that there wasn't any relationship development between them.
I just wanna throw in Quasi Modo, Esmeralda and Phoebus for having like the most nontoxic resolution of a love triangle/unrequited love I’ve seen in a movie. Quasi wanted Esmeralda to be happy in spite of his love for her, and he no longer felt the need to idolize her and depend on her affection since he had come to gain the acceptance of those around him. He was happy to see that she was happy, and he was more than elated to still be friends with her, the one who had given him his first experience of genuine human compassion Thing is, that’s a super sweet ending. However, from a pretty superficial glance it’s hard for the audience (ESPECIALLY kids) not to feel like Quasi got “slighted” (not saying that’s in any way justified, but it IS a common reaction). So, the way Quasi handles it without any sort of pettiness or bitterness sets a great character example on a moral point Disney Media doesn’t often address, by combatting a somewhat unchallenged idea of “entitlement to sexual love” you see in a lot of media
You also see the contrast of the feelings the different men have for her. Frollo let his passion and feelings get out of control to the point of committing horrible crimes. Phoebus learned from her and changed his ways, but he still respected her and would have let her go. Quasi loved her, but as you said, he recognized that she was free to be with whomever she loved and he accepted it. He never threatened or pressured her. It shows that we have total control over how we act.
What I also love about the resolution of that love triangle is that not only does Quasimodo accept that Esmeralda loves someone else, but he ends up genuinely caring about that person as well - Phoebus and and Quasi's friendship was very sweet!
Right I think how they handled this situation is one reason why this is my favorite Disney movie. Also with the audience feeling that Quasi deserved Esmeralda for saving her life is a toxic mindset. Just because you saved someone it doesn’t mean that you are entitled to them as a romantic partner. I love that Quasi was like I accept that you don’t like me on that way and I’m just happy that you’re happy. That was a big part of his arc
Cinderella III: A Twist in Time really fleshes out the Cinderella/Charming relationship in a very fun and cute way. Original Cinderella kinda suffers from story-itis where it didn’t seem to have the time to go into their relationship, so it’s really nice to see them have the time to fall in love in a direct-to-video sequel of all things.
I remember being a really really little kid and thinking that snow and the prince already knew each other and that they had been secretly meeting for a long time. I had asked my mom if there was another movie where they were friends. I still love the move I know now they don’t meet much but it’s still a cute movie and ground breaking for animated moves 🥰 it’d be cool if there was a better romance movie for them!
I thought this too when I was a kid. I thought she ran away because she was wearing the “ugly clothes” and she didn’t want him to see her in them. But he started singing to her to show he doesn’t care what she dresses like lol. So I always thought they knew each other 😅.
I am really interested in your take with Wall-E's and Eve's relationship. Everyone hears how relationships are supported by communication, however, Wall-E represents a relationship that has both parties having limited ways of communicating with each other (or at least in the customary sense of physically talking). This movie is one of my favorites because of the factor that these two robots are able to care for each other through "show, don't tell", and I'm excited on your takes on how a relationship works with different forms of communication and love languages.
I ADORE Rapunzel and Eugene’s relationship in the movie. It’s really realistic to each of their goals and nothing feels out of place in terms of characterization. Eugene reluctantly agrees to take her to see the lights, but once he realizes how naive she is he tries to scare her away from the real world like Mother Gothel does. Her real personality shines when she turns all these criminals and thugs into singing about what they really want and when they’re ultimately faced with peril, Eugene just doesn’t ditch her to run by himself. I’d argue that while the crown was still his goal, his true nature isn’t one of crime. He just wants to feel as cool as Flynn Ryder. So after working together and ultimately saving each other, he decides to be vulnerable with who he is because as I said, it’s not in his true nature to want to do all the bad stuff he’s doing. He’s secretly longing for something and maybe thinks that thievery will fulfill that longing, but what he truly wants is someone to see him for who he truly is. Someone who appreciates him for being Eugene. Who embraces the fact that he can never be as charming as a book character, yet still likes him. It’s only then does he realize that there is mutual respect and he no longer wants to use her for personal gain. He wants to give up his selfish desire and just make him happy, because seeing the person who truly understands him happy is worth more than any crown. Things turn sideways and she sacrifices herself for him, but he proves that he sees the real HER by cutting her hair off. She’s more than a magical girl and he’s more than an orphan boy. They aren’t defined by their pasts but they can love each other no matter how they appear or act. Also the line: “You were my new dream” “You were mine too” will NEVER not make me cry. Anyways, thanks for coming to my TEDtalk.
It's a fairly minor part of the movie but I really like the relationship between delbert and amelia in treasure planet. Its a little similar to wreck it Ralph in that amelia is tough and no nonsense while delbert is a bit of a goof. But over the course of the movie she comes to see and appreciate the doctors intelligence, integrity and surprising courage when shit really hits the fan. Likewise amelia starts to show more vulnerability as the story progresses, she shows genuine concern for her crew and even when injured tries to keep things organised and reassure the people around her. Them ultimately falling for each other feels like a natural progression
In The Emperor's New Groove, I love Pacha's marriage. They're fantastic together and with their kids, and I love watching their interactions. I can absolutely see their marriage working. Only lament is that Pacha withholds information from her to try to protect her, but really it's just creating a problem for later when the emperor's troops show up to remove everyone.
Hey, he's dealing with a talking llama, guy's probably stressed lmfao. There's also a factor of wanting to not disappoint his family seeing how happy they are, because he wants them to stay happy. It's shown when he has to travel back and tell them about Kuzco's initial decision of destroying their house, he had to take time before announcing his arrival since he can't just do it.
Ranking movie bromances is honestly such a good idea! Everybody loves talking about the romantic relationships, but platonic relationships are really REALLY underrated! I would love to see more talk about bromance on this channel!
Agreed! I loved this video, but I totally agree that we need more on platonic relationships in general, I was thinking of the girls in Booksmart, I'd be interested in their take on them
I mean, best relationship in ALL of media is still Gomez and Morticia. The unbridled support and acceptance and love towards each other can never be beat. They are THE ideal couple
The Encanto marriages (Pepa&Felix, Julieta&Agustin, Alma&Pedro) would be a very interesting one to psychoanalyze and consider, they are all so healthy in their unique ways
I wouldn't call Pepa and Felix healthy, she's very dismissive of him and self focused, and her gift kind of just lets her get away from it. The other two couples are good though.
@@aslprincess3944 literally where?? Pepa has her clear flaws but regardless Felix supports her in any way he can and she's grateful for him. Just because she doesn't outright state it every time doesn't mean she's dismissive of him. It also doesn't help that the movie focused mostly on Mirabel's immediate family, and not her extended one (sans Abuela)
@@Cup0fCocoa I mean it's not a big enough part of the movie to really be worth arguing about But my rule with side relationships is that if we don't see it, as far as we know it's not there. I didn't see her ever be nice to him. So I have nothing to go on. Sure he's nice to her, but that's one sided. If you prefer to like it then fine, the movie isn't really about them.
@@aetheremployeesabrina True, but let's be honest--Dolores on her own could be weeks of cinema therapy, with that "gift". I'd be a nutcase if I had it for a month.
Belle and Beast from the original animation would be interesting. Beast has massive anger issues, almost abusive tendencies, but he recognises that he's got a problem he just doesn't know how to fix it because he's so depressed. People dont talk about how depression cna make you so angry. You feel angry because you're stuck and can't change. Then Belle comes along, rightfully runs away when she's scared and after Beast saves her, she saves him back, and they have a feisty heart to heart about boundaries. She brings out some of the best in him, and he realises his issues with his selfishness and anger will only drive people away and that he learns from Belle that being kind and gentle without asking anything in return is the key to being a good person. Hense the fact he lets her go, when he knows she may never, ever come back and he will be stuck forever as a monster. He gives up his chance of freedom by putting her needs first. He comes a heck of a long way in the film to when he first started and the audience believe that their relationship can work over 90 minutes of runtime. That's incredible!
@@Ned-nw6ge Well... it is, but only in that they are locked up together long enough to get to know each other better. Liking what they see, fall in love. Usually it's not a healthy dynamic when two (or more) people are locked up together. One has all the power, and the other 'falls in love' with the powerful one to make the choices they have to accept more palatable.
@@cchastant8251 I don't think that that's the case with Beauty and the Beast though. Belle fell in love with Beast because of his change in behavior, and it made her see past his appearance. Beast fell for Belle once he saw that she was beginning to look past his appearance. It was far from love at first sight; Beast thought Belle was beautiful but unreachable because he thought she'd never see him as anything but a monster. And in the beginning, that was all that Belle saw in him until he saved her life. Plus, if Belle pretended to love Beast just because he had control over her, she would've left him as soon as he made the choice to set her free.
Yes this, sadly we aren't getting Disney couples like them anymore or ... any at all. I loved how he realise this mistakes and flaws, worked on them then decided to let her go.
Omg I was roaring with laughter when you guys were talking about how most of the time the relationship is just hanging out, pushing eachother into bushes 😂 my boyfriend does this to me and I can’t believe that Alan and his wife have that dynamic too. Amazing 🤣
I’d love a part 2 of this Disney relationship episode with: 1. Mulan 2.The Princess and the Frog 3. Ever After(1998): my fave🥰😍 (I know it’s not animated but, In my opinion it’s the BEST adaptation of the Cinderella story). 4. Frozen 5. The Little Mermaid.
"You want to put your partners needs before your own, but not _instead_ of your own" Wow. Beautiful. I was in a marriage for 14 years where I was putting his needs first _instead_ of my own, due to his rage. I thought that was love. Boy, was I wrong! Now I have an amazing marriage where we both put each others needs first, but not at the detriment of our own needs. Both give and take, it's beautiful ❤
That's awesome, it always warms my heart to hear that someone got out of a bad relationship! Double to read that they end up in a much healthier one! Hope your marriage goes strong and you both stay very happy!
my husband and I are similar, where we both have to work on not taking over each other's stress and issues. after talking about something with my husband and i notice he's in a funk but I am feeling suddenly great, I need to go "scold" him and tell him to stop taking away ALL my stress, just some of it because now look, he can't laugh at my little goofy quirks. he says "sorry babe, that's what i do" but that's not healthy love!!! when i can't make you laugh or at least shake you're head from embarrassment for me, the fact that you chose to marry this weirdo and not smile? don't take away all the stress, share the load together. not my best example but that reminds me
I don't think the romantic type of love is special. And I am started to think that the romantic type of love isn't real. I mean about more than half of romantic couples either break up with each other or divorce each other. I think humans should just ditch concepts like dating, marriage, and pair bonding. I feel like this world would be a much better place without romance than it is with it. In my opinion, romantic love should not be on the highest pedestal. In my opinion, parents and siblings' family love is the strongest. Family knows who you are. Romance is fake for lots of people, put on a false persona and romance on most parts gets ugly real fast. For the reality of romance is no Disney love story. Parents and siblings' family love is one of the strongest types of love there is. If romantic love is actually real, it would be one of the weakest types of love there is.
I don't think the romantic type of love is special, and I think that the romantic type of love isn't real. I mean about more than half of romantic couples either break up with each other or divorce each other. I think humans should just ditch concepts like dating, marriage, and pair bonding. I feel like this world would be a much better place without romance than it is with it. Studies prove single, childless, women are the HAPPIEST demographic. Women are the happiest when single and focused on themselves. Statistically speaking, women are happiest when single and childless in today's times. Also, women can have friends and biological family that they share a life with. We as humans need the presence of other humans in our lives yes. But we can live alone. We don’t need romantic relationships to survive. We do need love and support, but it can be from friends and family. It does not need to be from a romantic partner. Studies also show that single women are far happier than their married peers, and that married women lose out in career earnings, career trajectory, health, and life expectancy compared to those single peers as well. Married women live shorter lives, and report lower levels of happiness than women who never marry. Single women live longer than married women. Also, according to many studies, women have higher rates of depression when married.
When they were talking about Simba and Nala it reminded my of one thing Lorelai said to Rory (from Gilmore Girls). “You don’t want to be in the business of changing somebody”
Something it's easy to forget now is that Snow White was one of the first animated feature films EVER. Apparently the Prince was supposed to have a bigger role, but animating two realistically-proportioned humans in the same seen was too hard to do at the time, so he and Snow White couldn't interact much by design.
Yes! Also Walt Disney himself explained he wanted the focus to be about the relationship between Snow White and the dwarves, that's why it's called "Snow White and the seven dwarves" and not, like, "Snow White and the Prince". The Prince himself isn't to be considered a character, he's more of a plot point (so much so that Alan says his name is Florian but it's not quite it, the Studios had in mind a couple of names and yes, Florian was one of them and the most likely to be chosen, but since his role was small and no one in the movie was meant to address him by his name they didn't bother to actually pick one).
I was about to point this out. I wish people would cut Florian more slack. He had some planned scenes of being captured and having to fight to escape and save her. But they literally had to learn how to draw normal humans and it turns out men are harder to draw (which is why Florian has such a baby face) meaning almost all of Florian's scenes had to be cut
No seriously. People need to back off of Florian. They did genuinely want him to be more in the movie but they couldn’t figure out how to animate him more than they already had. Obviously if it wasn’t the first animated feature film and they had a better understanding of what they would later on, Florian would have played a more active role in the film.
Didn't they trace over live action recorded segments for some human movements that eventually were reused in later movies. I am not saying doing so was easy, but doing that they needed the right things to trace/follow. I am pretty sure I saw a video or videos somewhere that compared scenes from different Disney films and sometimes showed scenes from older live action shorts or movies that were probably the source of the motion.
Prince Florian was supposed to have more screen time by himself and with Snow White. However, this was when frames were hand-drawn so they decided to cut out most of the ideas for his scenes because it was just too much to draw and incorporate into the story. So, we got a very very simplistic story of boy meets girl, boy gets girl, and they lived happily ever after.
it was also the first full length animated feature film and was released during The Great Depression. Pretty sure Disney like...took a second mortgage on his house or some shit to finish it....so...that might have influenced that as well.
Gotta say, one of the things I really like about Wreck-It-Ralph is that they did not make Fix-It-Felix some kind of arrogant or unlikeable character. He's just a dude who does his job and actually likes doing it and he understands that this doesn't make him superior to Ralph and even though he doesn't fully comprehend Ralphs issues, he is trying to be a good friend. It would have been really easy to make him into a lazy twist villain just because he has all the things Ralph wishes he could have which would have made him turning out to be morally depraved so that he could get his comeuppance in the end quite cathartic, but they resisted that temptation and I commend them for that. Because frankly, I don't think it's good to spend too much time on narratives where jealousy ends up being rewarded or affirmed. I'm not saying anyone is a bad person for feeling jealous about something, it's a valid emotion that deserves being addressed like any other, but I think it's important to understand that it's usually not a rational emotion. Like, most of the time, if you are jealous of someone, it's not their fault that they have something you don't have but would like to, and in that case it's not fair to be hostile towards that person.
I love that interpretation! I hadn't really thought about it like that, at least not so concretely, but I completely agree. They handled Felix so well, he was my favorite character in that movie. We need more media where people have different experiences and viewpoints and neither of them have to be proven wrong. They can just accept each other's differences, work through tension, and still be friends. That's really quite rare in media now that I'm thinking about it. It is easier to make someone the villain, but that isn't really how it works in real life. Not that media needs to be realistic all the time, it doesn't, or that villains are bad, I love villains and wish we had more that were just evil and loving it cause they're fun, but some more of this would be nice too.
Rapunzel and flynn are the best cause there relationship base on trust and respect by being vulnerable and honest about there own past mistakes before they had feelings for each other
“Relationships dont run on potential.” DAMN. I dated a guy for nearly 4 years because of potential. When we met he was a grad student studying biochemical engineering. He had plans to change the way we farm as a species. We traveled to the seed vault in Norway. We interviewed people at the rice institute in the Philippines. He was driven and wanted to change the world. By the end, it had been 2 years of him just smoking pot, playing video games, and coasting on his parents fortune. Once it finally clicked he wasnt the same person anymore, i had to mourn the person i fell in love with/thought he was or was going to be. What i thought our lives together would be. Turns out he did me a big favor considering right after I moved out, a total stranger messaged me to tell me he had been cheating on me with his girlfriend and had knocked her up. Sooo never have to question that decision lol.
Good riddance! 👍 but I am a bit confused Where do you think the line should be drawn? Like smoking, cheating is a BIG red flag but people are flawed, nobody is perfect. In a potential partner what shortcomings do you think one should look out for and which ones are acceptable
@@swatisaini6447 my advice on this question would be if you are having trouble determining if something is a red flag vs a normal human flaw is imagine a close friend or family member in your position and ask yourself, what advice would you give them? If the advice is you would tell that friend to end that relationship then it is probably a red flag. If that advice is they should talk to their partner about it, its probably a normal flaw. But i also want to add that sometimes flaws arent red flags, but they are a dealbreaker for an individual. In the example with my ex, the smoking pot/video games didnt bother me - i dont think smoking pot (in moderation and legally) is a bad thing and at the time i didnt know about the cheating. It was the lack of ambition, entitlement, and just overall shift in who i thought he was as a person was the dealbreaker. Someone else might not care about those things in a relationship, so while its a “red flag” for me, it might not be for someone else.
Would love to hear your take on Hercules and Megera's relationship. I love them but there are some real sticking points. I love the acceptance of Meg from Hercules' parents at the end even though she didn't walk the straight and narrow
Eugene and Rapunzel are probably one of the least problematic couples, since it's not a relationship based off stockholm syndrome or some other mental issues. 🤣 Seriously though. In the film, there wasn't really enough time to establish a perfect relationship, so I love that the series fills in those gaps, especially in between their proposal and wedding era.
Least problematic despite that horrible garbage series? Have we even watched the same series? She is the worst and most toxic girlfriend to Flynn! The thing with Aladdin is he felt better about himself. He liked jasmine yes and he did it to be with her but subconsciously he just did it because it’s always what he wants and he was living that dream and it was hard to admit that what he always wanted and finally had was not what would make it happy it’s not what he needed. Even with the thing that would really make him happy right infront of him and even if he knows letting it go will help it’s still so so hard
I want to see the relationships in Treasure Planet. Also Mulan, because a girl dressed as a guy making a (supposedly) very straight guy question his own sexuality will never not be amusing.
@@proudatheist2042I think their point was that Shang thought of Mulan as a man before she revealed herself as a woman and it’s hinted that he had feelings for her beforehand as well Just my assumption, don’t come at me for this 🤷
In Tangled the two find love as a result of each other's honesty and kindness, rather than showing honesty and kindness because of love. That is what makes them by far the best relationship
And remember they got to know each other and be very good first before they knew that they 100 had feelings for each other which I’d like to say that it’s the most realistic romantic Disney relationship I’ve ever seen in the history of Disney movies

I'd like to see Ariel's relationship in The Little Mermaid ranked. Especially because of the weird circumstances. RE Cinderella's shoes, since it's pre industrial revolution(ish) I assumed that the shoe wasn't just size, but specifically molded to the shape of her feet. So it would taper perfectly, and go around the contours of Cinderella's feet in a way it wouldn't for other people of the same size, especially if she had a wonky toe or something.
@@debymello4756 Prince Eric fell for a girl who was interesting and clearly interesting. *Mutters about how being mute shouldn't mean a person can't find love*
Your point about Cinderella's slippers makes total sense. They were made for her feet--out of an inflexible material! with magic!! But the idea that the fairytale happily-ever-after is thanks to Cinderella's wonky pinky toe makes me crack up. Thank you for the laugh!
I think in some versions Cinderella's feet are unusually tiny too, like in ella enchanted she's part fairy so she has tiny feet. also Ariel didn't want to be human for a man, Ursula tied her humanity to prince Eric but Ariel wanted to be human long before she met him, she wanted freedom.
Please address the relationships in Disney's Enchanted! There is a lot going on there - from love at first sight, to working relationships, to unrequited love and even divorce
I would really love to see y’all take a good look into Enchanted. Also I liked seeing Aladdin and Jasmine level up their relationship in the live action movie. As someone who loves Wreck-It Ralph, I don’t think I’ll ever be able to watch it again without imagining Jono & Alicia’s relationship as Felix & Calhoun’s. I really enjoy that comparison now though
I would kill for an entire episode dedicated to dissecting the therapy needs in The Hunchback of Notre Dame. There is SO much to address in that film and its one of my favorites. Also this format was great and I cant wait to see them look at more couples!
I always loved how Roger and Jessica Rabbit were with each other. His sheer and utter obliviousness to her appearance and her looking past his A -list status to appreciate his sense of humor ( "he makes me laugh") gave the impression that they understood each other in an environment where everyone projected onto them.
That's what I've been trying to say. Staying kind and fortuitous in an environment like that takes a lot. She didn't even desire revenge she just continued looking towards the future leaving her stepmother and siblings to suffer from their own karma. That takes alot.
Cinderella and Charming are retroactively a lovely couple due to Cinderella: A Twist in Time. In Twist, not only does it take time to show little moments of them caring for each other, it also makes Charming and his dad actual characters. Plus, what saves the day in that movie isn’t Cinderella and Charming’s romantic love, but Anastasia stepping out of the toxic and hateful cycle that her family had her trapped in and mends her relationship with her stepsister. She doesn’t expect to be welcomed after everything she’s helped perpetuate, but Cinderella is willing to take those steps with her and help her to grow. There’s such a charm and warmth to that movie, I love it dearly. Basically what I’m saying is please watch Cinderella 3 a Twist in Time. It would be amazing to see y’all break it down… and laugh at the “I forbid you from taking another step down these stairs!!” scene
I loved this one too! And in the end credits, Anastasia finds love with a cook. Just a couple of images, just enough to say that her growing as a person has changed her enough to be open to being loved for who she is. And she's no longer set on her husband having to be rich to be desirable, a toxic focus her mother taught to both of her daughters.
I would love to see your assessment of Howl's Moving Castle. There's so many great character dives in it, from Sophie and Howl's issues of self worth and self image, to the growth of forgiveness and found family.
YES I would love to see this, Howl and Sophie have such a beautiful and interesting relationship about growth and love vs possession and seeing past looks and insecurities. That movie is genuinely one of the most romantic movies of all time, its utterly beautiful.
Eugene and Rapunzel will always be my favorite Disney couple, but that's definitely in large part due to the show. Eugene is such a supportive partner and they communicate so well.
Agreed. Their relationship in the movie is absolutely fresh air. It depicts two flawed characters with hurt history who are inspired to be better, but not out of a need to be loved. The series goes leagues beyond making Eugene the absolute most genuine human being in any Disney property.
I'd love to see some more disney relationships with Mulan and Chang, Tiana and Naveen, Ariel and Eric, Belle and Prince Adam, and finally Aurora and Prince Philip.
THIS!
he better have loved her like that, considering the choppy cut he gave her. 20 yards of hair and he still opts for that mess
@@bassbabs6500 He was literally about to die while he cut her hair. How well can you cut hair than? 😂
@@bassbabs6500 Hair will grow back. What's important is that Rapunzel was freed from Gothel. Not her hair length. CONTEXT PEOPLE!
Not only that, he loved those kids. He fell for a mother, but he also fell for her children. That’s crucial.
@@lindseysquire8417 Very true! O'Malley was a stand up guy all around.
I bestow upon O'Malley, the gold plated Chad award
O'Malley is the original gentleman
VOUCH!! I LOVE THEM SM
I feel like Tangled is less “bad guy with a heart of gold/bad guy with soft spot for girl” and more of a “nice guy with a heart of gold who tries to be a bad guy as a coping mechanism” he put up walls his entire life because he’s only known loss and loneliness. That’s what makes it different and I think that’s why it feels better than most “bad guy turns good” movies and storylines
Edit: I’m sick and tired of all the comments about age.
Yes
Yess!!!
That perfectly describes Megamind as well.
@@revanesque4904 YESSSSSSSSSS....this might be my obsession
I agree with this assessment 😄
In case of Eugene and Rapunzel I love that the series explains why she did not accept his proposal many many times. She was not ready, and he knew and understood and waited for her. I love that the movie explored that idea and worked with it in the series the complete their journey.
If I’m not wrong he is the one accepting her proposal.

Eugene: Fiiine I was the one asking
Rapunzel: and we are...?
Eugene: Living happily ever after
(Lines may not be written 1:1 cuz I live in Latin America so, spanish dub is the one Ik but thats the gist of the ending narration)
Eugene’s “I finally said yes” is probably my favorite line in any Disney movie. That voice actor read it absolutely perfectly
Zachary Levi 😀
@@bekind3823 I love that dude!!

*Idk man I feel like Pacha and his boo who's name in drawing a blank on from Emperor New Grove would be so good competition* 🤔
😍😍😍
I was just about to make this comment! Yes, David is the best.
I'm surprised you missed Eugene reciprocating Rapunzel's "loving the real you" thing. At the end, when Eugene sees Rapunzel with dark hair because her powers are now gone, the first thing he says is something like "I love brunettes."
"Did I ever tell you I have a thing for brunettes?"
Even beforehand he always pushes her hair out of her face to see her properly in contrast to Gothal not touching anything but her hair.
i love this scene 😭😭
@@kraftykactus1028 That's the line. Thank you.
Just when I thought a very loveable/relatable character couldn’t be any more relatable. XD
Yes, thank you.
I couldn’t agree more. It’s very possible that he was looking everywhere for her, similar to the Prince in Snow White.
seriously!! it's so aggravating that so many ppl who talk about the movie miss this detail---they think they're being so clever in poking holes in the logic of a fairy tale, but the movie already addressed it, so this kind of take just becomes an incredibly obvious telling on themselves that they didn't actually watch the movie 🙄
cinderella 3 goes even deeper into their relationship and i love how it fleshes both cinderella and henry even more! the entire thing is cinderella trying to fix what lady tremaine has done and get the wand back, WITHOUT remembering the year she's spent with henry, and the two of them just fall into love with each other so well throughout the movie! i'd rank their relationship higher tbh XD
It doesn't strengthen the argument FOR the prince that he puts little to NO effort into having this relationship and just does what his father wants.
And, frankly, that's the best thing that could happen in that situation.
I feel like the horse and their bromance had a huge role in his personal growth
@@lauraroeleveld4053 absolutely yes I agree
Reminds me of Walker Hayes song, Halloween Ended.
I love how Eugene sacrificed himself just so Rapunzel won't be slaved by Mother Gothel anymore. It was so dramatically romantic.
Because Eugene has a career as a thief, so he is accomplished, he doesn’t have to prove himself.
Tangled was one of my favorite Disney movies growing up, so much so that I can still quote most of the scenes while watching it
Plus he is the only Disney prince who really dies for her
The series completely butchered Eugine! They made him dumb, like what?
Also I’d like to add with the Felix and calhoun one that when he calls her a dynamite gal- her trigger- and she has a ptsd flashback, he never says it again or alludes to it in any way. And when they get married, they address her concerns and add extra protection to make her feel safe. That is how you handle things like that.
Yes! I've never noticed this before but you're totally right (and this makes me love them so much more).

She just needed someone who encouraged her to be open. something I always love about tangled is how Flynn moving her hair out of her face symbolizes how he sees her for herself and not for her hair unlike Mother Gothel.

Same I love their relationship, though thoughts on the age gap/Him having experience versus her having none
I mean in game logic, it is very likely another bug would appear
It's also nice that he didn't try to fix her PTSD with a hammer.
I'd never thought of that, but you're right! Awesome! You gotta hand it to Disney's creative team, they know what they're about and they are masters!
I'm sure they played it for laughs but accidentally made an honest moment
People think trauma means you're broken. Really it's the fear of breaking something the same way. Felix made her comfortable to accept her fears and address them so she can love again instead of run away from those emotions. He fixed her views of herself, that she was never broken to begin with.
Rapunzel and Eugene is the best Disney couple. Nobody can change my mind.

Interesting thought.
Good point
True, and very rimantic, but setting a very unhealthy and unrealistic standard of romantic love, in movies aimed at young children, so still potentially problematic, even in its time
@Shmooksey The thing about arranged marriages are that it was/is mostly decided by family members and the child couldn't stand up for herself/himself

But in the movie she says that she never got to dance with prince charming after the bell rung (she didn't know she was already with him) so technically she did come for prince charming lol
@@spicynoodles9506 tbh it seemed more like her giving an excuse as to why she needed to leave
what i've always loved dearly about the animated cinderella is the arc of a person who has been in an abusive home for most of her life learning what it means to deserve love and affection. yes, she dances with someone handsome and he finds her attractive as well, but they also walk and talk for hours on the grounds (although we the viewers get it as a montage). as the clock strikes midnight, they've been sitting and talking to each other when she needs to make a magical quick get away - her excuse is, "the prince! i haven't met the prince yet!" and the prince has a visible reaction when he realizes she spent all this time with him, not because she's after the crown, but because she genuinely enjoyed his company. i think that's the actual important moment in the new relationship, not the locking eyes and dancing a waltz.
cinderella gets a lot of hate from folks who haven't watched her movie in a long time (or ever). but i think those folks underestimate how powerful it is to find affection when you've been told all your life that you are garbage, barely fit to serve the people who were supposed to love and protect you the most, when you finally accept (accept and believe, not realize) your humanity and your dignity and your wholeness. and if you actually watch the movie, you find a much more interesting personality than "just be nice all the time, even to your abuser!" or "omg he's cute i'm in love". she has sarcasm, wit, emotional endurance, softness, and yes, incredible compassion. she has to hide her personality to her abusers to survive, but she's still there.
idk, it's really easy to dismiss femininity and softness. the femmes who use traditionally masculine tactics to succeed at their goals are not the only strong femme characters; sometimes strength looks like the emotional fortitude to stay alive with your heart intact.
Thank you for putting into words what I've always thought about Cinderella and why she is my favourite Disney princess!
Bravo. This is beautiful!
I concur. The story has a nice pacing from being unusual allies to them eventually having feelings for each other (ahem, the boat scene, ahem).
@@mariechen4375 Absolutely not reading all of that. If you want anyone on earth to understand what you wrote, please adopt paragraph breaks.
Yo same!
She only uses force when someone is a threat to themselves or others, or if there's no other option
Also these two do indeed have a very happy marriage - in post-movie content like Disney Heroes: Battle Mode (and even in their few scenes [and deleted scenes] from Ralph Breaks the Internet) they're always calling each other sweet nicknames, holding hands, being affectionate, working well as a team, and respecting each other without trying to change each other.
The only relationship that's on par for me with Flynn and Raps is absolutely Tiana and Naveen, I ADORE their relationship, bro starts a respectful (albeit obnoxiously oblivious rich boy) king and she softens around him and our bro is willing to give up EVERYTHING to support her and her dreams because doing so doesn't just make her happy, it introduces a purpose to his life he never had before
came here to say this!
YES TIANA AND NAVEEN
A very underrated relationship is Herc and Meg. Flynn and Raps are my favorite, though.
There was a Disney-published story book that explained in the beginning that Cinderella had unusually tiny feet too.
@@meganary876 omg thats amazing
@@lucyandecember2843 It's extremely funny, I read it again every time it comes around
After possibly thousands of feet, if I were Cinderella I would not want that shoe back. She should have smelled that thing a mile away. 😆
It completely ignores the fact that:
A) It's meant to entertain first and foremost (which all movies are), not be a blueprint for how to live your life.
That’s sound advice.
@@DepravedCoTApologist no it’s a lie he tells everyone because it’s the persona he’s adopted in order to protect himself from getting hurt
My suggestions:
- Hercules and Megara
- Pocahontas and John Smith
- Parents from Turning Red
- The Incredibles
- Ariel and Prince Eric
- Jack Skellington and Sally
Can't wait to see this turn into a series 👀👀👀
I have kind of a hard time with Ariel and Eric because they know each other for such a short time and obviously have trouble communicating much.
Jack and Sally are kind of interesting because while they don't actually interact a _ton_ in the movie, their interactions do imply that they've been friends for a while already. And you can tell that they know each other and feel comfortable around each other.
Was John Smith the first John she met or the second one? I would like to know, shat they think about Pocahontas 2. :)
Pocahontas and John Smith together is painfully toxic. Not in the context of the movie. They were real life people and Pocahontas was a kid when she met John, who was already an adult. But Disney felt like they have to change it to put a romance story in the movie which shows how disrespectful they are.
Turning Red isn't Disney tho
Giselle and Robert from Enchanted
I like how in Cinderella, it's shown that they talk for a long while, and when Cinderella needs to get away she says she wants to see the prince. She spent time with him 'cause she liked him and not because he's the prince. It is infatuation, but the animated sequels really flesh out the Prince Charming and their relationship. Also shoes were custom made until like, 1920s, and they were glass so only one girl out of the entire kingdom fitting into them isn't that unrealistic.
The original shoes were velvet but they were too difficult to animate so Disney made them glass
@@cs4887 As if glass is easier lol
Yes, this, absolutely! Also, they're getting down on my boy Charming for not "being able to recognize" Cinderella? There was no opportunity for Prince Charming to recognize/not recognize Cinderella. It wasn't Prince Charming who went looking for her with the shoe! The King sent the Duke out with it, trying to manipulate the prince into marriage so he could have grandchildren. That was the whole point of the ball in the first place.
lol I kind of like the idea of Prince Charming using her shoe to match with a cute stable boy 😂
They need to react to the third movie of the Cinderella Trilogy. It fleshes out the prince so well! Their relationship makes a little bit more sense if you watch it.
Let’s just take a moment to appreciate how good and well Jonathan hit that high note 2:36 oml slay😂
I was surprised 😂
I think another key reason Rapunzel and Eugene's relationship doesn't feel like the "bad boy with a heart of gold that changes for a woman" trope is because Rapunzel isn't trying to change him. She likes what she sees as he changes, but she didn't see broken boy and go "I fix him now" which is often the catalyst for the guy's change in things that follow that trope. And you guys touched on how banking on someone changing is not a good place to start a relationship when you were talking about Simba and Nala so I need not expound on that.
She actually says something like that in the show
THANK you! I wasn’t able to put my finger on why those two things bothered me and that’s exactly why! Awesome!
I would have ranked Eugene and Rapunzel higher than Simba/Nala.
No one gonna mention how Shang starts as also under societies thumb to make his family proud? He starts the movie as an almost dorky daddy's boy.
*Aladdin is giving her that.
My favorite too! I’m kinda sad they weren’t first. Tbh I actually like Kovu and Kiara more than Simba and Nala
The series is so good
I just like how healthily the series portrays them in a mature domestic sense as well - most Disney movies have bonding over life-or-death situations then... that's it. I loved how it shows their dynamic in normal situations and how it's not always just them "saving each other" since it's such a tired romantic cheat code. Eugene also basically turns into a male wife himbo but I'm fine with that because it's funny and works.
Yeah, they're my favorite. And the series does show their burgeoning relationship. It's much more down to earth than most Disney romances.
welcome to the party cause i believe the same no matter what they say
I'd like to see your ranking of Disney friendships. Characters like Woody and Buzz, Vanellope and Ralph, Timon and Pumbaa, Lilo and Stitch, Lumiere and Cogsworth, Marlin and Dory... there's a whole bunch that are each unique, with their own level of animosity that they overcome.

To be fair to the ORIGINAL story of Cinderella, she had absurdly small feet for being part fae/faerie, so her feet where considerably smaller than normal, and the golden (not glass) slipper was custom made to exactly fit her feet.
Also I like to think he has face blindness so he can't really tell anyone's face, no matter how much he likes/knows them (same here)
But it was the king's idea that they should use the shoe to find Cinderella.
@@Furienna Is face-blindness heritable?

Felix is husband material me thinks
I like this. Prince Charming has face blindness; our first disabled Disney character.
but doesn't the fairy godmother cast a spell on cinderella in order for him to not recognize her after midnight?
But if he’s face-blind then how does he recognise her when she’s not in her Princess getup in A Twist in Time? The mice only told him “you’re under a spell, Cinderelly was the girl at the ball!” and he bolted off to find her ... I know she was technically the only woman on the boat but my point still stands!
@@LadyLeomon wasn't that because he had previously held her hand or something?

I felt like Eugene didn't so much "come clean" as found someone who he felt he could be comfortable around. I don't think he specifically tried to fool Rapunzel so much as just had a front he presented to the world, and she was just another part of the world at first. Once he got to know her a bit though, he was willing to let the mask slip since he felt he could trust her. I'd consider that notably different from what Aladdin did with Jasmine, even aside from the timing of the reveal.
This is a GREAT point
Amen
This ^^^
Aww!
I do agree
The point about Eugene putting Rapunzel’s needs instead of his own hits closer with the context of the sequel series, where the writers try like 30 different things with him to try to figure out what his motivation in life is aside from making her happy. They eventually settle on him becoming a cop, which is wild for a *number* of reasons, and I’ve always felt like it was a missed opportunity not to have him explore other passions. I would’ve loved to see him become a writer, given his love for Flynnigan Rider!

@@emeraldg8667 Me too but I don't like that father plot twist that much..

Eugene doesn't feel like the bad boy changing for a girl trope because he isn't really a bad boy. He's trying to be, and he's even doing some bad things but he is having to fight against his true character when doing those things which is why it doesn't feel like the trope. Because he isn't changing for her, he's allowing himself to just be himself around her and letting his walls and armor down.

never say anything bad about felix and pepa.
ariel and eric are problematic sis literally sold her voice for a dude nobodys worth that much
belle and beast i'm not getting into
just- no. only tiana and naveen and felix and pepa and anna and kristoff
oh god and aurora and philip are WORSE than snow white and her guy. he met her when she was a baby. and then once when she was a teenager. then kissed the corpse. i'm seeing a theme.

Yes!!
O'Malley and Roger are the best romantic parnerts.
ooh, Milo and Kida. No one talks about Atlantis
@Jonathan Wolfe I like that one too! They establish the relationship right away so there's no need to distract from the story. And I also like how it's Bianca who makes the first move.

I feel Hercules and Meg would be a good one, as it shows Meg being afraid to start a new relationship after being hurt by her previous boyfriend. There’s a whole song about it.
Omfg I wish they did Meg and Hercules they're one of my favourites
I enjoyed how ironic it was in the end.
With Meg being on the other side of the spectrum and breaking someone else's heart.
And it is 🔥
Don't forget the episode of the show where they meet and lose their memory due to magic water.
But if we're considering real life standards like they're doing on these videos, Meg tricked Hercules almost all of the movie. She was trapped in Hades'contract true, but Hercules almost loses everything because of her. That's not healthy at all.
Naveen and Tiana from “Princess and the Frog” are reasonably positive for Disney.
The ultimate adaptation of “Cinderella” is “Ever After.”
*YES* about"Ever After"!!!!😍💚🧡
Agreed. Ever After is the best version.
Also agreed on princess and the frog.
Naveen and Tiana are one of my favourites!!!!
What about ‘Ella Enchanted’?
Agreed on Ever After. 👍🏻😍

And it's very beautiful
lol Watching Charming jump out the window in the sequel was pretty fab NGL

@@littlesongbird1
The 2015 remake has them meet before the ball too...
And there's an aminated series based on Cinderella that does the same thing.
Honestly The Cinderella franchise is actually has some good sequels
The last relationship reminds me of myself with my current bf. We seem to compliment each other and try to bring out the best. His family notices he is much happier. I feel more stable. I do woodworking and other types of artwork, and he likes metalworking so our interests intertwine a lot and we have a lot of the same goals
Look, I am all for having a healthy relationship, but when it comes to Cinderella I don't blame her for falling for the first guy that came along and showed her sweet emotions. She has been a servant in her own home for probably more than a decade. Anything feels better than that. And to her credit she didn't even know he was a prince.
Cinderella never asked for a man, she asked for a dress and a night out.
Agreed but the movie tries to paint it as a romantic love story- thats the problem
I kinda wished the sequel deepened their relationship more, sure it fleshed out the individual characters; Cinderella, Prince Charming, and even Anastasia, but Cinderella and the Prince were barely together the entire movie that there wasn't any relationship development between them.
More like she see him as her ticket for happy end to take her away from that place.
I would love to see a ranking of the Cinderella-esque movies (ie Ever After, Ella Enchanted, Anastasia, etc)
He was happy to see that she was happy, and he was more than elated to still be friends with her, the one who had given him his first experience of genuine human compassion
Thing is, that’s a super sweet ending.
@00ammy00 Ya that as well. Their friendship is wonderful
He is also best friend to Emeralda and Phoebus's son
Cinderella III: A Twist in Time really fleshes out the Cinderella/Charming relationship in a very fun and cute way. Original Cinderella kinda suffers from story-itis where it didn’t seem to have the time to go into their relationship, so it’s really nice to see them have the time to fall in love in a direct-to-video sequel of all things.
Yo, I absolutely love Cinderlla 3. That movie is such a ride.
Oh my goodness. The prince in Cinderella III is hilarious.
YRS CINDERELLA 3 IS AMAZING
HE'S SUCH A HIMBO I LOVE THAT MAN! XD
I was hoping someone would mention this. I love Cinderella 3! I never thought I'd like one of the direct to video sequels so much.
This movie is one of my favorites because of the factor that these two robots are able to care for each other through "show, don't tell", and I'm excited on your takes on how a relationship works with different forms of communication and love languages.
that on'es one of my favorites, solely because of the fact that you can clearly tell what their story is with barely any dialogue between them
WALL-E is a great idea !
Ooh, different forms of communication in relationships. Nice idea.
This movie always makes me CRY so much 😭♥️
I looooooove that movie, its such a great way to show non verbal communication skills.

Honestly, a "Ranking Relationships in..." series sounds like a fun idea, I say crack on with it guys.
Yes! They were so fun! And it was such a surprise for them both I imagine.
That movie is so good, and their relationship is beautiful, too!!!

Omg I’d love for their relationship to be addressed
Yeah pacha is really cool, but with Disney, the relationships aren’t realistic
Hey, he's dealing with a talking llama, guy's probably stressed lmfao. There's also a factor of wanting to not disappoint his family seeing how happy they are, because he wants them to stay happy.
Yes, thank you. It's good to see someone else who doesn't think that Beauty and the Beast is a case of Stockholm syndrome.
@@Ned-nw6ge
Well... it is, but only in that they are locked up together long enough to get to know each other better.
They actually did a deep dive vid into Beauty and the Beast all its own, so go watch it! :D

I kind of wish he got sequels or spinoffs to give him more of a personality, like Cinderella's prince.
He also has context though of what happened per the dwarves didn't he? Cause the dwarves were there when he met her dead.
Yeah and I remember they struggled to draw man back then
it was also the first full length animated feature film and was released during The Great Depression. Pretty sure Disney like...took a second mortgage on his house or some shit to finish it....so...that might have influenced that as well.
Well kissing a dead person goodbye with no expectations is not an unusual thing. The dead aren't supposed to react or wake up though.
All this becomes irrelevant when you find out their aged 💀
Snow White 14, Prince Florian 31
+
Wow! That's a massive waste of potential...What a tool.

I always loved how Roger and Jessica Rabbit were with each other. His sheer and utter obliviousness to her appearance and her looking past his A -list status to appreciate his sense of humor ( "he makes me laugh") gave the impression that they understood each other in an environment where everyone projected onto them.
That's . . . surprisingly, really sweet. I'd never thought about them in those terms before.
Yeah those two have a great relationship! :D
That's what I've been trying to say. Staying kind and fortuitous in an environment like that takes a lot. She didn't even desire revenge she just continued looking towards the future leaving her stepmother and siblings to suffer from their own karma. That takes alot.
My dad randomly sang to my mom when they met. Based on the fact that I exist, you can probably infer that it worked.
