Dear Sven, great information as always! I couldn’t bring myself to ditch my meagre collection of turtlenecks from the 1970’s. Now thanks to you I am back in the groove and have even ordered a new “blue fleck” merino wool example to pair under a close fitting cream three quarter length rain mac for the milder English winter days. Nearly 70 years old and fashionable. Who would have thought it? You are the main man alright! All the best, Al.
At the very beginning, I was thinking ”are those from UNIQLO?” because those turtlenecks have been my favourite and I have been wearing them a lot! Thank you for this fantastic detailed guide!
I always like this channel, but I disagree with most things in this video, as someone who loves turtleneck sweater: 1. you can wear a long sleeve T-shirt under the turtleneck, darker or thicker material will not see through. 2. wearing sweater directly on your skin is a beginner mistake. 3.. dark turtleneck is fine, you can wear it under medium value jacket or a dark overcoat if you wish. Wearing mono-tone dark cloth in the winter can be stylish.
@@iiChadd i use wool detergent to wash it in warm water, and fan dry (twice per year), it shrink but only for less than a hour before the first wear after wash. I have 5 year old turtleneck that barely has peel under close scrutiny.
After watching countless of videos and reading countless articles at the gentleman’s gazette, i have slowly begun to build my own wardrobe. Today, i decided to buy my first ever turtleneck. After my purchase, i decided to check if the gentleman’s gazette has any advice on turtlenecks. I was quite happy to see that the very same turtleneck i bought (from uniqlo) was being endorsed for its value and quality from the gentleman’s gazette. So it seems that i have finally begun to recognize quality when i see it, thanks to the gentleman’s gazette and its invaluable advice!
I found out today a black turtle neck. Fits perfect the grey blazer. The combination with jeans and brown or black shoes is awesome. Sporty but elegent look !
Living in the upper Midwest, turtlenecks are almost a necessity. Just not with a sport coat of any kind. Worn under a quarter zip pullover, is a great look and comfortable.
I personally recommend woolovers, they are affordable, come in some nice, natural looking colours and different materials like cashmere and wool. Another thing you can do is to fold the neck twice instead of just once. It makes the neck a little more volumptious and shorter. A good way to not overheat when entering a store or building.
Recently got a couple of uniqlo turtlenecks for just such a purpose as wearing under a jacket. Good to see I'm hitting all the advice even before I saw the video!
I only have to say one thing and that is thank you. Over the month i have been watching this channel you have given me a lot of knowledge of how to dress smartly. And again thank you.
First of all the video is really good. I was expecting something like that since the duffle coat video. Second, you have the ability to give an air of elegance also to casual outfits and this video is a great example and gives me many ideas. Thanks.
Turtlenecks, in my opinion, can be a sign of both elegance and intelligence. Both very good attributes and pulling off a turtleneck really shows off these attributes. I’ll definitely try to wear turtlenecks in the future.
I love turtleneck sweaters because of their elegance. Wearing the most fitting turtleneck sweater can be far more elegant than wearing a shirt and tie, at least on some occasions. However, my biggest problem with turtleneck manufacturers is that they make a product that sags badly after a few wear. I started wearing turtleneck sweaters in the '60s when they were also in high fashion, and I think the quality was much better then. I bought several turtlenecks from LL Bean, and the cotton was exceptional, but after just a few wear, the neck sagged so badly that I could only wear them to jog in the winter!
Excellent video Mr. The history part of it totally makes the difference. It completes it wo when you use turtleneck.. You know why, you know the history behind it.
I can't agreed on the "avoid navy". I think a navy roll neck with heavy knit (submariner style) is great for a casual or smart casual outfit (without jacket). Simon Crompton of Permanent Style have some awesome exemples. But under a jacket I agreed that a fin wool grey or camel is more easy to pair.
I lived in Pittsburgh PA from 1995-2000 & I was in central VA in the 1990s, 1990-1995 era. The climate & 🌡could vary from morning to evening so a thick-heavy sweater or heavy turtleneck would not be ideal.
I remember "mock necks", i. e. those with a short collar, as we used to wear them in the army in winter, underneath the field shirt. But I never considered them a proper sweater as such, just as a kind of additional undergarment. As for the real turtlenecks with the high collar: the sentence "they really show every imperfection of your body" is true. So stay away from them if you've got a paunch.
Hello Sven, thank you for the amazing video guide again! I've noticed that the best option of undershirt for turtleneck is some technical snug fitting short sleeve sport shirt even with a little compression features or viscose (or bamboo) undershirt. As slim fit as turtlenecks are nowadays I've noticed that there isn't that much friction between the turtleneck and undershirt vs wearing just a basic cotton or cotton mix undershirt.
I really like the look of the turtleneck combined with your double breasted brown suit in this video. Also props to you for not insisting in buying a high quality (and expensive) turtleneck since you don't really wear them that much.
In my -teens I used to wear it to school in the autumn and winter with a black silk shirt with tiny standing collar (like chinese style almost). It looked quite nice and warm :D.
Great video. You style turtlenecks in a very classic way. I myself actually prwfer black turtlenecks because i really like the look of Oswald Mosley or the style of japanese master tailors like Yohji Yamamoto.
In the winter and early Spring, I like wearing my turtleneck with a light colored trench coat or with a coat. Many young men here don’t have the money to buy a suit. Overall I agree on your advice!
I am actually quite surprised that you did not discuss the option to skip the jacket and just dress a turtleneck with slacks. In my experience this is where the garment really comes out strong. But maybe I just naturally found that this style fits me better and for others it is the other way around. Nevertheless, great video, keep up the good work!
I agree with most of what you say and I think a video on this topic was needed, but when it comes to a turtle neck and pinstripe I don’t think it’s completely unacceptable, although anything black tie or more formal is obviously not a good option.
I have long hair and wear turtlenecks. I always have my hair tied back or up when I wear one. But its still long. I think so long as your hair isn't just left down, its fine.
Thank you for doing this, I got one recently: it's black (I think cotton), not too thin and looks quite good on its own, from ZARA (they're good) - I think they're coming back into fashion! EDIT: UUUH RAFAEL WHAT ARE YOU DOING 5:54 ?!

I actually got a tan turtle neck from H&M not too long ago and I pair it with my dark navy blazer and dark wash denim and chukka boots and I like the dark with lighter color contrast in the outfit
I like wearing brown or tan turtlenecks with my more rustic sports jackets wit wide lapels to create a nice retro nod to the 1970s, or a dark red one to casualize my navy suit. In The Godfather, a few henchmen in the scene with moe greene in las vegas wear a cool turtleneck outfit
I’ve been wearing cashmere turtlenecks for a year or two, and to avoid damage it’s pretty simple : wash them regularly, in a zip less laundry bag, with temperature not exceeding 30°C

Turtlenecks and Combat boots are two unisex items i absolutely love :) Turtlenecks look extraordinary 👍🏽👏🏽
I remember turtleneck sweaters being quite popular in the mid 1960s. I associated them with the fashions of Carnaby St., London.

A thin type layering LL Bean or Eddie Bauer type turtle neck is fine. 😉. I had one in High School, 1980s.
