I own a ww2 swedish greatcoat, and the little details on it are fantastic. The tail extends to above the hips to make, outdoor defecation, easier. The front tails have small hooks to hook onto the pockets, if a soldier so wished to get them out of the way of his legs. It buttons right up to the neck, and is very fitted. thank you. this is the most comprehensive guide on overcoats i've ever seen. i just got into vintage-hunting and it can be daunting. so thank you for showing what to look out for and for inspiring newbs like me. cheers from balmy NYC!
from my experience vintage is more difficult than OTR. Cloth is heavy as hell and it doesn't drape, it's like a frickin carpet of course it won't drape nicely. For Sven works as he has quite a rounded phisique but should you have an average-athletic build it won't be too good. Vintage means - boxy, no darts, heavy fabric, weird button stance, outdated and not suited for the modern man. I would rather buy a modern overcoat having 10%-20% Polyamide or Polyester mixed with Wool rather than a 100% wool vintage. It just fits better and you look better as a result
i know nothing of fashion but (especially if he is deceased) there is so much more character in a family members clothing (ie watches, jewelry, coats and the like) even if its black or looks off, that coat has a story and that beats any new coat

One of your reasons for living in Minnesota's climate must be so that you have opportunities to wear these overcoats, and to wear more of your clothing...right? I would too if I had your wardrobe!
I'm from and living in Finland myself, long cold+snowy winters :D. I'm excited about the cooler/colder weather. The worst thing about winter is the slippery ground, not the coldness. IMO.
I went to a vintage shop in Madrid and bought a stunning wool overcoat from the 1970s for about fifty US dollars which turned out to have been made for King Carlos of Spain according to the tailor's label. No idea how it ended up in a second hand shop, although he did flee the country in 2014 🤔. Or maybe he never collected it from the shop and they eventually sold it or got rid of it.
The worst thing about Minnesota winters isn't the cold, it's the fact that when I go thrifting I worry Sven has already found all the best things since we have the same build.
Wonderful video I just purchased this past weekend a vintage overcoat manufactured by believe it or not Sears and Roebuck at first I starred to ignore it but the more I examine it the better it appeared it has a small houndstooth pattern like I never seen before on any overcoat and of course the price was right thanks for this great video on do's and don'ts on overcoats!
Raphael, an idea for another winter-themed video: shoe care, with a focus on protecting shoes from the wet & especially the salt from sidewalks & parking lots. Thanks for another great video!
They’ve helped me immensely as well. It’s great to see his outfit examples too. I’ve picked up a TON of nuanced things like how much break on my corduroy pants, etc. Thanks Raphael.
Just got a secondhand but unused 80% wool blend overcoat for my first professional job, got incredibly lucky with the fit too. This video is refreshing to see and makes me feel more confident about the whole deal, and in Texas people aren't typically prepared for this sort of thing that well anyways so being the one person with a well styled overcoat is a big plus. As a bald man having a hat of any kind is a huge plus for the weather. I got a corduroy flat cap from a street vendor in Malta that has a snap on the brim that lets you swap it between traditional flat cap and a newsboy type mode that lets you pull it lower over your head for extra warmth. Any advice for water proofing treatments for overcoats and hats that would keep out the weather reasonably well without discoloring the fabric?
What flea markets do you have over there in America? I live in Niedersachsen, Germany and go to every flea market near my location. And sadly i found never something like these classy pieces. Is there any advice some of you can give? I would appreciate it, have a nice day.
it's a matter of luck. i rarely find anything on thrift stores and fleamarkets either. only once did i find a black trenchcoat that fits my right. just keep looking around second hand stores or fleamarkets and eventually something will turn up.
I'm really enjoying your videos and style advice. This one answered many of my questions around my desire for a "Greatcoat". Thank You for your terrific work!

Excellent advice.. but like all advice, I have to ignore just one (or two) point(s): My beautiful bespoke cashmere overcoat. I just couldn't help myself :-) I love cashmere! Also, I am 6' 4" and I had the length made to mid-shin-bone. Because I could. You don't know what it's like being my height and having to deal with clothing that's too short. I told my tailor I want my overcoat halfway between my knees and my feet dammit :-) He tried to discourage me on that length, but when I finally put the coat on, he agreed with me - it looks awesome! As for the warmth of cashmere, I am coldblooded and love winter - I stay warm enough in my cashmere coat in the worst climates except maybe for the North Pole. But I have no plans to travel there anytime soon! Great vid, Sven, thanks! PS: I just received my cummerbund and single length bow tie - beautiful!
The herringbone overcoat looks amazing. And $5 is a steal!!! The grey one you're wearing to explain the video also looks good! But those that are shearling/fur looking ones are a turn off for me
I bet Raphael got off when he saw the film Orient Express. Great video! I am still waiting for the Macintosh Jacket guide and how it differs from the classic Trench.
Sven, I have become absolutely addicted to watching your videos! I am a middle aged man, who is a medical professional, and thought that I knew the basics of being a gentleman. Upon watching your videos, however, I now realize that I don’t know hardly anything! 😉
Only black overcoat I like or even adore is the belstaff tweed Sherlock overcoat and it got some greys in the weave and the design itself is beautiful and personally think it makes it looks better in the black/grey tweed fabric
I'm loving that fur coat, man! Though I think leather jackets can be styled without looking too much from the 80's because It's not the only time people wore those. I like to wear a long black or dark brown leather coat with most suits, casual or not. It just seems to go with a lot of outfits, but that's my personal prefrence. :3
Even this video is 7 years old it is still up to point. During winter times I like to wear my Swedish filed jacket from the 1940. Very heavy material, it is a bit short. But if it is really cold long johns do the job for me.
Milsurp is a great way to save money. Surplus overcoats are usually very faithful to the history of overcoats. They are usually very warm and practical. Of course some surplus coats have just too many military details to look good on a civilian and some are also of poor quality but generally it's an easy way to save money and find a coat that you like.
At this point, I have a shin-length vintage Christian Dior medium grey wool overcoat, a Bill Blass shin-length camelhair overcoat, and (just) now two(!) Invertere knee-length reversible trench/tweed overcoats! Now just waiting for Las Vegas to cool off enough to wear them. 🙂
Where are the flea markets / second hand stores that you keep talking about? My local ones are really bad and do not carry anything like that. Actually wouldn't mind taking a trip if there's a chance to find something like that overcoat. Thanks.
das0088 if you live near a big city, try the thrift stores in the rich suburbs. I go to one in Framingham MA (near Boston) and they have all kinds of designer clothes. If you don't live near a big city you are probably out of luck and eBay is your next best option.
I work in a luxury designer clothing store (we carry Kiton, Loro Piana, and Tom Ford) and a guy with a fedora hat comes in often to "hang out" and never buys anything. When we sales associates stop talking to him (we only earn commission), he pretends to talk to someone on his phone and poses around the store. We call him the fedora guy!
I live in Florida but I do keep one brown double breasted wool duster with a button vent. It’s simple and when I head north, it makes for a very nice bit of cold weather wear. When unbuttoned, it flaps behind me like a cape. When buttoned, it fits very comfortably.
I understand the premise of the video and generally it feels like a lot of opinion. I think generally a lot of these tips are good but shorter overcoats that look like pea coats are bad, but one's that drape above the knee are also very good looking overcoats, but if you really need something for the cold you will need a longer coat. I love the cashmere advise, because that's true, it's just not heavy enough and makes it a deal more expensive and it's not even touching your skin all the time.
This guy seems like he knows what he's talking about but his style is so old fashion it's kinda hard to take him seriously. He looks stylish and not stylish at the same time.
He's definitely stuck in a particular time period. He should be convincing more people to wear overcoats by making the aesthetic more accessible. Instead no one will want to wear one because they think they'll look like an 80 year old man going to church (not that there is anything wrong with that).
I just bought my first proper over coat. It's a mid grey herringbone crombie style by Dunn & Co with the velvet collar and notched lapels. I'm 5'6" so it'll go down to my calves as it is so I'll get it taken up to bring it back up to the knees. I'm so excited to get it!
That 5$ flea market overcoat is simply outstanding as are all your other overcoats’ Now that I’ve grown older 68 I find myself preparing more for the Pennsylvania winters and a wool double breasted overcoat is indeed most comfortable and stylish. Thank you kindly for your informative video’ 🙏🙏
It's unadvantageous if it makes you look from the 80s, but do consider vintage? I guess I'll keep it a bit more then, but for how long? Just curious what do you consider vintage, because for some reason 80s already sound so last century.
ingrainedQuark In general, vintage, when referring to mens clothing means it is from the 1950s or earlier. Even though vintage now means anything 20 years old or more, the 1950s tends to be when most people agree the quality of menswear began to decrease.
Mason Rudesheim Thanks, it makes sense now. Being from Eastern Europe I noticed not only that the clothing style dramatically changed in the 50s but it was actively promoted in the movies: the good guy usually dressed like a proletarian, while the nice style was usually reserved for the bad guy, enemy of the state coming from the decadent capitalist world. Even today people here constantly dress down compared to the West, and even if clothing got more accessible than ever. 40 years of propaganda is hard to wash away.
I agree with most on the list however it takes confidence and sartorial maturity to properly pull off the boutonierre or pocket square with overcoat. Most people will fail terribly whether realizing it or not. It is along the lines of sprezzatura and a personal choice of expression. It can be acceptable, but is atypical and pushing the boundaries of costume.
I'm getting my Navy Blue Italian military surplus trench coat on Monday. My chest sits between a Large and XL so to be on the safe side I opted to buy the XL, the coat has nice silver buttons for a very nice contrast and they will pair nicely with my black sheepskin insulated leather gloves. I'm also looking at getting some grey Italian wool pants that I was looking at and pairing them with a nice cotton belt with a silver buckle to tie the look together. I'm a bit unsure what shoes and shirt would go well with this look unfortunately.
In the topic of cold weather wear, can you give us tips on what type of footwear goes well with suits and overcoats and help fight off the elements? Cold and snow?

I love vintage overcoats...So glad you did this video👍🏾👍🏾
Would love to dress like this a lot but the struggle of the Aussie outback
The black, Gray & blue is a nice versatile color....very helpful video😀
Milsurp is a great way to save money. Surplus overcoats are usually very faithful to the history of overcoats. They are usually very warm and practical. Of course some surplus coats have just too many military details to look good on a civilian and some are also of poor quality but generally it's an easy way to save money and find a coat that you like.
pikkuhakki2 I recommend East German overcoats and Hungarian army overcoats.
I have an unissued vintage Yugoslavian guard coat. It's 100% wool, super thick and warm, and it looks fantastic.
The vintage herringbone for 5 dollars...wow what a find ,my favourite of those shown here and I'm now seeking same
Great video, thank you, you helped me pick my first overcoat today :)
Glad we could help. :)
Amazing video Raphael, time to give my overcoat a makeover!
If you don't live near a big city you are probably out of luck and eBay is your next best option.
das0088 salvation army, goodwill, savers, value village
I got the same problem here.
So looking like you are from “the 80’s or 90’s” is bad but looking like you’re from the 20’s or 30’s is the ideal? Who put you in charge?
This guy wishes he was in the late 20s early 30s
That 5$ flea market overcoat is simply outstanding as are all your other overcoats’
Now that I’ve grown older 68
I find myself preparing more for the Pennsylvania winters and a wool double breasted overcoat is indeed most comfortable and stylish.
Thank you kindly for your informative video’
🙏🙏
This guys got serious swagger.
Right!
Casualities, make fashion classification 🤔 style for expression "Wear" not "Personal" 🤔
Free due have to look "Wearing" 🤔
Ya me due don't agree too formal 🤔 but minimal just for expression (not style) 🤔
40 years of propaganda is hard to wash away.
ingrainedQuark Even Gangsters in the 1920’s dressed in nicer suits than most civilians of the time!
Hey sir, don't say that Hercule Poirot looks less attractive, this man (David Suchet) is my favorite gentleman.
+1
I'm getting my Navy Blue Italian military surplus trench coat on Monday. My chest sits between a Large and XL so to be on the safe side I opted to buy the XL, the coat has nice silver buttons for a very nice contrast and they will pair nicely with my black sheepskin insulated leather gloves. I'm also looking at getting some grey Italian wool pants that I was looking at and pairing them with a nice cotton belt with a silver buckle to tie the look together. I'm a bit unsure what shoes and shirt would go well with this look unfortunately.
That’s how mafia works.
I got a wool and silk double breasted greatcoat for 10$ at a þrift store, it's very nice and keeps me very warm! I wear an ushanka wiþ it.
I personally like the Peaky Blinders look, and have six quality overcoats in different colours and styles!
Where did you get them from if you’re still alive ?
@@jjacob7995 guess he's dead
@Leon Russell 😕
@@leonrussell9607 he got killed by Italian Mafias cuz they thought hes a Peaky Blinder.
I've been wanting This video all December, Great as always
In the topic of cold weather wear, can you give us tips on what type of footwear goes well with suits and overcoats and help fight off the elements? Cold and snow?
In Europe such a Look with a hat would earn laughter
Nice gloves. May I know where you got them?
Hello Mohan. It's from Fort Belvedere. Please check the description for the link. :)
Let's be honest, you don't care for keeping warm, you just want to look badass
i still live in the 80s ! Best decade ever, really
Same
Definitely some of the best music
Dear Sven, great video. I don't always agree with the advice you give, but this time, you nailed it! I learned a lot. Thank you!
Raphael, you live in Minnesota. Winters there are like -20 C (-5 F)... how can you bear this cold with just these coats and flat caps? that's impossible without a parka and at least a heavy beanie! haha
How do you think people did before parkas? 😅
Where can I buy an extra long overcoat so that I can get a two for one special at the movies?
Another awesome video, thank you
Where have I been? This is my second video. I love this guy!
I almost always wear a flat cap. Unfortunately, Fedoras make me look like an arse hole
Duude, the coat you´re wearing is cool af
Godfather approved
I agree 100% on going for black. And what an amazing coat at 0:28!
Bro I came for tips on how to wear my camel overcoat not how to look like one of the mafia
Take what advice you get from it and be on your way, not every advice video has to suit you 100%
