Awesome! I think that instead of the rebar roosting bar, you could use a piece of wider wood or a stick like you mentioned. Better for their feet long-term.
Your video was both entertaining and EXACTLY what I was looking for! I can do this!!! As a 66 year old widow living in Honduras, looking for an idea how to make an easy, inexpensive chicken coop, your video came up first with everything I need to know to get started! Thank you for turning my doubtful concern into confident determination ❤️.
Thanks for putting cheap options out there! Everyone should grow something, even on a shoestring. Work with what you got. And if it doesn't work out, it's a great fort!
Repurpose is always better than recycle! I genuinely love this. Brilliant way to Repurpose plastic that would end up in landfill. I'd put it on slabs to help deter foxes digging in, and thicker roosting bars. But that's literally all I'd change.
You could stack it on other pallets also and that would help deter them. This was really meant to be in a backyard/suburban type setting where most predators aren't around. Even still, my free range chickens love it.
Hi Brian. Consider offering your wife the opportunity to hang any decorative; pictures, plaques, paintings, memorabilia, etc., she likes, on the new pallet chicken coop, and she might end up liking it a lot more than she ever thought possible.
I've done the same. The hours needed to pull apart all the boards and build something is kinda crazy. Fence boards from home depot or lowes are cheap and you can use those as lap siding if you want it to look nicer.
I'd use a scrap 2x4 for roosting so that its more comfortable for their feet.... especially in cokd weather. Toes won't be exposed. But love the idea of pallets.
That is great! I would suggest swapping out the perch rebar for some branches, they like them to be a bit thicker and also (bonus) you can scrounge them for free. Our first hen house was a double height 3x4 pellet hen house with free scrap tin on top. Worked a treat!
Brian, a branch for a roost would be easier for the chickens to perch on than the re-bar, even cheaper. We are using our sons old garden cart for a brooder. We just made a lid out of 2X4's and hardware cloth for ventilation and to keep rats out. Use what you have and find a way to make it work! God bless and keep growing.
You totally cracked me up! Thanks for the tips because I have access to tons of pallets and I never thought of them as possible chicken coops! I used tin and built a 10 x 13 foot coop but had to buy chicken wire, nails and 4x4s and used 2x4s also to get the height I wanted so my tall husband and son would fit into it without bending down. Still had $600 into it. Thanks for giving me options to consider because I need another coop because I have way too many roosters happen to me and needed ideas to keep them separate from my hens (besides culling them).
Honestly if you needed to seperate chickens in a pinch i think this is great!!! Yes it has its flaws but id rather have an answer as to where im houseinf a quarantined chicken then no answer at all. Thank you for sharing!
Our foxes here would get in without wire on the base. Unfortunately can’t use speedy lead in urban areas. A wide log might be more comfortable than rebar making it cheaper too. We get free pallets here in oz too. The shingles are very clever! Love the first build with Drive through chicken 😂 Now... You need whitewash or stain for or a millennium build Brian 😅
Love it we are doing pallet blg shed n coop that's awesome on my way to get more pallets this is encouraging. We built strong doghouse out of pallets n our scrap wood n free shingles near n 2 x2 roof sides. Old plywood n flooring from thrift n spray foam insulation. Fits 3 ppl n a dog lol
Outstanding! If people are willing to spend more time on gathering and reusing then a bunch of cool things can be built. There is always that tug of war between time and money.
Ooohhh, this will be a perfect summer home for my ducks! I’ll staple hardware cloth to each pallet for added security, surround it with field stones 🤔 Funny video btw! Will be subscribing 😊
Gladly! If you've a hammer and nails you can really tighten it up, but chickens in backyards are pretty secure. You may have opossums and racoons to deal with, but otherwise you'll be good. Let me know how it turns out! :)
@AC-xq8me I think so, although I'll never sell a sneaky racoon out! The pallets I used have only one inch wide slats. If needed it could be wrapped in wire to add another level of protection.
Interesting. We have access to pallets and never thought of this. Looking forward to a follow up video. 🙃 and your humor is great! Thank you for sharing and God bless! 💜💙💜
Weasels will get in. I used bamboo to fill in gaps. My chicken door secret… concrete block over a hole. Raccoons kept figuring out my locks so I started making muscle needy doors. I also learned to make sliding doors that needs a 250 pound guy to lean into it for it to work… gave me an excuse to eat more carbs.
@FlannelFarms absolutely! We are in NH and we are getting 15 meat birds in early may. Trying to figure out If we should put ply wood down on the ground or keep them on the grass. We'd probably need to double the amount of pallets.
You and dave have a knack for putting out content on things I was literally thinking about that day! Cool synchronicity or the algorithm manifesting reality? Either way, I dig it!
Definitely not a hobo shack, I think they like to be more mobile. Keep it up..... just finished the video, her face was reserved disappointment.... I’ve seen that face hahaha

But it doesn't bother me at all. I mean, I'm putting in some grocery row gardens from that survival guy sooo 😂😂 The bean thing is hilarious 😅
I tried to give my girls nesting box. They looked at me like i had 5 eyes and they said no, crazy lady. I could see this bigger, taller so i could walk in. Thank you.
Hahaha. Great. I think I’m gonna make a pallet shelter for my chickens. Not predator proof at all. But I’ll throw an electric poultry netting around it. Find some scrap wood for roosts. The rebar is way too narrow.
@@FlannelFarms thank you for the update. I've just copied what you did (minus the milk bottle roof) and looks perfect. Thank you again and enjoying your chicken videos 🤍🙏
I thought the blue pallets been treated with chemicals which is quite dangerous for the chickens. Plain pallets no treatment are 100% better and safe for the chickens
Pulling out the coop drawer with the hen squawking in it was so perfect. 🤣
Haha it was fun.
😍 👏
I laughed at that bit 😂😂

Yeah, big guffaw! Midnight here, Good thing GrandDad is hearing impaired!

Totally.
Warmer too! 😂
👍 yup
The milk crate shingles was brilliant! It ain’t a true chicken yard if it don’t look like a homeless encampment LOL!
THANK YOU!! haha.

Eating beans with the chicken was my favorite part. Thank you for a good laugh this evening. 😃🌱🐢
You're welcome
I would definitely wrap the coop in chicken wire especially the roof palette those side openings are big enough for my raccoons to get into for sure.
It is definitely a option!
I had something grab 9ne of my birds through those.
Thanks for putting cheap options out there! Everyone should grow something, even on a shoestring. Work with what you got. And if it doesn't work out, it's a great fort!
My kids were like, "can we use that??"
My children would be in this before the fowl! Hahaa!
My kids instantly claimed it!
That's awesome!!! 🤣 Love the shingles especially!! The best part about this is that the chickens don't care!!
Thanks! It has been 2 years and they are still holding up

Well dang... spent hours looking on line for a chicken coop... but im going to go slap my palettes together and call it a day

Hobo village 😂😂 Good wife, funny husband 💐
You could even place chicken feed bags on the walls for insulation!
Great point!
Looks good, but I would use some limbs for the roosts. The rebar is thin and could get pretty cold.
Yes, I mentioned wood, but was using the example nearly anything works. They ended up using the inside of the pallet.
He probably has never seen a chicken froszen to a pipe before. It’s horrifying. 😳
